Oh my where to start. Most Japanese restaurants have a Nabeyaki Udon but normally never had a Yosenabe. This one however did and it was wonderful. I also got the Hamachi Kama which was grilled to perfection and so full of flavor. This meal took me back to when my grandma would take me to a hole in the wall back in Hawaii. Definitely brought back wonderful memories. The service was quick. They weren't too busy when I stopped by so that was good, they also just opened for dinner not too long before so definitely good timing. The server was truly the sweetest. Stopped by here for a quick pick up. It's a small place. Service was friendly and a little slow. It took a while to be prepared when we ordered ahead via phone. We ordered 2 orders of Chicken Katsu appetizers, 6 Piece Gyoza, Kastu Donburi, & Beef Nagomi Ramen. For the chicken katsu appetizers we asked if it came with rice which we wanted them to, and the lady said they did. It was disappointing upon arrival at home and there was no rice included. We had to cook rice at home instead. The katsu pieces were crispy and the little one liked it, so that was good. Not a fan of the sauce it came with, though. 6 pc gyoza was good. We liked the sauce it came with as it was flavorful. Would reorder in the future. Katsu Donburi bowl was good. Would recommend and portion was just right. Nagomi Ramen - we asked for beef, but it looked like it was pork instead. It was pretty bland, which was disappointing. So maybe will get it spicy next time if we order again. Great portion size. Japanese food in ABQ is pretty difficult to locate. I was in search of authentic flavors, not Japanese fusion. I had Nagomi bookmarked and was glad we finally tried it! On this first visit we were hesitant to try any raw seafood in fear that the sashimi & sushi would not be the freshest. We settled on Pork katsu, Japanese curry and sukiyaki. The curry had an eggplant option as well as the usual katsu choice. The curry sauce was really good. Sukiyaki was good, but not what I would call traditional. We visited Nagomi on Juan Tabo for the Best of the City Sushi. We have our favorites, but we are always game to try something new. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very rude hostess who led us to a table without a high chair for our one year old-- and without asking if we needed any! I took it upon myself to get a high chair for him. It took a solid 30 minutes to order. Our waitress brought the traditional miso soup, which wasn't good, and our drinks, but didn't return to take our order for quite a while. I did ask for a little more time with the menu, however I didn't expect to get an extra 20 minutes! Once ordered, our food took another 30 minutes or so to come out. We ordered four rolls total, two of which were deep fried. When we received the rolls, we were immediately taken aback. One roll was not advertised as being deep fried, but was, and another roll that was meant to have mango on top... had been substituted with KIWI. Additionally, the way the fish was cut was uneven and poorly done, with some pieces being slivers of tough near-skin and others being acceptable cuts of sushi. Immediately upon trying one of the deep fried rolls, we realized it wasn't baked salmon on the inside, but raw and warm salmon. This may go to personal taste, but it was awful and made my husband queasy. Then the second realization: none of this fish was very fresh at all. You immediately got that fishy taste and smell that you should never have with good sushi. It tasted old and no other parts of the rolls were particularly fresh either. Worst of all, my husband and I had what could only be described as breath like a seal at Sea World on its birthday. I am truly shocked that Nagomi won the best sushi category. This was the worst sushi I have ever had. I'd like to think that my husband and I have good taste, too. Between the two of us, we've eaten the best seafood in Vegas and had one-of-a-kind omakase meals with five star chefs. We're realistic about the kind of sushi Albuquerque, New Mexico can possibly have.... But Nagomi? The best? I think not. read more

As much as I wanted to love nagomi, it wasn't for me. The service was great, the place and bathrooms were clean... but the food is where I personally felt it was lacking. The sushi was room temperature at best -- and 2 of the 3 rolls we got were (supposed to be) cold rolls... the food was good, just not my style. I'm writing this review after 3 visits and trying something different each time. I had high hopes and am pleasantly pleased with their food! The Korean kimchi soup is FANTASTIC. I inhaled the kimchi (pre cooked and cooked). The pork katsu makes my Father extremely happy since that's his favorite dish and they make it wonderfully. I was happy with the sushi I ordered on my 2nd trip. Today, I ordered a bento box with the grilled mackerel. It was perfectly grilled. Food was fantastic! By far the best and most authentic Japanese food I've had in Albuquerque. I did not try the sushi, as there are SO many sushi restaurants around and we were just so thrilled to find a place that had a full menu of noodles, soups and rice dishes. The atmosphere is not fancy or impressive, feels a bit like an undiscovered hole in the wall. Service was good, it appeared there were only two people working - a hostess and a server - but as there were only a couple other patrons in the place, we were well attended to. We have been going to this place for over five years. It has consistently been one of our favorite restaurants in Albuquerque and among the top sushi restaurants in town. Plenty of seating and one of the few places around that do authentic shabu shabu. The wait staff and the sushi chef are always very inviting and friendly, and as accommodating as they can be. Bento box comes with some four pieces of California rolls, pickled veggies, a bowl of rice, salad, miso soup, some fruits, and good variety tempura. We chose chicken karaage and pork katsu for the main protein. Tempura is very crispy and fresh. There are onion, pumpkin, shrimp, zucchini and sweet potato. Drinks are packaged can and bottle. This must have been my second time at this restaurant. I really enjoyed the food here and the service was good too. We came to have dinner at this restaurant. We spent quite a bit of time going through the menus -- there are many options to choose from -- shabu-shabu, bento box, udon, sashimi, sushi, etc. Since it's pretty hot outside, I settled for the rice tray set. Also we ordered natto for my friend to try. The natto was pretty good. My friend tried it for the first time and he said he was okay with a bit of strong after taste. I had the sashimi with rice and sides and it was very filling. I walked in the restaurant pretty hungry but left with full belly. I do not know why I haven't tried Nagomi before- my bad! I had lunch there today and it was excellent! The ambiance was quiet and relaxing, the service was good even though our server was serving the entire restaurant, and I can't say how much I loved the food! My partner and I each chose the bento box lunch special, only $13.50! It includes main of choice (steak, chicken, salmon, tofu teriyaki or one or two other choices, side of day (delicious fresh, flavored green beans), a huge varied selection of tempura including Krab, shrimp, sweet potato, squash and onion, tuna sashimi or spicy tuna or California roll, nicely dressed green salad, and a few bites of fresh fruit. The tuna sashimi was the best, freshest fish I've had in ABQ. It was on par with sashimi in Japan, and I was there for three weeks and ate sashimi every day. I can't wait to return! Next time I'll try Donburi, which is like chirashi but the sashimi is served over regular rice vs sushi (vinegared) rice. I highly recommend this place. BTW, I had salmon teriyaki and partner had chicken teriyaki, and both were perfectly cooked and not too salty. Nagomi also offers beer, sake (both hot and cold), and a variety of tea and soda. Dessert is mostly ice cream and mochi, but the bento box is so large that I challenge you to eat the box and dessert! read more

Another restaurant circling the drain. First, the chef/owner does not want to run his AC even on 100 degree days. Yes, let the customers sweat! I ordered the Chicken Katsu and a Sushi roll. The Katsu took like 20 min as they were filling take out orders. While watching the TV above the Chef, I saw him cough multiple times over the sushi he was working on without covering his mouth. Disgusting. Simple manners seem to escape this guy. I cancelled the sushi, paid and left. Two hours later I got bad diarrhea. Looks like the chicken was stored too warm or not cooked properly. I am really bummed to write this because I had really high hopes. I've read positive reviews and was so excited to try it. We got there and we were the only ones in the restaurant except for the doordash people that kept coming in and out. It took a full 45 minutes from the time we ordered our food until we got it. When the food came (bento boxes which were the specials of the day) part of it was hot (tempura) but the main protein was cold. Not room temperature..ice cold. At that point we were starving so we tried to eat it but it was overcooked, tough, and almost inedible. The one person at the table that had chicken took one bite and left the rest uneaten We told the server and her response was "oops, sorry..." I don't even know how to respond to that...we spent 60.00 on lunch and didn't even eat 1/4 of it... I REALLY wanted to like this place and have it be my new Japanese place to go to....I'm super disappointed. read more

I've lived in Albuquerque on and off for more than 20 years and this place is about 5 minutes from where I grew up, yet, I had never went here before tonight. I thought it was going to be some hidden gem that I would wind up feeling bad about not going to earlier. I was wrong. I decided to try the donburi because I had remembered this dish while living in San Francisco when I visited Japan Town and had loved it. For some time after I even tried making the dish at home, buy it wasn't the same. I hadn't seen this dish on any Japanese restaurants in Albuquerque so was excited to try it. It was not the same. The egg on top wasn't cooked enough for me and the chicken was tender but tasted fishy because of the seaweed in the dish. The menu did have a variety of other options and sushi as well as beer and saki. Maybe this is more of a sushi place, not sure. Having lived in Japan for many years I'm not easily impressed by most of the "Japanese" restaurants in Albuquerque. I went here on a whim because I noticed their menu had some items listed that you don't see at many other places, such as yudōfu. We were very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is Japanese-owned and serves a nice combination of authentic Japanese dishes and New Mexican/Americanized sushi rolls. This place was just okay. I didn't really have that much going for it. I thought the food was decent. I ordered sashimi and sushi roll. My usual's as a base of comparison. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The restaurant was kind of dark and gloomy and not the cleanest place in the world either. While it wasn't a bad experience it was definitely a one time deal. We used to live in Torrance, California, where there are so many great authentic Japanese restaurants big and small. So we know what authentic Japanese food tastes like. Last night, for the first time, we took a chance and ate at Nagomi here in Albuquerque. Wow!! The food was absolutely great! I had no idea that Albuquerque, out of all places, has such a great, authentic Japanese eatery, owned and operated by a Japanese family. We had Chef's Bento Box which was superb. The one I ordered had grilled mackerel which was absolutely out of this world, succulent and tasty. This Bento Box also had great assorted tempura as well as tuna sashimi and California rolls. Everything was so fresh! This is not a fancy restaurant. It's very casual, yet cozy. I highly recommend Nagomi. The owner talked to us after we ate. TL;DR: In my opinion, unfortunately quality of sushi and food has gone down. 1.5 stars rounding up to 2 for service. Tuesday night dinner visit. +FOOD+ ---Alaska roll (3 stars): Just okay. Nothing special; a little too much rice. ---Futomaki roll (3 stars): Just okay. Not especially flavorful. ---Mixed Natto (2 stars): Natto is interesting! But the sashimi mixed in with the natto was noticeably NOT fresh. The squid was slimy and fishy tasting. The razor clam piece was super sandy. ---Shrimp Tempura roll (2 stars): Shrimp tempura pieces were pretty skinny and avocado/cucumber filling was kind of light. ---Agedashi tofu (2 stars): Coating was too thick and sauce was too gingery. ---Eggplant miso (1.5 stars): Super tough eggplant skin and way too sweet miso sauce. ---Caterpillar roll (1 star): A tiny sauce packet(?) fell out of my sushi piece. Definitely not supposed to be in my sushi roll and speaks to the quality of the food. Eel tasted a little fishy. +EXPERIENCE+ Wait time for food was acceptable. The waitress was kind and gave my table 10% off the total bill after pointing out to her the inedible sauce packet in my sushi. I stopped in there to meet a friend for lunch and got there a little bit early by accident. I had some potstickers, and they were so great that I ordered a second course. When my friend finally came out ordered a Bento box, and I was shocked because I'm used to the tiny little bento boxes that other places have this lunch was huge. And I wasn't quite able to finish it all. My biggest complaint: I never did get the red bean ice cream that I had ordered, although I guess that's partly my fault because I sort of forgot about it. But still, they should've served it. I lived in Japan for a couple years as a kid and since then have dabbled in finding some good Japanese cuisine at nice little mom-and-pop places. Came in for a late dinner. At first I thought there wasn't much parking, but I looked to my left xD. Ordered Crunch roll and it was really good! Props to the chef. This is the first crunch I've ever had where the shrimp was freshly fried and was still warm. I also ordered the mackerel. It was cooked beautifully and had a good crisp skin to it. There were little bones in it that were soft and edible I didn't even notice. It came with couple sides. The roots/carrot side was meh. It was flavorless, maybe there for texture? The miso soup was overtly salty. The seaweed cucumber salad was really good though! The blood orange and pineapple surprisingly sweet and delicious! I ended with the Sesame ice cream it was good but $3 good. I like how it was a hint of seaseme and with every bite. I craved more but there were also some icy parts. I've literally driving by this place for years and never gave it a thought. (Exterior just yelled at me no!). However a couple of months ago I tried them for the first time. And I was astonished by the quality and high level of knowledge that the owner / sushi chef has. I've been a big fan of sushi for quite awhile. I've been to some really good places (California, New York, Georgia) and this one is up there. Don't let the exterior or even the interior fool you. We moved to NM from CA January 2020 and had not found a Japanese restaurant that I love--until lat night! This establishment rivals that of any of the best Japanese restaurants I've had in California. I am Japanese American and feel that I'm quite picky when it comes to the flavors. I couldn't be more excited to share this find. We had a little bit of everything--sushi, sashimi, bento box, udon and EVERYTHING was spot on. The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned. They even served several dishes that one would never see in run of the mill kinds of places. This is truly a great find!! read more
