Oya has the potential to be great. they have good talent on staff, but horrible horrible customer service. The salon has a nice, clean vibe - but the staff has no concept of how to treat their clientele. I went here once for a root touch-up on my color - $80 and 2 and a half hours later i was done. The whole time you are there they push product at you, even when you say 'no thank you'. If you make an appointment with their master stylist/owner Brian Bode - he may not even touch you. His assistants will do you color, cut your hair - and you are lucky if Brian finishes up the blow dry. What a riot! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! Go to Euphoria instead - they are fabulous - have been featured in Vogue, Elle, and Allure, and are always nice. read more

I'm rather particular with the color red I choose and she is really good about working with me to make my hair fiery as anything. She gave me bangs at my request, and I was so nervous but she did an excellent job and I LOVED my hair when she was finished. Oya is a cool, modern and trendy salon. I was happy to go there for approx 1 year. Watch out for the $30 hair treatment, the managers try to have the stylists add -on around shampoo time! The best OYA stylist was Kimberlee, she has a phenomenal talent for hair color and highlights. Haircuts are always spot on, just enough trend and great for the workplace. I always get compliments on my blond hair! Kimberlee actually left and is now at Vanity Salon on Tyler, but OYA was a good place for the time I was there and they have a GREAT customer appreciation Christmas Party! read more

I just had the world's best blowout at this salon! My hair has never looked this good! Thank you Natalie for making me feel so beautiful! I highly highly recommend this salon and specifically Natalie. She literally shampooed my hair for 15-20 mins and recommend a new shampoo to keep my hair from getting waxy. Then she added volumizing mousse before she blew it dry. I didn't know my hair could have so much volume! My hair is high and bouncy and looks amazing! Came in to get my hair dyed darker for fall with the intention of having a "carmel-y, (dare I say) 'pumpkin spice'" kinda warm color to it. I had leftover highlights from my previous spring balayge, so my stylist Alex did a reverse balyage on me, dying my roots darker and toning the lighter portions on the ends that she had left out. The end effect was INCREDIBLE!!! She seriously read my mind on what I wanted and totally delivered my beautiful fall dream hair :) If you are in need of a stellar colorist (who also happens to be an awesome, hilarious and fun person to talk to) Alex is your girl!!! The salon also was beautiful, great atmosphere with really nice stylists and front desk people. They cary amazing products as well, which is always a plus. Alex brought me fresh coffee and a stack of magazines before she started on my hair, which was really thoughtful and made me feel at home. I had other stylists ask me if I needed anything while I was waiting for my color to process. All in all it was a fantastic experience! So I hate getting my hair cut. No one every gets what I'm trying to say back to the top of my head! So with that being said... I was not expecting the fantastic job Stacia Nicole did with my hair! I used to live in Monterey and Natalie started to do my hair it has been 4 years, It is pricey but well worth it, after i would have my hair done, people would ask me where i did my hair. I moved to Sacramento, CA and i still go all the way to Monterey to do my hair with Natalie (no one else) so my mom came from Texas and took her there, my mom loved her hair!! she is always open to see pictures and ask questions to see if she got what you really want! She is young and has a fresh style and recommends what is in right now! I will continue going to do my hair with Natalie she is the best!!! read more

Recently moved to the area and was nervous about getting my hair done. Liked the location and look of the salon so chose Oya after reading yelp reviews. My stylist was excellent. I gave the stylist permission to do what they thought would look best and walked out with exactly what I wanted without saying a word. Only complaint was not relating to services, but the music was extremely loud and techno. I mentioned to the stylist that I thought it would get annoying and it was switched to a different station. If you need a good stylist, Oya should be your first call. read more

I am not a fan of getting my hair cut. I usually go every 6 months or so and even then I'm dragging my feet through the door of the salon. I used Yelp to find a salon in the area that had some good reviews. Most of the ones about this location were rude receptionist and about un-natural hair color so after weeding those out I decided to take the plunge and call for an appointment. I am SO GLAD that I did! The girl who cut my hair was new to the salon yet she has been in the business for many years when she lived in Chicago. She was amazing. I am actually looking forward to the next time my hair needs trimmed and I will certainly ask for her. I also got my eyebrows waxed (by a different woman) and I must say that she knew what she was doing! I couldn't help but keep glancing in the rearview mirror on my way home. Don't pay any attention to the prices listed on their website. For some reason they are way more than what is actually charged. Just ask at the time of your appointment and go with that. read more

I put off getting my hair cut for... a few years. In the new year I decided it was time for me to finally chop it all off, and donate a foot or two of hair. Made an appointment with Danielle. She was AMAZING. I was a bit nervous, but I couldn't have asked for a better cut. She was incredibly observant and meticulous, which I appreciated, and pleasant to chat with. I feel terrible not remembering her name (Janice or Jessica I think), but she was a miracle worker as she did my hair up for my destination wedding that I had at The Lodge in Pebble Beach. She was super fast, totally knew her stuff, was really fun to work with, and best of all, she didn't charge an arm and a leg for her services. So, as far as the actual styling is concerned, she really deserves 5-stars (or six actually!!). I only knocked off a star because the only male in the salon (I'm not kidding) is the owner and really kinda bugged me since it seemed like he was treating his stylists like pieces of meat and not professionals. Quite possibly the worst salon experience I've ever had. I went in for a color and cut... nothing too crazy: red touchup on the roots and a standard layered cut. To spice things up a bit, my stylist suggested black low lights to which I said, "Sure!" I'm all about trying something new. The stylist seemed like a cool guy... friendly and personable. But the coolness factor ended there, because he sure could've used a lesson in hair! I ended up walking out with mostly black hair (not low lights) and a small patch of red on top. The red patch was slightly smaller than the palm of my hand. You can imagine how silly that looked! As for the cut? A couple snips here and there, and I looked almost exactly the same as I did when I first came in. You couldn't even tell I had gotten a hair cut. Best of all, when I got home... I noticed globs of red dye behind my ears and on my neck that he didn't wash off. Sure, I get it, sometimes dye gets on your skin and doesn't immediately wash off. I'm not talking about the typical stray streak. I'm talking GLOBS of dye. I can tell you, the $200+ price tag was not worth the quality of the work. I've paid a lot more to get my hair done, but at least the work justified the price. This was not the case with Oya. Wayyyy overpriced... it's like a mediocre salon masquerading as high-end. And how about this: The entire time my stylist and I were chatting, he kept bragging about how he used to be this big shot in LA, doing hair for actors and actresses. That clearly worked out for him, seeing as he's a sub-par stylist at a sub-par salon in Monterey. He was also ripping on hair stylists who work in malls, talking about how bad they are. I've gone to several stylists in my lifetime - even ones who work in malls - pretty sure they were all 100x better. read more

I had the worst hair experience of my life at Oya last week. I had Johnny as my hairdresser. I have a huge interview coming up in a week and am also meeting my fiancées family in 2 days and he completely messed up my hair. I went in and showed him a photo of what I wanted my hair to be, which was blonde. He confirmed with me that he could do it, and we started the process. It took him 6 hours to do my hair and it TURNED OUT YELLOW AND ORANGE!!!!! When I went to pay it was $355 and I hated it! Online it said the price would be about $150 so I expected it would be around there. It was nothing like the photo I showed him. I payed and went home and cried all night. The next day I called the salon to see if he could fix it before my interview and he had the front desk attendant tell me that there was NOTHING he could do and that I would have to come back in 3 weeks for another appointment. He wouldn't even come to the phone to tell me what I could do to help. I am so upset and have been wearing a hat for 3 days. I paid twice what I expected and I am depressed about my hair. Any other hairdresser would at least see me to see what they could do, but not I'm stuck with yellow and orange hair for the biggest interview of my life. Everyone here looks down on you as you come through the door. It's as if they are evaluating your importance. The girl at the front desk couldn't bother herself to find my appointment until I prompted her after 5 minutes. She seemed pleased to introduce me to the owner--a self-important person who obviously thinks that Oya actually belongs in LA. My haircut was OK, but due to the cold attitude of the employees, I will never return. There are much better salons in town that truly CARE that you are their client. read more

Id give this a zero if I could... Horrible salon! I will definitely never go back or recommend this place to anyone. I went int just for them to style my hair- down with curls. I brought in clip in hair extensions & the stylist told me it's be an extra $30 to put them in so I said I could do it myself. After I put them in she sprayed my whole head with hairspray & then strand by strand before curling she sprayed each piece 3x! I was so confused the whole time while she was spraying bc I told her my hair was naturally curly and held curls really well. While she was curling my hair she kept pulling so hard that my clip in fell out multiple times. When she finished it looked terrible & felt like a rock. I felt so unattractive when I was done. I got to the counter & the said $90 which is totally ridiculous for someone just curling your hair!! I called when I got home & said I wanted a refund , they called back and offered me a $90 gift card. I said I didn't live here and wouldn't want to go back after I had such a bad experience. She called her boss back again & told me they'd refund me $30 wth??! I told the receptionist to have her boss call me then. She called & made all these excuses & said they never refund for the full amount & that she worked on my hair for an hour and has so much experience. I said well if she has so much experience and worked on my hair that long it should look like she did but instead it looks like shit and feels like a rock! I told her id pay $40 because that's what it looked like I payed for it & she finally said okay. My girlfriend was there with me and had her hair styled by another stylist and hated if also & for some reason hers was $10 cheaper. We both went home and redid our hair. Terrible!! Was overpriced for the shitty jobs they do. We were there to get styled for my sister in laws wedding & come to find out their makeup artist didn't show up for the wedding which made the bridal party and hour late & my mother in law went to her room to redo her hair after they styled it. I am new to the area, and needed to find a new hairstylist and a great salon. Needless to say, I did not find it at Oya. From the moment I walked in, I wasn't a happy camper. I found my way to the front desk where I was handed a smock from a girl with a frown on her face not happy to be at work on a Saturday. Seeing as it was my first time in the salon, I didn't know my way around. She just handed it over and attempted to move on with her day when I asked if she wanted me to change and where the bathroom was. She pointed. Not the most helpful gal. I ended up waiting close to 20 minutes past my appointment time because my stylist needed to get her weekly gossip in from other coworkers and friends outside. Finally it was my turn. I was able to bounce some ideas off of my stylist and we came up with a great plan for a couple highlights in the front and a nice cut. Don't get me wrong I do like the way my hair turned out. Other than the waiting and the not so helpful staff, the main reason this place gets two stars is because I feel I was totally taken advantage of with the price. I was charged for "creative highlights" which turned out to be a total of about 5 foils, "toner" and a cut, total of $200. First of all I have had blond hair and get highlights my entire adult life and have never paid for toner!!!!! Second I do not think 5 foils should amount to $75-110. Lastly, when it was time to checkout my stylist brought over products she told me I "had to buy" in order for my hair to be healthy. I was ok with buying some because I was low on products at home. When the gal at the front told me the total cost my jaw almost hit the floor (another $160 for shampoo and conditioner, I checked online and they were 1/2 the price) it was already too late and she was ringing me up. I planned to return the products the next day unopened, and not even taken out of the bag. I soon learned all product sales were final and, when I told them nobody told me that when I bought them the girl answered "well if you ask then we tell you, if not then we don't say anything" what a ripoff! Now I'm stuck with hair products that should contain gold! Needless to say I will not be returning to this salon. read more

Where do I begin. Truly the worst experience in my lifetime. I made an appointment due to an add I saw, free Keratase treatment with color. In addition the salon looked hip and professional which raised my confidence level. My appointment was with Courtney and after talking we agreed to low lights (which ive been doing) and highlights. After the color and treatment I told Courtney that I only want a quarter inch cut. I told her I was growing my hair. She said I will help you grown your hair. I left with the worst cut ever. My hair on top was about an long, the crown and sides are all different lengths, different lengths on each side of my head. And my hair is not in the same condition it was in. A couple days later I called to speak to the owner, Brian. He offered me two Kerastase conditioning treatments, he did one. When he asked Courtney about the cut she flat out lied and said I only cut the bottom. I said we can call Debbie at Studio 104, Courtney then said "I point cut it". It's been six weeks and my hair is still a mess. I'm trying to get the bottom One length, the sides one length and the top long enough to lay down and not stick up.... Like I said, the worst ever. I wish I NEVER walked in. As an update and a year later I'm still growing out the mess and breakage from the chemicals Courtney used. On one side my hair is uneven because of the damage caused and bad cut. It's long short long, not even. If I were to cut it even it would be much shorter than I want. Don't waste your time thinking this is a great place because of the look of the studio, go to Euphoria! read more

A couple of months ago, an associate had her hair done at Oya and she posted the photo on FB. I loved it!!! Got in touch with her and found out where she had it done and by whom. I was overdue for a cut on my very short hair and happily was able to get in that same day. I was so excited. When I arrived, I was taken to the shampoo area. When the young lady was done, the back of my shirt was sopping wet and they had to blow dried my shirt. The stylist cut and blow dried - just an ordinary cut. The stylist told me she came from L.A. where she did celebrities - (from reading reviews, that must be the standard "line"). The cost of my very short hair was $95! I explained that I get my hair cut every four weeks and that seemed pricey, she told me I could get a trim in 4 weeks for $25. Not going back. The value is not there. read more

First off, the salon location is on Lighthouse Ave now, not Foam St. (I circled around on Foam St. lookin for it...it has moved!) Ok...now for the nitty gritty... the salon itself it very modern, very trendy - they have cool art on the walls and they even have a computer bar where they let you sit and go online while your color processes! that was probably the best part of the salon. i got my hair cut and colored...and boy was it CUT and COLORED. I don't mean to diss my stylist because she was very nice, but i left the salon crying the whole way home! i wanted subtle, natural looking highlghts, and i ended up with chunky BLONDE (i hate blonde) streaks that were anything but natural looking. and as for the cut, she took off WAAAAY more than i wanted! i can't wait for my hair to grow out. she butchered the cut (an A-line type of bob) i had and turned it into the cut i specifically was trying avoid (a wedge-ish cut). i wore a hat for the next 2 days. to her credit, my stylist "fixed" my color for free (she put a toner on it to get rid of that bright blonde mess). i appreciated her doing that, but for $145 i would have expected that to be done right in the first place! overall the salon was cool, but the end result was definitely not my cup of tea. enter with caution. read more

I was like really? Bonnie has a great personality but she didn't accomplished what I want. I have a short hair and all I wanted for the new year is to add a bangs. Unfortunately she can't do it. It took her 1 hour just to work on that bangs and ended up like a layer cut. I have finally decided to go here because of all the good reviews I read. When I came in, nobody greeted me. I had to call somebody to tell them that I have an appointment. I thought everything is all set up but I had to wait 20MINS for my hairstylist. The lady who is in the front desk offered to wash my hair and I was wondering why it is taking her so long to wash it (15min) when my hairstylist arrived the lady just told her "ahhmm I don't know how to wrap it" I was like really?? From what I have noticed, everyone here are students. Most of them are trainees and if you want to get a professional haircut from this place you have to pay $100. The wines, coffee, soda, access to the internet in the mac desktop doesn't give any justice for the price! And they all cared on how they look not on the good service that they can provide to the customer! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! read more

All of the staff is very friendly and likable, but they did not listen to what I said. I went there twice and I can't believe I made the mistake two times. The first time I went I said I wanted highlights and lowlights, but the girl said no that I wouldn't want lowlights and that she wasn't going to do them. I wanted them even at the end. The next time I went my color ended up looking yellow. The second time I went for just a trim and the stylist nearly took off two inches. Avoid, at, all, costs. I never write reviews after bad experiences. Normally I just roll my eyes and go about my day. But this place was just so awful that I need to speak against it. My wife scheduled this place for me earlier in the week. Now, I am a short haired male, essentially looking for someone to thin out my crazy cowlick hair. I get to this place, my hair stylist can barely hold the Scissiors/Razor. The guy proceeds to cut in total silence for 30 minutes. Silent, bumbling to handle the equipment, zero confidence in the cut from start to finish. I flinched in pain from him using the razor near my ear, nothing. Out of all of my haircuts in the past 10 years, this result was the most depressing. Now, my hair just looks like just like anything I could get at super cuts. SUPER CUTS. Now, I could have just went about my business, disappointed in the experience, but I get to the counter and I am charged 50$ dollars for the cut. FIFTY DOLLARS. Again, short haired male the cut was essentially a 50$ trim. I expected at the absolute most a 30$ shitty haircut charge. This was 50$. I made it very clear to front desk that I was unhappy with the experience, they assured me that I could get a cheaper rate from another stylist next time. I will pass, if I want a half-assed, sleep inducing hair cut from an inexperienced stylist I will go to super cuts. In absolutely no way is this place anywhere worth the advertised prices. At least not in my experience. Maybe in the next month I'll find a decent place to get my haircut. read more

I booked an appt online for a woman's haircut, and noted that prices were $50 and up. I was quite surprised when I was told my charge was $90!?!? I had no extra add-ons and was in a hurry so I didn't even have it dried. During my cut, 2 females stood behind, and to the side of me, watching the stylist. I was wondering if she was on "probation" or something; it made me somewhat uneasy. I later learned they were "newer to the floor" and watched for educational purposes. I think they should have introduced themselves and asked if I was OK with them observing; I would have said yes. I do like my haircut; she did just what I wanted. However, I won't be going back ...to me, it's unnecessary and pretentious to spend that much on a haircut (unless of course, you're Sally Hershberger ;) read more

I went to Oya shortly after moving to Monterey back in August. I was already nervous about getting my hair done since my trusted stylist was now hours away- and the stylist at Oya had someone come over at least 15-20 times to see how my hair was looking, and by her tone in her voice she was not confident at all. My hair is bleach blonde, and until moving I did not realize how much of a nightmare it is to find someone to do blonde without turning my hair orange. Sure enough, I had orange roots. She told me it would wash out using purple shampoo after a couple washes, it never did. Then I went back to my stylist, and yes that means driving 2.5 hours to see her where it was corrected. I would not go to Oya again. Nice interior design, beautiful studio, but that's not the most important part. read more
