    Okonomi Hand Roll

I am extremely happy with my experience here! I always notice how happy everyone dining looks when I pass by, now I can see why! The staff is friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is contemporary yet laid back, and the food is fresh, fast, and delicious!! The Okonomi hand roll with Yellow Tail was so superb I had to try the yellow tail belly nigiri next. I was also very happy with the Salmon Kama! The prices are reasonable and this feels like it could be your local go to sushi on any night of the week!!

This review is not for the sushi. I came here on a Monday during lunch to take advantage of their lunch special. They have $15 Bento Box lunch specials Monday thru Friday, but Monday is the best bargain as it's Korean BBQ short ribs which is normally $24. The Salmon Kama (collar) on Thrusday might also be a good deal as its not offered on the normal menu. The bento comes with miso soup, salad, rice and mixed temupra. The meal is a good amount, not too much or too little. The salad is rather plain, the tempura is pretty good 1 piece of shrimp and some vegetables. There were 5 pieces of kalbi ribs, it also came with a side kochujang sauce which added a spicy kick if you wanted but i thought it was not necessary. The ribs were sweet, tender and lightly charred, it came on a bed of charred onions which added a nice sweetness when eaten together. The space is very nice and clean, much more fancy than what i imagined from the outside. There is seating both inside and out. Service was friendly and attentive. They are located in the shopping center with Vons and CVS on Balboa and Genesee so theres lots of parking.

Hands down the food here is great. If you don't feel like eating inside, then ordering online is better and taking it home. This place is always busy, and they do their best to seat you as fast as they can. They have a great menu of items and it is slightly crowded but comfortable. You can sit inside or outside.

Right next to Mr. Fish n Chips in the strip mall. Parking can be a nightmare, its ok to walk! Great hip spot for affordable sushi and lots of options. We sat at the sushi chef bar and most unfortunately they don't do any extra services or chat with you....in our previous experiences at other sushi places it is custom to chat with customers and get the extra salad/chefs choice and the experience. This is where I knocked off the star . Service was extremely slow and not very engaging ir relatable and not attentive for being a full service restaurant. We never got checked in on, waters were empty and no one seemed to notice our hand raised up to ask. This is the 2nd star knocked off. The sushi was ok, not the best we've ever had, but it matched the prices they charge for fresh fish. The restaurant has plenty of room to entertain staff, large groups and a hip spot to have lunch o your break if you're near by. They have a full bar which is also lovely and play great music to serve the atmosphere. They have 2 TVs to keep up with the news and sports. Outdoor seating is nice however transient can be a bit awkward for those eating and they tend to stand there, however observed security is seemed pretty quick about moving them along. Can't say we would be back anytime soon, but not a place to completely avoid either. Cheers yelpers!! Happy Eats!!

It's a really good sushi restaurant, it's almost the same quality as sushi ota but affordable. I really enjoyed the combo sashimi platter, it was very fresh, fatty and delicious. The wasabi would kick-your-butt, it is very strong and deep in flavor. That's the strongest wasabi I've had in a really long time. We'll be coming back here for sure.... Service was fast, fish was so fresh and clean. It's a beautiful restaurant.

I came in on a Monday for dinner and was able to get a table inside immediately. The staff is very friendly and attentive- they made sure my baby got a high chair without even asking. This is not the best sushi spot but it is a spot if you need to scratch that sushi craving. We ordered the agedashi tofu and chicken karaage to start. The tofu and fried chicken were not too greasy and seasoned just right. The salmon sashimi had a little of the brown fat left on but that didn't impact the flavor. I found a bone in the salmon as I was eating it. The hamachi was delicious and fresh.

We do sushi at least once every week. We're on a mission to find the best sushi spot around the convoy area at an affordable price and I gotta say, Ototo Sushi Co. never fails to disappoint. There are a few other sushi restaurants on my list but this place is definitely up there. The fish feels super fresh and high quality. Their shishito peppers are definitely my favorite out of all sushi places ive been. They sautee their shishito peppers really well and the garlic sauce they use for it is super tasty. The staff is super friendly and the restaurant always feels clean inside and out. Ive been here a number of times but recently felt compelled to write this review after my last visit. I really appreciate the consistency in quality and service that this restaurant serves and will definitely be a regular for years to come.

Quiet restaurant in a strip mall of stores you might just drive right by! Definitely make a stop and sit on their adorable heated patio, or inside with a view of the sushi bar and kitchen area. Clean friendly service. Outstanding and fresh food! I have tried most things on the menu from Ramen, edamame, miso soup - to sushi and nigiri. I am always delighted at the freshness of the food. Absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend a stop.

12-31-24 Ordered: 3/5 -Tonkotsu $14.50- the flavor was just ok nothing special. I also didn't like the fact that my soup broth was not hot. -Dynamite $13- overloaded w mayonnaise. -Rainbow $13- the roll was filling. -Crunchy $7 HH plus eel $3- adding eel atop the roll was a good choice. -California $5 HH -Salmon Kama $5 HH- good portion. Perfectly cooked. -Sake $5 HH Service: 4/5 Our waitress gave us the courtesy of checking to see if we wanted to order more food before the Happy Hour ended. We enjoyed our experience. The place was happening and had customers going in and out constantly. Note: Best time to beat dinner crowd is to arrive before 5pm. Otherwise, there's a wait.

I popped in for a quick bite on a Thursday afternoon, with my laptop to do some work. It wasn't busy at all, about 3 other tables being served. The TVs were on and music playing, but the music didn't interfere with me working. Service was great. Items ordered: *Bruce Lee roll - perfect! Had it with fresh wasabi and ginger. *Salmon skin hand roll - I forgot that it's chopped up fried salmon skin, which I do not prefer. It's hard to eat because it falls off the hand roll while eating.

Cant remember what they're all called but they were all good and would 20/10 order them again. Ambiance was also wonderful! But what made this place even better was the staff. We were promptly sat down upon arriving. Servers frequently checked on us and were all so nice. But what really stood out was their empathy. Like i said, my son knocked out. He's 5. He woke up as we were leaving. by the time we figured out what was really upsetting him (he wanted to stay there and eat and wanted the table we were on), we have gotten out of our table and obviously the table was then cleaned for the next guests. So basically my lil one cried, took him to the bathroom bec unfortunately we dont get everything we want just bec we cry. So we went into the bathroom for him to cry his feelings out and be ready to get out. Was he loud? Absolutely. Was i embarrassed? Yes. But it was a lesson he needed to learn and i didnt want my discomfort to hinder that. (Mind you the bathroom was in the middle of the stairs lol midway the lower and the upper floor). So was i ashamed to get out? Yes. But the staff, so empathetic. So nice about it. Told me i didnt need to apologize and that they get it. And that made me feel better as a mama who walked out of there carrying a 5 year old out their door. No judgy stares. Just smiles and understanding eyes. So july 18 2026, 4-5pm staff, you are all so amazing and we truly appreciate it. We hope to be back again when in the area.

Omakase: Omakase 20 pieces at $180. It's a great price, but in my head there had to be a catch to it. The starter and appetizer started out strong. Everything (fish) were all fresh, so when the nigiri course started that's when everything went south. The nigiri that chef served was really small and it's not your standard size nigiri .There's barley any shari ( sushi rice) and fish. If felt like I was sampling each nigiri. You can't really enjoy it when it's that small. The only highlight was the Uni from San Diego. That felt like a month full, other than that everything just felt like a tease. Don't let my photos fool you, it was all zoomed in. My wife and I had many omakase before and lelf happy and satisfied. This was the first time that we ever left after an omakase meal and was still hungry and a little disappointed. I would love to give Sushi Maru more stars but I just can't after this vist.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

The music is a bit on the loud side, but you can still have a chat with a group. I ordered the Akira Back Pizza, Mango Bongo Roll, and Super Spider Roll. Akira Back Pizza was my favorite, as the crunchy chip base and truffle drizzle made it extremely craveable. The rolls were pretty good too, and they use real crab! By the way, Lumi's AI answering service says they do not do take-out, but they do. Their receptionist is difficult to reach to confirm, but I have ordered take-out from their bar without any issues. It's just that they may not be able to allow call-ins for to-go orders.
