The veggie lo mein and chow fun were mostly noodles with a few pieces of broccoli. The General Tso lunch came with fried rice that was a pitiful excuse of fried rice- just rice with some soy sauce and nothing else. No onions, peas, carrots, corn- literally browned rice. The egg rolls were so doughy inside, I cut it open and threw them out because they were inedible. The only saving grace was the broccoli and beef. Last Wednesday we ordered Shrimp Lo Mien for carry out . Having dined there before in the restaurant I was confident our food would be good . To my surprise after opening my food I could barely find any shrimp . Upon close inspection, I realized it was because my food contained POPCORN SHRIMP . When l ordered the same thing while dining in, it was NEVER served with POPCORN SHRIMP . I couldn't even enjoy my overpriced food . I ate a small portion of it . I often order takeout from here, but I've had a few dine-in experiences as well. My usual order is the chicken w/ szechuan pepper, szechuan cold noodles, and green beans. It always satisfies and gives me enough food for ~4 meals. Nothing is crazy spicy but has a good dose of the numbing szechuan spice you should expect. The waitstaff here is friendly, especially if you come with a regular. They have rotating tables upstairs for family-style dining if you have a larger group. The food is consistent and tasty. The portion size here is much larger and cheaper compared to other szechuan spots in the area, but the quality is about on par with the others. We're in Mt Vernon every day these days, and thought we would explore restaurants that we wouldn't normally drive into the city to experience. We're looking for an Indian place for butter chicken, and a Chinese spot with quality egg rolls and shrimp toast. I was perusing yelp and was drawn to the Orient Express because they have double cooked pork - which is one of Jeremy's all-time favorite Szechuan dishes. I was disappointed that none of my favorites were on the menu. No crispy beef or mongolian beef. No shrimp toast. I was excited to see several duck choices, but were quickly told they didn't have duck. So I settled on Fragrant Ribs. They were WAY saucier than I expected - as in they come in a bowl filled with sauce and you have to fish the bits of ribs out of it. And I did not like the taste of the broth at first. I added duck sauce and sweetened black vinegar. The ribs have a lot of bone and cartilage, but they are quite tender. I still wouldn't order it again. Jeremy was THRILLED with the double cooked pork, though. It's on par with Szechuan 12 in Timonium. The egg rolls are crispy and delicious. We also got lamb with cumin, which is pretty tasty. However, none of it really hit the spot with me. And Jeremy didn't finish any of it, which is rare for him. Usually, if he likes something, he doesn't come up for air. He eats until there isn't any left. Maybe we weren't actually in the mood for Chinese? I didn't know that was even possible! Maybe I should have stuck to the American Chinese section? I'm usually an adventurous eater. To be completely honest, it is quite possible that I was just not feeling it, but this also means that I am going to continue my search for a More-than-just-American-Chinese spot that blows my mind. Oh my gosh! When I stepped into Orient Express it looked familiar. Then, I realized they had the same menu and vibe as my favorite Sichuan restaurant in Towson. I came with a few friends, and we got a few items to share, including fuqi feipian, beef sirloin noodle soup, double-cooked fish fillets, and stir-fried green beans. Now I should have known what was what now that I noticed I last reviewed this place a DECADE AGO. Awful then. Still Awful now. I simply forgot... that's my fault. I then tell her I'm ready and I placed my order for Chicken Lo Mein. She then quote me a price. That's almost $5 MORE than what I just saw on the menu RIGHT IN FROMT OF ME... that she saw me looking thru [GETTING ANNOYED... 1st red flag]. I tell her there's been a mistake. She tells me I'm looking at the wrong menu [WHAAAAAT?!? 2nd red flag]. They updated their pricing and I need to look at the Carryout menus. How in the world was I supposed to know that? I'm annoyed but I also really have the taste for chicken lo mein on my brain and on my taste buds so I go ahead and place the order. 'Oooooooo, this is gonna be so good' (or so I thought). I run some errands in the neighborhood and stop back in to pick up the order. Done. I get home take the container out of the bag, open the container, and I see NOTHING but noodles. I absolutely loved this place! The restaurant seems small but has an upstairs too. We stayed downstairs and there was a few tables open. The carry out business here was incredible on a Tuesday night. We got the vegetable dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, and Eggplant in garlic sauce. Everything was fresh, delicious, and flavorful. I couldn't find anything wrong with this place. Solid Sichuan place. Super nice owner. Came here recently at the advice of another. It's in deep Baltimore, so if you're coming from the burbs, its a bit of a drive through some savory landscape to get here, but I think some of the dishes are worth it. The owner was truly nice and talked with me during my meal. His chefs are from Sichuan and he did his best to tell them I wanted mala. Got a little bit of la, but like everywhere else, lacked the ma. I came in knowing what I wanted, but I would suggest looking at the menu online before walking in. The paper copy has words cut off compared to the online ordering list. I started off with two in-house dishes and took the rest to go. First up was the Szechuan dry-pot, chicken. The second was the Szechuan Mao Cai. The drypot was really good. Good flavor, lots of peppercorn, but no real numbing. The Mao Cai is a dish for two. Had a lot of tripe, cauliflower, and other interesting things in it. The chili oil was sort of buttery to me. I'm not sure if that is authentic or not. I did really like the tofu squares. As for the other dishes, I got: 117 Chicken with Sichuan Pepper 119 Double Cooked Pork 139 Mapo Tofu 148 Minced Pickled Green Beans with Pork 171 Fish Fillets in Cumin Chili Sauce Out of the above, the fish fillets were my favorite, followed by the double cooked pork. The pickled dish was something new for me and was interesting, but not necessarily my jam going forward. All in all, I would come back. Wish it was closer. All these dishes are spiced perfectly, and every bite returns me to my childhood. The restaurant also serves American Chinese food (e.g. the menu items on their lunch special). They have an "American Chinese" section of the menu, but they also have a ton of Sichuan dishes as well. I really love Sichuan cuisine (sour, spicy, bitter, aromatic...yum!), so I did a bit of both. I went with an American Chinese classic that I cannot resist (fried crab and cheese wonton), one of my favorite Chinese vegetable dishes (stir-fried green beans), and a Sichuan dish (lamb with cumin)! Everything was delicious, so I'm so excited to try it again (takeout, delivery, or dine in)! They serve both authentic and Americanized Chinese food, so there is something for everyone. We got a beef noodle soup, deep fried pork intestines with red hot peppers, and bok choy with mushrooms. Everything was delicious and fresh! I liked that the beef is braised tender to perfection, and the broth is flavorful and the noodles tasted home made, had the perfect bite. Then the Pork Belly in Garlic sauce is also great, but too much to finish as the only dish as it got oily and too garlicy. Then, the Pickled Vegetables and Minced Pork is sour and pungent. The last is Spicy and Sour Rice Noodle with Intestine! It's definitely one of the most signature and difficult dish to love. But it's more like a appetizer instead of a soup as they should be. I've always lamented the lack of authentic Asian food in Baltimore. However, after almost 4 years in the city, I recently discovered that Orient Express actually offers authentic Chinese cuisine! It's certainly not the best I've ever had, but it comes close to taking that title for Baltimore City. To be fair, I haven't sampled a large portion of their menu, but have ordered their tofu pudding fish filet twice (very similar to Sichuan boiled fish in hot oil, just with tofu). Although too salty on both occasions, it was quite delicious and certainly packed some heat with the mala peppers. Authentic Chinese food is rare in Baltimore (previously my go to place was Chopstix) but after a recommendation from a friend, we have discovered this place. Classic Chinese place in terms of service: depending on time, sometimes there are servers but otherwise you order at the register then sit; self serve hot or cold water. But the food!! Excellent Szechuan and other kinds of Chinese dishes! My favorites so far are the beef noodle soup, the fried fragrant ribs, eggplant, and sour cabbage fish soup (sounds weird but so good). Just the right amount of heat and spice. And they are great about food allergies--came with a friend with an anaphylactic allergy to shellfish but the waitress was great about asking the kitchen to make sure there was no contamination. read more

This place can be stellar! Yes - like all Chinese restaurants take out can be challenging and a little hit or miss. However, if you are a gourmand looking for a great restaurant at times this can be that. Think of chinese when you found dried lily buds in the hot sour, and when the hot and sour actually had a sour component - a slight vinegar twang or an old school restaurant where they take the time to destring the snow peas and the string beans marinate the meats - lots of great small touches. Like not over cooking the vegetables and service with a smile and recommendations. They used to have a hidden szchewan menu but I think when they redid the entire interior (think charcoal and reclaimed woods) they spruced up the in the house menus to include everything. And if one of your criteria is seeing Asians eat at the Asian restaurant you will see that here - always! Who knew lots of chile pepper hot pots and scrambled eggs with tomatoes along with sautéed bok chou, gai lan, and garlicky pea shoots on all the tables. Tip - almost all chinese restaurants I know of Sun & Mon aren't the A team chefs but I can promise you Tuesday - Saturdays are.
