I know this is an Italian restaurant, but dining here made me feel like I was in Spain again. Maybe it's the bar seating. Maybe it's the drinks. Or it could be the black pig dish, which I often heard whispers of when I summered in Seville. But I digress. You want to know about the food, and I can tell you with confidence that it ranks as one of my tops. My drink, the cherry cocktail, is my favorite of all time. As someone who doesn't enjoy the taste of alcohol and adores a sweet drink, this was perfect. Plus, it came with three - three! - maraschino cherries. I ordered the carbonara as my main dish, but it paled in comparison to the vegetable-focused mains. It's cooked al dente, which isn't my favorite and a tad too salty. The cauliflower and black pig were the stars of the show. The cauliflower was tender, the chili sauce a nice touch, and the pine nuts a wonderful crunch. The black pig was delicious. We started with Burrata with semi-dried tomatoes. The tomatoes have a hint of sweetness that matches well with the Burrata. We also got the Prosciutto di Langhirano. Really delicious matching with the focaccia bread. We like the bread so much that we got an order of it with olive oil. We got the Amatriciana, Carbonara, Gricia, and Roman Meatballs for lunch. Roscioli is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I first went there a couple of times in Rome, and I was ecstatic when they announced an NYC location! The carbonara is a true wow moment for me, but all of the Roman classics are truly perfect. The ingredients are the highest quality, and the pasta is cooked al dente. The descriptions seem simple, but that's how it should be - it's all you need for flavor. On my latest visit, I also tried the Burro e parmigiano "Francescana" from the Modern Classics side of the pasta menu. Seemingly so simple, and so delicious. For a table of 4, we also got the prosciutto and focaccia, the burrata topped with semi-dried tomatoes, the scarola alla napoletana and the secreto ibérico de bellota (a standout for sure!I've rarely had pork so tender and packed with flavor). We finished with a tiramisu, which was especially creamy and one of the best I've had. Roscioli sources ingredients selectively, and I believe that we are getting the best they can find. The food is so delicious, it really speaks for itself! Everything tastes fresh and delicious. There is a purpose for every ingredient on the plate. The restaurant itself is pretty small, and they make the most of the space. The tables are close together, and it can get loud when it's packed. Service is attentive but not speedy, so I recommend going if you don't have a tight time constraint. I've never been seated before my reservation time - arrived early twice and never again. It's a worthwhile treat meal. Our bill for 4 people with all of the above and 1 espresso, no other drinks, ended up at about $75 per person including tax and tip. Really enjoyed our dinner at Roscioli. We booked right when reservations opened a month out and the only slot we could get was 5:30pm on a Sunday, so we ate light all day and showed up ready to eat. Every dish delivered. We started with the burrata with prosciutto and the sautéed escarole salad, then shared the Amatriciana and carbonara pastas along with the Iberico pork steak. Finished with tiramisu for dessert. For three people sharing, the portions felt just right. Service was friendly, efficient, and the pacing between courses was spot on. We were seated downstairs (basement level), which we actually preferred--it was quieter and felt a bit more relaxed. Came here on a Wednesday and it was fairly busy for the Roman Feast. If you're there for the tasting menu you head downstairs. The space is medium sized with a good amount of tables for 4. I sat with my friend at a booth. We tried the classic wine pairing with it and it def enhanced the experience. They also have an additional 2 dishes that are specials if you want to try additional seasonal items but the general tasting menu is a lot. Def come hungry! I felt like everything was prepared well. This is a tiny restaurant and the max rsvp is 5 people. They have seating at the street level and then additional seats in the lower level for the prixe fixe. We sat literally next to the entrance. It was a very uncomfortable seating arrangement for 5 people. Luckily we were able to squeeze onto the bench since our 5th person was a kid. We ordered the Cheese Monger's choice board for $34. It had three different types of cheeses, four thin slices of two, and a little bit of a soft cheese. They were all pretty mild and crowd pleasing. No funky ones. It came with some honey, but no bread. We also ordered the sun-dried tomato burrata for $24. It came with NO bread. We had to order bread separately for $8. The bread was hard, stale and tasted like it was pre-cut for dinner service. Very disappointed with the amount of food and quality vs. cost. The cacio e pepe - it was gummy as other reviewers noted. It should be smooth and warm when served. It was cold. The amatriciana was not notable. We also ordered the fish (PESCE E FAGIOLI ZOLFINI), which was also not notable. Had such a great experience doing 'THE ROMAN FEAST' at Roscioli. Roman Feast: $95 (no beverage) + $55 (Standard wine pairing add-on) before tax and tip. This included five courses with five wine pairings. The food was absolutely amazing! Like most pre-fixe, you never think the portions they serve will be enough, but trust me when I say we left absolutely stuffed! If you see more than 5 courses it is also because they did throw in a few extra breads and cheeses. The experience was great too. Our waitress was so amicable and knowledgeable about the foods and wines that were being served. The place is cute. Upstairs seems a bit more casual but still elegant if that makes sense. I stopped by for a weekday lunch by myself - they were pretty busy (even around 2pm) but I was able to get seated at the bar without much of a wait. I had the supplì al telefono to start - really delicious! The breading was great -- not too crispy/oily -- and complemented the delicious inside filling (rice, beef, mozzarella) wonderfully. Definitely would recommend this as an appetiser. For pasta I had the spaghettoni alla carbonara (which I think is their speciality)? The most notable part is that the sauce is very "Roman", i.e. they don't add cream to it, so the mixture of just egg and cheese is much thicker/creamier and saltier. I think it was really too rich/heavy - by the end of the dish it felt like every bite was overwhelming :( The guanciale was nice -- I liked the bold, savoury flavour -- but definitely contributed to the overall feeling of saltiness throughout. Other than that, I have to say the pasta was cooked perfectly (al dente), which I appreciated. Restaurant interior was lovely -- feels very intimate and "home-y" -- and service was kind, attentive, and very prompt. Price point is a little high but it's not too bad for a splurge (esp by NYC standards). Terrible. I was so disappointed. The service was marginal at best. Waiter made a mistake thinking I wanted a huge block of cheese. Tasting menu review: I don't know what Roscioli in Rome is doing, but its New York sibling isn't trying very hard. This was the blandest, most boring tasting menu I've ever had the misfortune of spending money on, and I'm annoyed I came. In a nutshell: The tasting menu food is too traditional to be interesting, and too mediocre to do justice to tradition. So what you're left with are dishes of overpriced cliches. - Complimentary mortadella sandwich: This was fine, but nothing I would've spent money on, so I appreciated that it was free. - Burrata Pomodori with Fried Artichoke: I guess they source their burrata from Italy, but given that it's dairy and local dairy is always fresher/healthier than imported dairy, I don't think that's something worth bragging about. This burrata was fine, if a bit too runny, and the fried artichoke hearts were forgettable. - Sicilian Red Prawns, Ossetra Caviar, Pane Carasau: We decided to fork over an extra $32 to try this upgrade. It was literally one prawn, cut in half, with caviar on top. About one spot higher than Coqodaq's $35 single chicken nugget on my list of "Single food items I've wasted money on". - Lasagna Modenese: Delicious and hearty. I wish every course had just been like this. - Mezze Maniche alla Pomodoro: Basically rigatoni in watery tomato sauce, but I guess if you slap on fancy Italian names, people will think it's more exotic than it is. Repeat after me: rigatoni in watery tomato sauce. And not even cooked well. - Misticanza + Roasted Squash / Short Rib: Basically, salad with your choice of main. The salad was just typical packaged greens made limp from dressing. We opted to get both main options to try more things. The squash was tiny, too sweet and barely seasoned with anything. The short rib was equally tiny, though cooked better than the squash. And this is their main course? - Complimentary parmigiana with aged balsamic vinegar: A nice thought, but I can't eat that much parmesan, and the balsamic vinegar tasted like port. Not my bag. - Tiramisu: Really? Tiramisu for dessert? I get it, it's an Italian classic. But this is one of those desserts that's so overdone, it's an eye-rolling cliche for me. So I rolled my eyes over to their alternative dessert , a blood orange / grapefruit sorbet, which was mildly better. Service was friendly, but our courses came out very inconsistently, with long waits after the first two dishes, leading us to spend far more time at the restaurant than we wanted. Love the vibe here - everything is super well designed and it has an upscale casual feel. The appetizers were great - the suppli was perfect and the jamon was some of the best I've had. I really had high hopes for this place but was pretty disappointed during my last visit. I made a reservation for the last round of lunch service on a Saturday. The place was packed and after checking in with the host, I was waiting awkwardly by the door for what was 20-25 min before being seated at the bar seating in front of the kitchen. After ordering, it felt like eons for my food to come out. I nearly finished the entire bread basket by myself (which was actually good) while waiting. Sitting by the kitchen, I could tell the service staff was visibly overwhelmed/stressed and the kitchen was busy. I don't think it's my place to make assumptions but the prix fixe lunch menu seemed to put a huge burden on the kitchen and appeared to be what most people in the room were there for. My reservation unfortunately was for the a la carte menu. Make sure to note this when making a booking for lunch! My carbonara felt like the last thing the kitchen made before barreling into prepping for dinner service. The carbonara was not that great surprisingly. The sauce was gummy/not velvety and the flavor was one-dimensional. I will say that the suppli and the tiramisu were quite good. The tiramisu was genuinely one of the best I've ever had but unfortunately not good enough of an excuse to return. The atmosphere is nice, and our server was helpful. The menu was not authentic Roman food, just a few of the pastas. We had: - Artichokes - very good, we opted to not have them fried. - Carbonara - good but extremely heavy. The guanciale was overcooked. - Amatriciana - tasty but again the guanciale was overcooked. - Bread - the pizza bread was ice cold. I was so glad to get a reservation the week of Thanksgiving for the a la carte dining. The space is very intimate and the tables toward the back where we were seated were quite close together. It would be difficult to maneuver if you had a lot of bags or a larger coat. We started with the Crudo and the anchovy burrata. We've never had crude like this, there wasn't much sauce like in asian style dishes of this type but there was a decent amount of spice. We also shared the Carbonara and the meatballs. I appreciate an al dente pasta but this was almost too al dente for my liking, however, this is just my person al preference. The meatballs were good, I don't necessarily enjoy polenta though. Feel so grateful to have gotten an A La Carte reservation at Roscioli. Heads up, you book through Resy, the restaurant requires a $2.50 non-refundable deposit per person upon reserving. I managed to grab a 5PM reservation at opening and had to line up to get seated. The interior is super cozy and inviting. It feels like you're eating in a fine grocery. You can buy items at Roscioli - including olive oil, prosciutto, sauces, etc! We ordered the burrata with sundried tomatoes, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, meatballs chicken and tiramisu. To start though, they bring out complimentary bread and olive oil. The cappelli olive oil was high-quality and had a grassiness to it. Burrata was super fresh. Tasted even better with bread. Cacio e pepe was so light and creamy. Amatriciana had amazing pockets of guanciale and the sauce was nice and bright. Meatballs are the only thing I thought were OK, they came with polenta. And last but not least, don't forget to get the tiramisu. It is absolutely DIVINE. The best tiramisu I've ever had. Comes with this delicious dark chocolate situation - yum. I was so excited to go to Roscioli based on the reviews but unfortunately it did not meet my expectations. I got a 7 pm reservation on a Saturday for my birthday. I'm not sure if it was a technical issue with their seating chart app but my group and a few others had to wait 15 minutes to be seated, which was fine given how small the restaurant was. Once seated, we ordered the bread with olive oil and the suppli. Both were delicious and I really liked the Tuscan olive oil that came with the bread. Unfortunately the rest of the night took a wrong turn. We ordered a bottle of red wine and a server came and presented us with the bottle and then walked away and didn't pour anything. We eventually got served but I'm not sure if it was a staff mixup but we found that odd. For entrees, we ordered the cacio e Pepe and amatriciana. Both pastas were very al dente and hard to chew. TLDR: If you've ever wondered what the food in Rome tastes like - Roscioli is it. They started as a salumeria in Rome, so try some of the salumi. Definitely get the Roman classics. Pasta Burro e Parmigiano, Amatriciana, Carbonara are our favorites. Do not forget the tiramisu. I've eaten at Roscioli a number of times now. If you want the full menu, dinner is when you should go. Lunch is a smaller menu but they do a $55 pre-fixe which is actually priced very well and it is filling. They rotate their apps seasonally but if you're their for dinner, definitely try the prosciutto and their burrata. The prosciutto (being a salumeria) is a cut above the rest. The burrata is incredibly creamy as you'd expect. We really liked the one with the crispy artichokes and zucchini. For pastas, the butter and parmigiano pasta started as a special but it's on the menu permanently now. They use a mixture of three different aged parms and French butter. The Amatriciana is my favorite of the staple Roman pastas, the Carbonara is a close second. Definitely get the tiramisu. Their other dishes are also very good too but if you've managed to snag a reservation and it's your first time - stick with the classic items. read more

The bread and the cheeses and salami's were delicious. Everything was downhill from there. The fried artichokes tasted like they came out of a jar. The pasta, itself, was al dente; however, our table tried four of the pastas, and the only one that was passable was the carbonara. All of the sauces felt like they had been sitting around for days, totally overcooked and the added guanchale was very salty and dry. It had definitely been pre-cooked as we suspect everything else had been. This was not the experience we had in Rome, which was wonderful. Roscioli has always been a great special occasion spot for us. We used to do the downstairs tasting menu. The ambiance was great, the food was great, and we appreciated all the details the servers put into the dishes. Fast forward to our most recent visit. They no longer offer downstairs reserved seating for the tasting menu. Booking the reservations when available landed us a spot at a cramped counter. The overall upstairs is loud and the layout is poorly thought out. The à la carte food was fine. Classic Roman dishes well executed. However without the pace, ambiance and thought associated with the downstairs tasting experience this has become an average overpriced meal without any charm to bring us back amongst the sea of NYC Italian options. They also obnoxiously threw in a credit card surcharge at the end. After coming for years the change in experience likely means this will be our last time dining there. The pastas and salads and wine glasses demand that much of you, you rascal-ioli! The salad of the day is sumptuous, a sort of Caesar with mint and other leaves! Yummy. And some type of 40-year-old parm. Alright! Then we had the pasta of the day, which was a zucchini pasta. Delish even if the zucchini themselves were few and far between. Attentive wait staff. But listen, as my friend said, it feels like you're sitting in a grocery store. But I think you'll like it. One of the great things about living in New York is that you have so many restaurants at your fingertips, especially Italian restaurants. The downside is that, having so many choices, your standards are higher. I first learned of Roscioli's existence in 2018 through its Rome location, when I was bummed that I couldn't score a reservation when I visited Italy. So I was pretty excited when I heard that Roscioli was coming to New York. The food here is...fine. There are hyped restaurants where the food matches (or exceeds) expectations; there are hyped restaurants where the food fails to live up to expectations. At Roscioli, it's solidly in the middle. The food is decent, but it's not mind-blowing. Service is very friendly. The space is tight (in a cozy way). The bread and olive oil was good, and the almond torte for dessert is a solid way to end the meal. read more
