I want to give this place 5 stars, but based on one bad delivery I cant. I called for delivery and after 1.5 hours it did not show up. I called the place and they said they tried to deliver. I was at my house patiently waiting the whole time and they had my correct address. Never got the food... I digress.. I've ordered pick up a couple of times since and the pizza has been great. I love Otto pizza it's probably my favorite in Portland. I have never eaten inside of this restaurant- it's a little small and I usually order pizza to go or delivery. The butternut squash riccotta pizza and mashed potato bacon are my favorites and the only two I usually order, because they are excellent. Yes, the pizza is expensive. Yes, they are delicious. I will continue to order these two pizzas and I have just discovered that there is an app where you can earn reward points on the pizzas so I will now be using that as well. I've been to Otto's twice. I like the pizza recipes on menu and was surprised by the atypical offerings. That speaks to being willing to offer something different while challenging diners. I'm not happy with the service I've had both times. Once with a guest we watched during a 15 minute interlude in between her visiting our table, as she engaged in a too long friendly conversation with her pals at a table indoors. It was only by chance she happened to see us looking st her, and then made her way out. I do not accept it when a server prefaces her greeting with "I'm really busy." It is as if I started speaking with her about my work day. No one is interested. Too often when that happens, there will be poor service to follow. I've had many servers handle a slam with grace, speed, and professionalism, who also didn't feel compelled to tell me how their capability was being challenged. I found this place on Yelp not knowing that it had been closed for three weeks after a kitchen fire. The staff were all happy to be open again and I can't blame them. The atmosphere was good--very casual, nice bar, friendly staff. The beer selection was good, although not as extensive as a real beer fancier's place. Still, I had no problem finding something I liked. The pizza was also very good. I had two pepperoni slices--nicely seasoned, crisp, generous slices. Not too thick, not too much sauce. Plus, I don't know if you like the crispy, slightly burned cornmeal on the bottom of the slice? Well, I do and it was just right. No waiting, and in fact there was hardly anybody there. We came on Monday during President's Day weekend so only the take out section was open. I've been to Otto in Boston and always loved their mashed potato, bacon, scallion pizza so I wanted to check out their original location. The take out section was quick, theres a small area by the window to stand and eat luckily since it was pretty chilly out and we wanted a quick bite before exploring the town. Bacon. Mashed taters. Pizza. Need I say more? This is Portland. Everything is awesome, and the food scene is outrageous. When everyone kept raving about OTTO pizza, I had to check it out. I love the ol' $4 Tombstone frozen pizzas so please look elsewhere if you need culinary expertise. We got the signature bacon, mashed potatoes, and scallion pizza. I will say the pizza is tasty, but I think I enjoyed the "WOW" factor of potatoes on pizza more than the actual flavor. Don't get me wrong--it's good. Just not 5 stars. I would opt for the pizza by the slice which seems like more bang for your buck. Went there on a Monday and got to enjoy a live bluegrass band, which made a great atmosphere for enjoying a cold beer with friends. Otto's makes the best pizza I've ever had. Truth. Apple-bacon-red onion? Yes. Hell yes. And yes one more time. I housed three of these in one day - two before and one after dinner - because I couldn't get enough of the magnificence of it. They make a perfect cheese slice, as well. The crust is thin but strong enough to hold the toppings without flopping around and ruining everything. The cheese is salty and gooey without making a mess, and they have the topping ratios down to a science so you get a taste of everything in one harmonious bite. I love that Otto's is clearly a gourmet pizzeria in the heart of Portland, yet there's no attitude or pretension from the super-friendly staff, and all the slices are between $2-3. For a town not really "known" for pizza, damn we have some good pizza. Particularly when it comes to that varietal known as artisanal thin crust. OTTO is a go-to, with their potato bacon probably being the highlight. But then you knew that, didn't you? Here's what I am here to add: grabbing a seat at the bar at Enzo is the real five-star experience. Great beer, cheerful bartenders, tasty taps, this is a cozy little low-key date experience that is the perfect complement to a show at nearby Port City Music Hall or The State Theater. These slices are best consumed hot and fresh anyhow, so skip the takeout or the slice bar. You'll have more fun belly up to this bar than you would eating amongst the ambiance of Congress Street. To-go is fine for lunch at the office, but don't you deserve a moment to luxuriate? read more

I had a Leslie Knope moment when I opened up my pizza box from Otto's this afternoon: I wanted to compliment the gorgeous pizza inside the way Leslie Knope compliments Ann Perkins. That's how much admiration I felt for the pizza! This would be a better review if I'd actually thought of such a compliment but I couldn't. I just started eating it right away. I got the ricotta and basil pizza (gluten free crust). The crust was perfectly golden and there were gorgeous dollops of red sauce and ricotta upon a mozzarella canvas, all sprinkled with a fresh basil chiffonade. It was so good, and I love that someone took the time to make it beautiful. I like Otto's for its toppings. The red sauce has a bright tomato flavor. I don't know what they do to the ricotta but it is so delicious. I was never a fan of ricotta but after trying theirs I'm a convert. My favorite pizza is the three cheese tortellini, though it's just a fond pizza memory since I'm gluten free now. I never had any interest in the butternut squash, ricotta and cranberry, but I was at an event where that was the only gluten free option so I tried it and actually really liked it! I would order it on my own some time now that I know how good it is. I'm really glad that they offer a gluten free crust. It has a good flavor and it's thin like the regular Otto's crust. Just a heads-up though, it is very crunchy on the edges. You might want to chew slowly if you have dental work or delicate teeth. I'm not complaining, just advising. I usually get takeout but I sat in the dining area once and had a nice glass of wine with my meal. It was cozy with dim lighting and there was a great bluegrass band playing. read more

I would definitely consider myself a huge pizza snob so I was a little hesitant to get try Otto's. However, we were pleasantly surprised. This pizza was incredible. I highly recommend the Mashed Potato slice, sounds different but is awesome!! All of their pizza was great. Good size and always so friendly. Yo know why I keep coming back? Because I love their pizza, it's a slice of heaven. The crust is probably my favorite part. It's thin but not too thin and crispy. They always have an inventive set of toppings. Lots of reviews talk about the baked potato piece with bacon, scallion and mashed potatoes. I'll echo those other reviews and say that this is by far the best I've had. The potatoes are creamy and it really tastes like a baked potato in your mouth. I don't mind that there isn't any seating except for 2 tables outside and a wee table inside. You can always head next door for more indoor seating at their Enzo extension. I like that I can buy my pizza by the slice here and it's inexpensive! The slices are huge and just the perfect amount to fill you up. The service is always quick and friendly. I've never had a bad time getting in and out quickly. You might have to wait in line sometimes depending on the crowds. The staff never seems to get flustered when it's busy. They will offer suggestions if you're undecided, which will happen often because they have so many amazing options. I like that they are open late because this is the perfect pizza to eat after Old Port shenanigans have ensued. read more

This review has been on standby always hoping my next piece of pizza is better than my last.... Unfortunately, that's not the case. Although, I do enjoy the space, the prices and the creative combos, the toppings are always so minimal. I had ordered their pork and mango pie And each slice only had about two pieces of each on it.... Same even went for our second pie with onion and pepperoni. If it's a $ issue, I wouldn't mind paying a little more (especially because it's free delivery!) for the experience of opening up that pie box and being overwhelmed with the heavy amount of toppings, considering that's probably why you've chosen to eat there in the first place. I think Otto's pizza is great, but we never eat there because there's nothing that really keeps us coming back for more.... More like coming back for what we thought we asked for in the beginning. Okay. Call me a big fat liar. I thought I could get away with calling Otto "great, but not the best". I've changed my tune. I've been back many times and it seems I like it more and more each time. They've earned their reputation for being some of the best pie in Portland. It's not Flatbread (totally different approach in my mind; I go to them for different cravings), it's not a Micucci's slab (also - totally different), it's the king of its own category. "Calling all hipsters!" - that's what the sign should say outside this pizza joint. While the atmosphere was ok, I personally feel like it's trying to hard. The lights in here are the sort where you clearly see the coils burning ever so slightly, serving no real purpose other than to look cool and waste electricity. I felt like grandpa needing to bust out the flashlight in order to see the menu. Seriously, there is not enough light in there. Drinks: we decided to try one of their home made birch beers as well as the Otto beer that was brewed just for them (I guess they sell it elsewhere in and around the city too). The birch beer was ok, but sadly used HFC as sweetener. Bummer. Home made sodas should be made with cane sugar. FACT. The Otto beer was absolutely nothing to write home about. It was somewhere between Budweiser, and just about anything else, but a lot closer to Bud. I think our server mentioned it was an IPA. Nope. Nothing like a single IPA I have ever had, and this is not an exaggeration. If there were hops in there, they must have missed my glass. I'd never order that again, sadly. They did have a decent selection of other beers, some of which I am familiar with and, in hindsight, know I would have been happier with. Food: we ordered their famous mashed potato, bacon, and chive pizza along with a classic tomato, cheese, basil, and ricotta pie. I think baked potatoes are "a thing" in Maine. The corresponding pizza tasted like a bake potato, but wasn't spectacular. The more classic pizza was good. Sauce was great and the crust was nice and thin, the way I like it. I'd still rather go to Regina's any day, but since there isn't a Regina's for miles, this would hit the spot. By the way, this is Maine. Where the heck is the hipster lobster pizza (ok, I think they did have an option with clams)?! I'm confident there is better pizza to be had in the area. This REALLY was hipster pizza, right down to the toppings. If that's your thing, I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying that it isn't so much for me. If you're making the long drive like we did (we are working on hitting all of the New England best rated pizza shops), I'd say go ahead and skip this one. If you want some funky hipster pizza with toppings you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else, this is your place. read more

I have to agree with the others; Otto (West-End) pizza is best for dine-in. Lately, take-out has been horrible! The pizzas have been very inconsistent; the person on the phone taking the orders never knows what's going on. It's very frustrating to have someone that is struggling to take your order, almost like they were not trained properly. For pizza, it's on the pricey side, which I don't mind paying good money for good food, but when you've spent $27+ on two small pizzas AND had to be on the phone for 10 minutes with someone to "write" down 2 toppings on 2 pizzas, AND wait an hour for delivery, only to have it be thrown together, with the wrong toppings and only a measly few toppings that you had to pay an extra $2.99 for EACH, really sucks. Because of the inconsistencies, I'd recommend dine-in only or stop by to get a fresh, ready-made slice on the go. Delivery is a disaster!! read more

The old flagship Otto was once a bizarre pair of holes in the wall, where you order in one room and go next door if you wanted to sit. It was here where I first had a slice of the legendary potato bacon scallion, and I was hooked ever since. The place has since taken over some adjacent floor space, making it a still quirky, but unarguably more functional place to go to eat. Otto has expanded into the greater Boston area, and I've made a point of trying each link in the fledgling chain. The original location is close to being the best, but it's beat by the Coolidge Corner location in Brookline, MA. That's just splitting hairs, since it's all pretty damn good. read more

I love this place. Otto is so good that I think about how much I'll miss it when it's gone...while I'm currently eating it. When I lived in Boston, Otto was located right next to my bus stop in Harvard Square, and I'd grab 2 slices every once in a while on my way home. I think everyone on my bus hated me for eating it in front of them. But this is Boston were talking about; all daily commuters hate everything between 4-6pm. This location is really for pick-up or eat-your-slice-and-dash only, so don't come with the expectation that you'll get a seat. The one on Congress has plenty of available seating, but they're constantly busy also. I'm not sure how they come up with their topping combinations, but they really know what they're doing down at the taste laboratory. My favorite is the squash, ricotta and cranberry pizza. I could easily put one down all by myself. I don't recommend it, but you probably could too. If you're trying to choose a pizza place to eat at, you've got a tough choice to make between Otto and Flatbread Co. Otto has the variety, but Flatbread Co. has the ambience and the waterfront location. read more

Will take the benefit of the doubt for that. Afterwards the service was much improved. The pizza selection is varied and some a bit unconventional but not bad. As I am not fond of mashed potatoes but my wife is, she enjoyed the mashed potato bacon and chive slice. Me not so much. We ordered a standard pepperoni mushroom pie which was tasty.
