Date 6/7/22 time 3:14pm. The cashier today blonde fake hair color I can't tell if it's a he or a she (kindly saying that). I really can't tell with the mask and voice. Was really rude taking orders and the rest of the staff noticed too because they were nice to us. That cashier needs to be removed from customer service he/she is mean. She has staples on her red cap and she/he seems crazy like needs meds. I feel sorry for the other staff who are nice putting up with it. From now on I will find another chili place. Fresh out of high school, still 17 and half-living out of boxes in my small freshman residence hall room, I still remember my first Tommy's run as a Trojan: At midnight, some floor-mates banged on my door, and with our RA to guide us, we all piled into cars and made the shortish drive to Rampart and Beverly. Squished into a Ford Festiva, a girl sitting on my lap (neither of us wearing a seatbelt... if that car had seatbelts...), I can still hear the laughter and the cacophony of pointless conversation trying in earnest to drown out the stupid 90s music straining the paper cone dash speakers. Pretty sure we were all wearing flannels. I had certainly been to Tommy's before, but always during the day, and never as a college student. Eating copious quantities of chili, pickles, and onions piled high on a burger in the middle of the night is not without its consequences... but our risk was safe unto the night into which we wished it, and standing there at that small wooden counter in a dark parking lot in the middle of the night with 25 of my newest friends, it was a moment I will never forget... standing there in the semi-dark of a semi-OK neighborhood, somewhere between the innocence of childhood and the sometimes dismal awareness of being an adult. 25 years later, I'm back at 'SC finishing up a doctorate, walking the campus in a coat and tie, remembering when, as a Freshman, I used to wonder: who the heck are those 40-something dudes in coats and ties walking across campus? The ol' Freshman 15 is a tougher proposition when you're no longer a teenager; hence, I don't make the Tommy's Run damn near as often as I used to. There's only so many banana chiles a man should consume with a chili burger in his lifetime, and I'm fairly certain I'm approaching my limit. Everything in moderation, I suppose, but still. Which is to say, I only visit a Tommy's Burger occasionally anymore. On a recent visit to the Drive Thru (which will test your cornering, if you drive be a big truck, by the way), I found my chili cheeseburger to be exactly as I had remembered: a well seasoned patty, a thick slice of tomato, chopped onions, mustard, cheese, and a bun... somewhere under that big slop of chili! Wrapped in its signature white and yellow wax paper, but mysteriously shoved into a paper burger box, it was one of those interesting collisions of tradition and marketing-- same food, same wrapper, but a softer, cleaner, seemingly focus-group inspired burger box. I can just hear the whining email to corporate: "The last time I visited Tommy's, I opened the bag and got *chili on my hands* and then spilled some in my car!!!!" Of course you did, friend. Of course you did. Sigh. As they say, you can return, but you can't go back. Eating at the Tommy's in Monrovia or Pasadena or outside of Vegas... they're great, but it just ain't the same. Maybe that ephemeral chase and dependable taste will keep me coming back-- probably, even. But nothing will ever compare to the Original... and nothing comes close to the first time. Because if you think Tommy's Burger locations (or this review for that matter) are solely about sloppy food and diet sabotage, then you wouldn't get it anyway. read more

This place is decent burger fast food. I'm pretty sure there are other locations but I happen to come to this one as I was waiting for my car to be maintained. The menu is fairly simple. Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Double Cheeseburger, Hotdog (with or without Chili), Tamales, and a Breakfast Burrito from what I saw. I will assume that their chili is "famous" as they offer it in a bowl and it's an option on everything they offer. I opted for the Combo #2 which was a Cheeseburger with optional Chili, regular fries, and a Ice Tea with Lemon. The cheeseburger was okay. Nothing fancy about it. No special sauce like you would find in a In-N-Out burger. Simple buns with mustard, beef patty, pickles, tomato, onions, and chili. The chili itself had a pastie consistency found similar to The Hat. The fries reminded me of fries at Johnny Rocket's. Not greasy, lots of potato, crunchy and fat. For $5.95, it filled me up. It didn't have me wanting more, but it didn't leave me with a foul taste in my mouth. Again, decent burger fast food. read more

I'm sitting my butt right down to savor every bite of my chili dog with fries well done! The fries well done has the perfect crunch so I can dip it into my chili without it wilting on me. Shame on the manager and team that works here! A homeless man came in the other night trying to order some Chili Cheese fries and the employees didn't want to serve him, even though he had money. He wasn't bothering anybody, he just wanted food. You could here the manager in the kitchen telling the cashier in Spanish not to serve him. When I went back to get a refund, Lupe, was kind, polite and gracious. Also, she was, repeatedly, apologetic. After giving me a refund, she surprised me, by offering to make me a another chili cheese and fries. When I declined, she offered me a chili container, "to go," so that I could, "have it for later when I want to eat it at home." WOW! Not only did Lupe offer to resolve my problem, (this is after giving me money back), not only once, but, twice! Very impressed with Lupe's customer service!! Keep up the good work young lady! Diego at the cash register is rude af. I ordered my burger with extra chili. I also asked if they would be making the fries fresh. My food came out just as I finished paying (bad sign). No extra chili, fries were stale, cold, and had the appearance of shriveled up penises. When I pointed out both problems to Diego, he grabbed my burger (instead of passing it back to the cook) and piled on the chili, had the cook make fresh fries, and handed it all back to me, with the nastiest look on his face. I've ordered chili cheese fries at other places and the portion is usually pretty decent and in a big container, and I figured for $5 I would get something like that. I wish I looked at the photos on Yelp first because the portion size is a joke! Definitely not worth that much in my opinion. The taste was okay, but nothing to really wow me. I used the drive through and I guess their chip reader is slow or has problems. It's not the workers fault and I totally understand, but wish the management would do something about it since it's apparently been giving them problems for awhile. Took over 10 minutes to charge my card. So I ate the fries and decided to look into the nutrition info and just that small chili cheese fries I ordered is about 1,000 cals and 100+ carbs. I love Tommy's!! Let me just say that first! But I was very disappointed with the staff. They had Apple Pay posted on every door and at the register but the staff didn't know how to use it. They didn't even try. They lied to me and said the system is down but they can except my card if I have one. If I had my card on me I obviously would have used it. I don't know what it is about this Original Tommy's but they always seem to have some sort of issue. Today's issue: they open at 7am, but the fryer wasn't turning on, so it will probably take 20 more minutes to heat up. The food quality is always excellent except when they over cook the burgers, though it's been awhile since that last happened. Speaking of burgers, I prefer their 1/4 lb patties, but it's been years now and they still don't list the prices for them. How long should it take to update the menus?!? Actually, the more I think about it, the more I wonder why I come here. Oh yeah, it's because when they get it right, which they usually do, they're awesome.
