I checked out Outrider Rooftop Lounge for drinks on a Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. It was patio season in Phoenix after all, so I had to take advantage of the opportunity. Located inside the Canopy Hotel in Scottsdale, I didn't have trouble finding free parking right outside of the hotel (I wonder if the same holds true on a Friday or Saturday night). After parking, take the elevator all the way up to get to the rooftop. Ambiance (4/5): Pretty awesome. I love a good rooftop. Outrider has a good deal of comfortable seating which is always a plus in my book. It's an open air bar, so there's also some seating by the bar which is semi-covered. There's even a firepit of sorts, but only one. Would be cool if they had more. The best part though? The view from the rooftop. You can see the mountains in the background and old town Scottsdale. I imagine that the absolute best time to stop by is during a sunset. Service (4/5): Our waitress was friendly and pretty attentive throughout. She did a great job making us feel like we were right at home. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so I can't comment on their food. Drinks (4/5): Outrider has a nice selection of craft cocktails. We went to Outrider for Sunday brunch because the reviews claimed it was the most spectacular rooftop spot and the best place for brunch. Honestly, I have no idea how it got those reviews. Maybe they're paid, I'm not sure, but based on my experience I would not go back. The biggest issue was the service. We arrived and were told to sit anywhere we wanted. After sitting down, we waited about 20 minutes and no one ever came to our table. No greeting, no water, nothing. Eventually I had to walk up to the bar and ask what the procedure was. Do we order at the bar? Do you have table service? No one could give a clear answer. They just kept saying, "If you want, you can order here." That's not the point. If I sit down at a restaurant, I expect someone to come to the table and explain how things work or take our order. If the system is that you order at the bar, just say that clearly so people know what to do. The drinks were also very mediocre. Nothing special at all. Honestly, they tasted like something you could throw together at home with soda, alcohol, and ice. The surprising part is that the food was actually phenomenal. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. The dishes were delicious and probably the best part of the entire experience. But great food alone isn't enough to make me return somewhere with poor service and forgettable drinks. My recommendation is don't waste your time on a Sunday brunch. Best to make a reservation if you plan to have a meal and stay a while, but if you want to just grab a drink and mill around it is easy to do. It's a cute rooftop bar for the Scottsdale area! The chairs by the ledge are very deep so you can't really sit back without putting your legs up (I'm also only 5'2") but they're comfy. The dinner menu isn't that extensive so don't plan on being full per se. Not great if you're gluten free :/. But I was able to get the salmon poke and it was quite tasty! My friend had the meatballs and ate it all, so guessing he liked that. I had the blackberry nojito (mock cocktail) and it was pretty good - not too sweet which I liked. I will never go. I made a big mistake when I made a reservation on a Thursday for my birthday dinner with family/friends on Monday 9/22 at 5:30 pm. Outrider rooftop lounge texted me at 2:30 pm and asked if they could reschedule me because they were closed for business purposes. I did not see the test until later that evening. They sent an email that they canceled my reservation at 3:30 pm on Monday 9/22. I found that at 4:00 pm while getting ready to go there. I had ten guests all to arrive at 5:30 pm. I called to speak to a manager and was transferred to voicemail twice and then told in a meeting. Their receptionist said the rooftop lounge was closed due to renovations, so sorry, they are in a meeting regarding this. Why did they take my reservation on Thursday, 5 days before the date? Why did they not cancel it as soon as they knew they had a problem? I picked them from Yelp reviews, looking for a place with good food and a sunset view. I had 15 minutes to find a new restaurant that could take 10 people on a patio, then contact and get all ten people to the new restaurant. This was not fair. I was excited and ready to celebrate my birthday, thinking all I had to do was show up and they did not have the courtesy to call me to cancel, so I got the last-minute messages, or call back and apologize. A chicken email two hours before my arranged party! I am writing this on 9/23, and I have still not received a call from the manager who was to call. This restaurant is part of a Hilton Hotel in Scottsdale! I never would have dreamed this would happen. I was hoping to get a call from a manager at the Hilton/rooftop lounge, but I am pretty sure that is not going to happen. Head in the sand. Losing customers. We have worked in the hospitality industry for years, training restaurant staff for AZ Department of Liquor certification and food safety, statewide. So, this was very surprising.
