I drove past it the first time, but the exterior is intriguing, with waterfalls and small ponds with koi fish out front that caught my attention on the second pass. The interior is large and classically decorated, the kind of dining room that was built to handle volume without feeling like a cafeteria. I noticed the koi fish out front have a quarter machine nearby that dispenses food, a small detail that tends to land well if you are visiting with kids. The overall setup is comfortable and well maintained, and the space gave the restaurant a presence that most Chinese restaurants in the area do not match. The dim sum is the main draw, and it is served until 3pm, so timing my visit accordingly was important. I ordered the har gow and shumai, both well executed and holding up against what I have found at comparable restaurants in Boston or New York. The chili oil is good and worth using liberally. The shrimp wonton noodle soup was a standout and worth ordering on its own. For those coming outside dim sum hours, the full menu covers a solid range of Cantonese dishes. I also tried the fried rice, salt and pepper squid, and chow fun, all of which performed well. The portions throughout were generous enough that ordering with a group and sharing made the most sense. I'm shocked at how wonderful this restaurant is. My fam made me detour all the way here from NYC to Rhode Island. It makes sense now. What an amazing canto spot and what's even better is that it's 8 mins away from Mohegan sun. There was no host for a while when we entered, we were kind of lost without any guidance. We helped ourselves and just walked straight to the back and a waiter finally spotted us and sat us down. We came on a Monday so sadly because the sushi chef was not in, there was no sushi for the day. Everything we ordered was yum and the price was good too. I love having dim sum here! Service is great and food is so delicious. Loveeeeeee their chicken feet in black bean sauce. Tripe with scallions and ginger. Came with my family for New Year's and it was quite splendid apart from some minor points which I will go into. Service was attentive despite the busy atmosphere from it being the holidays. Our waiter was very blunt with our questions and at one point he stopped us from ordering more because we were unsure if what we had would be enough, LOL! Tasted like a lobster with simple seasoning, the taste didn't live up to the price. The salt and pepper soft shell crab was probably the best dish. It was very crispy without it being drenched in oil; super light. Very umami and seasoned to perfection. You have to order it. Steamed flounder was tender and the meat was milky. Like the crab, super light and fresh. Also did not have a pungent fishy flavor or smell and was marinated in a simple soy-based sauce that wasn't overly salty. Peking duck was normal, a bit too greasy for me. The baos were so good though, they were fluffy and warm and I could've eaten the baos by themselves and called it a day. Fried pig intestine were good as well; they were not chewy like some other restaurants make them (which is a good thing imo). House fried rice was very garlicky and delicious. Finally, Chinese broccoli was amazing and cooked to perfection down to the second. Had a crunch when you bit into it but still soft, it was amazing. For 8 people the bill came out to $300 including tip, which is not bad at all! Very family-friendly restaurant with great portion sizes and great staff. Was in town visiting some family and stopped in here for some dim sum. They don't do the push carts like some other dim sum restaurants. They just give you a sheet and you fill it in. I photos on the menu. Most likely it'll be easier if you frequent at dim sum restaurants. Service wasn't bad--not the friendliest folks but doable. Food wasn't bad. One of my favorite dim sum items is chicken feet. Unfortunately flavor was a bit lackluster. It was a bit too soggy and flavor was a bit on the blander side. Edible though. I didn't expect soup dumplings there and they had it--they weren't bad. Enjoyable I thought. Beef lo mein was okay--beef was moist. Shui mai and har gow wasn't bad. Very moist and didn't break apart. Been here several times now and I think it deserves a solid 3.5 stars. We came here when they first opened years ago for dinner and thought the food was subpar. Since then, we've been here a few times for dim sum as well as dinner and haven't had a bad experience yet. The dim sum is better than the regular dinner but we have enjoyed both. (Fu Xing is the Cantonese Chinese name for this restaurant) When everyone's back in Connecticut from wherever they went, my family goes here for dinner. Christmas? Home from college? Parents meeting for the first time? We do it all through an Oriental Bar & Grill dinner. My parents even deemed this the location of my Chinese wedding (June 2022) because they offer quality traditional Chinese Cantonese dishes. This is the place. Heads up I'm going Cantonese for naming these dishes because my sister and I didn't earn the badge of ordering in our native tongue for nothing! First, let's talk about Dim Sum. Between here and down the street, you can't go wrong with Dim Sum here. Personal favorites are the siu mai (shrimp and pork dumplings), gan chow ngow hau (dry stir fry beef flat noodle), low sah bao (salted duck yolk bun-better tasting than its name I promise!), and the law mei gei (sticky rice with chicken in banana leaf). I also like they have different takes on the famous cha siu bao (pork bun). We have the iconic steamed pork bun, but they also offer it baked and croissant form. Something new! The star at dim sum for my family is the soft shell crab. We may intentionally order 2-3 servings because the whole family (usually a table of 10 of us) can't get enough of it. Where Oriental Bar & Grill stands out is the dinner menu. With a few family style dishes, we feed the whole family. There was one week our family was so obsessed we ended up driving 50 min each way from Hartford 3 times in with different groups to go eat there. Yes including week days after work. Our favorites include hap toe ha (honey walnut shrimp with Japanese Mayo and broccoli), ban nam bo (clay pot with sole fish and mushroom and cabbage), and guat herng long lei (bone-in fragrant flounder). It's so nice to be able to get traditional Cantonese Chinese dishes less than an hour away from Hartford. You can even get sushi at the bar and all of it has tasted fresh and good! The dinner dishes hit Asian parent seal of approval. My parents absolutely wanted me to have the Chinese wedding banquet here, which is an honor. Oriental Bar & Grill was able to serve 100+ people. The owner and staff even helped us maximize how many people we wanted (ended up having 140-150 fit in the restaurant with 15 tables of 10). The owner was communicative and present whenever we came in person to meet and plan. They even coordinated with a local business for decorating. Went there for fathers day! It was my first father's day and after spending An amazing day with my son and dropping him off with his mother. I was taken out to dinner by my family and can I just say the food was excellent and the aroma of the fresh cooking was mouthwatering. Service was top notch and didn't bother you to much but knew when to come with water. And the inside was gorgeous and lots of chatter and noise from other guest being happy. Definitely one of the better places to go for dim sum between NYC and Boston. Like I said in my earlier review- they give you paper menus where you check off what you want. Pork and century egg congee was good. Price is just right for big groups. Serves 6-8 small rice bowls. Would like some slivered ginger in it but maybe it's something you have to ask for. So they apologized and took away the roast pork buns (I really thought they would have left it for us to keep). That little mistake worked out well for us because now the buns were hot when it came time to eat our dessert! Let me warn you. These are really runny. Really really runny. So be careful you don't have hot lava dripping on your face. It's like eating a soup dumpling. But these are so good. Literally the highlight every time. I've ordered these at other places and they don't compare to this place's. 5/5 The service was very good. They came by constantly too refill our tea and to take away empty dishes 5/5. The restaurant is very assuming and doesn't look like a dim sum place from the outside. Dim sum can be ordered via an order sheet. It's not served in the traditional way with dim sum carts being pushed around the restaurant. For the most part the dim sum is very good. It's hilarious how the 11am-3:30pm dim sum worked for me. From 11am-3:30pm you could have told me I was in China and I would have beleived you. I'm telling you the dim sum great! 3:30pm came around and I thought I was at some American Chinese Restaurant. Flip the switch and the culture is gone haha. Service was on the slower side for me, but I have to give them credit as this was as fast as they could go so that is no problem. We knowingly adjusted our expectation of service but never thought it would be that bad. We followed up patiently with the waiter after 45 min (exact time) of placing our order with him as not even a single dish showed up, he simply told us with an impatient tone and unprofessional manner that he could not find our order and implied that we did not place it, not really the same that he did not or forgot to place it. We visited this place for dim sum with family and friends on Sunday and it wasn't too busy around 11:00 am. We ordered a bunch of food. As I sat there I smelled something funky and I kept smelling all the entrées we ordered and couldn't figured out what the smell was. As my friends and family ate the lotus wrapped chicken and rice, they said it tasted weird. I took it and smelled the rice with chicken and could tell immediately that it had gone bad. It smelled sour and rotten. We let the server know and they just brought it back with no apology. Later they offered us to exchange it for another dish. Since we ordered two orders of the dish and one of my friend ate one (she just ate it thinking the dish was fermented) they initially only wanted to exchange for one dish. I told them they should exchange for the other one since it was bad as well. After the server went back to the kitchen she finally allow us to exchange for another dish. This already left a bad taste in our mouth (literally). After, we left about a 14.9% tip given that the service wasn't really good (took a long time to receive what we asked for and the incident with the lotus wrapped dish) the manager or owner (the lady with short hair) came over and asked for more tip. That was super uncalled for. She asked why we didn't give more tip. We already gave her $30 in tips. We told her the service wasn't good to which she replied that it was busy and then walked away. I was in disbelief. She admitted that the service wasn't good but still asked for more tips and walked away to end the conversation. So, I proceed to mark off what I wanted to order on the order form. And we finally get the most non personable staff member in the in the whole restaurant. I handed him the order form and inquired on a few dishes that was not on the dim sum order form. 1. Salt n pepper shrimp 2. Salt n pepper Squid 3. Beef chow fun 4. Shredded chicken chow mein I asked if they had the combo version on the salt n pepper. And replied no! Only individual full orders, so I ordered 1 shrimp and 1 squid. The shrimp looked like it was cooked properly but the squid looks nothing even close to how a salt n pepper style should. They used regular yellow batter and deep fried like a chicken finger and put some sliced jalapeños and fried garlic dressed like salt n pepper but was the worst attempt you could imagine. Pictures will be attached to show what I'm writing about. The cook that put out that nasty ass dish should have the crap kicked out of him. The rest of the $250.00 dim sum was not much better. I can honestly say that the cooks are not that good. Nothing was up to standards, and some of the worst versions I've ever had. We eat here a handful of times each year which always includes Chinese New Year and our 2nd Thanksgiving dinner when we meet up with various family members. It is really pretty inside and out. They have plenty of larger tables to accommodate bigger groups. In addition to the traditional Chinese and dim sum, there is also sushi. We generally stick to the dim sum and order many small plates so there is a good variety to choose from. The wings are my favorite. My husband loves the shrimp dumplings. Sometimes If I feel like a meal, I will order the chicken with string beans. There is something special with string beans at Chinese restaurants that you can't get anywhere else. I love that they bring a pot of green tea and it's piping hot. The service is top notch. Everyone is very nice and welcoming. You should definitely try when in the area. We knew we ordered a lot of dishes (about 10+), but we also knew we would take the dishes home to the rest of the family waiting at home. I had to self service myself to get my own to go boxes and bags, and there's no one to check up on you unless you flag them down. They just dropped off the food and left. As we paid and left the tip on the table, we were packing our boxes and a worker asked for the check and showed us the recommended tip section and asked for more. I told her I was packing my boxes and I'd do it later. Who comes back and asks for more tip when you barely serviced us? I then went on Yelp only to find that someone else had a similar experience not only a month ago. Not a shock. I grew up going to Dim Sum on the weekends in NYC's Chinatown. Oriental Bar & Grill really does it for me without driving over bridges and through tolls. I came here with my boyfriend on a Saturday morning and immediately felt the same homey vibe as Chinatown. The restaurant was filled with Dim Sum goers but luckily we did not have to wait for a small table. They do not push the carts around but there are paper menus with the full Dim Sum menu. We ordered a variety of our favorites as well as a Young Chow fried rice (a classic) for a total of ~$32 (before tip). Everything tasted authentic and we had plenty of rice to take home as leftovers. Dimsum is only until 3pm. The place can be a bit too loud. The bathroom was unkept and needs an upgrade. The soft shell crab was very good but outside of the dimsum selection. read more
