I'm giving Oregon Trail/ AJ Martino a 5-star review because they earned it. Read further and you'll see why. Looking for and deciding on a contractor can be scary and stressful. You hear the horror stories and the reputation of the industry. We were part of that group and we were hesitant to use any contractors. We actually started this project off using independent referrals. Our project was a total gut. We were going to take everything down to the studs. We had met with a handful of contractors and Oregon Trail was the one we liked the most. They were the most down to earth and based on first impressions they seemed to honestly believe in the quality of work and bringing to life the image of what the homeowners want. But of course....us being naive we felt we could do this without a contractor. We were wrong. The first independent guy (who was a licensed contractor and specialized in framing) we hired did the demo and attempted to do the framing and it went horribly wrong. He was short cutting everywhere possible. An example...he was cutting wood from other parts of the house to use for framing in other parts of the house. I'm not joking. An absolute nightmare. We parted ways. At that point we knew we had to do this right. But we were still apprehensive about who to use though. I have friends in the industry and they would always tell me...you will hate your contractor by the end of the project. So this is what was stuck in my head. But we knew we had to hire one. My wife and I thought long and hard about it and we decided to go with our original gut feeling and we decided to go with Oregon Trail. We made the right decision. Jeremy Parsons (one of the partners) welcomed us into his home to look at his concrete floors and skylights since we were looking to do the same at our home. How many contractors would do that? AJ Martino was our project manager and I have to give him kudos for his patience, expertise, perseverance and his advocacy for his customers. Our project had several bumps in it, including an HVAC disagreement with our HOA that held the project up for over 3 months. But A.J didn't walk off the project. He stood by us until the situation was resolved and until the completion of the project. My wife will tell you that I'm a bit on the OCD side and I look at every corner and I want perfection. A.J worked with us and was extremely patient and made sure everything was handled to our level of satisfaction. He advocated for us and we did feel like he was on our side. We wanted to do a partial remodel of our house, which included a complete master bedroom remodel, staircase painted with new balusters, a fireplace makeover and new flooring for the entire upstairs. I called several contractors, and it was very difficult to make an appointment with them. A couple were no shows on appointments that were scheduled. One contractor kept our appointment but never gave me a bid. I was discouraged and expecting a nightmare if I ever did get a contractor to actually do the work. Luckily, I found Oregon Trail. A neighbor was having some interior work done and I went over to ask them about the contractor they were using. My neighbor's remodel was not complete, but the work being done looked of very high quality and looked great. My neighbor was extremely pleased with the work that had been done. My neighbor gave me the number for Oregon Trail. I came home and called immediately and AJ Martino picked right up. We talked for a few minutes and set up a date for him to come by. AJ told me Oregon Trail does not advertise because they do not need to, all their business is "word of mouth." That says a lot to me. At our first meeting, AJ was right on time. Soon after this meeting with AJ, the work began. I cannot say enough about our positive experience working with AJ and his crews during our remodel. AJ is professional, experienced and knows what he is doing. I was always kept updated on what was being done and the time schedule for completion. AJ is a master at scheduling his crews and they were always at, or before, their estimated completion dates. There was very little down time in between jobs, the coordination between jobs was impeccable. If any changes were made, I was always informed ahead of time. AJ's crews were always on time, or early, and they are all exceptional craftsmen. They just pay attention to all the details, large and small, making sure the end result meets the customer's expectations. The crews were also very meticulous at making sure everything was cleaned up at the end of the day. One thing I really appreciated was once a job was complete, they would always ask me if I was pleased with the end result. We have additional work planned with Oregon Trail on our home. I feel fortunate that we were able to work with AJ and his crews and look forward to working with all of them again on these future projects. A remodel definitely has its challenges, but working with professionals that take pride in their work, are craftsmen, and are completely dependable, sure makes the process easier, almost enjoyable. We hired Oregon Trail after reading Yelp reviews and getting competitive quotes. Project: remodel of master bathroom and closet Summary: Competitive pricing, but prepare for delays Our contractor was Kornel. Most reviews talk about Marc. While Kornel is newer to being a contractor, he has a positive attitude. We did have to do more project management than we expected. Such as making a final checklist, asking about timeline. (I assumed Oregon trail would do that.) We work from home, so it was very important for us to know what was happening when and who would be in our home each day. Some of the subcontractors were difficult to work with. For example, the plumber continued to find issues with parts, the work of the other subcontractors, etc. Plus he was really difficult to schedule, which delayed the project. The demo subcontractor was also difficult. Kornel mentioned they won't be working with them again. They ended up damaging and throwing away fixtures that were supposed to stay. To Kornel's credit, he replaced or fixed anything that had been damaged by the subcontractor. We now have a bathroom and closet we love. Their initial estimate of time was 8-10 weeks; actual was 14 weeks. We did a flat fee with them so we stayed on budget regardless. My husband and I undertook our first large remodel project by completely gutting our kitchen and family room, trenching in water and gas, and removing a load baring wall between our kitchen and dinning room. It was quite a project! We interviewed a number of companies for the project, including several through personal reference, but I was most impressed with Oregon Trail Remodeling and project manager Michael Celis. From the beginning Michael was incredibly flexible (we wanted to pre-plan the project 6+ months before starting work due to some scheduling issues in our lives), very communicative (always available via text, email and phone), and really helpful guiding us towards a design that would best meet our family's needs. Throughout the project Michael was on top of everything - he kept things on schedule (even with a few unexpected items that came up), quickly rearranged teams if need be (we have two little kids and both had to stay home from daycare with colds a few times), and I was overall impressed with the level of detail and quality they strove for. Several times Michael had teams come back to fix things I never would have even noticed, and there were a number of little extra details they added which made everything look even better in the end. I also loved that we could custom design and build all the cabinetry with their in-house cabinet maker! We did have two issues at the end of the project with how things had been installed, but Michael and his team immediately took ownership and worked quickly to fix them both. Scheduling went quite well, the project has finished on time. My direct contact person on a daily basis was Michael Celis, who was easy to work with and always calm, cool and collected. Pricing has been fair, remodeling is never inexpensive but Jeremy was very conscientious of the project's budget and we stayed within the parameters. My husband and I worked with Jeremy at Oregon Trail Remodeling on our home addition and remodel. It was apparent from the very start that we were going to have a wonderful experience and working relationship, and everything surpassed our expectations, including the beautiful finished product, and project timeline. Our project included adding 50% to the footprint of our existing home, a full kitchen and master bathroom remodel, and new flooring/paint/baseboards throughout the house. Jeremy's attention to every detail, coupled with his eye for making every finished stage the best it could possibly be drove the success of the project. Throughout the project, we were in constant contact with Jeremy, he always made himself available to answer questions, and always included us when decisions needed to be made. We appreciated being included in meetings with the subcontractors, a few standouts are the cabinet master, Angel, and the tile expert Carlos since our project included custom tile work in the kitchen, master bathroom and fireplace surround and the custom cabinetry included built-in's in the living room, a window seat with abundant storage, and a custom fireplace mantle - however, ALL of the subcontractors Jeremy picked are true experts in their respective fields, and they all shared the same attention to detail, every step of the way, and everyone added to a house that now receives compliments from everyone who passes by. The new addition molds perfectly into the existing structure, and looks like a completely new house. Oregon Trail Remodeling negotiated with us over a period of 30 days to remodel our kitchen and our family room entertainment wall. They won us over knocking out two other contractors and a kitchen designer. This company builds their own cabinetry boxes and orders doors to fit. Finishing is done on site. The process takes you out of your kitchen at least 3 weeks longer, but it is more flexible in design. In spite of their claims, they are not cheaper. The week of Feb 3rd their representative, Kornel George told us they would start on Monday Feb 10. Before start we requested the contract be completed and include the discussed schedule (12 weeks) and the discussed progress payment plan. We asked that a scope of work we prepared be attached with their pricing proposal to be sure we were all on the same page. Because the Company's license, bond and liability insurance are held by the two owners, Mark and Jeremy, we asked that one of them sign the contract. Because Oregon Trail uses sub contractors including their project manager, Kornel George, we asked that they include a statement that Oregon Trail Remodeling or their subcontractors would be responsible for any Workman's Compensation claims. These are basic contract terms for residential work - nothing extraordinary but missing in the contract draft we were given up front. Kornel emailed us at 11:50 on Friday Feb 7th pulling out of the job. That's 5 business HOURS before scheduled start. In a subsequent phone conversation he told us a) Mark and Jeremy (owners) did not want to make these additions to the contract and considered us problematic or too hard to work with and b) Kornel (subcontractor) had just received permits on a larger commercial job and no longer had time to work with us. They left us with no source for cabinetry, no contractor, all our appliances on order, and a cleaned out kitchen in anticipation of a Monday morning demo. We have to start all over looking for an available quality contractor and source for cabinetry. If you are looking for an ethical company with good business practices, Oregon Trail Remodeling just demonstrated that they are NOT one you should consider. read more
