Recently ordered for first time. Had the general Tao chix and it was excellent. Wonton is fantastic. Two days later ordered again and got the house fried rice which was phenomenal. A few negatives, portions are small. When I get the general Taos at my other place I always get two meals out of it. Not here. Also only 5-6 wontons in a quart. Don't understand all the negative reviews but I like it here. It's old school Chinese cooking which is getting harder and harder to come by these days with all the younger generation run buffets and modern Chinese places popping up which I find to be bland and tasteless. I love their shrimp with lobster sauce here as a suggestion also the beef and broccoli was very flavor full! Egg Rolls appear to be homemade from scratch! The prices are cheap to very reasonable. Service has always been OK, no complaints. Atmosphere is so so, could use a face lift, but for the money, and the food quality, your best bet in the Cape for a good old fashioned Chinese restaurant meal! read more

I would have given 5 stars but then you all would think I am related in some way to the business...I am not...I am just a Chinese food lover that appreciates the unique flavors and textures of this cuisine. You will NEVER get the quality, flavors and freshness of Chinese food at a buffet. It;s a shame most Americans look for quantity over quality. Many eat at buffets for the fast instant gratification...try the Orient takeout instead. It usually never takes more than ten or fifteen minutes for my order to be ready and that is FAST for quality. I have been enjoying the food at the Orient for over twenty five years. The chef is "old schooled" which is what makes the food here better than everywhere else. Their Pork is BBQ'd the way Chinese pork should be as is evident in many of their dishes which include pork. Their Pork fried rice is the benchmark while their Pork Lo Mein is also a ten.Their batter is crispy and their sauces are right on the mark. Their fare is primarily Cantonese/mandarin but over the years I have noticed a a few Szechuan/Hunan dishes. I have only recently introduced my self to the owner because I wanted him to know how much I appreciated him for cooking for my family for so many years. Now I live in Cape Coral for five months of the year but you can bet I visit the Orient at least once a week for take out since my kids are grown and on their own. My favorite takeout lately? I ordered dinner from this restaurant through Bite Squad. I took the restaurant almost an hour and a half just to prepare the food. Which means it took two hours to arrive at my house. It was nice and hot when it got here so I was happy about that. But the food was awful. My son got the veggie lo mein and I got the pepper steak with onion. The food looked good but it all had a weird fish like flavor. Not pleasant and kind of down right yucky. It was like their sauces have no flavor and the food was cooked in either a dirty wok or used oil and all of the flavors from all of the other meals they'd cooked that evening seeped into flavor my food with just a bad taste. We have been trying to find decent Chinese food in Cape Coral. Having moved from the Northeast, we knew it would be challenging and we were surprised and impressed with the "O". First of all it looks dark from the outside, but it's very bright inside. No dark lighting or bar here. The 1 waitress was pleasant and fast. They don't serve full liquor, just beer & wine, so we ordered beers and they were really cold and we even got frosted mugs! We love our hot & sour soup and while the ingredients were different from what we're used to, the flavor was perfect. We would definitely order it again (or to go). We tried the dumplings, and they were okay but not great. The real gem was the entree. Kung Pao chicken had nice fresh vegetables and was very tasty. We had the pork fried rice with it as well. All very good and we will definitely be back to try other dishes. We did have the egg roll and while good, it's not what we are used to. We know it's hard to find egg roll made with celery, so even though it was cabbage, it was actually pretty good. read more

Wednesday lunch I thought I'd try here for the first time. At 11:40 am the place was really slow with many empty tables. Service was prompt and friendly and everything came out piping hot and orders were correct. The lunch special menu had a lot of choices and I opted to try the shrimp chow mein for only $6.99 which included an egg roll. Two of us made it out of there with a couple iced teas for less than $20 which was a shock. The food was good and enjoyable with many medium sized shrimp on my plate. Everything tasted well and my ice tea was refilled again and again. The restaurant has a great selection of bottled and canned drinks plus I noticed they got Budweiser Light on draft. The regular menu has a ton of items but I can tell you what I tried this first visit was good. The A/C was pumping nice and cold too. Only thing taking away another star from my review is the restaurant is old, tired, and run down in desperate need of renovation inside and out. Food and service was great. read more

This is the first time I have eaten at The Orient, and it will certainly be the last. The sweet and sour pork was burnt so bad that it resembled little charcoal briquettes, the rice was hard and seemed old. The Egg Foo Young was cooked properly, however, the gravy was liquid salt... upon contacting the manager to ask for a refund, he became very defensive and rude. He went on and on about how many people have eaten the same gravy and had not complained, then he said I didn't have to use the gravy at all.... To me, the paying customer, the whole point of ordering Egg Foo Young is the gravy. He was not nice. When I asked for a refund, he refused saying that his food was completely fine, then he agreed only if I brought it back to him. I agreed, since I wasn't going to eat it, he then promptly took the refund offer of the table and said he would only cook a new order. .. I then refused and ate popcorn for dinner. .. Not sure how this restaurant has stayed in business for so long, the manager certainly does not specialize in customer service, and if he is also the chef, it doesn't seem like he specializes in culinary arts either. read more

Forgivable again, due to the current lock down conditions. Websites are not always updated. Portions were small, but tasty after being reheated. Hot and sour was set aside until today - I reheated it, and it was quite good - until I bit into a cigarette butt. YES - a cigarette butt! I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the owner, as a courtesy, before I posted this scathing review. He scoffed at me, said that he didn't have time to speak to me, and told his staff to give me a credit. I have 15 years of restaurant experience under my belt and have never been treated so badly. Make no mistake - I will not ever set foot again, nor recommend this place to anyone. Ever. Take your credit, and use it to train your frustrated staff to follow health code. The shrimp in the HFR smelled and tasted very fishy like they'd been sitting around for a long time. The wings that came in the poo poo platter were soooo salty. The dumplings had no flavor. The fillings for both the spring and egg roles were, again, a mushy mess. Looked like chicken strips used in the General's chicken dish. Besides, Restaurant reviews that get 5 stars are usually written by the owners, friends or employees, while one star reviews are usually written by their competitors or disgruntled ex employees... or reallllllllly pissed off diners who never gave the owner or mgr a chance to fix an issue, or the owners refused to help said dining guests. The Orient is the only Authentic Oriental Chinese restaurant left in all of Lee County- perhaps all of America! Americans have no idea what authentic Canton/Mandarin/Sechusan/ flavors are nor what old world authentic Chinese food is, thanks to those crappy buffets & take out strip mall so-called Chinese joints ... they have altered true Chinese recipes to the lowest level a human should never eat! The owner of The Orient sticks to all classical recipes - all from scratch!
