I suffer from anxiety, but the moment I walked into Lakeview OMS, I felt completely at ease. The waiting room has a calming, almost zen-like ambiance, and the front desk staff are kind and professional. Both Dr. Patel and his dental assistant (who did my X-rays) are truly top tier. They made me laugh and feel comfortable -- which is saying a lot because I'm usually terrified of dentists and end up crying! Dr. Patel was informative, gentle, and quick -- it literally took him only two minutes to remove my wisdom tooth with zero pain. I was a little nervous getting all four wisdom teeth out here after reading the reviews, but my teeth were causing me trouble and I needed them out. The reviews are right in that Dr. Patel is fast and...that sometimes makes you feel rushed. Take your time and slow him down. He's been doing this for years and has the routine down pat, but can forget that this is probably most patients' first time getting their wisdom teeth out. I was put fully under, and when I came to, apparently passed out twice (because of an underlying health condition). Dr. Patel and his team were incredibly professional and empathetic in getting me back on my feet. They were very careful in ensuring I was fully alright before discharging me. The entire process was painless and easy. They also gave me clear instructions for the recovery. I can't thank their team enough for giving their best effort on the day of the surgery. The two downsides are: you may feel rushed, as mentioned before. And the office called to reschedule my appointment a couple times. This is pretty common, but a little annoying because I planned PTO around this. Overall, I would recommend going here. read more

Update (10/15/25): It has been almost 6 MONTHS since my tooth extraction with Dr. Patel, and the numbness in my tongue has remained unchanged. I still have numbness at the tip of my tongue, which continues to affect my daily life, making it difficult to brush my teeth with mint flavored toothpaste, eat spicy or heavily seasoned foods, or drink hot beverages. read more

He was rude and sarcastic and he ONLY wants your money. During the procedure, he was rushing, rolling his eyes and sighing excessively, and was so aggressive and rough during her extraction. I had a very good experience here with Dr. Patel. If I could, I would have given them 4.5 stars. First I saw Dr. Patel for an extraction of a molar I broke when biting into JinJin ginger chew candy! Beware of that brand. The extraction went well and I had a good impression of Dr. Patel. He had an interesting mix of being friendly even though we didn't have much chit chat time. I liked and trusted him. Then months later I came to get a dental implant for the tooth where I had the extraction. I googled dental implants and the videos scared me. They looked bloody, they warned not to drink water before, to have someone drive you home, to not work for a day or so. My actual experience with Dr. Patel was much better than that. For one, it only took about 10 minutes and was fairly painless. The guys who assisted him were nice. I was prescribed meds and took some but there was very little pain and went to work the next day. I deducted half a star because I would've liked an assistant to call/email/prep me about what to expect for the implant. (Sedated or not, need someone to drive me home or can take a bus, should I drink water/eat before surgery or not? I did manage to call two hours before the implant and get my answers.) Also I have left phone messages and don't get called back, though the front desk folks were nice in person. If I could I would give this "Dr" a minus star I would. Went to this location for some oral surgery. Dentist from 2 different office informed me I had a partial tooth still embedded in my gum. A tooth that was pulled out years ago, and I needed to find an oral surgeon. I without doing my homework went to this location, "Dr" Kim Patel took my case. Instead of performing their own X-rays, they asked me to send them the ones I already had. Even though 2 previous dentist told me there was a remaining tooth still embedded this oral surgeon told me there wasn't and also stated I never had a tooth there to begin with. He grew upset when I told him I did have tooth there and it was pulled out yrs ago with complication. Well he went ahead, numb my mouth and started digging a hole in my gum, not where the tooth was but next to it where I had a lump. Well he finished in like 10 minutes, my mouth bled severely for 10 hrs. 10 hrs!! He also prescribed me some penicillin even though I told him I was allergic, luckily the pharmacist caught it and gave me something that wouldn't kill me. Follow up visit, no X-ray no nothing, just a five minute visit and begging for more money. 2 months later I still have a damn hole in my mouth that holds food particles each time I eat. I My norm now is to carry a water pick every time I eat and living with a damn hole in my gum that won't go away. I advice everyone not to allow this so call Oral surgeon any where near your mouth, you will regret it! read more

I'd like to warn you against booking an appointment at Lakeview Oral Maxillofacial Surgery + Med Spa, which recently delivered the worst dental care experience of my life. I received a referral for this practice from my primary dentist. I had cracked a molar and needed to have it extracted. I made an appointment to see Dr. Patel. I can run through all the one-star reviews here and see that I share most of my fellow reviewers' experiences: * Trying to convince me that I'd need to have a set of 3D x-rays taken (that insurance wouldn't cover) even through my regular dentist had sent over x-rays, check * Dr. Patel's terrible bedside manner: no introduction or explanation of the treatment process, obvious impatience, check * Being met with scorn when I said I'd have to see if my insurance would cover further work like an implant, check * Giving me three shots one after the other with no warning or attempt to be gentle, check * Rushing me through the numbing process, to the point where I was given no choice about whether they would wait any longer to begin the procedure, check * Being rushed out of the exam room immediately after the procedure, even though I was extremely shaky, check * Being passed off to the front desk staff to explain medication and follow-up procedures, check * Generally getting the impression that Dr. Patel had no time for me, and my visit was nothing but an inconvenience for him, check But here's the thing I haven't seen in any other review, and it's the worst thing that has ever happened to me during a dental visit: After having begun the process by using pliers to snap my tooth out, which I was rather taken aback by -- but hey, dental procedures aren't always pretty (of course a bit of warning might have been nice), Dr. Patel began drilling and tooth fragments were flying everywhere in my mouth. The suction being administered by one of the two assistants didn't seem to be doing much. A tooth fragment hit the back of my throat, which convulsed as I tried not to gag and attempted to indicate to the assistant that I was about to choke. At that point, Dr. Patel said to me in an accusatory tone, "you moved your tongue. You made me hit it." The assistants began doing something I couldn't quite figure out, which turned out to be stuffing my mouth with gauze because he'd cut a large swath in the underside of my tongue and it was bleeding badly! When the extraction was finally over, I waited for someone to offer me a rinse cup, but no one did. There wasn't any saline irrigation or other type of process to clean debris from my mouth (perhaps because they didn't want me to see how badly I was bleeding?). I walked out to reception picking bits of tooth fragments out of my mouth. I got home and could already feel my tongue hurting even though my mouth was still quite numb, which was clearly a bad sign. I removed the gauze, which was completely saturated with blood. I moved my tongue carefully with my finger and discovered how big the gash was in its underside. It was shocking! I also found that I had a large bruise on my jawbone. I ended up taking Tylenol with Codeine every day for ten days and my tongue remained extremely sore, making it difficult to eat. The whole experience has been a nightmare. To add to the fun, when I reviewed my statement, I saw they were charging my insurance for a "comprehensive oral exam." I did not receive ANY sort of exam. The first time Patel looked in my mouth was when he jabbed me with the first shot about 45 seconds after he entered the room. Oh, and one other thing -- there's a line to include a tip on the credit card slip when you pay. At an oral surgeon's office. Guess that's because apparently he also does botox in the same office, another thing that would've sent me running the other way if I'd realized it beforehand. I regret not reading the reviews before booking. I hope you don't make the same mistake. read more

I was referred to Dr. Patel by my dentist for wisdom extraction. He was very professional and straight to the point. Procedure was quick and the following was my recovery process: 1st Day: Procedure was not bad at all. It happened so quick. My experience was like the movie Inception or Dr. Strange, where so many things were happening but my mind could not comprehend it. After the surgery, I was bleeding a lot. Just make sure you have gauzes to change every 15 mins. I just had jello and water this day. 2nd Day: There was definitely soreness and minimal pain. Bleeding was slowly stopping, but was still present. I just made sure I took my meds. I was actually able to eat soft foods. 3rd Day: Some moderate pain, but manageable. I was able to resume regular diet believe it or not. 4th Day: Some stinging pain, but they gave me this mouth gel for pain so that helped. I was still able to eat pretty much whatever. Overall, it is honestly not that bad. I guess I had huge expectations of being in pain that it turned out to be really nothing. Lol read more

After reading reviews on how much of a dick the surgeon apparently is and how monstrous the staff is, of course, I was scared to come here! But to my surprise, the staff was incredibly kind. I think the lady at the front desk is new because when I came back to the front to get my Care Credit card back from her, she kinda just looked at me like a scared puppy. Dr. Patel is blunt and works quickly. I went in at 9 and had the whole ordeal done in 20 minutes. (Left around 9:30!) I could only afford to take one wisdom tooth out, and they worked out a deal with me thankfully so I could still have the process get done. (Ended up with a bill of $875. Thank god for CareCredit). Once the procedure started, I was surprised how much pressure I had felt from getting a tooth out! The whole thing felt like a "Touch the ground and go" ordeal, but they stopped when they assumed I had felt some kind of pain. (I was just surprised!) I had to come to Dr.Patel's office day-of and get two impacted wisdom teeth extracted on a Tuesday morning after my dentist told me they couldn't do it at their office. Now I'm about a week and 2 days post-op. Let me tell you, I was scared to pieces as I drove up to the office but I was quickly greeted with a very sweet receptionist, had a total wait time of 10 minutes, and was seen by Dr. Patel who checked my X-Rays and was confident about the procedure. He was funny, exceptionally quick, and created a painless environment for me. I was in and out in 30-35 minutes, which is great because I do NOT want something as traumatic as getting wisdom teeth removed to last any longer than that. As a dentist, he was quick, confident, knew exactly what he was doing, and asked me important questions before and after the procedure about my pain tolerance and whatnot. I received self-explanatory aftercare instructions, but the only thing they did NOT explain was the risk of something called "dry socket" -- just make sure the blood clot forming inside that hole in your mouth does not become dislodged. Look it up on Google. Post-op, I'm feeling just fine, just waiting for my holes to close up but no bleeding. Occasional headaches. One of the teeth he had to remove was extremely difficult so major props to him. Overall great experience. read more

Excellent. I've been a patient of Dr. Patel for over 10 years. What I like about him is: 1. He's quick. My time is never wasted by him or his staff. I never have to wait when I get to the office, I go right in and Dr. Patel is always ready to go. He works quickly and I can see how some people might think this is rushed. However knowing him for as long as I have, I can say he's not rushed, he's an expert and know what's he's doing. He just doesn't need a lot of time and doesn't wast mine. 2. He stands by his work. Following my last point, I've had two implants and they have both gone great. When the top to my implant came unscrewed and fell out, Dr. Patel got me into his office the same day and took care of it instantly. I had a similar issue with a bone graft years ago. I've never paid more than I was originally quoted. 3. Totally painless. I've had problems with other dentists or oral surgeons causing a lot of pain during and after the procedure. Not with Dr. Patel. I have no idea what he does but I never feel anything. I'm too cheap to pay for the full anesthesia so I just get the local. I feel the shots and that is it. UPDATE: Apparently Dr Patel left a whole root. Came to my home land to the dentist and they took out one inch root. If the doctor spent more than twenty seconds with me for the check up, he would have noticed. Now I had to deal with numbing shots and healing of my gum. Not to mention I had to pay again. Kind of disappointed. ------- Wisdom teeth removal from three days ago! Okay so if you're freaking out just like me, don't worry about anything. I wanted to give the service a 4 star just because of the rushed service, but I won't because Dr Patel did his job perfectly, which is what ALL of you reading this want, right? Got scheduled a tooth extraction for 3 teeth only two days in advance. The staff was quick and friendly. The doctor only saw me for literally 15 seconds and said okay yeah let's get you scheduled. I feel like he might have ADD and wants to do things instantaneously. Got there the day of surgery, I was put in a room that was set up with tools and a hardworking assistant who was a pleasure to talk to! The doctor walked in and was a bit irritated it wasn't set up all the way. (Dr Patel if you're reading this, don't overwork your assistants, they are really doing their best). Anyway he walks in sits, I say to him I'm freaking out and asked him to tell me when he puts the needle in... He just says oh you won't feel anything, puts the needle without saying anything (eeeek) and then I get the sensation of losing my breath and feeling numb, say OH SHIT I HATE THIS FEELING, and then next thing I wake up with gauzes in my mouth. I swear I felt like no one did anything and that I was robbed out of my money! He was done in 45 min!! Three teeth pulled out, 2 of which he had to dig up. I don't think anyone involved in this process was malicious, or unskilled, but it felt like everyone trying to get me in and out of the door as quickly as possible. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't great, either, and I want to be as detailed as possible about this experience. I've had bad experiences in the past with other dentists, and made the mistake of not telling my story. I decided to go to this office because I know they do same-day extractions, and I had been to three consultations with other oral surgeons without managing to set up any appointments due to cost. I had two impacted wisdom teeth, both badly decayed, and I was having a hard time eating comfortably. I've had some pretty traumatic experiences with dentists in the past, and was suggested by the receptionist to get a prescription for a single dose of an anti-anxiety med from my general dentist...who said that was odd, and that the oral surgeon should prove that in-office. So when I called back, they said they would send over a prescription. Strange miscommunication, but fine. I read a lot of reviews stating that Dr. Patel is rushed, and they weren't kidding. He looked into my mouth with a tongue suppressant, asked which tooth I wanted to remove (I insisted I wanted both done, but he said it's better to get just one taken out), left the room, the assistant prepared my pricing and paperwork, and all in the 45 seconds I took to read it, she came back in to see if I had signed. Twice. Definitely rushed, but I had done my research and didn't want nor need hand-holding. So then off to the exam room, which seemed barely equipped - he didn't even have one of those overhead light cranes attached to the seat, just a headlamp. (Perhaps this is common for clinics?) Dr. Patel asked if I was ready for my shot BEFORE offering a topical numbing gel, which he applied when I asked for it, and then immediately went for the shot. (Ouch.) The assistant he worked with was lovely and reassuring, but dude was working on my mouth like he was trying to beat a world record (or late for his next appointment, which my friend in the lobby overheard the receptionist tell the next patient). Some notable quotes were, "Nothing fun happens here" (no shit), "This isn't a fun thing to get done when you're awake" (if I could afford general anesthesia, I would have gotten it), and, my favorite: "Just don't hate me, okay?" as he kind of gingerly tapped me on the shoulder, asking if I was okay here and there. Once again, I don't think he intended to be cruel, but if you don't like a dentist who's kind of casual in how he talks to you, you certainly won't be a fan of him. I opted for local anesthesia, and a part of me wishes I had been under -- he was throwing tools down so hard and quickly, loudly banging against the instrument tray. I've never seen a dentist perform this way before, and it made my whole body tense up. Then, after two ugly-sounding cracks and an uncomfortable 5-6 minutes, my tooth was gone and gauze took its place. Another strange thing I noticed is that his post-op recovery instructions were not exactly great. I've had an extraction done before and had a pretty solid idea of what to expect post-op. I'm not a dentist, but I don't think anyone would tell you that you could drink coffee on day 1 (caffeine is incredibly dehydrating), or rice by day 3 (it can get stuck in the extraction site). If you've never had an extraction before, I recommend seeking a more detailed recovery plan online for what to eat/drink, etc. I'm on day 3 now, and because I'm very vigilant about recovery, I seem to be healing fine, no pain and very little discomfort. (Get one of those goofy-looking cold/hot therapy chin and jaw wraps, you won't regret it.) The most uncomfortable part has been the massive mound of scar tissue on my inner cheek. I'm unsure if this is a normal occurance, or a result of his rushed work. Yes, I did my research, but this being my first experience with removing an impacted tooth, I wish I would've been given more clarity into the healing process. If you have very few other choices like me, and a crappy HMO plan, maybe this is an office you'll go to. I will credit him that the entire experience took about 15 minutes from when I sat down with my paperwork to when I walked out with gauze. But is that a good thing? I'm not feeling positive about the experience in retrospect, and I think I'll go elsewhere to get my second wisdom tooth removed in a few weeks. TL;DR: Three stars because my expectations were already pretty low; the front desk folks were straightforward; Dr. Patel was nice in a casual kind of way, but rushed his work; and frankly, the dose of Valium kept me from losing my shit while it was happening. read more

I made a Yelp account specifically so I could give this review. My experience with Dr. Patel is fresh in my mind- since I just left the "consultation" for extraction of my partially erupted wisdom tooth about 20 mins ago. I was referred to Dr. Patel by my dentist who did not feel comfortable extracting my wisdom tooth due to its proximity to a nerve in my jaw. I paid $65 to literally speak with Dr. Patel for less than 5 mins. He has a very cocky attitude about him- waltzed in the room and had to look down at my xrays to know my name. He immediately started off with fasting instructions for sedation, without even asking me if I want to be sedated! He also did not know I only want 1 wisdom tooth extracted, even though I told the reception staff that at the time I booked my appointment. I told him due to cost and the fact that my erupted tooth should be fairly easy to extract that I do not want sedation. He said "Oh okay that will be easy and much cheaper In and out in 10 mins." And then walked towards the exam door to leave. I think he could tell by my face that I couldn't believe he wasn't explaining things more thoroughly, so he said "Wish I could tell you more. But it's that straight forward." I had to ask him for an estimate for cost. He did not offer one, nor did he offer to explain possible complications, pros and cons for sedation vs. local, etc. I will not be returning to his office for the removal of my tooth. These poor Yelp reviews are spot-on to my personal experience today. I would have been spending over $500 out-of-pocket to have this procedure done. I understand that for him it's as easy as in-and-out, but for someone who has had no prior dental issues it's not. If I'm paying $65 for a consult with you and another $500 for the procedure, I expect a little more interaction. Dr. Patel needs to brush up on his people skills. He isn't the only oral surgeon in Chicago, and he definitely won't be mine. read more

All the negative reviews on this place are from snowflakes who want to be treated like gods everywhere they go. The reviews are correct that Dr. Patel doesn't have the best bed side manner. He's very brief and frequently talks to you as he walks away. But who cares? I'm paying him to take a tooth out not be my best friend. He does his job and he does it quick. I was in the operating room for a total of 7 minutes. He walked in, asked if I was ready, I said yes, he numbed me up, waited a few minutes for it to take effect, he said hold your head steady there's going to be a lot of pressure, felt him push down twice and then he said he was done. I said thanks and he left the room. That was the extent of my stay. This is not a children's dentist, he's not going to baby you through the procedure. He's going to come in and do his job. If you want someone to hold your hand and give you a lollipop when it's all over maybe this isn't the place for you. Only reason they lose a star is because i was reschuled twice. read more

Let me start off by saying I cannot believe how dramatic some of these posts are! I work in medical, so I'm used to trying to get work done quickly in non-ideal conditions, so in my opinion the recovery rooms at this office were actually kind of a nice surprise, albeit small, but I prefer that over sitting in the waiting room or staying in the procedure chair. The consult with Dr. Patel was quick, but he spoke to my level, and most importantly I felt COMFORTABLE and confident in him that he would do a good job. I had two horribly impacted bottom teeth, and he warned me about them being difficult, so I knew that the surgery would be on the complicated side, and I would have to be patient with my recovery. Total procedure time was about 40 minutes. The anesthesia was awesome, it was my first time having any type of hallucination! Good times haha. Afterwards I was so disoriented and groggy, but I was back to my normal self after about 20 minutes. I scheduled a 1 week follow up visit with him at the front desk before I left. Day 1-3 of recovery was fine, almost no pain or discomfort. Bleeding stopped on day 4. Pain for me began day 5. Note: I'll admit I was a bit proactive with managing my pain, and I used a syringe to irrigate the openings when there was food caught in them. Follow up appointment went smoothly as well.. he said he expects that I would still be sore and that if I needed a refill on pain medication it was no problem (Also gave me a syringe to irrigate the openings. But it isn't as good as the one I was using before). I'm suspicious of any review on here complaining of Dr. Patel giving them a hard time about a refill on their pain meds - makes me question the patient and their history. Anyway, it's been almost 2 weeks. I am still in some pain, but nothing too crazy. If any complications arise, I will update this review, but so far so good! read more

kam patel did my wisdom teeth removal was the worst experience I've ever had in my life. Didn't like when I said I want to do just local anesthesia and not put me to sleep. Everything was in rush and even told me that I need to harry up I'm so late, and while was removing my teeth I felt pain and was raising my hands to show that I feel pain he didn't care and kept on telling me "you want local? This local.. I told you to put you to sleep and you said no." overall Very bad experience. Never seen something like this before. Honestly If didn't request days off from job already and had plenty of time I would of got up right at that moment and smack him in the face. I really don't recommend this guy to anybody read more

What follows is a summary of my experience at the Belmont Ave location: I booked an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Patel for 3 wisdom teeth extractions. My consultation lasted no more than 2 minutes - all I was told was that I would need to book my surgery. As the doctor ran to his next appointment, I asked, "are they impacted?" to which he relied hurriedly "yes" as he walked out of the room. Isn't it common practice that your doctor spends time answering your questions? Anyway, because I was on holiday break, I decided to book the surgery for the following business day. I should have read these Yelp reviews because they are spot on. Now, let's talk about the day of my surgery. I was accompanied to my room by 2-3 assistants (all of whom were very nice), who strapped me to my chair, whereupon the doctor comes in, doesn't even say a word to me, and plugs in an IV for the anesthesia. No more than 30 minutes later, I am woken up by his assistant(s) who walk me to a recovery closet (best way to describe it) for me to wait on my ride to arrive. I was told that I would receive a call in the 2-3 days following my procedure as a check up to see how I was recovering. That call never happened. Already disappointed by the lack of attention, I had started to experience a sharp, lingering pain in my jaw four days following surgery. When I called the clinic, I was told that the doctor was out of the country and that there was no "back up" doctor who could see me at the clinic. How unethical and unprofessional to book a surgery when you know that you're going to be out of the country. What if there are complications with the patient following their procedure? Luckily, after a second call explaining the pain that I was experiencing, a nurse practitioner was able to see me and pack the area with medication. 2.5 weeks later I'm feeling better, but I would definitely not recommend this place. Don't be fooled by the Lakeview location and decor. The service I received was really subpar to say the least. I never got the feeling that this Doctor or his practice truly cared about my wellbeing. I also have several questions about the charges that appeared on my bill. I will be calling my insurance for them to investigate further - I would implore anyone who gets a procedure done here to confirm all charges as truly legitimate indeed. read more

I had to come in to get an emergency wisdom tooth and a molar extracted bc my previous (completely incompetent) dentist put a filling right over the molar's roots (normally this would need to be a root canal) but those roots were wrapped around a wisdom tooth so the filling was completely unnecessary. So I had sudden sharp pain over the holiday and Dr. Patel was the only one my other dentist (not the incompetent one) could find that day to do the extraction. I was a hot mess, balling my eyes out all over the office, being awful to the assistants (who were wonderful and patient with me and held my hand) and I'm so embarrassed. Dr. Patel comes in, numbs me up so fast I felt like he sedated me. Five min later, he storms in with a pair of pliers, says I'm going to feel a lot of pressure, and rips out both my teeth - all in under ten minutes. I was about to do it myself, that's how bad the pain was. Now it's 48 hours later and I still have no pain. I think it's fine but won't know if anything is wrong for a couple weeks. Hoping it's okay. So if you are considering Dr. Patel, just know that he is very quick, pretty bossy, but gets the job done. The assistants are wonderful. I will be coming back to him to get my other wisdom teeth out. read more

I would NEVER recommend the Lakeview location. I recently moved to Chicago and had my wisdom teeth removed about 6 months ago. I was experiencing some pain and my oral surgeon back home recommended seeing someone in Chicago because I wasn't able to make it back to them. I made the appointment with great difficulty because the staff kept saying they needed to call me back and never did. When I finally got in I was treated well by the front desk staff, but the doctor came in and just starting poking in my (very sore mouth) without any sort of introduction and explanation. I was told I needed immediate, very expensive surgery and they would call me in a few days to schedule this. I never received any follow up. I even called twice asking for a follow up and no one ever got back to me. Fortunately, I was able (again with great difficulty) to have the x-rays sent to my doctor back home. He told me everything was healing very well and I just had a minor infection easily sorted out with a round of antibiotics. My oral surgeon told me it sounded like the Lakeview office just wanted me to have an expensive and completely unnecessary surgery to make some extra money off of me. read more

My first experience with Dr. Patel was back when I was 11 or 12 (I'm 27 now). I was referred to him by my orthodontist who noticed my cuspids were growing in the roof of my mouth (I know, weird) and needed to be extracted before getting braces. My parents felt confident in him doing the surgery and it went great. Now, fast forward a few years, I decided to get my impacted wisdom teeth extracted by him as I had a good experience the first time. I opted for IV sedation and so glad I did. In recovery, I do remember getting checked on a few times which was nice. I even received a call from him the following day to see how I was feeling. He's a professional who is straight to the point, his front desk staff is friendly, and I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. I definitely recommend him. read more

Let me just start off by saying that the actual procedure went fine, it was afterwards that my experience with Dr Patel went downhill. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out last July. I was referred to Dr Patel by my dentist at Art of Modern Dentistry. I came in for the initial consultation, and everything went fine. I was extremely nervous and wasn't exactly thrilled about having to have it done, and I felt like Dr Patel was very good about explaining the procedure and what it was going to be like afterwards. I came in the day of surgery, got brought back to the room relatively quickly, and the procedure was over and done in about 25 minutes. I went home that day and I was in some pain but it was to a level I had expected. Then the pain just never went away. I was about 3 days post-op when I went back to work and my jaw was so sore I could barely talk. I continued to think that it was probably nothing, but I called the office anyway to make sure everything was alright. The staff were extremely rude on the phone and acted like I was bothering them for calling to ask, and they pretty much just told me to look at the handout they gave me if I had any concerns. Really? I kept having pain, and then both of the clots from my bottom extractions came out. And then the pain got even worse. I had been taking the Percocet he gave me, but since I had to work I really wasn't taking them much. I tried to suck it up and take Motrin but it just wasn't cutting it. I called his office again and asked if he could see me since it had been well over a week and I was still in a lot of pain. I went in to have Dr Patel look at my extraction sites and to ask him why I still couldn't open my jaw, and why I was still having so much pain. He seriously took a tongue depresser, looked at the left side of my mouth for less than a second and said "Yea, you're fine." So I asked again if he could just look a little closer, or to explain why the pain was still so bad and responded with, "Listen, I'm not giving you any more pain pills." Are you kidding me? I not once asked for any pain medicine. I was simply asking the man to look at my mouth. I couldn't believe it. How dare you acuse me of drug seeking when all I wanted was for you to look at the mess you made of my mouth?? I ended up being seen by my dentist the next day and he believed that I had dry sockets, and that they would improve with time, and that I had TMJ. That's all I wanted Dr Patel to do. To explain why I still had pain, and to reassure me that there wasn't something wrong. Nope, instead I got accused of being a drug seeker. I'll NEVER go back here, but luckily my wisdom teeth are all out so I should never have to. read more

Run, not crawl, from this practice. If I could give zero stars, I would. I was referred to Dr. Patel from my dentist due to an infected tooth, which required extraction. Since this was the only oral surgeon in my dental insurance network, and could get me in the same week, I really didn't have much of a choice on where to go. When I arrived, Dr. Patel did a very hasty consultation and tried to wisk me away to the procedure chair within 10 minutes without explaining all the procedures or going over all the options (sedation, local anesthesia, what insurance would actually pay, risks and complications), then I was hit up by the front desk to pay their "estimated amount" before I even sat down for the procedure. I should say that they have been withholding this amount from me for 3 months while they re-bill insurance since their initial claim didn't include all the services (they left off anesthesia), so they had to re-file, and hung on to the deposit. Would be nice if they paid interest on this, like a bank. LOL When I entered the procedure room, I requested that any shots or anesthesia be administered to the left arm, since I am right handed. You should have heard the complaints and *sighs* from Dr. Patel. But eventually he did it. When I woke up, I was in a strange, curtained room (not even a door), totally disoriented. Then, since they didn't wake me when my friend was there to pick me up (she had to leave to go to work), let me get into a cab, when I was still heavily sedated and could barely walk (they had a dental assistant walk help me walk to the cab). This is highly unethical and not very responsible on their part! They didn't even call me until the next morning to see if I got home ok. How is this ethical practice? Most doctor's offices would never allow this. No the pain really starts...with billing. Not only did they retain a deposit (of what my estimated charges would be), but they did not bill all the services correctly, or all at once, dragging this procedure out for several months. On top of this, my insurance recommended to me (after the procedure) that a pre-estimate should have been done (mind you this takes 30 days - not likely you are going to wait for this with an aching, infected tooth) or the dentist should have called to clarify the charges before preceding. As a result, what should have been a several hundred dollar bill is now in the $1,000s. Still going back and forth on this, 3 months later. That is, if you can get a timely call back. Billing really needs improvement in this office. read more

Dr. Patel as a surgeon is talented, quick, smart, and made me feel at ease. He extracted 4 of my pre-molars in under half an hour. 5 Stars for him. 2 Stars for his office billing me and my insurance for 'complicated surgical extractions requiring sectioning' at a much high rate instead of the correct and lower priced 'extractions requiring forceps elevation'. When I called and questioned his billing staff person, she shrugged me off and said "That's how we deserve to bill it, always have. Sorry!". I'm disputing the claim with my insurance company. I don't know if it's right to charge me and charge my insurer for a higher level of services that weren't performed. I'm looking forward to a refund of my overpayment. read more

My 15 year old daughter and I both had our wisdom teeth removed within a month of each other. So I have 2 separate experiences that were consistently positive. Evelyn at the front desk was organized, attentive, very sweet and helpful. Scheduling was quick and easy and very accommodating to my hectic schedule. Dr. Patel was straight forward and to the point and was very knowledgeable. He answered my questions quickly and clearly, and gave the same courtesies to my daughter. The surgery it's self was quick and painless as I opted to be sedated. I don't know who wouldn't want to be, I prefer to have no recollection of such a procedure. My daughters surgery was the same, she was certainly nervous going in, and she asked a lot of questions which were answered with ease making her feel more comfortable and her procedure was done before she knew it. The recovery rooms are comfy enough as we came out of sedation and we were walked to our car personally by the staff. Dr. Patel called us himself the next day to follow up and check on how we were both doing each time. We both healed well with minimal pain. I recommend the sockit gel to numb some of the pain, Day 5 was the worst, which was expected and manageable. So all around I found this place to be consistent, knowledgeable, accommodating, quick and efficient. If you need such a procedure I highly recommend this place. FIVE STARS all around!!! I'm only on day 3 post-surgery time but I'll update again once everything has healed. Now personally, I got all 4 out, one being impacted. I was told that the impacted one would hurt the most, which is true. I've been healing nicely so far, and really have had minimal pain that has been easily relieved with ibuprofen, half pills of vicodin before I go to bed, and icing my cheeks whenever the pain kicks in a little. The pain for me isn't even at the hole site, its all the rest of my gums. I was a bit out of it after the surgery due to being sedated, but I snapped out of it within an hour. Once again, being put to sleep can affect people very differently. I was never swollen due to my icing. If anything the worst part about all of it is not being able to eat or really do anything because I want to keep with my regimen of icing & taking ibuprofen consistent to keep me out of pain. Dr. Patel and his staff have been very helpful, and I don't think his office is dingy at all. I did call them once to ask about my very slight bleeding (which stopped an hour later), and the nurse was very helpful. I'll update as my progress continues! UPDATE: One issue I had today was that I keep getting food stuck in the holes. I called the office and they assured me I'd be fine until Thursday when I see them again. Teeth are still hurting but my roommate also gave me a oral numbing gel which has been good for the worst of it (i.e. when I wake up and my teeth feel like they're fighting to get out). OK so on Day 8 now. On day 6 I woke up with horrid pain when I spit, so they told me to come in and they put some "packing" in the hole of the impacted one I had which relieved some pain, but not the spitting pain immediately. That went away almost instantly somehow. I went in for my official follow up visit today and they told me everything is OK, that I can start rinsing with the plastic syringe, and that I should expect the holes to close soon enough. I've still got moderate amounts of pain, but its nothing specific. I haven't been getting the best sleep due to it, but I can tell that if I didn't have the impacted one I'd be fine. Soon enough! Overall all the staff have been extremely responsive, helpful, and very comforting when I get worried. Apparently I'm not good with open wounds in my mouth. I'll give one final update when all is healed. Update: It's officially been 5 weeks now. Pain went away by day 10 (longer than I expected!). My last impacted hole is still big enough to get food stuck in it a little bit. I was cleaning out the hole for about the first 3.5 weeks and finally gave up due to just being tired of doing it. It is definitely healing, still, but I do kind of wish that this hole had gotten stitches so it would have healed faster - if that's even true? No idea. haha UPDATE: It's been about 3 months, and I've been noticing a sharp point in my gum right near one of the removal points - guess what? There's a piece of tooth to still stuck in my gums, which my dentist will now have to remove for me next week. As you can read above, I had a pretty good experience - until I realized he failed to clear out the tooth completely and now I have a piece stuck there. Down to 4 stars for the hassle, although I don't know how much of it can be controlled?! read more

"Don't worry, you're in good hands" Dr. Patel told me several times before my wisdom teeth extraction. He said it so many times that I started to wonder who he was trying to convince. Before the procedure, he ties me to a chair, draws up a vile of murky liquid and says to me, "You'll probably like this: in just a second it'll feel like you've just had an entire pitcher of margaritas". AW. SHIT. I think, I'M GONNA NEED MORE THAN THAT. My heart races and I wonder how I can untie myself from the chair without being noticed. A few seconds later I was blackout drunk and asleep. ....only to wake up surrounded by five or six people in white masks and bright headlamps hunched over me, yelling for more SUCTION! and contorting my head and face around in every direction, also there's a jackhammer that seems to be blasting endlessly away at the depths of my skull.... ...I was surprised, but I'm calm. Then I looked to the heart monitor next to me to see how I was doing... it was a flatline. Dr. Patel seems to be getting louder and the next 3-4 minutes seemed both like an eternity and an instant while I stare at that flat line on the heart monitor screen and I think: OK, this is it, I'm dying. My life is passing before my eyes, and I'm realizing my last moment will be during a dental procedure. Yet I don't even seem to care. Weird. Why is mortality suddenly so blase? Oh yea: the margaritas. He was right, I do like those, this isn't a bad way to go. And at least my wisdom teeth will finally be out, and I won't die with that still on my to-do list. Suddenly I'm untied from the chair and the nurse is lifting me to walk .... which i guess means i'm not dead..... I look down at my limbs which appear to be moving by my own volition, so I check the heart monitor to make sure, but it was replaced by a TV playing The Today Show. Meta. I'm somehow walked into what seems like a giant opium den for the margaritas-come-down. There I came to the realization that I just watched how the figurative sausage got made, and it blew my mind. I went home, experienced minimal pain, a quick recovery period, and my follow up was perfect... no problems. My dentist (who recommended Dr. Patel, no doubt) even remarked that it looked like a great job. My insurance only covered a portion of it. I doubt Opium Dens and The Don't Care About Death Drug were covered under my PPO, but I've had enough bad dental procedures that I didn't care. Worth it, really. read more

If you want to be treated badly and cool about paying for it, you'll find this place ideal. I went there 1 month ago for my wisdom teeth removal. Mr. Patel was late and when he walked in the patient room, he didn't introduce himself but uttered "talk to me". He pushed for the panoramic X-ray however he didn't have the patience to explain what it was and why I needed it. The whole conversation lasted for 5 mins. I felt very uncomfortable around a rude person like him. I should've walked out of the clinic right away when he yelled at me moving my head to check my teeth. I was very upset about it and of course I received a bill from him charging for oral exam today. The least I can do is let people know my experience. The bottom line is he is not the only oral surgeon left in Chicago. read more

Dr. Patel and his entire staff are my heroes!!!!! An infected, abscessed wisdom tooth is probably the worst (non-life threatening) thing anyone could go through. It was terrible. From the moment I called to my last follow-up visit I was treated with such an outstanding level of care and genuine concern for my well-being. Haha, even when I spazzed out when coming out of the anesthesia. You cannot ask for more from a health care provider!! Oral surgery is never pleasant, in fact it's downright awful, but LOMS makes it bearable. read more
