We stopped here for lunch while we were in the area. Upon entry we were warmly greeted and told to pick a place to sit. This is a favorite amongst locals given we had several people stop eating and looking at us and the waitress knew the other customers by first name basis. They had two specials on the menu. They had run out of turkey by the time we got there. I ordered the BLT which was very good but messing up a BLT is a little hard to do. Husband ordered a cheeseburger which he enjoyed. My son had kids chicken tenders which he devoured. The menu was large and had the typical diner food which is delicious. We definitely will be back to try more items read more

What a wonderful find! This restaurant is the kind of old-fashioned, family-run operation that gives East Tennessee a reputation as an amazing place to eat. You can tell that the folks who frequent this spot know what they like, and they know Owens Restaurant will deliver. It's a meat and three, but what they do with entrees and sides is pretty incredible. I found out about this place through my new job. I had no idea why we absolutely had to go to Owens on a Thursday, but boy, do I know now. Chicken and dumplings is on the menu on Thursdays, and if you've not sat in a Southern grandmother's kitchen and had a bowl of chicken and dumplings, you can get that rich, comforting experience here. Great ratio of chicken to dumplings, and the dumplings are the thick, homemade pillows of goodness that they should be. The chicken fried steak was also terrific. Nothing from a freezer, you could tell that this was a hand-battered steak. The seasoning was perfect. Let's talk about sides for a second. One of my friends ordered a double portion of the squash casserole. I like squash casserole, don't get me wrong. But a double portion? Turns out, she knew what she was talking about. Cheesy, gooey, with a really good portion of fresh squash. Also really enjoyed the cucumber salad. It was diced very finely, which is very different from how my family makes it, but I ended up changing how I do things at home because I like the texture so much better. How's the service? Well, if you don't clean your plate, the first thing they'll ask is if the food was okay. All of the lovely ladies check to make sure you're happy throughout the meal. Well based on reviews I stopped here on a Thursday afternoon. Maybe it was an off day but I was not impressed with anything. I had a daily special of chicken fried steak with gravy and 3 sides. So let's unpack this: The chic fried steak- thin, not especially large at all. Flavor was fine but quantity lacking. I had the gravy on the side and it was fine. The Cottage cheese tasted mushy and I only had a spoonful. Potato salad was ok but a tad thin for me, not runny but thin. The cold slaw was ok. Not great but definitely acceptable. I guess I was expecting more based on the solid 5 star reviews. It was clean and staff all nice older folks which is great. I'd eat here again and have something completely different but I'm not racing back. read more

The lady that answered the phone sounded aggravated we called to place a to go order, Paid $40 for an omelette, 2 orders of pancakes, 3 scrambled eggs bacon , and a mini fried pie. The service and food are really good and I will be back. I was very sad because of one huge deal for my family. My daughter has severe Peanut and Nut allergies, she can't eat anything that has touched Peanuts and that means that she couldn't have anything that gets fried because they fry the kids PBJ sandwiches. Yes I get it she is just one kid but it is to sad knowing this. Maybe in the future they could just put a PBJ on the menu and not fry it so we don't have to worry. She did like the biscuits and gravely and my corned beef sandwich was so delicious. I would have to try the chili again because I wasn't totally sure about it. I think maybe it just needed some more salt. We will be back, not my child probably but I will. The prices are amazing too! read more

A friend and I had read somewhat positive reviews of Owens Restaurant located just outside of Dandridge, Tn. On 01-20-2020 we decided to eat there. I ordered the meat loaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, okra, cold slaw and water with lemon to drink. The waitress was kind and cordial. The meat loaf was about half the size of what I had expected and was mediocre tasting but far from outstanding. The mashed potatoes and gravy would have made a shockingly stunning photo but was somewhat stiff and was not anything that I could or would boast about. The okra more than likely had been left in the deep fryer longer than it should have been. Now, for the supposed cold slaw! The cold slaw didn't have the slightest hint of being cold. The slaw was room temperature if not slightly warmer than room temperature. It appeared to be a cabbage head that had been left in a blender much longer than necessary because it was completely pulvarized. I could not find the smallest hint of onions, carrots, celery, sugar, salt, pepper or mayonnaise in the so called cold slaw. I must say that this supposed cold slaw was the very worst tasting slaw that I have ever had the misfortune of attempting to consume. On a positive note: The more than plain slaw did appear to be fresh cabbage. The price for this meal was $7.95 plus tax which, in my modest and humble opinion, was a little expensive considering the "public school cafeteria quality food" that was served! read more

Although it was shortly before closing time we were greeted kindly and felt no pressure to expedite our ordering, eating and vacating the premises (we left just before closing time anyhow). Our waitress was nice and accommodating. I ordered a bacon cheese burger and onion rings; with the wife ordering chicken tenders and turnip greens. My burger was juicy and tasty. The onion rings were nothing to write home about, but A-OK. The wife's chicken tenders were A-OK, but appeared to be boxed tenders heated up. She really liked the turnip greens and the waitress instructed her on how to add a dash of vinegar, if inclined. She was and did. We both agreed that we would eat here again, if we ever venture back this way. Overall a 3-Star on the food (A-OK), but it gets bumped up to a 4-Star review based on the service. read more

This is a new restaurant in Dandridge. It was very busy when we drove by, reminding us that it was open, so we decided to give it a try. Their menu ranges from breakfast to a 12oz T-Bone Steak. They also have sandwiches, soups and salads. My experience was not great. We sat ourselves and our waitress was at our table quickly taking our drink order. Even though it was lunch time, we decided to have breakfast. I had the first thing on their menu - a tenderloin with 2 eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy. After placing our order, we had to wait 20 minutes for our food. When we got the food, it was not hot, so I'm not sure why there was such a long wait. The tenderloin was not tender at all - it required a steak knife to cut and a fair amount of muscle to chew. The rest of the meal was ok - nothing special. Having some time to observe other customers, I learned that they had some lunch specials - items that were not on the menu. Many people had the hot roast-beef sandwich (with mashed potatoes) and judging by the rate at which they cleared their plates, I have to assume it was very good. Their prices are very innexpensive; the bill for two of us was under $14. The place is new, so I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and will go back and try them again. read more

Quaint little place. If you live here, the server is probably your aunt or your neighbor or your grandmother. If you're not from 'round these here parts, your server will still remind you of an aunt or a neighbor or your grandmother. They will serve you balogna for breakfast. That does not happen in Texas. And what are grits? Why? WHY!?!?! You can put gravy on anything. ANYTHING. They're able to give you whatever you want off a traditional, country breakfast menu... with gravy on it.
