We chose Osaka for dinner on a Sunday night with family. They were busy and we waited about 5-10 mins to get seated. Once we had a table, our server was friendly and attentive. We sampled several different sushi rolls, appetizers, and hibachi entrees. Everything was fresh and assembled with care. My steak hibachi was good The fried rice had nice flavors and my vegetables were crisp. The sushi was the best I've ever had. The same can be said for the crab rangoon. They came in an order of 6, were absolutely humongous, and were stuffed with crab meat and cream cheese. The restaurant itself seemed clean and organized, but I didn't notice much of the decor. Honestly, I want to come here more but none of my family seems to like this place as much. They're all addicted to the ginger sauce at Stix. I do wish I had more excuses to come here. The fried rice is what I remember! Recently Stix's fried rice has seemed to have gotten way more basic but Osaka has really stepped theirs up!! For example, Osaka uses seasoned butter, vegetables, egg, soy sauce, and chicken in their rice. Stix only uses egg and soy sauce now. The difference is very clear and I now prefer Osaka! I also LOVED Osaka's sushi. Talk about having sushi for days- my only complaint is I wish they'd make it easier to tell which rolls are deep fried and that they'd make the menu easier to open. I don't mind a huge menu, but one that I have to spread over two seats is not good. I have to admit, the chicken hibachi wasn't as good as I was hoping for, but I really liked the shrimp. I wish they had some spicy sauce besides sriracha to add to my food, like chili paste. But I guess I'll just get shrimp next time instead. The sushi though was great! I may also just stick to getting sushi here instead of anything else. The Yamabuki rill is so good but it's so big it's difficult to fit into my mouth in one bite. I have jaw problems so I might just have to cut this one in half. It's definitely good enough to get again. DO NOT EAT HERE. I am writing this so no one else has to experience what I did. I've been a regular customer here for years and watched this place completely fall apart. The quality, cleanliness, and customer service have gone downhill badly. I ordered hibachi to go and opened my food at work only to find a long black hair inside my meal. It was absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. This is a serious cleanliness and food safety issue. After work, I returned to the restaurant to give them a chance to fix THEIR mistake. Instead, the owner was incredibly rude, dismissive, and showed zero concern. She refused to remake the food or take responsibility even though it would have cost her next to nothing to correct. When we asked for it (after hibachi was well on its way and being distributed around), soup given was cold. Salad came after we hibachi was complete and we were finishing our meals. My younger daughter wanted to go to a restaurant where they cook at your table for her birthday. Made reservations at Osaka and quickly learned why this was my first visit back after walking out their door from dining 10 years ago. Even though I live 5 minutes from this establishment, I was quickly reminded of how unprofessional and horrible the service is at this spot. We arrived and were sat within 5 minutes of our reservation. It took the waitress 17 minutes to take our order. Once placed, it was another 50 minutes before the chef showed up to start on dinner. Now our chef, Stephen, was the only bright spot the entire night. When I asked the waitress if the chef would be out soon after 40 minutes of patiently waiting, her response "he's coming soon!" For the type and quality of food you get, this spot is very over priced. If I'm going to pay $20+ from the kids menu for chicken, fried rice, soup, and vegetables, the service needs to step up big time. Food quality is very low for what you pay as well. I had to ask multiple times for a refill on drinks after sitting long periods with empty glasses. Menu's were sticky as if they hadn't been wiped down in months too. I'm giving this location a one star because it operates completely different than all other locations. I have been to Osaka from the original branch in Cordova before they franchised. My wife jokes that I'm personally responsible for at least one of the expansion due to our frequent visits. Nothing will ever touch it, and it's sad to see what has come to the rest. The Collierville location is something special entirely. Great location and decent atmosphere are the only thing positives about it. Waiters and servers pass by you as if you are diseased. Eye contact is strictly forbidden. You pretty much have to make a seen to get their attention. Their response is often one of of annoyance. All that being said, nothing will touch their approach to to-go orders. First and foremost, try calling an order any night. The phone will go to voicemail 99.9% of the time. If you do get someone to answer, you can count on your food not even beginning its journey until you are standing arm to arm with other angry customers in a doorway the size of a broom closet. This has occurred far too often not be the procedure. You might be asking yourself why would he keep going back?? Well, I have out of town relatives with fond memories of times of yore. They insist, so I endure. Most times you have to order at the bar because they take the phone off the hook. One would think that (at least) the food would be hot when you get it. After an hour (minimum) of jockeying around other frustrated customers, your food will be delivered. You can guarantee most will be cold, soup spilled, or items are missing. After all of the mental fatigue, the thought of correcting only ensures the only warm third of your meal will be cold just because you dared ask for an Osaka sauce. Because we all know, filling a shot glass of Osaka sauce is a 15 minute chore. If you must order a to-go order, then Cordova branch will at least answer their phone. My husband and I decided to try this place since it's closer to where we live, rather than going to the Cordova location. Upon entering, we were greeted immediately and taken to our table. I noticed there were a lot of hibachi tables, and their sushi bar area was quite empty. We ordered our usual, and while it wasn't bad, it also wasn't the best. Our server was attentive and provided good service. I was a bit confused when I saw that gratuity was already added to our check, as it was just the two of us. However, we still tipped him more because we appreciated his effort, and he seemed to be one of only two servers working that night. My family has frequented Osaka since opening. We have given it numerous chances to improve in recent years. The last time there will be the last time we darken their doors. Wait staff was rude to the point of almost being aggressive, chef, prepared food OK serve sauces, and plastic disposable ramekins did not perform. Very large and extensive hibachi and sushi menu. They offer half rolls here for many of the sushi rolls which are nice if you're in between choosing from all the choices! I'm a huge fan of salmon, eel, and shrimp rolls so I got the kamikazi, Tennessee, and Macon roll. All very solid choices except the fact that the smoked salmon was very salty and I would replace it with fresh salmon next time I come. I also got the Hawaiian fried rice which was delicious! Lots of pineapple, shrimp, and chicken to eat and share with others. COVID related - I came here to dine in on a Saturday night and it was very very busy. Most the tables I saw were filled & there were many large hibachi parties at the restaurant.
