Steak tartare was nice but not mind blowingly good (I read a rave review in Timeout Chicago). Paired very nicely with the crispy bread. Grilled octopus with pureed potato, olives, etc was dynamite. The bad: Our waitress was a dud. She was totally lackluster and also seems to know or care very little for Italian food. She even mispronounced the "panna cotta" (luckily that didn't prevent it from being delicious). Our runner was Italian, much more pleasant to talk to and much more knowledgeable. I know I'm being harsh but I don't understand how you can work at an Italian restaurant without an inkling of passion for the food or culture. The okay: Their risotto (our shared secondo) was enjoyable but it was way too creamy. I think they need to do a little bit more reduction so that the flavor is more developed. It looked like cottage cheese and just tasted somewhat bland. The crusted salmon in that dish definitely saved it. Overall, my bill was still over 100 dollars for two people (even though this place is listed as $$ it's more like $$$) and I'd rather spend that at a much better Italian restaurant like Nico Osteria in the Loop. Came here for restaurant week. I'm coming back. For starters I had swordfish & Shrimp meatballs best one I've had. Granted I haven't had many. My wife got the Pappardelle pasta, extremely distinctive and rich flavor of mushroom and pork shoulder. Main course for me was Winter Greens with Duck egg and seared Foie Gras - PERFECT! Those TV shots were the egg just makes the difference, we'll it's true for this dish and the Foie Gras just puts it over the top. My wife had the braised rib that was just OK for me. For desert I had the cookie with dipping sauce good and my wife had the pannacota with apple - excellent!! The pannacota has this clean taste that just overwhelms your senses with its honesty. After wanting to try a restaurant for a long time, I usually get overly excited. Osteria Langhe is a restaurant that has been on my list, but my girlfriend is the one who really wanted to try this top rated Italian restaurant in Logan Square. Situated in one of the most popular areas in Chicago, Logan Square, Osteria Langhe has made its presence felt since it joined the neighborhood over 3 years ago. Fairly small on the inside and having some outdoor seating, Osteria Langhe was jam packed on this beautiful Tuesday night in Chicago. The crowd was still pouring in when we left around 9am. That is when you know the restaurant is very popular, but it was also because Tuesday is the 3-course $38 meal option. Our table all decided to go with this deal because the prices are fairly high here. Other than having a overall incredible meal, I do have a couple of cons to note. The waiter service was not very impressive and the prices were steep for the portions. There are always times where you sit down and nobody comes over to greet you. Unfortunately that was the case at Osteria but the busboys were on top of everything which was a plus. Also, the portion sizes should have been bigger for the price and considering this is a home style Italian restaurant. What I did like a lot is when the Owner of Osteria came by our table and explained his favorite meals. This guy had a ton of personality with influence in his cooking from Northern Italy and French. Being a Yelp Elite, of course I asked only insightful questions and he kindly gave us thoughtful answers and came by with some wine at the end of our meal too. I appreciated seeing how he also was helping out with the service and doing what was necessary to keep the flow and diners happy- after being at his other restaurant. This was my family's first Tuesday night meal of the Summer and my cousin was also invited. This guy can eat and overall my parents, girlfriend, and I all walked out happy campers. We all take our food seriously and try to choose new and popular restaurants for Tuesday night Chicago dinners in the Summer. I can say we are off to a great start in the first Round of an exciting 10-Round food tour. I attached many pictures to this review as the plating and overall flavors of the dishes were impressive. With influences of Northern Italian and French, you could smell the butter, cheese and fresh pasta coming out the kitchen. We ordered a little bit of everything and started with a delicious Caesar salad and homemade bread for the table. My cousin who is hard worker and State Farm owner, is also a smart man because he trusts me 100% on food ordering decisions and let me order for both of us. This was a great choice because I went with the shrimp and tortellini style pasta for appetizers and crispy porchetta and bologense pasta for entrees. The pastas definitely stood out as they were homemade and filled with incredible (and expensive) cheese. The bolognese was a combination of carne and rabbit! The porchetta was incredible as expected and left me wanting more. Everything was awesome and I also got to try the octopus and halibut dishes that my Dad and Girlfriend ordered as I am not shy and wish I can always try every dish on the table. Everything was extremely flavorful and I had memories of food that I enjoyed in Italy. I always find myself asking a similar question at the end of a meal: would I go back? The answer is usually no, why? Likely because there is stiff competition in the Chicago food industry, we cook a lot, and I like to try new restaurants. However, I would definitely go back to Osteria Langhe as the food is a homerun and the overall experience was memorable. I would also love to try the newer and more laid back and second restaurant from the Osteria Langhe owner called Animale!! Small and romantic. Great up and coming chefs with excellent food to back their expertise. My wife and I ate there for the majority of our date night. We experienced 3 parts of their Italian cuisine (antipasti, primipasti, and secondi). The wine selection there is definitely worth your time as well. The menu items were reasonably portioned and maintained their gourmet nature nicely. Each dish was equally as exciting. We had the grilled octopus, capisante, braised rabbit, and something else I can't remember the name of. Each were great! Pleasant manager, humorous staff, and romantic (candle-lit) environment. So disappointed in this place. Went there for dinner with a group back in July and there was a wine tasting. OL has order sheets and since we loved the wine and the meal we ordered a case of wine. I asked to get an email invoice and was assured it was no problem. Fast forward 2 weeks I still haven't been charged or contacted. I call the restaurant to inquire. I do not get a phone call back but two days later my card is charged for the case (minus the full case discount we were promised, but whatever) I never get an email invoice. Call and inquire. No response. Fast forward to last Tuesday, now 6 weeks with zero communication and I call to inquire again. I receive a message back from a manager that the owner is out of town for a few days but "one way or another" I'll get my wine. Huh? Literally no information. Now yet another week later still zero info and I'm disputing the charge with my credit card company. This place has great food but the lack of professionalism displayed by their owner in this situation has totally soured me on the place and I won't be going back. Wow, I really wanted to like this place. I've lived in Logan Square for over a year and have been dying to go after hearing great things and left very disappointed. I should note that 2 of our party of 5 enjoyed their meal and did get something different. The service and wine was fine and good, no complaints there but the food was where it really fell apart. We got the PLIN and COSTOLETTA DI MAIALE. The Plin was raved about and it was good, but honestly was a bit salty. The Costolette was EXTREMELY salty... to the point where it honestly hurt my tongue and I feared waking up in the middle of the night in severe dehydration. You could tell it would have been good, minus the saltiness, sadly. We also got the Shrimp was very, very bland. This dish had no sauce or even light sauce that I could see. Really just tasted like cooked cauliflower (no salt this time) and blanched shrimp. The beef Tartar (CARNE CRUDA) I would describe as "meh" as well. It was good, nothing to rave about. It said it had egg in it which wasn't visible. The bread was burnt, we ordered extra which was less burnt. For dessert we got the SFOGLIATINE. It was good but nothing I'd come back for. $350 later and pretty disappointed, I can't say I'd go back. One thing to note: My boyfriend got the Rabbit and Gnocchi and loved it. read more

My wife and I went here for our first dinner date post our daughter being born (after ten weeks we needed a night out!). It was exactly what we wanted. Good cocktails, whatever the one with bourbon was spot on. The food was perfect. We had a roasted scallop dish with white beans and carrots, toasted bread with citrus butter, hand pinched ravioli (this was very, very good), roasted duck breast with potatoes and apples, and the pork rib with polenta special. The duck breast was good but a little too rare. But that is just personal preference. Really wonderful experience and I will definitely be back. We were a group of 4 and had an outstanding experience. We were seated outside on their lovely back patio. Favorite dishes were the Vitello Tonnato, Risotto Capesante, Pesce and Gelato for dessert. Cameron, the Executive Chef, spent time at our table discussing recommendations for us and he did not disappoint! This has become one of my favorite Chicago restaurants. My friends and I were around the neighborhood and we were craving Italian food, we called to see if we needed a reservation and they said no, so we showed up! The place is very cozy with a bohemian/ chic decor. Since we were told the portions were small we decided to try different dishes, we started with the Pane appetizer and it was delicious even though it was just bread and butter but something made it very tasty. Then we decided to get the Plin and Carne Cruda! Out of all the dishes the plin was my favorite, the taste and softness was amazing, sadly it is a small portion but Hey you can always get more. The service was great very attentive, refilling the waters and changing the dish ware every time a new dish came out. The only think I didn't like was the layout of the restaurant, the men's bathroom was right next to the bar something odd, but definitely manageable if you want to try some good Italian food with a modern twist. read more

Let's take the review of a John S. below where he gives Osteria Langhe 2 stars, and he goes on to write his review as if he actually wrote the handbook on "proper dining out." Yelp should just be a blog for people to say if they've had a good or bad experience, and give their opinion on why, either way. Even successful business owners will have different opinions on how to do things, successfully. The great news is we're not the judge and jury for these businesses. We're merely patrons who, if we don't like their offerings, don't have to patronize their establishments. Clearly setting out to "define on a public opinion blog that they do things wrong," is not only inaccurate, but downright indicative of how insecure that person must be. Osteria Langhe was one of the better meals I've had in Chicago in a long time. Everything wasn't perfect, but everything was very good. If you're someone who nit picks price/portion, maybe this place won't be for you? Osteria Langhe - a restaurant created by elitists to serve those who are either too wealthy to care or simply uninitiated to how a restaurant is supposed to operate. Stuck back on Armitage west of the Kennedy, this miniature version of a real Italian restaurant pretends to serve food and wine typical of Italy's Piedmont region. Suffice it to say "no". In Italy, they actually give you some food. Actually lots of food - more than you can eat in one sitting - which is definitely not the case here. With table room for approximately 30 people and maybe 8 more at the bar, the facility is physically thin and cramped. The bar carries only one vodka (Modest) which is apparently made by a friend of the owner in Wisconsin. My martini was served in a traditional 1960's era stubby, cocktail glass. When served (in an un-chilled glass) there wasn't enough liquid in the glass to cover the olives resting on the bottom. These weren't Colossal olives mind you, they were the small ones that you get when you're a college kid on a budget. The vodka itself was pretty good - from what I could tell. It was gone in one sip - or it may have evaporated, it's hard to tell. My wife had a Manhattan, which had one more sip than mine. Oddly, they kept re-filling the couple next to us every two minutes! They must've been regulars - but to make the disparity so obvious was strange. I decided to switch to a glass of wine. Maybe it's just me but when I start to feel that I'm being ripped off, I begin to gauge what I'm getting not so much with reference to the service and surroundings but more to the amount of product being delivered. I was served about 6 ounces for $14. I rate my wine choice as a 6 out of 10 for quality. The menu is written in a combination of just enough English and broken Italian to confuse the even the most experienced of weekend foodies. As an example, listed as an appetizer, the "Panino Aperto" (which translates as "open sandwich") is described as "grilled bread, please ask your server for seasonal daily dressing". This, like several other menu options is "MP" or "Market Priced". Are you serious?! Market price for bread?! As we were out for the evening and the Panino Aperto was recommended by the couple next to us, I didn't ask the price. So what did we get for our MP open sandwich appetizer? Three very small pieces of thinly sliced charred bread, topped with fatty, chewy, prosciutto, parmesan cheese and olive oil. The price was $14. We then tried the "Insalata - farm greens & vegetables, summer tomato vinaigrette". Small, passable but bland. What can you say about salad unless someone really takes the time to invent something new and interesting? This is not. Now onto the first course ("primi"). Let's take a second here to ask the question, "why first and second courses on an otherwise limited menu?" Ah yes, to run up your tab because no one entree is enough to feed anyone who's not the field of modeling or hasn't undergone a weight reduction procedure. Having been to other like establishments in the past (all of which are now out of business) we were getting suspect and had a sneaking feeling of how the entrees were going to be presented. We opted for one order of the "PLIN" (la tur) which was described as ravioli with parmesan, butter and thyme by our server ($14). Sure enough, a large, wide rimmed bowl arrived with 8 pieces of diminutive, gnocchi-sized pasta bites in the center. I completely understand "al dente" (firm to the bite without being soft) but this was cooked so that the exterior edges were hard and chewy, with the interior cooked perfectly. So one gets the impression that the kitchen let these sit out in the air for a while before cooking. The second course list includes novelties such as braised rabbit. Given our experience so far, I have to say that my guess would be that the whiskers, ears and tail would have been interesting but a waste of time and money. Same for the desserts - which again are listed at "Market Price". For after dessert, Osteria Langhe features digestives ("digestivi"). As a rule I don't drink sweet things but our server was kind enough to bring us two Nardini Amaro cordials. As I said, cordials are not my thing but I tasted it anyway. I would describe the flavor as a combination of chocolate, ginger, chalk and ash. My wife agreed. When the bill came I noticed that our server had added the cordials to the bill and then deducted them off again. This may have been simply for the purpose of noting stock, as many servers have the authority to give away a certain amount of product. Then again, it may have also been to let the customer know that they are responsible for an additional $16 in service. We measure our experience on everything we know about good service, good food and fair pricing based on the quality, preparation and freshness of the ingredients. Osteria Langhe - fails. read more

Thursday night, the restaurant was busy. No big deal. We decided to sit outside because we didn't want to wait for an hour to get an inside table. It's spring, so you think that would be okay. Although, this place could benefit from having heat lamps. At least one for these chillier spring evenings. We waited a while before someone came over to get our drink order, we were not asked for our food order, even though we were clearly ready. Finally they came back to ask our food order. We ordered two simple dishes, and an appetizer. We got the appetizer fairly quickly. Finished it, and then finished our wine as we continued to wait a full hour, outside, as the evening cool really crept in. So much so, our red wine may have as well be chilled to white standards. The group next to us, ordered at least ten minutes before us, never got their food either, and they asked twice. We were left without being checked on for over 20 minutes while we continued to wait, getting ever colder, for our food. Finally we decided to leave. We got up to give the hostess the cost of our wine and appetizer. But the server intercepted. He gave no push back, likely because our food was no where near being ready. So he offered to get us the check. No: "sorry for the delay", "don't worry about the wine", or "the appetizer is on us", "we're so sorry..." Nope. Here's your bill for nearly $40 after tax. No, "sorry you sat in the cold for more than an hour for your food that never arrived." No, "sorry we didn't check on you." Nope. Nothing. I get it. It gets busy. Maybe the kitchen staff was behind. Maybe it was crazy. But whatever the "maybe" it should've been communicated. And the people next to us who asked about their food (twice!), were treated very poorly and with a tinge of contempt, as if they were unreasonable complainers. "It's coming out as soon as it can." "It's been placed, all in order." Blah, blah, blah. This place has great reviews for their food. But I was unimpressed by their tomato salad. It was good, but certainly not the best, and I thought the fennel croutons were overdone and overpowered the flavors of the tomatoes. Even with a reservation, I don't think I'd give this place another chance. read more

When I found out that there would be a Piedmont restaurant replacing Brand BBQ, a massive smile grew on my face. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy Brand (I did), but all one has to do is look at my profile and notice that I'd want my last meal to be in Piedmont and with a ton of amazing Barolo. Since I can't accomplish that, Osteria Langhe is more than an acceptable substitute. I really like what they have done with the old Brand BBQ location. You still have the tables along the wall, but the feel is very classy and there is a bar right in the front. I like how they have used what was in place, but they've definitely have changed things up too. The food was done perfectly. I love the cuisine from Piedmont as it's rustic and savory. You don't see much pasta from here, so this may be some unfamiliar territory for a lot of people. So, take away your normal conceptions on what Italian food is, and enjoy the hell out of this. I started off with the Panino Aperto and the daily spread was crab. This is me nodding with a grin on my face. I then moved onto the roasted chicken. While that may not be the most exciting dish in the world, it was done beautifully. The sauce alone was worth the price of admission. I also sampled some of my friend's salmon (that was on special) and they did a killer job of this too. I can't end my review without mentioning how fantastic the owner Aldo is. You can really tell his passion for all things Piedmont. This passion follows through with the food and the killer wine list. I'm not gonna lie, it was gonna take something downright awful for me not to be a real fan of Osteria Langhe. But, even with me having a good bias towards the food and wine, Osteria Langhe executed every expectation to perfection. I'm a fan of this quaint neighborhood restaurant. We've already visited a few times over the period of the handful of months it's been open and it's nice to see that it's been consistent in quality and service since opening. From the hand-rolled olive breadsticks to the generous pours of wine (great selection of Italian wines btw), you can feel the love that goes into this restaurant. I feel like the prices are reasonable. Though the supersized majority might be irked by the smaller portion sizes, these are probably portion sizes we should be eating. I really enjoyed the rock shrimp appetizer and the panna cotta dessert. There was also a seafood stew type dish that I enjoyed but didn't see on the menu this last visit, but it seems the menu's changed a little bit each time we visit. Street parking has always been easy to find in this area (but then again we tend to eat early, like senior-discount early). Tuesdays are $30 3-course prix fixe days, and you get to pick from the entire menu (minus the risotto) so it's a fantastic deal. Amazing italian food tucked away in Logan Square. Armitage is the new hot spot for great food and drinks and Osteria Langhe definitely does not dissapoint. I came here for restaurant week and have to say I was truly impressed with the menu and impeccable service. With great attention to detail and nice hospitality this quaint little restaurant definitely impressed. I started with the Plin - hand pinched ravioli, la tur, parmesan, thyme, buttler. Every bite created a burst of flavor in my mouth and had my mouth watering for more. I have never had such a delicate and satisfying bite with a choice of pasta before. This housemade delight is a must on the menu when you visit. For my main dish I had the PESCE - pan roasted mahi mahi, grape tomatoes, snap peas, calabrian peppers, fregola, browned butter vinaigrette over a Israeli couscous. Once again, delicate and flavorful with each bite and may I add a generous portion for restaurant week and in general. I had to take food home since I ate every bite of my plin. For dessert I was fortunate enough to try both of the negroni panna cotta - candied blood oranges and gin campari sauce and Vanilla semolina - raspberry coulis . Both interesting and delicious. Overall, I can't stop raving about this place. Dinner was the best by far from restaurant week and I have a feeling that even without restaurant week this place will not fail at satisfying the diner. read more

The bad: -It took an exceedingly long time to get even our wine & appetizer. But they are surely working out the kinks and we diiid get a reservation 2 hours beforehand on a Saturday night - not too shabby. -The portions are rather small for the price. That being said - it was well worth the wait & something we'd pay for again! And again. And again... The good: -Cozy! Love the atmosphere. Great place for a date. -Great service. Friendly, welcoming, unpretentious. It really does make a difference. And once the courses started coming out it was all perfectly timed. Aldo stopped by to check in as well. The hostess was the highlight, an absolute doll. -Food is deliziosissima! All of it. Every single bite. Not a bad forkful was in there. Not a one. Unique flavors done right. We had the poached beef/crispy egg (gives a sharp kiss to my fingertips), insalata (fresh to def), risotto (melts in your mouth), and then the rabbit (amazing). Logan Square is killin it these days. My husband and I decided to take our families to this restaurant for dinner. Friends told us that this place was great. The food was delicious, but we had never been treated the way we did last night. I believe our servers name was Jim, and he was careless about us being there. We were a party of 8 and we felt ignored as we saw him walking by our table and going to his 2 top tables instead. The food runner and the busser were being more attentive and helpful than our server. My husband works at Longman & Eagle, one of the best restaurants in Logan Square, and of course he was mad because he knows exactly how customers should get treated. I'm not understanding why he was ignoring us, but I'm pretty sure it was because we were Hispanic which is extremely sad. Discrimination!!! Great and delicious food, but really really bad service. The food doesn't deserve 2 stars I would give it a 5, but honestly the service was horrible. This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I've found my new favorite Italian place in the city -- not just the neighborhood. Thankfully it also happens to be a few blocks away. The wine recommendations were spot on, the food was devine, and the service was friendly and thoughtful. I am still basking in the afterglow of the Plin -- perfectly al dente, pillowy, creamy, buttery, thymey -- just so freaking good. I loved the light and fresh octopus, while my wife devoured the cauliflower and nettle flan. The steak was cooked just as we ordered and the reduction and fondue accompaniments were fantastic. Had a great Saturday night dinner with some friends here last week. It's a great find in Logan and will definitely keep me coming back for more. We started with a bottle of wine. The owner/manager of the restaurant, Aldo, walked us through the wine list and gave some great suggestions. There were multiple bottles of wine priced in the $30 and $40 range which is definitely fair for sharing a bottle with a friend when you know you will both end up with 2...2.5...3 glasses of wine throughout a long nice dinner. We decided to get 3 appetizers and 3 entrees and share everything. Our appetizers: Capesante (scallops...incredible), Coniglio (rabbit and pancetta puff rolls...wouldn't recommend...but I don't like rabbit...EW), and Plin (ravioli, thyme, parm, butter...pretty much wanted to take a whole bucketload of this heavenly goodness home with me). The appetizers were all small. For entrees we got Tajarin (house made noodles with ragu...YUM), Pollo (chicken breast, pancetta, tomatoes...good...but just chicken..) and risotto (incredible). I would recommend all but the rabbit and the chicken. Go get the Plin. Just go get it now. Looking back I wish we would have gotten 2-3 appetizers to share and then each gotten our own entree. Portions were pretty small but everything was wonderful. Atmosphere is so great and romantic. Price is okay. I wouldn't say it was too expensive but I didn't feel like we were really getting a great deal either. When my husband and I were waiting for our friends we were offered water and drinks while we waited. So I've now been here twice... once with the boyfriend and once with the parents. The Food: First time we started with the Plin, Tajarin & Carne Cruda. Both of us loved all three. The plin is their signature dish - it's basically like cheese ravioli's - what's not to like? Not sure it's MIND-BLOWING but they're addicting and tasty! Carne Cruda is their steak tartare - not the best I have ever had but was also enjoyable. The Tajarin was recco'd by the waitress - pretty basic angel hair pasta with some mild seasonings. I enjoyed it but I'm a sucker for white carbs & garlic. Second time we went with the Vitello Tonnato, Plin & Gamberini. We asked the server between the Vitello Tonnato & the Carne Cruda - and he said FOR SURE Vitello Tonnato, so since I had the CC before, we went with the VT - big disappointment. This was literally deli meat on a plate with a soft boiled egg which unfortunately didn't add much to the dish. I love raw meat and I love eggs and this was a miss. Don't listen to your server - go with the carne cruda!! My parents weren't wild about the plin but they did like the Gamberini - fried shrimp served with garbanzo beans. This to me was something that you'd see duplicated at any restaurant with fried shrimp. While tasty, it felt out of place. For the main dishes, the first time we went with the rabbit and the lamb. The rabbit was the favorite but the lamb was surprisingly inside pasta! The lamb was also really yummy. You could really taste the olives which I love. The pasta was light if you can imagine that in a white pasta, but I think that's a sign of high quality? Maybe? The rabbit was also a waitress recommendation. It's wrapped in pork belly which acts like bacon & it's incredibly juicy and crisp. Would order this again in any situation. With the rents - we added to the rabbit/lamb and went with the steak. The steak was disappointing though i'm not sure what we were expecting. it was 5 tiny small bites and white it was well seasoned it did not feel like the highest quality meat. I hate to say it but almost resembled hamburger meat (in flavor not in looks). My dad who is a meat and potatoes type guy, and struggles when my mom and I make him share everything was not overly thrilled with this one, though he did like the rabbit. Comments around the lamb this time were around how garlicky it was... I didn't remember it quite so garlicky the first time around though it wasn't a turn off for me. The ambiance: This place is cute. It is a gem on Armitage street - twinkle lights all around. Across the street from the tasty freeze :) Would love to try outdoor dining in the summer. The first time I went it was just my boyfriend and I and we were at a small two top table along the wall. The table next to us was SO LOUD and because they were so close to us, there was really nothing we could do about it. We weren't about to ask to be moved considering it was a busy Friday night but overall the restaurant is loud. This was also an issue with my parents who are 65+... I would recommend to all servers everywhere, if you are waiting on a table with older folks, PROJECT YOUR VOICE. No one can hear you and then it just gets awkward when you have to keep repeating yourself... Service: The owner came to our table on my second visit. He told my mom, dad and me all about where the inspiration for the restaurant came from - the little region in Italy that borders France and was invaded by the Austrians - hence why there's more champagne on the menu than prosecco. He called this region, Piemonte, the birthplace of Italy. Really nice guy and I like it when owners roam their restaurants to say hello to the guests. Extra star here :) Waitress on the first visit was nicer than the guy we had with my parents... again back to being loud enough... major issue for the older folk. This was just not my cup of tea. Hubs thought it was pretty good though, so I'll add a star. The majority of my distaste is that it's expensive and small food. I think I should be able to spend $50 a person and feel full, but that wasn't the case here. We had the vitello tonatto to start, which is basically deli cold cuts with half a soft-boiled egg and some sauce. Majorly underwhelming. We also got the risotto, which on this day had pork belly and a lamb sausage. The amount of pork belly was pretty laughable (a bite for each of us), but the risotto was pretty tasty. Hubs said it tasted "like gyros" (not sure if that's what they were going for). I had the tagliata (NY strip with some greens and potatoes), which was barely OK. The steak (about seven or eight bites-worth) was tough to the point that it was hard to chew (and I had ordered it medium). The three or so small potatoes were very nice and crispy, but the greens had a not-so-tasty vinegar-y dressing that made me leave most of it uneaten. Hubs had the rabbit (coniglio), which looked and tasted like chicken. None of the gamey taste, but I think that's what hubs had been gaming for (pun intended). None of the desserts looked appealing so we passed. But there were a number of nice and affordable wines by the glass, so props to that. There are a dozen or two other places in town at this price point I would go before here again. read more

Best pasta in Chicago, hands down. I never thought we'd find a place here that does it right. And the past portions are appropriately sized. This is definitely quality over quantity. Wonderful wine selection. Really great service--attentive but still very relaxed and casual. The crudo was not that good but it still gets 5 stars because the pasta knocked our socks off. Also, I have to respond to someone's critique of the hazelnut cake. It's supposed to by on the dry side, and not too sweet. Thrilled that they chose our neighborhood. So excited. read more

We first visited Langhe on its second week open (earlier this summer) and we have been back 6-7 times since. We obviously love it. It is simply a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It is now a go-to spot when we have friends in from out of the area or for an impromptu date-night. Some of the highlights include: Aldo, the owner, who epitomizes what a local proprietor should be. Always warm and charming. Helpful with recommendations. And treats his regulars well... after dinner drinks, etc. The food is always solid, the drinks are interesting and the wine selection is good (staff is very helpful with selection too). We have probably had 3/4 of the menu by now and we always try something from the specials board. I have a few favorites but there have really been no big misses. Very good, top to bottom. My only minimal critique is on the portion sizes, especially with the pastas. An extra 50% in volume, even if it came with a slightly higher price, would help with sharing portions. read more

This is one of those places I so want to give a 5 star but certain things lacked so it would be more like a 4.5. The services was outstanding...so nice and accommodating which really makes me love this place and its intimate, romantic setting. Parking is also easy and free ...gotta love Logan square for dat! The food menu and wine list are super interesting offering lots of things to try...defiantly ask your server for advice on both as there are a lot of uncommon wines and ingredients which may leave you a little lost. The pacing of the food had hugely LONNGG gaps between courses which left things lingering to the point when the entrees arrived I was ready to go. This may have been in part our fault as we asked things not to come too rushed as we each ordered 3 courses but I just didn't want them to all come at once which sometimes happens when you order small plates. The vegetarian crepe was the one menu item that really stood out as a winner all other items we tried were very fresh and tastee but nothing overly impressive. With that said the positives all out way the constructive criticism and I could very well see myself adjusting this review to a 5 after my next visit. GREAT SPOT! read more

Visited for restaurant week 2019, table for 4 at 7:30 on a Thursday night. Delicious food and solid wine made for a worthwhile experience, that could have been made even better with more attentive and approachable service. Would absolutely visit again to get into more of the pastas, plin and risottos that everyone raves about. Summary: -Food: 4.5 stars -Service: 3.5 stars -Wine: 4 stars -Ambiance: 4 stars -Overall: 4 stars We were seated immediately inside a cozy dining room that packs quite a few tables into a fairly tight space, but you don't feel overly crowded at your table. The RW menu featured two options for each of the three courses, so we opted to try all six dishes and a few bottles of wine for the table. All four of us drink lots of wine, but found it very difficult to understand that menu. I guess they assume people know how to read Italian, because our server asked us as much when he appeared after we stared at the wine menu blankly for 10 minutes. His tone was immediately condescending and after telling us about the focused wine list that was "elegant" and "not California style," asked a few of us what qualities we like in wine and suggested a bottle in our price range. We would have preferred a descriptive, educational overview of the types of wines, flavor profiles, and most importantly, what pairs well with the RW week menu items, or other special menu items. Didn't get that, so it was sort of a bummer. If your thing is a "focused" wine menu, own that shit and help bring people into your world by making it approachable. Don't make them feel dumb for not knowing the geography of Northern Italy. Phew, okay...it's all uphill from here, I promise. ANTIPASTI: Cream of leek & potato, roasted sunchoke - warm soup on a chilly night was a great option and this beautifully simple app hit the spot. Nice broth consistency that starts creamy and full-bodied, then finishes with a distinctive fresh-cracked pepper bite that forces you to immediately dip your spoon back in for more. Rock shrimp tajarin, toasted garlic, grape tomato, white wine, basil - fantastic homemade pasta that is a thin spaghetti or slightly thicker angel hair, swimming in a delightfully savory sauce that is once again simple, but perfectly executed. A generous portion of rock shrimp ensure nearly every bite gets some of the goodness. You'll want to lick the bowl clean of this addictive sauce. SECONDI: Braised chuck rib, madeira, barley, mushroom, fontina, braising jus - Love me some short ribs and everything about this dish pleases the taste buds. Pull-apart tender meat and a generous portion (probably 6-8 ounces) that you'll find melts in your mouth. The perfect bite is a little raising jus, a bit of barley and a yummy little mushroom. My only wish is that there was more barley, because it provided an excellent texture and flavor that brought it all together. Wash it down with some red vino for maximum impact. Butternut squash & broccolini risotto, chili flake, parmigiano, croutons - I had super high expectations for the risotto, because everyone raves about it here. This was a excellent dish concept and I love how every ingredient complements one another - that parmigiano, plus the croutons bring a nice saltiness to SOME bites but I found the overall dish to be under-seasoned. I still very much enjoyed it - creamy, nice bites from the baby broccoli, awesome texture with the croutons, but even just a few pinches of salt and/or more chili flake would really jolt this dish to another level. I would also consider adding a little acidity to cut through the creaminess. Perhaps a lemon-infused olive oil drizzle? One other note: each dish came with a garnish of what I think are considered micro-greens. They are terribly bitter, overwhelm your palette and make anything you eat with them taste icky. I removed them after they came on the first dish. I'm probably nit-picking here, but just a heads up that pretty doesn't really equal purposeful in this case, so after you do it for the Gram, discard and enjoy the main attraction. DOLCE: Panna cotta, caramel, green apple, hazelnuts - This supremely delicate dessert brims with flavor and is the perfect, light finish to the meal. Vanilla caramel-apple bliss, highlighted by just enough crunch from the hazelnuts make you want to slow down and savor every last bite. You get sweetness from the caramel and acid from those cutely-cubed green apples, making you want another serving even though your stomach doesn't have room. Bravo. Chocolate cake, espresso ganache, vanilla gelato - if you really like chocolate and you like cake, you'll enjoy this. I personally thought it was a bit rich to pair an expresso ganache with a fuller, slightly dense chocolate cake, so it was just average to me. Vanilla gelato helps cut through it all, so that was much needed, but man, you really gotta be ready to open stomach #2 for this richness at the end of a meal. read more
