I love the seafood rice cakes - absolutely the best item on the menu, IMO. The service could use some work. I am okay with waiting, but it's disrespectful if you walk past me ten times, chat with one specific table, and not even acknowledge me. But then again, we gotta cut the wait staff some slack. Came here with a group of 5 on a Thursday night, and was seated right away with a reservation. We ordered the oysters, Korean fried chicken, a whole chicken, the Johnson tang, and the steak kimchi fried rice. I felt like the Korean fried chicken was quite mediocre, while the oysters were pretty fresh. The highlight was def the steak Korean fried rice and the Johnson Tang. The whole chicken we ordered, without the sauce was way too dry on the inside. The restaurant itself is quite busy, and dimly lit. However, the service here is nothing to rave home about. My friends and I found the waiters were quite rude. They weren't attentive, gave us a small table for 5 people, and didn't take empty food dishes away even when we asked multiple times. I've made it a point to avoid the full-throttle K-town area on weekends, just because it feels like COVID never happened and everything is so jam-packed with people not wearing masks. Osamil is tucked away on a quieter street away from the action and I appreciated their outdoor seating, which went above and beyond just putting out some tables and chairs on the sidewalk. The inside is nicely decorated with hooks and heater lamps. The "gastropub" menu had a fair number of things I had my eye on but first and foremost: The sweet potato fries are the best fries I've ever had. I am willing to stake everything on that. They use the sweet Korean potatoes and it's crispy, burn-your-tongue, thick slabs of potato with a side of delicious spicy mayo. The whole Korean fried chicken for four people is a pretty good deal. Really crunchy skin, juicy meat (yep, even the dreaded white breast meat) and I loved the garnishes and sauces, with a fresh egg slaw on the side. Dishes not worth getting: Seasonal Osamil salad: This was an odd hodge-podge of ingredients that tasted like candy fruit salad. The addition of blue cheese overwhelmed everything else. Chicken wings: In my head I was envisioning something like Bonchan where the skin is super crisp but the wings here were just all right and kind of puny. Too much sauce. Uni bibimbap: I may be biased because they incorporate raw shallots for this dish and it made my mouth feel deathly well into the next morning. It looks visually appealing and the taste was all right with the squid ink. Points also for giving a fair amount of uni. But man oh man ... I wish they lightened up on the shallots that were added. Food came out quickly and piping hot. Just be aware that they do enforce a 1.5 hour limit. You should definitely make a reservation before coming here. My friend and I called in and couldn't secure a table until 7:30 pm, even after the rush hours had passed. Even at that time, the restaurant was still bustling with people. The food was incredibly delicious. The Topokki was wonderfully tender and bursting with incredible flavors. It includes mussels, shrimp, and fish cake. I'm usually not a seafood fan, but the combination was exceptionally tasty. We also ordered soy garlic wings, which I found to be really good. The flavor was evenly distributed over the wings, striking a perfect balance between sweetness and savoriness. The kimchi fried rice was my least favorite of the three, but it was still incredibly delicious--everything you'd expect from kimchi fried rice. Lastly, this place is quite snug. I can imagine it might be challenging to navigate through the tables, especially during the winter when you're wearing a large puffer jacket. I was looking forward to trying the interesting dishes at Osamil. We ordered a lot of food and ended up absolutely stuffed. Overall I didn't love any of the dishes I had here, but it's also just not in my taste palette. The pork shank is massive. It was not super tender and had a pretty porky flavor. Overall I didn't love this but it was fine and came with a lot of veggie sides. The rose seafood ddukbokki was very creamy with (maybe too soft) rice cakes. The shrimp was plump and tender and the squid was good. The mussels were tasty as well. Overall I don't tend to love creamy things but the seafood in this dish was good. The jjukkumi (baby octopus) was not my favorite preparation of jjukkumi. The sauce was pretty sweet and there was a lot of filler that was just hard cabbage. There was a crispy onion thing that was pretty good. I wanted to like the clam tang more than I did. It didn't feel super fresh/clean. There were a lot of clams of different sizes and I think they were a tiny bit overcooked and chewy. The broth was pretty tasty though a bit murky. It was nice to have a soup to balance the other dishes we got. We also got a couple of drinks. The presentation of Cloud 9 was totally unexpected. The drink itself was pretty strong but otherwise unremarkable. Overall it was interesting to see the interesting twists they put on Korean dishes. Delicious Korean gastropub located in K-town. My husband make reservations for Saturday night at 5pm which I thought was a great idea. There were people lining up when the restaurant opened and I was glad we were secured a seat. We ordered the Johnson tang (basically Korean army stew) and the Korean Market Chicken. Both were considered "large" entrees but we were able to bring it home and have it for lunch the next day! The Johnson Tang broth was full of flavor and the perfect stew for a cold day. There was spam, noodles, sausages, onions, cheese. Everything you could want and more. The Korean market chicken was well fried, and crispy. Osamil is a great option for a night out of modern Korean dining and drinks. A reservation is recommended but there were plenty of tables open when we went late at night. We got the I'm so into you and the Lost in Seoul both of which were quite sweet and fruity although the single gummy bear in the Lost in Seoul was strange. The foie gras toast is definitely a Osamil specialty but the thick greasy foie gras flavor is overpowering and leaves an unpleasant lingering aftertaste. I can understand the appeal of the sweet and rich foie gras but I would not recommend it to anyone trying it for the first time. The rose tteokbokki on the other hand was a favorite. It comes with plenty of cheesy sauce, tteokbokki, and fresh seafood. This dish reminded me of seafood fondue with a Korean take. Loved the sweet creamy flavor complimenting the chewy tteokbokki. I was basically back to back with the person behind me and got bumped a few times by waiters They have a good amount of cocktails on their drink menu! not too overwhelming and they all sounded pretty yummy. I got the Oi Rita, which was mezcal and cucumber. Pretty strong cucumber flavor, but that's my jam so I enjoyed it! I was pleasantly surprised with all the food we got! - Squid fries: standard fried pieces of squid, but can't go wrong! - Uni bibimbap: delicious!! The Seafood Rose Tteokbokki was such an interesting take--having rice cakes in a tomato-based sauce with mussels and fried mozzarella balls. It was an impressive fusion dish that I unexpectedly liked more than I thought I would. The Kimchi Fried Rice with the Prime Hangar Steak is a popular favorite for a reason. Kimchi fried rice is always delicious and the steak was cooked very well. While I don't think it'll blow your mind in terms of flavor, it did taste incredible. The Soy & Garlic Wings were as expected for good Korean fried chicken. Very crispy, good balance of flavor, and adequate amount of meat on the bones. Osamil delivers great food in a fabulous atmosphere. I didn't get a chance to go upstairs to the cocktail bar, but I have heard lovely things about it. Great spot for group dinner! We were a group of 7 and we got seated at a round table indoors. It felt a little cramped at first but we quickly got comfortable to the family style dinner. But it definitely become more manageable as we cleared out our plates. The Korean market fried chicken had a nice crispy to it on the skin and the meat was not dry. The cold slaw that comes with the dish was also delicious to eat in combination with the chicken. The pork shank was very tasty except that the meat and skin were a bit too soft. How cute is their name, which means 531 in Korean to signify the address? Reservations were packed online, but calling them got us seats for an earlier time. I've been seeing too many pictures of the outdoor area that I didn't realize how vibey it was inside. There's racks of wine used as decor, and the place was dimly lit for a classy romantic vibe. Too bad our one server didn't pass the vibe check. He pretty much left us to ourselves the entire meal, that it ruined my perception of this place. It was hard to grab him when he barely appeared or when he did, he wouldn't glance our way once. When we finally managed to flag him to get our bill, he would attend to others instead. The Seafood Rose Tokbokki ($18) came first. It was pretty much tomato sauced rice cakes that didn't go well together. I enjoyed the fried mozzarella cheese ball in there though, that was about it. The Oden Tang ($28) was a crowd favorite, particularly because it's just perfect on these winter days. The assortment of fish cakes, mixed with the sweetness of the Korean blue crab, were all transferred in to make such a flavorful delicious soup! The one thing I've been dying to come here for, the Osamil Korean Fried Rice ($25) with Prime Hanger Steak ($10) was good, but it wasn't "you should come here for it" good. The fried rice was spicy, flavorful and uniquely mushy, with not a single sign of burntness at all. The steak was just there for presentation though, as it's just bloodied meat and didn't add anything. There were already meat pieces in the rice. Lastly, the Soy & Garlic Wings ($16) of 7pcs gave me a surprise as I wasn't expecting them to be that good. I thought I would be biting into a dry mediocre drumstick, but wow! The wings weren't just crispy, but there was so much flavor in that glaze, melting away any potential gamey taste of the chicken. I'm shocked to find such delicious wings in a restaurant that doesn't specialize in it. Food was pricey, as a pattern of Korean pub food, but this was still a cute delectable place to try once. I have had army stew (called johnson tang here) in multiple fine Korean establishments and this was in its own category. Exceptionally creamy and rich without feeling overly greasy. The beans and smoked sausage add an extra element of smokey flavor and creaminess not found in any other army stews. The Korean fried chicken is just perfectly fried and the soy garlic glaze is the way to go. Finally fries which are almost impossible to be bad were better with the creamy dipping sauce. All were good but notable mention for the pork shank. It was on the pricier side but it was unbelievably tender and the portion size seem to justify the price. The aesthetics of the restaurant in the first floor has a minimal style which is not surprising for a Korean eatery but with cute warm touches like the floor to ceiling bottles and book shelf against one wall and a few cute booths that lend to a cozier intimate feel that are perfect for small gatherings. But the real star of the show is the food. I loved the classic chicken wings, short rib skewers, endive salad but the kimchi fried rice is the stuff that dreams are made of. The drink were yummy. You won't find an extensive nonKorean wine list but you will find creative cocktails with a Korean flair.
