Had a wonderful dinner on Sunday, 12/1/24. I've worked in customer service for over 27 years and have a high standard when going to a new business. I was super impressed and not only did I enjoy the food and care by the chef, the waiters and other staff at the restaurant, I also noticed many smiling faces as we went from the restaurant to the hallways and through the elevator to get to the front desk. I enjoyed a delightful dinner along the Riverwalk at Ostra. I was looking for a restaurant with seafood that broke from the tourist-friendly Tex-mex that abounds the Riverwalk. My tuna tacos were good with toro in tiny soft shells with just the right about of accoutrements- light and delicious. I also enjoyed a side of brussel sprouts with bacon. The whiskey list was decent, including a lot of international and American whiskeys to choose from. Very nice dinner. read more

I came to try the food...the mahi-mahi was delicious but was missing the mango in the salsa. The Makara Martini was excellent ! Rebekah was the server and she was super friendly, accommodating and made wonderful food choice suggestions, excellent customer service. The first Martini was like something you would love after a day at the spa. Rebekah said it would be refreshing and it was! I got a second to make sure quality was consistent, it did not disappoint. Ostra is a little walk from the convention center but certainly a nice treat on the river walk for first timers. I was in San Antonio for a wedding and decided to venture out. I came across the touristy area in downtown called River Walk. There's plenty of restaurants but reviews aren't great. I found this little gem. My boyfriend and I were greeted and sat outside overlooking the river. It was a cute spot on a chilly night but they had the outdoor heaters on so it felt cozy. Our waiter was from Louisiana and he was very kind and explained the menu as well as the different oysters offered. He was very attentive. The oysters were delicious and they came with a variety of sauces. We also ordered the octopus/chorizo. I recommend that as well! I ordered a beer and my boyfriend ordered 2 double black on the rocks. Unfortunately we should have asked for the price on the double blacks as two of those drinks cost $62. Pretty pricey. Also we ordered tuna tacos but they never arrived. Good thing it didn't because we were pretty full. All in all it was a good experience and would recommend this place to others. read more

This place really surprised me since it's located inside a hotel but conveniently placed on the Riverwalk. I came during restaurant week and my salmon was sooooo delicious. I could have done without the pea purée underneath it but the salmon was cooked to perfection. The seafood gumbo was surprisingly delicious as well. As part of the restaurant week promotion my meal came with a choice of desert which I picked the goat cheesecake which was very tasty not too sweet but not too different from the classic cheesecake since it was goat cheesecake. My margarita was tasty as well!!! Service was impeccable too! I'm so glad I got the opportunity to try this restaurant out because to be honest I probably wouldn't have since it really doesn't catch your eye on the Riverwalk. I had no idea what I was up for, prior to coming here. I didn't do any research. I came here blindly because my travel buddies had made reservations. Since we had a YSB event for Haunted Ghost Tour around the area, they had planned to dine here and walk over. I ordered light because of all the eating from other events prior I was full still... I got the Gumbo and a glass of Red wine since it was still happy hour! Our waiter was very informative. The gumbo was good. We shared a dozen oyster and cones with 3 different sauces and these cute little tobasco bottles. Oyster were fresh. We then got dessert! I had to! Pinna Cotta caught my eye so we ordered 2 and shared! I was told mine was more firm in texture compared to the other slice hmmmm... None the less it was still good! While in SATX, we made a reservation through Open Table to dine at Ostra. Several considerations were made when I made the reservation but primarily, it was our desire to eat seafood...Ostra means "oyster" doesn't it? Ostra is located along the San Antonio Riverwalk level in the Mokara Hotel. Getting a reservation is recommended as this restaurant gets very crowded. During the warmer months, you should request a table outside along the Riverwalk. Upon approach, we were pleased to see the beautiful and contemporary décor (both interior and exterior), large well-stocked wine cellar and bar, and a multitude of friendly wait staff. We were seated immediately and our server, Genaro, came up to us right away. He stated that it was still Happy Hour, although it was ending in about a half-hour so we quickly looked through their beverage selections. I think my appetite was still on Hawaii Standard Time as I was needing a drink and felt ravenous. Along with our beverages (house red and white wines and beer), we placed an order for a dozen oysters (Canadian and Gulf) which was served with mignonette, chimichurri and chipotle cocktail sauce. While drinking our HH selections and slurping down our oysters, we placed our orders. Knowing that we were scheduled to take a YSB (Yelp Spring Break) Ghost Tour, we chose to eat "light". Both my husband and fellow traveler ordered the seafood gumbo while I ordered the Alaskan halibut special. The portions were fair and the flavors were on point. All of our dishes were prepared well...my halibut special was meaty and mild tasting. Both my husband and fellow Yelper ordered the gumbo which was rich, tasty and chock full of seafood/shellfish. If you are looking for authentic seafood look no further. Ostra is fine dining at its best and lies on the famous San Antonio river walk. The moment I walked in I was greeted and felt very welcome. The service is exceptional and the food is exquisite. I ordered a delicious hot green tea and the full oyster platter and I was in for a surprise. The oyster presentation is great, Chef really knows how to make a first impression. The Louisiana oysters were delicious and fresh. They are tasty and prepared very well for you to enjoy. Yum! The ceviche is another dish I recommend. It's tasty, fresh and well prepared. The orange chips are great, however, I would definitely look into using harder chips because they tend to break easily. Very tasty though. The atmosphere is fantastic and very happy with my visit overall. Servers are friendly and like how they also suggest dishes to us. The place is very nice inside, but the food is mediocre to say the least and overpriced. We ordered Tuna tacos- they were really good, but crispy calamari- the huge part of the bowl was cabbage in the bottom, the calamari were ok until we started finding fried batter without any calamari inside. Then we returned it and asked do not charge. Wild mushroom linguine was ok, but we asked to add shrimp and got 3 shrimps and the price jumped to $25 - totally not worth it. Tuna melt was ok, but not worth $15. read more

Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning. We got here around 10:45am. The menu had some very good options. They have all farm fresh eggs here. They have a beautiful mimosa bar and blood Mary bar! After having a few disappointing spots on the Riverwalk , this spot was definitely worth it for us! It's right off the Riverwalk with outside and inside seating. My husband and I started with the Calamari which was great. Having the Thai sauce on it was different than what we are use to but was good. The calamari was definitely fresh and a great crisp to it. The filet mignon was cooked perfect for me. (Medium on the inside and chard on the outside) along with a side of shrimp that were delicious . The mash and broccoli was delicious as well. My husband ordered the smoked salmon which he loved! He rated it a 5 out of 5. The salmon was cooked perfect. Not dry at all but moist with sweet potato purée and huckleberry jus. Following dinner we tried the cheesecake. By far one of my favorite cheesecakes! Ordered four alcoholic drinks, two dinners, an appetizer, and cheesecake and it was all under $150! My wife and I recently traveled to San Antonio for leisure and were met with the dilemma of what to eat downtown. A young woman suggested we try this restaurant, so we did. When I tell you that the service provided by Gilbert was unparalleled, I mean it. His friendly attitude and helpful suggestions made for a wonderful, filling evening. The food was delicious. I had the misfortune of dining here while on a business trip to San Antonio. It started well with our drinks coming out quickly, but went rapidly downhill after that. We waited an hour and 10 minutes for our food to arrive. Other tables around us were getting theirs (one table even got their apps delivered twice!), but not us. Twice we were told our food was coming shortly, but at no point were we offered anything - nobody filled our water glasses and we had to ask for extra bread because we were so hungry. When we finished the drinks we had ordered to eat with our dinner after an hour of waiting, I asked if, at the very least, they could comp us a new drink each but they flat out refused saying they "couldn't do that" but could offer us a free dessert. When the food finally did arrive, nobody asked us how the food was - which worked out well for them because my food was freezing cold, one of the other dining party had tepid food, and the third had a cauliflower "steak" that was nothing more than a hunk of steamed, tasteless cauliflower with pesto on top. To make it worse, two of the dishes were over $40 a plate. When we finally got the bill (still with nothing comped), we complained so bitterly to the waiter that he spoke to his manager and we finally got 25% off. Never once did the manager apologize, speak to us directly, or try to do anything proactively to make up for the lousy experience we had. DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! read more

Being that Mokara charges $350 for a one-night stay, you would assume its property restaurant would provide an equally or above par dining experience. CONS: Snooty hostess (no smile, no welcome, borderline rude) Poor service Average food Below average Gumbo High prices for value We were seated indoors at a table with a view of the kitchen door and cold air from a vent blasting down on our heads. No bueno. So we asked to sit outside. It took 15 minutes to set up the table. After our salads and soup arrived we noticed that the Gumbo that I ordered for my son was served without a spoon. I gave my son my spoon so he could eat and we waited for the waitress to stop by to ask for another spoon. We waited for 25 minutes until the waitress came by. Ugh! Unacceptable. By then, we had lots of empty wine and water glasses. Dirty dishes sitting around but worse of all, the Gumbo that was going to be my son's meal was terrible. The "Gumbo" looked like a black bean watery soup. You could practically drink it. Shameful to call it "Gumbo". Get a new recipe and fix this hot mess! The bread basket was dropped off after her 25 minute stop (which was after the soup and salads). There was no explanation as to why it took so long to get a bread basket. They should benchmark Cheesecake Factory where they bring you out a fresh yummy basket of two kinds of bread-RIGHT AFTER YOU ORDER YOUR MEAL! Duh! She took the $10 tiny bowl of "gumbo" off the bill but the fact that my son had to sit and eat off of our plates because there was no waitress in sight to ask for an alternative is ridiculous. Overall recommendations: For the restaurant, get a new chef! R e-train or fire your wait staff. For the consumer. Go somewhere else until they get their act together. I'm so annoyed by this restaurant that it's a chore just to write this review. There are so many better dining options in San Antonio. Very delicious! We decided to come here it was a last minute decision, we don't regret it! I don't remember the plate I ordered but it was some kind of fish over pasta and it was amazing! I had it with ham (salmon was an option) and the usual veggie filing and swiss cheese. I felt overall it was uninspiring. The eggs were a little overcooked so the omelette was dry. The vegetables were not well incorporated into the eggs. The juice, at $5 a glass, was not fresh squeezed. I did not order breakfast potatoes which are extra. Toast came with it. Service was professional but not terribly attentive. We were never asked how our meal was. With the other choices available downtown, we will probably not make a return here for breakfast. read more

Came here on the Sunday before labor day for a little breakfast. I ended up getting the waffle which was very spongy and a little chewy. The flavor was good, however I feel it could have been prepared so much better. The Mrs had the avocado toast. She said it was pretty good but the toast was super thick which was super filling so she had to set some of the toast aside in order to not get so full on bread. The service from our server Mia was amazing, but before that we had to deal with Rachel and Katherine who got snotty on us when we asked if we could sit outside instead of inside. The outdoor seating is wonderful, great views, and great weather. However the tables that are outside have cracks in them and there is all kinds of dirt and filth in the cracks. It is a little further down from the main touristy section of the riverwalk, so it felt a little better during covid.
