I am so amazed that this place has not been reviewed more. And really disappointed that there were not a lot of "gringos", like me, streaming out the door. I am telling you, you have no idea what you are missing! Tonight was our first time, and it was heart stopping it was so good. I had to tap into the recesses of my ancient brain to remember some of the Spanish words for things, but with a lot of pointing, smiling, and mispronunciations, we managed to successfully order an amazing meal. The initial draw for my hubby was the mole. Moles are very complex sauces that require many processes, and can take greater than a day to make correctly. And not all moles are the same. Ortiz' makes several different types. You have not experienced a great mole until you have tried their rojo, or another one with "colorado" in the name. We had a caldo de res made with beef ribs, a chile relleno (stuffed with chicken), an empanada that resembled a quesadilla but was a huge homemade corn tortilla filled with chicken, vegetable, and sauce, served with sliced avocado, tomato, onion. As if that was not enough food, we ordered to go a mole with chicken leg, and a tamale with mole. oh yeah, the bakery was not left untouched. Three pan dulce came home with us. I showed some restraint - we would usually pick a half dozen. Amazing, all of it. And huge servings at very affordably low prices. I would order the same again, but their menu really cries out to try more. This may have been a low budget meal in humble surroundings, but with all the perfection of a 5 star restaurant when it comes to taste. We will be in this area for the rest of this week, and no doubt, we will be back to Ortiz Bakery at least one more time before we have to drag ourselves home. This place could easily become a habit any time we pass through. I do believe this place has their hands on great chefs.

Today February 27 at 3:30 I went in to buy a lot of bread because I've been coming here for many years obviously my family and I like this bread but I will probably stop coming here because of the horrible service of the cashier she extremely rude the way she spoke to me I asked her to please sell me box not to give me a box but to sell me the box because my bread was going to be swished if she put all the bread in a bag well she gave me attitude infront of another customer and walked away left me talking to my self you guys need to hire people with better customer service.

"Boy what you looking for? You know where them cookies are…read moreYeah, I caught yo' ass red-handed in that cookie jar" (Doja Cat) It's a tough call to decide what was better. The incredibly sweet woman behind the counter who helped us with a dessert order for a family dinner for twelve, the sheer beauty and variety of the baked goods in her store, or the 20 amazing cookies we ended up buying. The Carlsbad Bakery has been around for 40+ years specializing in Danish and French pastries, quiche, cupcakes, cakes, and too many eye-popping things to list. We walked over on a Friday and after talking to the proprietor decided that a variety of cookies would be the way to go. What wasn't easy was deciding what type of cookie, because their big chocolate chip, pistachio, almond, cherry, and peanut butter cookies all looked beyond amazing. We decided on a box of 20 mixed cookies ($52.90) and returned the next day to pick them up. My Sweet Lord, the box was as heavy as a bowling ball and was warm with freshly baked cookies. The intoxicating aroma penetrated the carton and filled our hotel room. When they were served at dinner, people's eyes popped out of their heads because they were so gorgeous. I managed to restrain myself and limited my dessert to one pistachio cookie that was fantastic. Of course, all of my cousins wanted to know where we found these amazing cookies. Thank you, Carlsbad Bakery, for such a fantastic customer experience. Your store is beautiful, and your product is extraordinary.

With only fifteen minutes before they closed, we were lucky they had a cake, and the friendly staff were more than happy to write "Happy Birthday" on top. They also had candles for sale. The baked goodies behind the glass looked so good, we also got an eclair and a peanut butter fudge brownie. The cake was delicious - with a layer of cream and strawberries inside, and the eclair was airy and creamy. But that peanut butter fudge brownie was amazing - thick, dense, and full of flavor. If you're ever nearby, stop in a grab a few goodies from VAN DOUGH - you'll be glad you did!

This time a Sunday morning around 9:30am, just before the church crowd. Place seemed unusually empty; maybe three customers, some others just getting some pastries in a bag to go. The parking lot was empty as well. Perhaps it gets much busier in another hour. We ordered an omelet with house potatoes, since they 'didn't have' hash browns that were on the menu. We also shared a two-stack of pancakes. Food tasted terrific. My wife keeps talking about those pancakes. The portions were acceptable, as the wife and I shared one plate, a stack of pancakes and a less than truly good chocolate-almond croissant. I do consider the cleanliness and order of the establishment a factor of my experience. Basic stuff, like cleaning the hot sauce bottle caps. Sheesh! Also, why is there a leaf blower in the dining room? The leaf blower stayed right there the entire time we were visiting. I wish I could say this was a great experience, but that experience is still elusive after all these years. CritDicks
