I am a frequent customer of this Pacific Catch, located in front of San Mateo's Cinemark (they have a movie special deal). They have a great rewards program that often gives incentives to dine in, such as various discounts, free birthday bowls, and point redemption - they even let you order it online very easily as takeout. They have a pretty good happy hour on weekdays from 3-6pm, and a discounted weekday lunch special (recent addition). I'm typically happy to patronize San Francisco-born eateries, especially if they take pride in ethical sourcing and quality ingredients, despite how much pricier that makes the food... oh, and the food is definitely pricey ($16 California roll ftw). Think of them as an upscale seafood fusion (mixture of American, Asian, Hawaiian, some Mexican) chain that's a step under fancy. Across all their restaurants, they have a high standard of cleanliness, modern beachy or relaxed interior design, and a nice patio section (San Mateo's patio only came into existence after COVID). Because they make it so easy to redeem rewards and promotions for takeout, I've only dined in twice for happy hour. I think the quality between dine-in and takeout is almost the same, though it looks much better in person as it's plated very well. It's usually quite relaxed inside, so I'd recommend coming here for happy hours, groups, dates, or casual dining. If you love seafood, I'd direct you to Half Moon Bay instead. It's not that the seafood is bad - it's just that I prefer various specific dishes elsewhere (fish plates, fish and chips, sushi, lobster rolls, poke)... so I would say that what Pacific Catch coins is providing ALL of these dishes on the same menu, putting a fusion spin and pretty touches on them, and hosting it all in an upscale, American-friendly environment. And by American, I mean the flavors are kind of sweeter with more soy and ginger thrown in instead of our usual fermented suspects, yaknow? I think the pupu platter is solid (the items change every now and then), enjoy the fresh catch entrees if I want to splurge, and typically get the poke bowls, for which they frequently have deals. The tacos are huge and promoted often as well - I get full after two. I'm not a fan of their hard tortilla chips, their sushi with overly sweet and hard vinegar rice, their side salad with some very sweet and salty thick dressing, and their winter special clams miso udon which was definitely a scam. I will continue to come here because of the rewards program, though I definitely live near a more casual seafood chain that's much, much cheaper and tastier... I come here when I want to spoil myself. They do swap out items seasonally, which makes it enticing to come back again to see what's new. read more

It's crazy to think a fish-centric restaurant does beef so well- but they do. "Cabo Calamari" ($15.50) was as expected, fresh but not a standout. Had lunch here on a Sunday around noon, and with a reservation booked online in advance, we were seated right away. Service was standard and sufficient, and our order was ready quickly, in no more than ten minutes. The east coast lobster roll was served on soft hawaiian bread, with tasty herb aioli and a generous cup of warm clarified butter on the side... it was sooo good, as expected, consistent in quality to what I've gotten at other locations. I tried the seasoned fries, which weren't bad, but the cajun seasoning was a bit too much spice for me. And I wasn't a fan of the cilantro ranch here (they don't offer regular ranch dip). Honestly even tho it's a fish-forward restaurant, they have plenty of vegan and meat-aterian friendly options. This particular location had a good outdoor seating area and a designated menu just for dogs our server was really friendly and she was super nice about Mandu being there. The guaca-poke was pretty tasty. The ahi tuna was tossed in ponzu and the guac had green onions in it which i thought was an amazing addition of flavour. I thought the tuna and guac combo would be weird but it ended up being super tasty with the tortilla chips. The fish and chips were pretty solid. I thought it was a bit too oily but the fish quality inside was pretty good. I also really liked the coleslaw and fries that it came with. (There was also option to change to some other sides). Lastly and most importantly, Mandu really liked his carrots and brown rice dish. The carrots were slightly cooked, which is really good for dogs (especially for mandu without teeth). 11/5/23 I've always passed by Pacific Catch when I'm in downtown San Mateo area. My fiancée is a huge fan of this chain and he convinced me to get lunch with him. We were seated outside since it was nice weather at the time. Here's what we got: - Crispy Alaska cod fish and chips (his) - Crispy cod tacos (mine) We waited about 10 minutes until our meals came. Our waitress also brought out clean towels for us that she set to the side. Throughout our meal, she was attentive and checked on us from time to time. The cod pieces are generous sizes. I like that the beans were set to the side and there's even a small side salad that came with my tacos. The cod was fried perfectly and not dry inside. Pacific Catch is always such a great experience. I'm a regular, and honestly, I never get tired of going. This time, I had the macadamia-crusted sea bass with asparagus -- absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the black cod entrée, which came with string beans, and it was just as amazing. We finished with the chocolate molten lava cake -- my favorite dessert, hands down. It was superb, rich, and perfectly gooey. Our waiter, Eduardo, was super friendly and went out of his way to make sure we had a great time. He even brought us fresh mint for the dessert and made me the perfect less-sweet nohito. I asked for less sugar, and he nailed it. Everything we ordered was pretty good but I'd skip on the sushi next time. The salmon fresh catch and Mexican grill chili lime shrimp were good and kept well as leftovers for the next day. Here's the reason for my low review: It took about 15 minutes to put in my order. The picture menus aren't up to date and the workers aren't all aware. After a few minutes of the worker struggling to add the item I wanted, they called someone over who tried then informed us it wasn't an available item. The worker also had trouble finding the items on the computer and couldn't figure out how to open the register to cash out. Another worker came and explained why the issue happened and then fixed it. Great place for a party! We were able to have the back room for my dad's birthday dinner and it was great! We were able to decorate the room, which had several heaters that kept us toasty, and Andrea provided great service for our family's night. The bathrooms were really nice with a few stalls and sinks outside of the bathroom if you just need to wash off your hands. The downtown San Mateo area means you can walk around after, maybe grab dessert, and parking is super available in any of the streets or in the garages. We ordered a guaca-poke, calamari, and coconut shrimp appetizer for each of our tables and they were all made fresh and set up our meals! I had one of their sushi bowls, which was overall good-- the fish was super fresh but the soy-wasabi wasn't my favorite flavor. My dad got a Sea bass and was able to add a skirt steak which he loved. The place wasn't busy on a 2:30 Friday afternoon which is fine w me. 4 Stars for Service: was seated immediately and had two servers who worked w me on recommendations and service 2.5 - 4 Stars: So the food had different ratings cuz I ordered a Sampler and a sandwich meal. 3.75 Stars - 16 oz Sapparo Beer. It was cold, light and refreshing 3 - 4 Stars: Pupu Platter Sampler The star ratings reflect on the different items: 3.75 Stars - Coconut Shrimp. Medium size shrimp coated w a Coconut breading. Lightly fried, tender, and juicy. It came w a sweet Thai chili sauce which was 2 Stars- too sweet. 2.75 Stars - Spicy Cucumber banchon. The buttery bread was toasted perfectly but I was missing the East Coast mayo mixture. 3.75 Stars - Fries - you can choose 3 ways for the fries. Original, sweet potato or chili lime. I selected the chili lime. They were hot and the seasoning was good but needed more of the seasoning. It was served w chipotle aioli sauce that a little bit heat. It made the fries a lot better. 2 Stars - Sesame Slaw - it was a bust! Not good at all. Barely any sesame flavoring and zero acidity. You heard "Where's the beef" right. Family dinner night. Me and my brother in law wanted seafood, while the others wanted a variety of options. We all agreed on Pacific Catch. They are always solid. I had the Mexican corn, which is basically elote. It was delicious and had a good spicy kick. The pole 3 ways was also very tasty. They were sauced perfectly with also a bit of spicy heat. Pacific Catch is honestly an above average experience! Highly recommended for a casual social place. All of the seafood I've had here is super fresh tasting, nothing feels like it's been improperly stored. Pretty impressive considering their expansive menu. Their menu covers a bunch of different cuisine types, you have Japanese sushi, Latinx dishes like ceviche, they have asian fusion dishes, and things like a western burger, they can cater to a lot of different taste buds. We've had the same server several times and they seem to recognize and remember us. Very nice to our young kid and our family, sometimes bringing our elder parents. Food is consistently good. Drinks are also to my FIL's liking (margaritas). The ambiance can be noisy and busy but it's not bad. There are tvs for sports and what not, but it's always just a good spot for a variety of seafood choices. Someone can get fish tacos while another gets sushi or miso soup, and a fish dish with veggies. Overall, this is one of our regular go-to's for dinner every couple of months. I've gotten the fried fish tacos almost every time I go. I think the chef forgot to salt the fried cod because they were completely bland. Definitely the worst fish taco dish I've had there. As for my food I ordered the Ahi Chirashi which is essentially is a poke bowl. It comes pre-seasoned with their own sauce. The salmon has a mayo sriracha sauce, tuna had a garlic soy sauce flavor, and the ahi was basically seared with salt and sesame.
