Met a group of friends for our monthly lunch. We'd heard good things about quality of the food and excellent service. Walking in the atmosphere was peaceful and serene. Clean. Lots of seating. All tables were preset with paper placemats, napkins and chopsticks. Glasses of water & lemon slices arrived while we searched the menu. Each of us selected the lunch bento box: choice of entree with green salad, tempura veggies/shrimp, bowl of rice, California roll sushi and delicious miso soup. Whoa. Lots of food. Half of us selected an entree of teriyaki chicken, the others ordered teriyaki fish (salmon or mackerel). Ginger, wasabi and low-sodium soy sauce were available upon request. The food was tasty and plentiful. Everyone brought home half their meal for dinner. Exceptional service. Since it's so close to Easter one of our members brought treats: milk chocolate bunnies, Dubai chocolate drops, and an assortment of Easter cookies and candies. We did not order dessert. My favorites were the yellowtail and uni sushi - both were standout. Had a craving for some loaded sushi rolls and came across Orange Roll on Yelp. Their menu has a good variety of non-traditional sushi rolls, along with regular rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. We got these rolls: - Sunrise - spicy tuna, avocado, shrimp tempura inside and peppered albacore on the outside - Stinky - imitation crab, avocado, cucumber inside and albacore, fresh onion, and garlic butter on the outside. The greeting was a tad awkward and slow, since I visited during the middle of the afternoon. The seating environment was very woody, and the lighting was just enough to neither be dim nor bright. After sitting down, I ordered their Noodle Combo (Seafood Ramen) with California Roll, not expecting much at this price point. After all, I just wanted a quick bite. To my surprise, the seafood ramen had well-cooked squid and mussell - and even a fair amount. The ramen could have been instant, but the texture was amazing, too. The California Roll was rolled with perfection. The avocado, cucumber, and imitation crab were tucked so perfectly. The service at this place is basically a masterclass in how to handle takeout and delivery which frankly is the only service we really care about these days. They get our order right every single time a feat which we are pretty sure involves some kind of sorcery and the packaging is immaculate. Their portions are also generous enough to feed a small army which is ideal because our appetite usually qualifies as a small army. We are reviewing this place mostly based on the vibe it gives off when we pick up our massive bag of food or when the delivery driver drops it off lol. The actual physical restaurant has that clean bustling energy of a place that knows it is making great food and does not have time for unnecessary fluff. It is bright well kept and feels organized which gives us confidence that our precious sushi is being handled with respect and precision. It is the kind of place that looks efficient and trustworthy which means we can focus less on the environment and more on getting our hands on that delicious roll. The menu here is truly the star of the show because they are a legitimate one stop shop for everything we crave. We can get amazing fresh sushi and excellent hot cooked food all in one glorious order so nobody has to compromise and that is the key to a happy home. The diversity is impressive and our current obsession is the Rainbow Chef Special Roll which is seriously a work of art and tastes even better than it looks. The rolls don't even come with a little side salad or anything. When I got the rainbow roll the avocado was brown and the fish looked slimy and old. I was inclined to ask for a refund but I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. I was shocked at the low quality of the sushi roll. Stopped by for a quick dinner around 5pm. It was starting to get a queue so I can definitely see a wait if you come past 6pm on prime days. I ordered the combo and in retrospect, I wished I ordered other rolls. For my combo, I chose the spicy tuna roll and the crispy roll. I didn't like the spicy tuna roll much and felt like it all kept falling apart when I was eating. The crispy roll was very basic but hit the spot. My miso soup came warm and very quickly cooled down. Orange Roll in Cypress used to be my go-to sushi spot. The sushi was always fresh, flavorful, and worth recommending. However, my last two visits completely changed my perspective. The quality of the fish has noticeably declined--both times the fish tasted off and didn't seem fresh. On my most recent visit, I brought a friend who had never been there before. He ordered a type of fish, but it smelled and tasted strange, and he couldn't eat it. I politely let the server know, and they took the dish back to the sushi bar. What happened next really shocked me. The chef made a very rude, exaggerated face and started saying loudly that we were wasting food and shouldn't have returned it. The server didn't try to smooth things over--instead, they came back with the bill and said they could only remove half the price of the dish. It felt very unwelcoming and unprofessional. We paid the bill and left without making a scene, but this entire experience left a bad taste--literally and figuratively. I no longer feel comfortable dining here, and I won't be coming back. I've already told friends and family in Cypress and nearby areas to avoid this place. There are plenty of sushi spots in Orange and LA County with better quality, better service, and a more respectful attitude toward customers. read more
