We walked in on a Friday around 6, and there was plenty of seating, but they let us know they needed the table by 7:30, which we understood. It's got a homey vibe that makes it a great place for groups! While the servers were nice, it felt like we were being rushed through our meal, with them starting to remove plates that we were still eating from, which wasn't really necessary because we finished and paid by 7:15. As for the food, we started with the bruschetta, which I think was the best part of the meal. It's incredibly garlicky, the tomatoes were bright, and the bread was crispy. For my entrée, I ordered the penne arrabiata, which was a filling portion and spicier than I expected. We ended on the tiramisu, which was subpar. Made dinner reservations and we got an amazing family style table in this really amazing, rustic looking, happy vibes place! Noise levels were on the higher end and you had to speak loudly to hear the other person across the table! José our server was friendly, attentive, and quick with his service. This is a very kid friendly place - so highly recommended for families with kids. At the same time, a great place for date night too. An extremely well priced menu, with great options is how I'd describe their menu. Our order consisted of Crostini Misti ($10.50), Calamari ($18), Funghi di Prato ($12.50) - an excellent mushroom salad, for appetizers. Mains included a very tasty (and slightly cheesy) Spinach Gnocchi ($18.50), Penne Arrabiata ($16), and Tagliatelle al Ragu ($18). Kids thoroughly enjoyed their butter pasta which they polished within a few mins! Overall, we had a great time at this place, and I can clearly see Malatesta become our go-to Italian dinner place on weekdays or weekends. And it's super affordable! - Ravioli al formaggio - Penne arrabiata While not the largest portions, both the ravioli and penne are well seasoned and the pasta itself is cooked nicely. Great food, with a lot of flavor and simple preparations of freshly made pastas, sauces and quality ingredients. We started with the bruschetta, and Burrata, which went well together. The Burrata was a perfect balance of creamy center without being watery sitting on hand sliced prosciutto, with cherry tomatoes and arugula and a light vinegarette that was sweet, light and with some fresh herbs on top. Bruschetta was lightly seasoned with fresh basil and tomato and Olive oil that makes Italian foods simplicity its strength. We had the spinach gnocchi and gnocchi patate, with tomato sauce, and the Penne arribiata which were all excellent. Stopped here after a splitting a bottle of wine with a date at christopher street pier. This place was close by and we were hungry therefore it was perfect! It was a Monday evening, sometime between 9-10pm. They brought bread over pretty quickly, and theres olive oil and balsamic on the table. My date and I had a glass of wine each, and shared the tagiatelle with meat ragu and spinach gnocchi w/ gorgonzola sauce. Both were delicious and hit the spot. The total was ~$60! But for a nice casual lunch it's great. - Bruschetta: Cut into 4 pieces. I usually don't get bruschetta but this was really nice and refreshing with the basil, tomatoes, and light seasoning. - Grilled calamari: Excellent! I really enjoyed this, the calamari had a nice light char to it and was well cooked. Served on a bed of lettuce. - Tagliatelle Ragú: We enjoyed this for the meat sauce. Great pasta as well - Spinach Gnocchi: Comes with a cheesy cream based sauce that slightly tasted like blue cheese. The gnocchi were soft and paired well with the cream. I'm not a huge fan of gnocchi but this is one of their more popular dishes. They have several specials but I don't think they serve it at lunch? The menu is extremely veggie friendly. So many options and the service was great. Our server kept running into my chair, which was a bit annoying. Found this place when looking for an Italian spot on the west side and i'm so glad I went! It's a cute little casual restaurant that's great for a date night or a dinner with friends. We got the tagliatelle ragu ($17) and spaghetti chitarra ($16). They both tasted very fresh and the noodles were cooked to perfection. I did wish both dishes were seasoned a little bit more as it was more on the bland side, but it still tasted fine. I would personally get the tagliatelle again over the spaghetti as it had more depth to it. I felt the service was pretty quick and the waiters were decently attentive. However, there was one waiter who consistently seemed very annoyed from the second he interacted with us all the way to the end, but it could have been an off day. Known for their seasonal specials, homemade pasta & simple decor - I can see why many tables began to fill at an early time (6PM). The atmosphere is calm, authentic, and historic with picturesque tables / chairs plus classic wall art even across the outdoor seating area. The food is spot-on and quite affordable. They have a range of "piadine" dishes - traditionally thin, good tasting crust sandwiches that are traditionally from the Roman cuisine of Italy (ranging from $9-11). A couple salads are present including a basic mixed salad for less than $10 and, apparently, very authentic "al dente" cooked pasta including spinach gnocchi (that's not easy to find). The staff were very friendly, capable of speaking Italian and making anyone feel comfortable. I came with my 7 month old (and puppy) in a stroller and never once felt awkward sitting at an outdoor table without a reservation. This has been my favorite Italian restaurant and go to spot since they opened back in 2009 and I will never go back again because of the way I was treated the last time we got there at 4:30. They don't open till five they wouldn't even let us sit at the bar or have a drink outside. I wanna know where the owner was where he's turning customers away a half hour early an not letting customers even sit outside. Does the owner know this? The prices were reasonable and the overall experience was great with super friendly staff. There is only wine on the menu for drinks, but you can get glasses, carafes and bottles. The food menu is great with a set of daily specials. With our group of 4, we got a few appetizers and also chose the spinach gnocchi as an app to share (!!!) and it was amazing!! The restaurant was dimly lit, and the tables are small which makes it perfect for something like a date. We showed up at around 9ish and ended up waiting for a table, but our wait was not long at all! The staff were quick to serve us, everyone was friendly and efficient. We ordered the Crostini and Caprese salad for apps, both were fresh and delicious. For our mains, we went with the ravioli formaggio and tagliatelle ragu. I am so impressed with the flavor of these dishes! The portion size is small in comparison to other restaurants, but it was the perfect amount for me. We of course had to try some dessert. The pannacotta was amazing, creamy and topped with beautiful fresh berries which paired perfectly with the airy flavor of the sweet cream. The tiramisu was also incredible.
