Located inside Cypress Mitsuwa as part of their small food court, this place offers a large number of Japanese plates with the focus on katsu and curry. These are the sort of eateries I seek out when I go to Japan as they are affordable, filling, and satisfying. Just as they do in Japan, they have a large display case on the wall which is filled with a couple dozen realistic plastic displays of the various plates they offer. It makes it easy to see what you'll be getting and helps me make a decision. I was there for a late lunch and ordered the pork katsu curry plate and also, for an additional fee, added an omelette on top of the rice (omu-curry). I was given a pager by the friendly fellow at the counter and my meal was made in less than ten minutes. I sat and ate in the clean, comfortable food court. The pork was good quality, very tender, with a crunchy panko coating. The rice was done perfectly and the omelette on top was delicious with a buttery taste and soft texture. I loved the curry; it had excellent flavor and complemented the pork well. There were also some slices of hard-boiled egg and some bits of radish on the plate as well as a cabbage salad. My single complaint is that the salad had no dressing so was rather "blah" compared to everything else. I call these places fast-food katsu. They are all over Japan. Not as fancy as high-end katsu restaurants, where the pigs have been massaged daily before becoming tonkatsu, but satisfying comfort-food versions. To this end, this place delivers flawlessly. I was looking for a quick bite and decided to try this spot on a whim while I was shopping at the new Mitsuwa. Tokyo Shokudo's menu is pretty vast and includes a wide range of Japanese comfort foods. From rice bowls to udons and sobas, they've got it all! I went with their Pork Katsu Curry Udon. It wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't terrible. The katsu filet had a nice crisp to it and the curry udon was comforting. It didn't particularly wow me as I've had better elsewhere, but it was perfectly fine. A small note is that I think the bowl was a bit too small for what it was. I found myself really trying to dig deep to reach the noodles. By the time I got to them, it felt like a lot of the curry had already got soaken up. I think as an udon dish, its components could've been more well rounded. read more

I went on a Wednesday morning (Jan 28) when it opened. I gave it three stars because the guy who was helping my mom and I was so kind and helpful. Now onto the food. I ordered a Pork Katsu plate. It came with a side of rice, seaweed salad, potato salad (I believe), and miso soup. I love how it came with all these extra side dishes, but the katsu itself was a little dry. The crunch on it was decent, but the inside of the meat was a little dry. I still ate the katsu because I was hungry, haha. Now onto the udon soup. The udon soup that my mom ordered was a little oily, and she could not finish it. The side dishes that came with my pork katsu order were great,t but in my opinion, the katsu was just slightly dry. Tokyo Shokudo is located inside the new Mitsuwa Marketplace. It is one of the three food vendors currently open (a fourth vendor is coming soon). I chose this one to try out for the first time. There is a Katsu/Curry vendor in the Torrance Mitsuwa that I love and was expecting the same quality but very disappointed! I should have read the reviews first! Service was okay and they have a nice system with pagers. There were very few of us ordering (around 1030am on a weekday) so it didn't take very long for my order. I ordered two plates to go. Pork Katsu with Spicy Curry and Chicken Karaage. The Katsu was very good but the spicy curry had no kick to it (and they changed an extra $1 for spicy). Not sure if they mixed up and gave me regular vs spicy? Bland and disappointing! In addition, I had to explain to the staff at the order counter that I wanted the Curry on the side (it was a to go order). Then the staff kindly explained that it comes on the plate. I told her I did not want the Katsu to get soggy. I asked the same of the Karrage Chicken plate and this time she didn't question it. Seems to me for a to go order vs dine in that woukd be the expectation. The Karrage Chicken was almost inedible. Nothing crispy about it and defithe worse I have had. You can see in the photos, it looks anemic. Texture was more like flour. I can only guess they floured and forgot to coat (Panko breading) before frying. I definitely do not recommend Tokyo Shokudo. There are a lot of great Curry places in the area. In addition, their prices are way too high with low quality! I won't be back! read more

The eel egg unatama was very good. Just enough for one meal, I had been hoping to maybe make two servings out of it. Good flavor and texture. A little pricey for a single take-out meal so I wouldn't get it often, but as an occasional treat it's nice. read more

I love fish so when I saw this on the menu, I had to order it. $19 and I was disappointed It's located inside the marketplace and during lunch. It's incredibly busy. The fish itself was very fresh and tasty. No Ponzi sauce dipping like usually it has with any mackerel piece and the miso soup taste better made by my 10-year-old nephew. I found curry and cutlet udon restaurant inside Mitsuwa marketplace Cypress. Today is the grand opening day here. So many people ordered, waiting, and waiting....at the food court. I know this is the chain restaurant. Wondering if the cutlet, udon is that great or not. I ordered pork cutlet curry w medium spiciness and Nikutama udon w beef, eggs. First, I have to tell about the cutlet size. So mini, only 4 pieces. My hubby can't share the cutlet w me. That small portion when we got the cutlet. Curry sauce was good, rice is well cooked. I was dissapointed about the portion, paid $16.50. My nikutama udon was 5 stars. The broth is rich, flavorful, noodles are so chewy, and beef is so tender. That is exactly udon I want to eat all the time. The service time is way too long. I tried to understand due to the grand opening but still way too long over 30 mins to wait and pick up the foods after we odered. We checked twice if our order were ready to pick up. One more critical thing, too many flies are inside food court, everywhere, entrance. especially in the kitchen area as well as the menu display. I saw one fly got stuck in the display. I was so tired so I didn't say anything. I just picked up the foods, eat, and wanted to leave as soon as I finished my foods. I ordered the chicken teryaki at a place known for curry so this may have not been my best choice from the menu. However, this plate was not good. A few pieces of the chicken were red and veiny. The best part was the rice. Surprisingly one of the best tasting sides of white rice Ive EVER had. Also, the price point was under. $18+ for a plate in Cypress is more that what I expected. My coworkers and I lined up at Tokyo Shokudo on Day 4 of the shops at Mitsuwa Cypress operating. We got there early on a Tuesday around 11:30. The line was not long but the wait to the cashier felt long. The menu is extensive and a bit expensive compared to stalls at Mitsuwa Costa Mesa (think Miyabi-tei or Don Don Tei). We got a beeper and as soon as we sat down, we realized the seating area at the food court was filled with flies. Seems like the store doesn't have any fly management. The kitchen and serving window at this stall is also not spared from the wrath of the flies. It's mildly disgusting. Food came out within 15 mins and it was just ok. I liked my curry but the portion and taste of the cutlet was unimpressive. I would probably come back but not during lunch hour. Overall it was not a great experience. Please get a handle on your flies situation. I surmised the surrounding parking lot full of trees that somehow attract flies as I saw them outside as well on a relatively cool November afternoon. The food was good; it wasn't bad. Plain, which is fine. Disappointing to get the bowl I did (see photo) compared to the display bowl. The little side of potato salad was three small chunks of potato. However, food quality is a bit different, this should be consistent and ready. If you are looking for delicious and big portioned fast food Curry, go to Miyabi Tei in Costa Mesa location or Irvine. This is a different chain even though it looks the parts. The curry itself was very small, a bit dry and lacking some taste compare to other curry food court.
