I came here for brunch with my wife and another couple, and we were really impressed. The place is nicely designed with a modern decor. It is long, with a bar, and high tables in the center, as well as regular tables in the front. We were seated promptly at one of the front tables near the exterior window. I liked that the brunch entrees came with a complimentary bloody mary or mimosa. The server was very nice and attentive. For appetizers, we ordered the tzatziki and the fried halloumi. The tzatziki was so garlicky and perfectly flavored. The warm pita bread was so good, and they kept it coming. The fried halloumi was unique and delicious. The salted caramel actually worked. The sweetness contrasted the saltiness of the cheese. It almost tasted like a cheese stuffed waffle with the caramel. I ate most of it without the caramel though because I love the taste of the cheese and batter. I would definitely get those appetizers again. For dinner, I ordered the feta stuffed bread sandwich with fried chicken. My wife ordered the Greek salad. The other couple ordered the grilled cheese waffle and gyro. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. The portions were big, and we were very stuffed. The chicken on my sandwich was flavored very well and fried to perfection. The feta bread was original and extremely tasty. It was like a combination of focaccia and biscuit with a cheesy center. It came with an arugula salad with sliced apple. I have come to Ovelia many times over the years, I live in the neighborhood. Never inclined to leave an excellent or bad review because usually my experiences are pleasant but nothing to fawn over. (I don't mean this negatively I typically leave reviews for something mind blowing or something that was bad to warn customer and help the establishment with conductive criticism, even if it wasn't asked for haha) The food is generally good as well as the service. I was shocked to see on their menu they added an almost 4% charge for all credit card and debit card transactions. I added a photo below for proof. I am not even sure if that's legal in NYC. Isn't that what taxes are for? Weird, I don't like the feeling of being taken advantage of. As if 17 dollars for avocado toast wasn't making the establishment enough money lol. I think they are trying to push customers to pay in cash which benefits the owner. I don't wanna sound like a typical millennial complaining but who carries cash!? I'm sure the owner and people who don't mind throwing their hard earned money away for just a small fee 4% think this is petty but it's the principal. It just makes me feel like I'm being taken advantage of. Idc if it's just a few bucks it's just this is something the establishment must provide. Should I pay a fee percentage for the electric too? Haha anyways bring CASH if you wanna come here and not pay to use your card. They also didn't have almond milk which I find weird. They seem to try and appeal to customers who generally care about where their food is sourced from (organic/free range etc..) but having no alternative milk option seems like it's missing that targeted audience, but that's just my opinion. Long story short: Went for bottomless, took forever to get drinks and server told us our time was up early. Only got 3 drinks, but was expensive. I went for bottomless brunch. Had a reservation but took 5 minutes to get sat, no big deal. Took awhile for the server to come over but it was clear she was busy so we didn't mind waiting. Ordered our drinks as soon as she came and it took another 10 minutes to get them. Our glasses were empty more than there was anything in them. Then about an hour later she told us our time was over ("My manager will kill me if I get you another round"), even though bottomless was supposed to be 90 minutes. She told us the time started when our reservation was, even though we waited to get sat and waited for her to come over and waited for drinks. Only got 3 drinks in the 90 minutes which is disappointing since it ended up being $54pp. Food was pretty good, but I wouldn't come again for brunch. read more

I came here with my husband on Valentine's Day. I heard Greek food is well known in Astoria and finally have a chance to visit one of the most popular Greek restaurants in this neighborhood. We had a reservation and went straight to our table. We started with white wine, beer and Tzatziki. The Tzatziki and pita was extremely delicious, I especially liked the pita bread. Came back for dinner with family and the experience is definitely much different when the lights go out. Though the night setting was probably not suitable for us as a family, we can't complain too much about the food. We were a party of 5 and were seated in the back--yes, that's where all the mannequins with their pants pulled down were! Got our drinks first and I ordered the Forbidden Soapberry, which had a mouthwatering combo of grapefruit juice, lychee puree, soda water and the popular Greek cherry soda Vissinada. There was definitely a huge lychee presence in the drink but I felt that it was watered down too much. It took us awhile to get out food to come altogether and it wasn't a busy night. I got the mousaka with oven-roasted lemon potatoes on the side. Here's the thing: I pretty much grew up in Astoria and can honestly admit to never eating at an all-Greek restaurant before and the only Greek food I eat is souvlaki, so I'm not used to the richness of Greek food. I took one bite of the mousaka and I thought it was overwhelming--it felt like I was eating meat cake that was overcooked; there wasn't much flavoring and halfway through, I thought I was going to be sick. The potatoes weren't great complements either as I didn't expect them to be too tart and soaked in lemon juice. It really saddens me that my food experience hasn't been great here because I really wanted to like this place. "Delectable delights" This place is pretty much a fantastic nugget in Astoria. The restaurant has excellent non pretentious cocktails and a pretty good happy hour for certain ones. Sorry, but I have forgotten the actual names of the cocktails but the one with the boozed-soaked fig is excellent. Oh the lychee bellini is pretty fabulous, even if it is prepared with Andre champagne. God, the champagne brings back both good and bad memories from college. The place itself is super cute with an open air bar, which is great when the weather is really nice. Plus, the bar has some tupe if glowing action. A pre-Thanksgiving week feast at one of the most unassuming Greek restaurants in the area. I highly recommend the branzino if its available, the whole fish grilled made the whole table smile. Other highlights include the octopus small plate and fried cheese. If you check-in on our favorite Yelp app, you may have a glass of sumthin' sumthin' coming your way on the house. In 2019, what type of well-run restaurant puts a credit card surcharge of 5%? Honestly, probably a very mediocre one. To be frank, our server was nothing but unpleasant to be around and made our table uncomfortable, he was rude, and did not crack a smile once. We tried to be pleasant and say thank you, ask for things nicely but he gave us nothing. Anyway, we sat down for dinner at 7:10 and are just now leaving at 9 pm- we ordered a salad and a sandwich. Nothing was comped from our bill, and then to get the surcharge after that was totally unacceptable. While the food was good, there is plenty of "good" Greek food in Astoria - not worth returning to. read more

I visited during a last minute brunch with a party of ten, the place was full inside and we decided to sit outside, this day was raining and cold but we had no other choice since it was the only place covered in the outside. The waiter was so nice and she try to quickly take our order. As few minutes passed, was getting super windy and it wasn't fun, quickly after they told us we had a table inside. Sometimes is the initiation of accommodating the visitors and actually making them feel welcomed. The service is phenomenal, food is tasty and fresh. After being seated at another place that did not have air conditioning we decided to come to Ovelia since it looked so inviting from the outside with the nice outdoor seating and the openness of the inside of the restaurant. We sat down at a table with high chairs. Have to say the chairs were nice, since there's someone to place your feet instead of having your feet dangle 2 feet above the ground. 2 separate menus, one for drinks and one for food. The food menu was aesthetically pleasing. We ordered 2 rounds of drinks and a few dishes to share. Note that if you check in on yelp and order an entire you get a free glass of wine. As for the food we ordered: Grilled calamari, lamb with fries and cheese casserole(forgot the name), greek sausage special, salmon kabobs, and the kabob platter. The first three items I listed were small plates, which were kind of a give and take on the portions. The small plates are appropriately named, yes they will be quite small. However the lamb casserole was super heavy. The grilled calamari was overcooked, mostly a burnt taste throughout. The kabobs were pretty decent in terms of portion and cookery. Problem with all the food was everything was completely overseasoned. I noticed they have a happy hour till 8pm, would probably return for happy hour or just drinks Shout out to our server Diana. I saw a post on Facebook about brunch in Astoria and saw a picture of Baklava pancakes. Who could say no to that? We had the opportunity the next day to pass through Astoria and grab brunch at Ovelia. We got there a little too early; they open at 10am, but we were welcomed in a few minutes before 10 and situated ourselves at the bar until the hostess was able to seat us. I loved the decor; if you look closely, the little butterflies actually flutter their wings! In addition to the Baklava pancakes we ordered the Buffalo Calamari and the Eggs Florentine. The Buffalo Calamari was served with fresh, warm pita slices, but the buffalo sauce was overwhelmingly salty after a few pieces. I would order the sauce on the side next time. The Eggs Florentine is actually served over slices of spinach pie! Delicious! The potatoes were also fried to perfection. The Baklava pancakes is basically whole wheat pancakes with honey syrup and crushed pistachios. I loved it. I love my pancakes with crispy edges and these were perfect. My husband and I flew in from California and decided to grab a bite to eat at Ovelia. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the service staff was very attentive and friendly, and the food - WOW!! We ordered quite a few things from their menu because of how hungry we were and we were not displeased with any of the items. Went here one day after work with my co-worker. They sell mostly Greek food. My friend ordered for us because I wasn't sure what I wanted so we shared "small" plates. We ordered Greek salad, meatballs, fried calamari and a pitcher of red sangria. The meatballs were made from lamb, beef & pork. They came along side tzatziki sauce and grilled pita slices. They were tasty, a tad dry but the sauce helped. The pita was crisp, yet soft and warm. Good flavor. The greek salad was good. It consisted of tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta & kalamata olives (thats a real Greek salad, no lettuce) it was very good. We dressed it ourselves with the red wine vinegar and olive oil they put on the table. I loved the huge slices of cheese that we were able to cut up ourselves. Calamari was a huge portion, crispy, not chewy at all. It came accompanied with marinara & buffalo sauce. Sangria was refreshing, not too much orange peel in it (which I like) and it wasn't too sweet. It was good. Service was fast and the waitresses were very attentive. read more

Actually 3.5 stars. Tasteful contemporary decor coupled with a nice ambiance. A good place for a social dinner since the music is not loud. Seating is also generously spaced apart. The food here ranged from good to mediocre, but nothing mind blowing. Completely acceptable if it was half the price. BTW, this should be listed as a $$$ restaurant instead of $$. The best dish was the Monastiraki bifteki. Naturally delicious meat texture, without being mushy or with cheese added. IMHO perfectly seasoned. The grilled octopus appetizer was seasonally priced, whereas every other Greek restaurant I've been to in Queens charges a fixed $17 to $19 for a comparable serving size. Of course when the bill came, it was $28 for the standard 2 tentacles. It did taste good though. Lamb chop special of the day a shocking $42! The Garidopilafo curried shrimp sounded amazing but tasted uninspiring, partly because the rice was tastier than the shrimp. On the other hand, the Greek coffee skirt steak and accompanying mashed potatoes was too salty. This inconsistency is just sloppy for a restaurant that aspires to be higher end. Service was efficient and friendly, and we still had a good time, so no regrets going there. read more
