Hello French Toast! Whoa... talk about a breakfast. Although we didn't get to enjoy it in the confines of Otto's (yes, even on a Monday morning at 10:30 it was hoppin'), the cinnamon swirl FT and the banana bread FT were amazing. Sausage patties (non-organic) were top notch, too. This is an ideal breakfast that you seriously shouldn't pass up. Call ahead, take it to a picnic table or eat it in your car... it don't matter. The food is too good to pass up. Although we just ordered French Toast we can be sure by what we ate that everything else doesn't lack. The service was also pretty good, too. We ate at Otto's Place every day while visiting the Galena area. It was the only restaurant open at 7:00 AM which is when we like to eat our breakfast. Otto's Place is super tidy and clean. Our food was top notch too. We enjoyed the banana nut bread French toast, oatmeal with walnuts and fresh apples, biscuits and gravy and breakfast burrito with salsa and sour cream. A little off the main strip in Galena might be the best breakfast place around. Service is very good and food comes out fast. A little annoying that we were told we couldn't order a veggie scramble w no tomatoes. But my sweet potato skillet was great. Only downside is that portion sizes are really small and we were hungry. read more

This was a let down. I ate at Otto's before it changed hands. It was delicious and I still want it to be. The food is OK. It's not great, but it's definitely not bad. But, I was definitely expecting more. I had an omelette and the side potatoes were not cooked as well as I would have preferred. Not crunchy, but not creamy. The omelette was good... fluffy and drier than I'd like, but still good. Service needs something; it's OK and you get what you need, but there is a vibe that everyone that works there is in a rush don't have the time to actually make a connection with you. The place is busy (we had a reservation) but there were some empty tables so they were either not at capacity or they control their seatings to make sure they keep things under control. Our server was pleasant, but there was very little engagement and he seemed rushed. He also called me "Hon" which I was not digging and I did not feel was appropriate. I should have kindly asked him not to do that, because my hunch is he thinks a kind way to speak to customer, but it's really not, especially when you don't know them. I can understand that the place is hoppin' and the staff is hoppin' too, but for customers to feel that rushed vibe is a big bummer. It definitely took away from the experience. Will I be back to give it another try the next time I'm in town? Probably. read more

We had missed our free continental breakfast at the hotel we were staying at due to ya sleeping in. The thought of missing out on unlimited bacon and eggs was disappointing, but that gave us an opportunity to venture out into Galena for cute cafes, like Otto's. The place itself was such a cute and cozy restaurant, that it resembled pretty much a home. The staff was great, the wait time was fast, and the food was good. We had the corned beef hashed and shared the banana bread French toast, which was a great pair. Definitely tasted like home cooking which probably beat the free continental breakfast we missed out on that morning. Glad we found this place. read more

To begin, this place has a wonderful story about how the owners bought and named the place. This story is shared on a card at each table, along with the restaurant's philosophy. This adds to the history and lore of Galena and it made me feel part of something very special. The exterior is historic and beautiful, and the inside is charming. The food is outstanding. The menu has an innovative and creative twist on normal breakfast food. For example, my husband and I split banana bread French toast. It was delicious! Probably the best banana bread I have ever eaten. That is just one example, I provided a picture of the menu. I also ordered an omelette. The portions and the sides were generous, and the waitress said they use locally grown, fresh ingredients, and that the chef used many family recipes. The waitress, Ashley, who was sincere and friendly (as well as efficient) also told us a little bit about the history of the place, too. I even got to talk to the chef, and he was friendly and quite passionate about his work. The experience here was personal and touching, along with excellent food. The food was amazing! They have a self service coffee area while you wait and a comfy lounge. The staff was super nice. Get the Otto's Mosa. It's so good! The building is an adorable red brick stand-alone right next to the train tracks. The entrance is inviting, with a small bar and some seating, lots of natural light. The waitress kindly arranged a table for our group of seven on the upper floor. Gorgeous eclectic functional space, elegant decor, and comfortable lounge seating, local art, spotless organized, but restrooms tucked away. A MUST - Otto's Place offers a unique dining experience in Galena. We had lunch at Otto's Place yesterday after getting a recommendation from a friend for this breakfast/brunch/lunch restaurant located in a historic building. It is very close to the downtown Galena strip, but just across the river where street parking is easier. After discovering that the majority of downtown Galena restaurants have nearly identical offerings, we were thrilled to find an eatery with options including organic, vegetarian, and gluten-free. Portions were abundant and deliciously prepared. We loved the house salad; mushroom, spinach, and Swiss cheese omelet; home fries (yummy!); and fresh rye bread. Nothing was over-salted. Our meal ended with a slice of the "to-die-for" home-made seven-layer lemon cake. This wonderful restaurant is changing ownership at the end of July (2019), and we sincerely hope that the new owner continues to offer the same warm vibes and creative, reasonably-priced food choices that we experienced at Otto's Place. read more

The reviews are true of this little cute house restaurant. Make sure when you await your menu you read the meaning behind how ottos all got started! We were greeted with the door being held since I have crutches, this house restaurant isn't really handicap accessible fyi. It does have a few stairs to get into the place. Then the first level has a few table right by the front door and multiple stairs lead to the upper level with more tables. You sit pretty close to your neighbors so if privacy is what you are looking for this isn't the place for you. I love that they welcome all people. So much so I included and took a picture of the sign that was by my seat. I like that is offset from downtown galena so it's more quiet but not far from it. The at home atmosphere and welcoming feeling can't be beat. We opted for the homemade coffee cake first, which was fresh and delicious. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and my boyfriend got the corn beef hash. The homemade cubed potatoes are all that like the others have said! I had to try for myself! Delish! Loved the flavor and has a slight crunch to them which we both really liked. The breakfast sandwich I ordered was an English muffin with cheese, ham and egg. Just good flavors all put together. I've been to homemade places and this one backs up the name but also the flavor. Just overall good food. My boyfriend said his hash was good! Had a slice of the homemade dessert that had today and it was their lemon cake. The flavor and freshness was very satisfying. Our breakfast ended with one of the staff holding the bathroom door for me and making sure I could navigate the hall to get there well with my crutches. So polite, thank you! There were some small babies there, they said they do not have high chairs per say but the chairs that attach to the tables. Cost for the 2 of us with coffee and tip was under $40. While on a weekend trip to Galena we found this restaurant on Yelp. We tried to go Saturday am but the wait was 45 minutes for 6 of us. It's not a large establishment. Sunday am we wanted to give it another shot so we called ahead and they were able to put our names down while we drove into town. It's worth the wait! The 6 of us enjoyed a variety of omelettes and the Country Benedict along with coffee cake and cinnamon rolls. Everything was delicious and the portions are large. Our server was very attentive, conversational and we were never in need of a refill. I would definitely go back. read more

This is hands down the best place to get breakfast in Galena. Local, better quality and more variety than any breakfast on Main Street, and affordable prices. This place is fairly new by downtown Galena standards, so I just got a chance to try it this past weekend. My family however has already been frequenting Otto's since it first opened up, as it offered something unique to the Galena area for breakfast, and was a little set apart from all the touristy joints on Main Street. The location of Otto's is interesting and fun, it's set next to the old Galena rail line and on it's own from other establishments. The old Galena train station is across from it. Walking in, the place is very cozy and the wait staff are very friendly. Service is fast, and they offer a rotating selection of breakfast specials on the weekends. Even though they are mainly known for breakfast, I've heard they have a great lunch menu as well. Scrolled through yelp reviews and decided to order the sweet potato hash, dad ordered the biscuits and gravy. Both were excellent. Sweet potatoes were cooked with spicy sausages that paired well with the earthy caramelized onions and peppers. Mixed in with gooey egg yolk, which I dipped my buttermilk biscuit into, it was exactly what I needed on a randomly cold and rainy June morning. Dad's biscuit gravy was thick but definitely not congealed or bland like some other biscuits and gravy I've tried. Sausage was great and the buttermilk biscuits are amazing. This is my new go to if I ever need breakfast in town, table next to us ordered mimosas which I will definitely try next time. read more

Great breakfast spot in Galena just a little bit out of the busy part of town. We had breakfast our first morning in Galena on the main street and it was pretty good, but we were so glad we branched out our second morning to find Otto's Place. It looks like a quiet little place but it really is a pretty busy place. We walked up and saw no crowd but actually were told there was a 40 minute wait! Worked out well because there is a nice walking path right near by that is perfect for site seeing on the quiet side of the Galena River with great views of Galena. We made it back earlier than the expected wait time which worked out well since Otto's Place takes their wait list seriously...if you are not there to respond to hearing your name called they just pass it along to the next person (which was us this time!) So take that nice walk, but be quick about it. The food was well worth the wait. My wife had the bacon, apple, and Gorgonzola omelet special that was moist and tasty and I had the egg tacos which were also great. We shared the banana bread french toast as well to top off the meal. All the food was served quickly and the service was friendly and prompt. Contrary to their motto, Otto's Place does more than just enough for their customers! We will definitely go again on our next visit to Galena. read more

Love the location as well, sitting across from the train station and looking out over the park. Adorable, super homey, and really warm staff. This place was not fabulous. If you're looking for a quick bite, great. It's super tiny, our waitress seemed like she wasn't happy, and the food was just okay. Nothing to write home about. The Mac and cheese was supposed to have ham and peppers in it. If you take a look at my photo, it doesn't show either. I think there were two cube pieces of ham. Side note: because only one person in our party ordered alcohol, our waitress said we weren't fun. Not that this is our situation, but what if we were recovering alcoholics? I likely wouldn't return. Excellent experience all around! Even during this COVID19 craziness. Came in for breakfast, was seated almost immediately even with the limited outside seating. My friend and I shared a fabulous Bloody Mary. Then we split the 2 egg breakfast with a side of bacon and a half order of biscuits and gravy. It was all delicious. Our server was fast and friendly.
