It's always an exciting day when I get to try a new sushi spot. We got takeout and got to try a variety of rolls: baked salmon, rainbow. California. I really liked the baked salmon roll. The salmon was thick and juicy. The rainbow roll was ok, I would have liked more fish on the top and a little less avocado. This night we ordered to go their Salmon Nigiri Rolls and Spicy Tuna Hand-rolls. First time trying their Spicy Tuna Hand-rolls which was amazing. The Salmon Nigiri can never go wrong. This review is not for the sushi. I came here on a Monday during lunch to take advantage of their lunch special. They have $15 Bento Box lunch specials Monday thru Friday, but Monday is the best bargain as it's Korean BBQ short ribs which is normally $24. The Salmon Kama (collar) on Thrusday might also be a good deal as its not offered on the normal menu. The bento comes with miso soup, salad, rice and mixed temupra. The meal is a good amount, not too much or too little. The salad is rather plain, the tempura is pretty good 1 piece of shrimp and some vegetables. There were 5 pieces of kalbi ribs, it also came with a side kochujang sauce which added a spicy kick if you wanted but i thought it was not necessary. The ribs were sweet, tender and lightly charred, it came on a bed of charred onions which added a nice sweetness when eaten together. The space is very nice and clean, much more fancy than what i imagined from the outside. There is seating both inside and out. Service was friendly and attentive. Right next to Mr. Fish n Chips in the strip mall. Parking can be a nightmare, its ok to walk! Great hip spot for affordable sushi and lots of options. We sat at the sushi chef bar and most unfortunately they don't do any extra services or chat with you....in our previous experiences at other sushi places it is custom to chat with customers and get the extra salad/chefs choice and the experience. This is where I knocked off the star . Service was extremely slow and not very engaging ir relatable and not attentive for being a full service restaurant. We never got checked in on, waters were empty and no one seemed to notice our hand raised up to ask. This is the 2nd star knocked off. The sushi was ok, not the best we've ever had, but it matched the prices they charge for fresh fish. The restaurant has plenty of room to entertain staff, large groups and a hip spot to have lunch o your break if you're near by. They have a full bar which is also lovely and play great music to serve the atmosphere. They have 2 TVs to keep up with the news and sports. Outdoor seating is nice however transient can be a bit awkward for those eating and they tend to stand there, however observed security is seemed pretty quick about moving them along. It's a really good sushi restaurant, it's almost the same quality as sushi ota but affordable. I really enjoyed the combo sashimi platter, it was very fresh, fatty and delicious. The wasabi would kick-your-butt, it is very strong and deep in flavor. That's the strongest wasabi I've had in a really long time. We'll be coming back here for sure.... Food is fairly priced for today's prices, about $16 per roll. We got the lemon& salmon and rainbow this time, along with warm garlicky spicy edamame. It was a Monday night and I think they just had one server for the whole place. You could tell he was tired or didn't like his good, but still checked on us as expected. This is not the best sushi spot but it is a spot if you need to scratch that sushi craving. We ordered the agedashi tofu and chicken karaage to start. The tofu and fried chicken were not too greasy and seasoned just right. The salmon sashimi had a little of the brown fat left on but that didn't impact the flavor. My daughter's favorite sushi place! She loves the high top tables, the miso soup and the salmon nigiri. The service is usually pretty good for how busy they get. You can eat inside at the tables, the sushi bar, or they have a patio out front. We've been everywhere and there really isn't a bad seat. Their shishito peppers are definitely my favorite out of all sushi places ive been. They sautee their shishito peppers really well and the garlic sauce they use for it is super tasty. The staff is super friendly and the restaurant always feels clean inside and out. Ive been here a number of times but recently felt compelled to write this review after my last visit. Plenty of times we tried to get the waiters and waitresses attention by making eye contact but it seemed as if they avoided us. After a decade in business at the Balboa Mesa Shopping Center, it's nice to see that Ototo Sushi Co is still holding up as a fast casual option for a sushi fix. It has been several years since I last visited so I don't recall much from the last time I ate here. They still have a front patio area for outdoor seating to supplement the capacity of the main dining room. I do know that parking in the shared lot has become more difficult with the emergence of several newer businesses on the same side of the plaza (e.g. boba tea shop, cookie store, hot pot restaurant). The place was mostly empty when I arrived for an early dinner. The menu seemed to have more small plates and non-sushi choices than I remembered. One side of the menu was dedicated to rolls... hand, classic, and specials. I picked a Spicy Scallop Hand Roll, Balboa Roll, and Spider Roll on this occasion. Radish sprouts and gobo were toppings to the pieces of scallop inside a seaweed wrapping. The scallop spiciness was rather mild. The Balboa Roll had spicy tuna, gobo, and cucumber on the inside topped with salmon, cilantro, avocado, ponzu sauce, and sesame seeds. It was cut into eight pieces and was the only special roll that did not contain imitation krab which was why I chose it because I was already getting that in my last item. The six-piece Spider Roll was my favorite of the evening. Soft shell crab, imitation krab, avocado, sesame seeds, and sprouts were wrapped in soy paper and topped with seaweed and eel sauce. The sweetness of the sauce made this taste like a dessert to finish my meal. The prices seemed very reasonable compared to what some Japanese spots now charge for maki rolls. On the quality side, I felt the seafood and other ingredients were middle of the road average. My rating for Ototo Sushi Co fell somewhere between three and four stars. read more

Something about summer time warm weather makes sushi the perfect meal! OToto does not disappoint. We've loved each time we've eaten at here, the food has been delicious. Love that there are many vegan options including tofu dishes. It's in a super convenient shopping center, so it's easy to stop by when you're already out running errands. There's a Vons, UPS, Crumbl, nail places, across the street from target etc. The sushi is always fresh, and you can watch them make it, which the kids think is really fun. It's definitely kid-friendly overall, but seating is a bit limited, so you'll want to give yourself some time, especially during peak hours -- it fills up fast. I might have got lucky with the sushi rolls I ordered, but I'm going to be honest and say it was my favorite sushi that I have had here in San Diego! I especially loved the Billy roll! The interior was cute and casual with lots of seating. Since we were a walk-in, they did not have seating inside, but we were seated right away outside where there were plenty of seating. What we got: - Seaweed salad: after having their seaweed salad, I am convinced that I must have it whenever I get sushi. It was fresh, delicious, and the sauce was perfect! - Furikake fries: crunchy and yummy! - Scallop dynamite roll: baked krab and avocado roll topped with scallop, creamy crab sauce, green onions, eel sauce, tobiko, sesame seeds (inside) krab, avocado (taken from online menu) -- this roll was really good! the inside was creamy, the scallops were delicious; definitely recommend this roll! My litmus test for any sushi place is their spicy tuna roll and chicken karaage. Virtually impossible to mess up; yet, lo and behold: they have accomplished the impossible. I ordered to-go and was told that my food would be out in 15 minutes. It was closer to 25 so at this point, I was starving. I ended up just eating it in my car because I was so hungry. The chicken karaage portion was tiny for what I paid for it. $11 for a handful of small popcorn chicken like pieces was pretty disappointing. The skin was separating from the meat and had a soggy texture. It was not seasoned at all either, even the sauce hardly helped. The spicy tuna roll tasted overwhelmingly of rice and cucumber. I could barely get a taste of the tuna and even that had a weak taste profile. The only nice thing I could really say was that the place looked clean, the staff was friendly, and the lemon slice and ginger that came along with the food was fresh. For $18, my hunger was solved but it felt like such a waste of calories. I only gave this place a try because it was nearby but if you want to have some good sushi, go somewhere else. read more

Last time my to go order was left unrefrigerated for an hour even after requesting to keep cold since it would not be picked up immediately & attached is what I received today - combo sashimi which is eighteen dollars. You can clearly tell that several pieces were meant to top rolls due to slicing thin. While employees are pleasant, I wouldn't expect quality issues if paying this much for a mid week lunch when not busy. Maybe because they're to go order they think it wouldn't matter?
