Oriental Flavor is standard quality, standard price Chinese food, which is incredibly comforting and wonderful. I have never had a bad experience picking up or eating in, and it is definitely the most reliable Chinese restaurant in Amherst. The prices are solid for Chinese food- it's not overpriced, and you get a good amount of food portioned to you. Eating in, the decor is simple but warm. There are plenty of tables, although it runs on the smaller end for restaurants in Amherst. It's usually occupied but not full, active but not loud, and friendly. The service is good. The tables are relatively clean. You do not have to wait too long to get your food. This is the perfect place for lunch. The only item I would not recommend is the egg drop soup- it has a thick consistency that I do not enjoy. Everything else is good. read more

These people had very good customer service, and a nice shop. I ordered the General Tso chicken, and it was absolutely horrible. Its obvious they cut corners. I literally could not even feel the texture of chicken, instead it was just gooey soggy bread balls, with a gross slimy center. I tried to cut open a few, and saw there was barley any visible chicken within the bread. Absolutely disgusting, will never go back. Highly suggest the new Chinese place down the street that just opened up, it is run by a very friendly woman, I forget the name but its great. Also I do not share my name because I am concerned for my own security. But to the manager who suggests I am a fake user. This is untrue and I am simply a very dissatisfied customer. The food here is amazing, from the lo mein to mapo tofu to the cold soups and dumpling, everything stands out from the usual fare in Amherst. However, the service tonight was horrible. Our waitress, her name started with a J and wears glasses was nowhere to be found, she never checked on our table, no water refills, very unprofessional. When I lived in CA, we would go to Chinatown almost every weekend for dim sum...I love the Pioneer Valley, but have been missing good dim sum and good tacos. So I am very happy to have a good dim sum place right here in Amherst! Our family has been to Oriental Flavor several times now. It is a friendly, clean place with very good food. I only give four stars, not five, because it is more expensive than most dim sum places I've been to (and I've been to quite a few), and also I miss the carts that bring out the dim sum selections as opposed to ordering off the menu...although I assume that's because they just don't have enough traffic to prepare that much in advance. So, so glad we visited this restaurant!! It was recommended to us by friends saying that it was some of the most authentic Chinese food in the area. Our household has been hosting 3 Chinese teenagers through an abroad program and decided to bring them here for a familiar experience. The waitstaff was absolutely wonderful! Our waitress kindly helped bridge the gap between what our guests wanted to order and what we would be interested in as well. Definitely a first for us having chicken feet. The food was delicious! I stopped eating Chinese food years ago because it's rarely done well these days. But this place really is excellent. They have great lunch specials and their hot and sour soup is fantastic. I ate here the first morning they opened (today) for a Chinese breakfast, which is dim sum, pancakes, and Chinese coffee (and tea). The owner is the very hospitable waiter who worked in AmChi for many years. The decor is tasteful and relaxed, the food was carefully prepared, they are not up to full speed with all items quite yet, but we ordered a variety of tasty items, which were surprisingly fulfilling as breakfast foods. Oriental Flavor was recommended to me by a trusted friend. Last night, my daughter and I tried it out. Wow!!! We had a little bit of everything and everything was yum-yum delicious. Simple things like fired scallion pancakes and the pork rib stew pot were perfectly prepared. Had lunch here for the first time since it's opening -- for the past 9 years have frequented a nearby Chinese Restaurant but am now totally converted to Oriental Flavor. The food was delicious - fresh greens that were not greasy and a great selection of vegetarian and meat options. Tried some of the dim sum and will be back to try more. This place has pretty legit dim sum, but the prices are really expensive. A lot of the dumplings/steamed items were good. The congee, however, was a big disappointment. It needs to be cooked much longer and the consistency was still too rice-like. It's at Amherst center, so location is good. There's not much else options around, so it's a good place to get a quick fix if you're craving for some dim sum. The rest of the Chinese food is alright, better than ginger garden in my opinion. I have eaten at every Chinese restaurant in as big a radius as you can throw in Western Mass, and my Chinese-American friends and I agree this is the best around. The dim sum is fresh and a-la-carte, although they don't literally bring it to you on a cart. No MSG, nothing is unnecessarily greasy, and everything is flavorful. There are a lot of asian food options in Amherst, and this one has found its niche. Dim Sum. It's seriously delicious here, and served all day. The steamed sticky rice is perfect, the crystal shrimp dumplings are succulent, the bao are on the smaller side but very full of tasty pork, Turnip Cake who knew that would be delicious?, and my favorite is the beancurd wraps (beancurd, not just for vegetarians anymore). People are right, that the dim sum is exceptional while the rest of menu is simply very tasty. Tried a stew mug over the winter. Very.... Chinese? It is described as a nutritious stew mug, and they really mean nutritious. As best I can tell it is unsalted broth with various healing herb infused. Not what I was expecting, and certainly not all the time, but it wasn't bad, and I think it might have actually made me healthier. Prices are right if you don't go overboard (average Dim Sum for two probably ranges from 20-30), and the service is fast but not rushed. Basically, if you want traditional American Chinese, this is not the place for your sticky sweet salty and enormous fix. But if you want really really great dim sum, day or night, at a reasonable price and served by incredibly attentive waitstaff, this is the place. My only suggestions for this business would be that the dim sum menu could be a little clearer about what is/is not vegetarian and to rotate some new items onto the dim sum menu more often. read more

We love this place! I think it's less Americanized than a lot of other Chinese restaurants in the area. Love the dumplings! And other dishes that might be a little bland are much more interesting here. They're not afraid to use fresh garlic (in a good way). The staff are very friendly.
