We also got the fried cod taco, which was honestly really good- not overly fried and better than expected. We also split the spicy tuna sushi - this was pretty okay - I wouldn't say it was mind blowing but it was pretty good for the price point. My sister order the virgin margy and skipped on the drinks, but will definitely try next time because they all sounded really delicious. I'm always game for a new seafood restaurant, so while in the area I was glad to try Pacific Catch. Right in the heart of the well-trafficked tourist section of Santa Monica. Easy to get to. Street parking available. The restaurant is large, light, open and casual. Decor is simple but clean. Menu is extensive with plenty of light options to mix and match. We started with the salmon chowder. Had not seen that on a menu before and was worried it might be a little fishy, but it was not. Delicious, comforting, warm and just chowdery - I would order this again and highly recommend. We also had the yellowtail ceviche, which was fresh and both dishes were very ample in portion. We tried the trio of sushi tacos and the tempura shrimp roll. The fish was fresh and they were okay versions of themselves, but I would say that in a city with some of the best sushi in the country, I probably wouldn't order the sushi items again. The cooked fish dishes that I saw going by looked great so I would try one of those on my next visit. This apparently is a chain restaurant from up north but it doesn't really feel like one so kudos for that. The service was friendly and just right. My husband and I both ordered the miso glazed cod. My entrée arrived first, but it wasn't hot--it tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The fish was only warm, while the rice and vegetables were actually cold. To make matters worse, my husband's identical entrée didn't arrive until about 15-20 minutes later. We were seated at the bar, and the bartender/server clearly noticed that only one entrée had been served, yet never acknowledged the situation or checked in with us. I finally had to ask where my husband's meal was. She said she would look into it, then came back and told me there was either a 15- or 50-minute hold on orders because the restaurant was so busy--I honestly couldn't understand which she said. I completely understand that delays happen when a restaurant is busy. What didn't make sense was bringing out only one of our entrées and leaving the other person waiting. If there was a kitchen hold, why not serve both dishes together, or at least explain the delay before I had to ask? What disappointed me most was the lack of customer service. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, and the response came across as dismissive. A little communication and empathy would have gone a long way. read more

Yesterday (1/4/25) around 4 PM, I returned to Pacific Catch for another amazing meal! I was thrilled to discover they offer Happy Hour on weekends from 3 PM to 5 PM, with unbeatable prices and a fantastic selection. Naturally, I had to order my favorite, the Guaca Poke (original ahi poke layered with homemade guacamole, micro cilantro, and house-made tortilla chips), which is about $4 cheaper during Happy Hour. The drink specials were just as impressive--I enjoyed the Mango Daydream Hard Kombucha (a hard booch twice brewed with a tropical blend of mango, pineapple, and orange, perfectly spiced with a touch of cayenne pepper) for about $3 less during Happy Hour. For my main, I stuck with my usual: the Miso Black Cod (broiled miso Alaskan sablefish with furikake rice and sesame green beans). I swapped the green beans for their Thai Brussels (honey-lime glaze with crispy shallots), which I highly recommend. How did this place get high ratings?!?!? Worst and slowest service and worst food I've had in awhile. It was comparable to a chain diner experience. I looked up the gluten free menu on my own because they have a QR code. I ordered from the gluten-free menu and strangely, the waiter was laughing the entire time, also asking me if I was "sure the tacos were on the gluten-free menu". What??? ...I showed him. I ordered grilled Seabass tacos. I told him I had a wheat and an egg allergy. He assured me that the taco only had fish and pineapple salsa. So we put in our own trees and also ordered an appetizer. It was supposed to be shrimp ceviche. What came out was basically green avocado soup like material with what looked like two pieces of cut up shrimp thrown on the top. I could tell the shrimp was thrown on top because I had no sauce on it. OK whatever, we were hungry so we ate it and it was exactly how it looked. Tasted like lime and nothing more and soupy. Then wait brought us water and the glasses were disgustingly dirty. We didn't even drink the water because of that. Then our entrées come out and my tacos have a slaw on it with mayo. Mayo has eggs, which I'm allergic to. Also, NO pineapple salsa. The waiter never came back so I had to flag down the host. He was very sweet and asked if they could re-fire it but I declined because we were on a time limit. It took so long for food we had to renew our parking meter 3x! They removed it from my bill, but the food was disgusting, they almost gave me food with an allergy, the water glasses were dirty, and the appetizer was disgusting. A great addition to downtown Santa Monica by the Promenade! We came here for their soft opening and were not disappointed. Pacific Catch is located directly across from Hillstone's. They have a spacious indoor seating area and limited outdoor seating in the front that is surrounded by glass. They weren't offering a full menu when we visited but they had all the dishes we were interested in. Serrano ahi poke: 3.5 stars. My husband and mother really liked this dish. I felt like the texture was a bit mushy and the overall flavor profile was dominated by onion Cabo calamari: 4 stars. Portion was very generous. Calamari wasn't too heavily breaded and there were plenty of tentacles (my daughter's favorite). I loved the chipotle aioli. Spicy green curry grilled salmon bowl: 5 stars. They nailed it with this entree. Salmon was perfectly cooked and flaked easily with a fork. The curry was total comfort food. Nice assortment of veggies though nothing fancy. Salad was in good shape with nary a brown or wilted leaf in sight, and they were generous with the sunomono. Chocolate lava cake: 3 stars. The cake was a little too cakey for me with not enough lava. Strawberries were not quite ripe. Doesn't quite compare with Roy's, which is my standard in the world of Hawaiian food and lava cakes. Pineapple right side up cake: 3.5 stars. I preferred this to the lava cake, but honestly, I prefer a pineapple upside down cake. With this preparation, the pineapple didn't get a chance to caramelize and it wasn't all that sweet. Service was slow at times but they were friendly and did their best to be attentive. I'm sure it will get better with time. I'm sure we'll be back again. Pacific Catch has a lot going for it - convenient location, great fish (husband had the kanpachi, daughter had the salmon, mother had the black cod, and everyone loved their order), lots of child-friendly food, and plenty of mocktails to choose from. We started out with the Shrimp Ceviche, Coconut Shrimp, and Japanese Eggplant with a Hawaiian BBQ Sauce, which were all fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced considering the shareable portions. In addition, I had a Sapporo Light Beer and my wife had a Caramelized Piña Colada, that she really liked. After receiving helpful suggestions from Andrew, one of Pacific Catch's two managers, I ordered the juicy and truly delicious Grilled Fresh Kanpachi from Kona, Hawaii, with a light Hawaiian Red Salt Seasoning. It was served atop Kimchi Fried Rice, along with Crispy Brussels Sprouts. My wife had the Market Fresh Fish of the Day, Grilled Cobia from Panama, with a perfect Citrus Chimichurri Sauce It was served with Grilled Asparagus and Chile Lime Seasoned French Fries. She enjoyed her dish immensely. Both of our plates were quite large and we had leftovers to take home. For dessert, we finished everything off with a Pineapple "Right Side Up" Cake that was perfectly moist and buttery. So-o-o good! My son ordered the wagyu cheeseburger, which was soggy, overloaded with onions, and completely lacking in flavor. We spent over $100 on this meal, and I left disappointed and frustrated. The only positive part of our experience was the ambience, which was very nice, and our waiter, who provided excellent service. It was the first time to what I expect will be many visits to this new restaurant in Santa Monica: really loved it! A week before making dinner reservations, I had walked in to check out the vibe of the place and was suitably impressed. I asked what it had been before as it is a very large piece of property and I was told, "Oh it was that pizza place, 800°." To which I replied I'd never been there even as a longtime local. This is directly across from the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and the Bungalows nightclub and the closest parking is the 2nd Street city parking structure between Wilshire and Arizona. But back to the food. We started off with the fried calamari and although I am not a big fan of fried food in general it was an extremely light coating and absolutely delicious. I would definitely get this again. For dinner I had grilled salmon with the Asian chimichurri sauce and at first did not realize you get to pick two side dishes so I chose the grilled asparagus and the Mexican corn. All of these items were wonderful and the portion was quite adequate to even take some home. The service was also efficient and friendly and we had a lovely and lengthy dinner.
