I'm new to Portland, and I needed to find a practitioner to help my back and hips. I had an accident about ten years ago, and had to spend about eight of those years with trial-and-error medical care. I've experienced the gamut of traditional and non-traditional therapies from West to East, and back again. I've had good and bad experiences. I had been doing very well with a non-force chiropractor and medical massage/muscle balancing in another city, and wanted to find something in the same realm.
Based on reviews and the information OCM's/Ariana's website, I booked an appointment and came in for consultation and treatment. I was optimistic that her philosophy was in alignment with what has been working for me, so it was worth the 30 minute drive to her office and a price similar to what I paid in LA... Unfortunately, I left disappointed. I felt that her technique was mediocre at best, and I left in exactly the same state as I came in. No, maybe my wallet was a little lighter, but that was it.
The office was a little difficult to find, tucked away in the attic of a residential building-turned-commercial. There weren't any signs directing me where to go, so I sort of picked my way up the stairs and stumbled into the right place by chance. The building is definitely not ADA-compliant, so if you are not able to take the stairs, you will not be able to get to Ariana's office. The building was musty smelling and it was way too hot up there. I'm sure in other seasons it's fine, but it was HOT in August.
Ariana's assessment was blah. She took a brief medical history and listened to my chief complaints, looked at the bottom of my shoes for uneven wear, and told me nothing new. When a patient comes with a long-term, chronic injury, s/he most likely has a good understanding of the underlying problems. I felt a little patronized and a little concerned that she didn't have a very deep understanding of my issue. I felt that it was cutting into our treatment time, as well. I was happy to get on the table and get started.
She started on my abdomen, pressing a lot on my belly to "unlock" some of the tight spots on my diaphragm. She kept telling me how this was really healing. I kept waiting for something magical, for days, but nothing happened from getting my flabby gut poked at. I felt that she wasn't even really getting to whatever spots she was looking for. She kept asking me, "Oh, that's tender, isn't it," but it wasn't (and I told her so, but ???).
Turning over, I was hoping that things would pick up a bit. She worked on my hips a bit and even found a tight spot or two. But again, she didn't find exactly the right area. I kept trying to lead her to the right spots, but she just didn't bring it on. She didn't really touch my back at all. At this point, I was ready to just be done. I was hot (she kept asking me about the temp, but it's summer and you work in an unairconditioned attic - the fan was already on, what more can be done?). I was uninspired by her treatment. I was not even really confident that she could really help me. I am sure she is a soft-spoken and gentle person, but it came across to me as unconfident and a little limp. She didn't really have any big picture assessment of where I was at, or what we should do. She just kept saying, "There's a lot of work we could do here." But *what*?? That was never shared with me.
When she said she was done, I said that the rotation in my spine was just as bad as when I came in, and I was still hurting pretty bad. She left the room, instructed me to get off the table and walk around a bit. When she came back in, I confirmed that I was still badly rotated. She pressed and poked a bit on my hip, and left again for me to walk around. I was no better. Having had two years of stellar therapy in another city, I know that she should've worked on certain areas of my back, and not my hips, to help the rotation. But whatever. I was done letting her give it a try. She seemed like she was out of tricks at this point, too. I said thank you and we were done.
I even wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she needed two appointments to set some sort of treatment plan in motion and for me to see progress. But her latest appointment of the day was around 3pm. Not exactly convenient. I don't really know how one builds a practice, working only through mid-afternoon and no weekends. It certainly didn't convey to me a dedicated professional that wants to help a new client. She later emailed me to follow up, asking if I'd like to bring my kids along to the appointment. Didn't ask how I was feeling since her treatment, or anything.
I've had more healing massages from a regular LMT at a spa, at a better price, and a more luxe environment. But I wasn't looking for a frou-frou massage. I was looking for a dynamic professional to actually treat me. She seems like a nice person, but she totally didn't click with me read more
