Osaka Ya's manju and mochi are very good for Northern California standards (they miss the top rating if they are compared to some of the manju places in Hawaii). What makes them exceptional is that they offer both high quality manju products and shaved ice! That's a wicked combination although I wish they offered condensed milk as a topping for the shaved ice as that would make their red bean shaved ice perfect. I felt some of their manju (ie strawberry mochi filled with lima bean filling) was just too sweet and I would stick to the less sweet options. Peanut butter lovers will love any of the peanut butter mochi options, it's like having a spoonful of Skippy peanut butter in your mouth with homemade mochi. I would come back for the manju or shaved ice but moreso for the shaved ice. read more

Not Ululani's but pretty darn good still. I still don't know how they manage to keep the flavor consistent throughout, but this ain't your standard carnival shaved ice. Snow cones are great, but the service has really gone downhill. I think the word got out on how great they are and the small window cannot handle the crowds. We went here on a Sunday evening and I kid you not we waited 40 minutes for a snow cone. There were five people inside working but there seemed to be no communication among them and shaved ice sat on the counter for a really long time before someone added syrup. Also, they would complete half an order, complete another order, then finish the other half of the order. Maybe shaving ice is more complicated than it looks, but it shouldn't take this long when the ice is already frozen. Next time I will just get a slushy at 7-11. read more

Came here for a snow-cone on a hot 100+ degree Sacramento day recently and was amazed. How hot was it? There was a girl sitting on the ground out front who was close to fainting due to the heat. Her remedy of choice: snowcone. When the mercury rises, there is no better way to cool off than a huge bowl of shaved ice smothered in delicious flavored syrups. I love this place! It's a small store with cooked foods, frozen foods, drinks, freshly made mochi & manju, and shaved ice. In the summer time, the shaved ice window is insanely popular. The service can be a little slow, but it's because they pay attention to detail and make it right! The shaved ice is legit, fine powdery ice with killer flavors. My personal fav is the Kintoki: shaved ice and sweet red aduzki beans! My husband loves the "root beer float": vanilla ice cream (bottom), shaved ice with root beer syrup (top). Te mochi and manju is superb too. The fresh mochi has a delicate, soft and chewy texture. I love the plain white mochi with the smooth red bean paste and the crunchy peanut butter mochi. My husband loves the smooth peanut butter mochi. Also the manju is a new fav of mine. It's a pancake like batter on the outside with smooth white beans on the inside topped with a walnut half. The batter on the outside is thin, slightly sweet and just enough to cover the bean paste. The smooth white beans (I think are Lima beans) are so velvety smooth that it melts in your mouth! The walnut tops it, offering a nice nutty flavor and crunchy texture. Overall this place has great service and provides a consistently good product! read more

I LOVE me my Japanese shaved ice and this place hits the spot! Aaaah, fond memories of my Japanese grandparents. They would shave the ice, sweeten with a little sugar and juice, and voila... a tasty summertime treat. I was so pleased to find out that Osaka-ya serves shaved ice to offset the sweltering Sacramento summer. Shaved ice beats snow cones, hands down. Desserts are wonderful here. Shaved ice packed around ice cream is spectacular on a hot summer day, with a really pleasant variety of flavors. Strawberry ice cream with a blue raspberry snowcone is so simple, yet so satisfying. Or the way a root beer snowcone packed around a core of banana ice cream just works so so well. To be honest I've never made it farther than the dessert window, but after hearing word of the little storefront carrying natto, I think I may need to make a midwinter shopping trip there. The boyfriend and I were walking around town in the scorching heat when I decided to look at Yelp for something refreshing. We drove here as quickly as possible and each ordered a shaved ice. We seriously thought it was going to be a Japanese style shaved ice but it wasn't. Still delicious on those hot days but it's not as great as I had imagined. I think Japanese shaved ice are usually more fine than the ones serve here. While here, don't forget to stop inside the shop for some peanut butter mochi. It's seriously delicious. about the only thing that remains ingrained in my brain about sacramento is sno-cones, with adzuki beans, and a giant sprinkling of green tea powder. that and peanut butter filled manju. hmmmmm.... yes. and this is the only place to get it. there isn't even any place in san francisco that would compare to the cute little manju shop in the middle of sacramento that is osaka ya. it's also got other groceries and sundries so make sure to check out the store if you're just using the sno-cone window. warning: can be a little tricky figuring out just exactly when they're open. but then again, that's part of the charm! read more

I've been buying mochi and manju here occasionally for the past couple of years. Prior to that, I used to frequent a small family owned store in J-town in SJ (but that's another review if I feel so compelled). Osakaya is a nice comfortable store with an ambiance reminiscent of small neighborhood stores in Japan. Close quarters but ample shelf space. Rustic but clean. (editor's note: reminiscent with the exception of the Spam maki :)). I actually prefer this over the gleaming, overly sterile shelves typical of Tokyo department stores -- somehow it just seems right. The manju and mochi are good. They do very well with the ingredients they have available to them here in the US. I'd recommend anything with kinako -- my personal preference. And I give them an extra star for creativity -- their creamy peanut butter mochi is actually quite tasty (I don't care for the crunchy version as I feel it conflicts with the texture of the mochi). I was a little apprehensive at first -- I've never seen this before (is it unique here? or is this considered a modern mochi?) But I have a strong affinity for nuts and peanuts and so this catered to my likes. And nuts seem like a natural extension to the beans typically used to fill/coat mochi (especially the nuttiness of kinako). The only thing is that I'm not sure what to drink with it. As other knowledgeable reviewers have mentioned, mochi pairs very nicely with hot tea -- the commingling of flavors enhances the experiences of both by creating new flavors while offsetting the sweetness of the red bean paste and the bitterness of tea. While hot green tea works well, I recommend experimenting with other types of teas, especially Chinese teas. Try stronger, darker ones like pu-ehr / pu-li. Or even oolong. (but please get free leaf teas - not tea bags). But, getting back on point, I haven't figured out what drink matches well with the peanut butter mochi. Perhaps I'll ask the store next time for recommendations. Hot chocolate? Mocha? Warm milk? :) I've also enjoyed the shoo creams (cream puffs) here. Not bad, especially when fresh. Now, if only I could find a store that makes senbei..... And Kyoto style tofu and yuba..... We need more small shops like this in Sactown. But I digress -- see, I told you that this store compels one to reminisce. read more

Snowcone and Mochi are super sweet. There is a trash can right outside the store. I can tell most people can only finish half the snowcone. Mochi looks good in appearance. The prices are reasonable. It's only $1.25 each, which is much cheaper than mochi in gourmet Japanese sweet shop in San Francisco. But, it tastes so sweet. read more

Closest to Hawaiian Shaved Ice in the Sacto area. Didn't give 5 stars due to length of time to get the shaved ice. Thankfully we beat the rush but it still took a while. It was a 30 min wait for those that had been in line for a while. They also don't mix favors and the selection of flavors was short. I had the watermelon (Kintoki?) with Vanilla ice cream, red bean, topped with Sweet Condensed Milk. It was DELICIOUS!!!!! Definitely recommend it and would go back. read more

Being 9 month pregnant, I was craving for something sweet (cream puffs & mochi). My husband drove me here all the way from Rocklin. I was darn excited to visit a dessert place! The place was like a mini market with desserts. It didn't bother me. We bought a punch of different mochi, 2 kinds of cream puffs, and some green tea 'cupcake' looking thing.
