I saw that this was opening a while ago and have wanted to come here for some time and my friends on the east coast hyped it up as well since they ate there often! And honestly, really... this is probably the best set of rice balls I have ever had in my life. They're so affordable, so delicious, so perfectly omusubi that I was thinking about them for a while afterward. It's a pretty unassuming part of the Mitsuwa food court, without much different to other layouts but honestly, if you enjoy rice balls this is a MUST. Service was very prompt and friendly, we were there around lunch time and a few customers were around. While we got a table, it was ready with karaage and soup in about a few minutes. I definitely want to try each rice ball once, the spicy bomb looks like one I'd get again and again! For my first go around though, I got the eel and tuna.. I want more though... next time!

Omusubi Gonbei is amazing! I really love their fresh onigiri perfect and easy to enjoy, located right in the food court at Mitsuwa Marketplace. Great for eating on the spot, taking to go, or saving for lunch the next day. My favorites are Karaage Ball and Bomb. The filling is just right, the price is reasonable $3-$5 and everything is very fresh. These onigiri are much better than the ones sold inside Mitsuwa $2-$3 which are often cold, dry, and have very little filling that isn't even centered properly in the rice ball. The service here is also very good. Make sure to come earlier in the day so you don't miss out on your favorite flavors.

First off, isn't the name misspelled? Shouldn't it be Omusubi and not Omubusi? Whatever. I've come here about 4-5x now and each time the rice balls have been good. The rice is slightly sticky with a nice chew to it and tends to hold up well as an onigiri. I think the filling in the onigiri is fair. Onigiri itself is not supposed to be overpacked with fillings. Whatever filling is used it is supposed to just enhance the rice itself. They range in price from $2.50 to $4.80 each. Service was quick, easy n friendly. If they were out a particular flavor then ask them and they may make new ones just for you. They also offer karaage chicken n miso soup. Located inside the new Mitsuwa market in the food court. The place is take-out only but they have shared tables and chairs area so grab yourself a seat there.

These rice balls are huge. Rice to filling ratio may be a bit off, heavy on rice. I would definitely come back. I love fresh made onigiri . The staff odd so friendly and it's fun watching them make it. The Bomb one is a must try!

Whether it's a few for on-the-go or a whole assortment for a explorative meal, rice balls make the perfect bite-sized eats. The famed Omusubi Gonbei has come to OC! They're located within the food court at the new Mitsuwa in Cypress. They're fast, efficient, and boast a wide variety of rice balls. Fish, meats, veggies, brown vs. white rice - they've got it all covered! I went with the Curry & Edamame, Takana (Pickled Mustard Greens), and Spicy Chicken. Not a single miss. My personal favorite had to be the Curry & Edamame. A really pleasant change if you're in the mood for a flavor-packed rice ball. One minor note, I wish the filling-to-rice ratio was a bit more balanced, but other than that, no complaints! Be sure to grab a handheld snack here before you peruse around the new market.

Located inside the new Mitsua marketplace in the city of Cypress, this food stall offers premade and fresh onigiri and musubi's. They sell similar onigiri's inside the matrket, however these are fresh and not refrigerated. I bought a few to try like the Tuna Mayo, Eel, Shrimp Tempura, Oysters, and Konbu (seaweed). As they were fresh making the rice nice and soft and sticky, the onigiri's lacked flavor. No seasoning or sauce to bring out some flavor. The prices here were slightly higher compared to inside the grocery store and the seaweed was soggy and could not hold a crunch. The ones in the grocery store, the nori is wrapped separately so it's fresh and crispy. I think next time I'll buy one from here and one from the grocery store and do a side by side comparison.

    1. The musubis and Karaage chicken were good! I really like the chicken! 2. The spot has fun casual vibes! It is part of a food court! 3. The staff was friendly and timely with my order! It was ready in about 5 mins! 4. There are only indoor seatings! Seating can get crowded depending on time and day! 5. Parking lot is huge! Spots are single-lined! Note: There is a restroom available for customers! Photo: Musubi and Karaage

Perfect for an on-the-go snack or meal, these omusubi are priced right for trying a few at a time. So far I've had: Grilled Eel: Really good. That eel sauce always hits the spot. Kombu: Tasty and holds up well for eating later. Shiso: Wasn't my favorite. Chashu Pork: Tasty! Fried Oyster: Needed a little something extra. Shrimp Tempura: Can't go wrong with shrimp tempura. Eat this one while fresh. If you can't eat them all in one go, keep them refrigerated for a day or so and then heat for about 30 seconds in a microwave (probably less time if you have a higher powered microwave).

    Maggie P.

Can't go wrong with omusubi inside Mitsuwa! Solid option without the wait. They have a wide variety of options! We had the salmon, tuna, bomb, and CMT. Parking was okay, didn't have too much trouble on a weeknight. Tables are limited, most likely because it's a new Mitsuwa. Would definitely stop by again.

Not too busy place and they get your order right away. Very casual stall in a newly opened Mitsuwa. Their variety of flavors drew me in, but the onigiri itself did not hit the spot. I tried the fried oyster onigiri, and it did not seem very fresh but rather room temp. The fried oyster had zero crispiness and the rice itself seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. Their karage chicken was okay not very memorable. While it's fairly priced, I wouldn't recommend this Omusubi Gonbei unless you plan to reheat the food yourself.

I was thinking of what I wanted for a quick bite to eat while running errands, and immediately pivoted to this place. The rice balls were fresh and the filling was enough to get you by. Cheap and definitely gets you satisfied

I've been wanting to check this spot ever since my brother showed me photos from his visit at the new Mitsuwa in Cypress. They have a lot of options of omusubi and onigiri and if I had the appetite to try one of each in one sitting, I would. They also sell karaage too, and it's pretty decent. The filling to rice ratio in my opinion could be better. Overall, it's a good spot for a snack! Hope management at Mitsuwa can work together with the food court restaurants to control the fly problem though.

    Terry M.

The Food: Tons of tasty omusubi and onigiri treats! So many options to choose from! My kids were in awe! :) The Service: Friendly and efficient, which is good as the line was consistently out the door the entire time we were there. Everyone in Cypress is happy to have a proper Japanese store and eatery here. ;) The ambiance: Clean and new, a good amount of seating in single, dual, and quad seating options. Again, this is good as the place is packed to the gills. One tragic thing is that this place is next to the race track, so the fly situation is kinda wild; hopefully something can be done about that going forward, but do not let this discourage you, the omusubi are tasty and can be eaten on the go!

At the very least, it has been my favorite chain of Japanese markets, but it stinks how they have just one location in the Bay Area! In fact, across my limited number of trips to SoCal, I've already visited more locations down here than back at home and I have to say - this location may be the newest, but it's also my least favorite one I've been to. Like pretty much every other Mitsuwa I've been to, this location has a cute little food court with a half dozen or so eateries offering a variety of food options - from ramen, udon, and curry rice plates to onigiri, matcha, and Japanese sweets. As for the market, it has all of the usual offerings you would expect - a solid selection of fresh produce, meats, seafood, frozen foods, pantry staples, alcohol, snacks, and sections of prepared foods and sushi to choose from. What's more, as a whole, everything here felt so new and clean (which makes sense in hindsight, as it apparently opened only back in November). With all of that having been said, though, it's weird to me how this place still felt a bit...lacking. While you can find a decent mix of things to eat at their food court, it's pretty much limited to three eateries, so don't be surprised to see lines when it's busy. Also, despite how new it is, the market feels smaller than other Mitsuwas I've been to. That's not inherently bad, but pickings felt relatively slim for certain meats and produce we were looking for, as well as their bento boxes and sushi. Granted, it probably didn't help that we were here on a Sunday and the place was packed with customers, but it's not like we stopped in towards the end of the day either. All in all, while I definitely think there are plenty of positives about this location, I'd be lying if I said I was as impressed with this one as I was by their location in Costa Mesa. It's definitely nice how new it is and I would never be opposed to going to any Mitsuwa, but if I lived out this way, it'd be tough not to know whether I'll be able to get everything I need here or if I'll also need to stop off somewhere else. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.

The Zarusoba was good, but it would be nice if they gave a bit more sauce for dipping. I also got a Sashimi Salad, which had a lot of sashimi! It had salmon, tuna, and a white fish. Pretty good, but it could have used a little more dressing as well. The Combination Plate with Salmon and Tempura was enjoyable. It comes with a piece of salmon, a variety of tempura (shrimp, broccoli, sweet potato, onion), side salad, miso soup, rice, tempura sauce, and teriyaki sauce. Salmon was cooked well, and I liked all of the tempura! Their Lunch Specials are originally what caught my eye, but it seems like they don't have anything similar for dinner. Instead, everything is a la carte with the exception of a few combination plates. I wish they would do dinner specials similar to their lunch specials! Parking here is pretty difficult. The lot gets packed with several cars circling around hunting for a spot. They're also going some construction right now which doesn't help. It makes it easy to see what you'll be getting and helps me make a decision. I was there for a late lunch and ordered the pork katsu curry plate and also, for an additional fee, added an omelette on top of the rice (omu-curry). I was given a pager by the friendly fellow at the counter and my meal was made in less than ten minutes. I sat and ate in the clean, comfortable food court. The sake and Japanese beer selection is a decent size and the menu has enough variety that you could come back multiple times and still find something new to try. We ordered two sushi rolls and something called a Monkey Ball -- a mushroom stuffed with tuna and deep-fried. Sounds straightforward, but it was genuinely delicious and even a little elegant-looking on the plate. The sushi was well-prepared with nice presentation, and it tasted clean and vibrant -- I know everyone defaults to "fresh," and yes, you'd hope any sushi restaurant serves fresh fish, but there's a quality here that earns the word. Besides sushi, there were a lot of other created items they had on the menu that I was interested in, but I felt like sushi this evening. They're open until 1 AM, which tells you something: this place is popular and well-liked enough to keep the lights on late. I passed them 1000 times and I'm glad I stopped by. Come give them a shot. We were staying at a relatives place nearby and this was about a mile walk from our place and decided to get takeout. This store is a hidden gem and the food was very good for what we paid. We got the bulgogi beef bento and the grilled unagi bento. Both of them were very filling and came with some banchan (korean side dishes), mixed tempura, miso soup, rice, and some sashimi. The sashimi was actually very good and was pleasantly surprised that it came with the bento meal. The workers were friendly as I came in and mentioned my name for pick up. Overall our experience with takeout was phenomenal and would definitely come back again for dine-in.
