Okay I've got to say I love Otto's pizza. I've been coming here for years and the pizza quality is always top notch. Recently though I came in on a Sunday afternoon in between brewery stops to grab a few slices and was greatly disappointed with the service. My friend and I originally walked in on the side of the slice side of the building, not the main restaurant/dining area. The girl behind the counter who rang up our slices was nice, but didn't seem in a real hurry to get our food to us. She was more preoccupied talking with her coworker than to ring up our food. We then asked since the place wasn't busy would it be okay if we ate our food at the bar, we figured we'd get a drink and hang out a little. She told us it was okay so my friend and I went in, and when I say the place was dirty I mean it was dirty. Nearly every table had trash on it, like every table full of plates, used napkins, dirty glasses and silverware. I was so shocked, I mean its one thing to have a table or two that just left but this was more than just two tables. However since we were there to sit at the bar we passed by the dirty tables no comment and sat down at the bar. When we did though we could see the waitress or bartender whoever was responsible for the dining room was sitting in a backroom playing on her phone. She didn't even acknowledge us she just sat the whole time. She seemed annoyed at one point that we were even sitting down so I refrained from ordering a drink. When a couple did come in to get sit down service she only then got up. And even then she didn't seem to be in a great hurry to help them. I was so shocked and disappointed. Maybe it's the labor shortage and she was overworked or maybe because it was a Sunday the staff at the slice bar was tired and bored. I don't know but I know that in my time working in a restaurant I would never treat customers like that. Very disappointed I think from now on I'll only be ordering delivery from this Otto's or maybe I'll go to the Read Street location. Either way this is not going to be a pit stop on anymore brewery stops for me. read more

My mother, sister and I were in the mood for pizza and came across this lovely place. The waitress was very friendly and the service was great. We ordered a large eggplant ricotta and basil pie, but unfortunately they were out of eggplant. Fortunately we all love mushrooms on our pizza so we decided on a mushroom ricotta and basil pie instead. It was delicious; I would absolutely recommend this place! My mother ordered a slice of the Detroit style pizza (onion and mushroom) which was tasty as well, but I would recommend the other style! I've gotten this pizza from Otto's twice. The first time it was perfect. The second time is was good but the crust was drier and not as soft as the first time. That was a bummer. Looking for a life changing pizza experience? Then OTTO is a no-brainer destination. OTTO basically changed my perception of pizza forever. I've had very delicious pizzas before, including the best pizza in America (according to Bon Appetit; I disagree), but little did I know that you can put fruits on pizza to make it taste even better! Who would have thought prosciutto, apple, and brie would go together on a pizza? Or pear, blue cheese, and arugula? I certainly didn't! Another reason to love OTTO is that I can get a slice or two instead of a whole pie. As a petite lady, I always struggle with the oversized portion in America. But a slice or two is perfect for me: smaller portion, cheaper, and I can mix-and-match toppings! A trip to OTTO is always exciting because you never know what toppings it offers on any given day for the slices. I have loved almost every single topping combination I've gotten from OTTO except for one that wasn't bad but I didn't love, which was the tortellini pizza. I think it was because I'm so used to eating tortellini in a soup, and the tortellini on OTTO's pizza are obviously baked and therefore very dry. If I have to name favorites, I think I would go with the eggplant, ricotta, basil (because I'm an eggplant freak) and the sausage and vidalia onion. Yet another reason to love OTTO is the slices punch card: after buying 10 slices, you get one slice for free! It also doesn't hurt that the staff is always friendly. If I have to be picky, the only thing I don't love about OTTO is the pizza dough. OTTO's pizza dough is chewy, and I prefer my pizza dough fluffy, airy, and crispy. If OTTO's toppings were put on top of Slab's or Zavino's (the best pizza I've had, which is in Philly) pizza dough, I bet that would be a strong contender for the best pizza in the world. read more

Highly recommend. Ate here with a group of 14 and somehow they were able to accommodate us last minute! I tried the chicken Caesar salad, the genoa salami and ricotta pizza, the tortellini pizza, and the mashed potato pizza. Wasn't a huge fan of the Caesar dressing or the tortellini pizza but everything else was amazing! The salami and ricotta pizza is a must order and we will be getting that again when we return. I won't say this is the best place in the country, but it is very good and I believe it to be among the best in Maine (top 3). I've had ottos in Harvard Square in Boston. It was phe-nom-inal! I literally have never been more impressed with a slice of pie than ottos in my life. I was looking forward to trying the OG, the original Ottos in Portland itself but I was severely underwhelmed by the quality. Burnt underside, light toppings and a complete lack of sauce at all. This is a review for the new Otto's location up on the hill, where North Star Music Cafe used to be. The biggest distinction between this place and the downtown spot is the ability to sit with table service, which is very exciting. The interior is suberbly well done, with a row of booths made from old pianos (you sit astride the old piano innards, and it looks very cool). The service, however, could use a little work. When we came in with a group of five, I asked (just out of curiosity) if they take reservations, and the hostess said "not really." There were several big tables open but she said they had been reserved for other groups (really?) so we waited at the bar. At the bar, we were totally ignored by the 4 people behind the bar, even though we were all quietly staring at them and waiting patiently to be acknowledged. It's not a huge bar, so it was a bit strange. Then when we finally got to order some drinks, only two people in our crew got to order them and the rest of us remained ignored. Luckily, just as I was about to say something, our table was ready--and it was one of the previously "reserved" ones. Not sure what happened there. Luckily, our waitress made all the unpleasantness go away. She was very friendly and enagaging and made us feel comfortable and welcomed, unlike the bar staff. Good save. I was a little bummed that there was no wine list to look at, but our waitress had it memorized and I was able to pick from her verbal list. Again, good save. We had 5 different pizzas and they were all to die for, as usual. My head was spinning with the deliciousness, but with Otto's that always happens. In conclusion, I think that once they get a few service-related kinks worked out, this new arm of Otto is going to be a go-to spot for me and my friends and family. Simply incredibly good pizza. Common denominator is a flavorful crispy thin crusT - yum! Tried the mashed potato, scallion and bacon (sounds odd, really good), blue cheese with roasted pear and arugula (also really good), and the sausage and onion. One oddity - no Parmesan. I wouldn't say that Otto's pizzas are magnificent because, by admission I am a pizza snob and have high standards. Still, Otto's has earned my praise by virtue of their consistency and creativity. The only thing I have to say that's negative and personal is I wish they hadn't put a television in their restaurant off Forest Avenue as it was fun going there and hanging out with friends after CrossFit and a TV is a distraction. Stayed down the road from here and decided to check it out based on previous reviews. We went to the take-out and dine in location. Colliflower, mashed potato scallion, corn bread chilli jalapeño were amongst the options. We decided to try the aforementioned slices. Slices were heated in the oven for a minute or so and we were on our way. By the time we got back to our room, one block away, unfortunately, the pizza was cold. Granted the temperature outside was 29F. Mashed potato and colliflower were too dominate of flavors. They did not taste like a slice of pizza (little to no sauce flavor) Beef chili pizza was too sweet for my liking with no spice from the jalapeños. If you like bold flavors then definitely try these options. Not too many pizza places offering these flavors but I'd recommend eating in. read more
