    Rib plate and Lechon plate
    Michelle G.

Was looking for somewhere to eat, came across this on Google. Located at the Navy Exchange Mall it's an outside eatery. Decided on ordering the Lechon plate and Ribs Plate both $15. Not too bad. We didn't wait long and we were not disappointed. The Lechon was crispy (Filipino Lechon sauce would have hit the spot but the spicy sauce was good).. Ribs plate was good as well.

This is probably my 3rd time eating here. It was ok before, but this last time, it was the best. The Mac salad was amazing and unique as well (I'm usually not too excited about it). There were 3 folks working the stand and the order came out very quickly. That's a major win for me because I don't have a long lunch. It was pretty quiet and not very busy, but usually I see a decent line. As for as ambiance, It's outdoor, so make sure you're ok with the NEX's creatures roaming around. I will be back to try the ribs but this place did not disappoint.

Lechon closeup - meat was tender and juicy, skin crispy. Came with banana ketchup. I had it with chili pepper water and ponzu at home.

I was happy to see this bbq spot pop up about a year ago. Find them downstairs at NEX, in front of UPS. It's the nicest, largest stand down there. They do close at 3:30 during the week and 2:30 on the weekend so I kept missing them. Finally got to sample the lechon, turkey tail, and huli huli chicken. The food makes me feel like I'm eating at a family bbq. Not the best bbq you've had in your life, but it's better than most, plentiful, and feels like home. The service is friendly and the food is hot. It's absolutely worth what they're charging. The turkey tails had a nice flavor, and so did the chicken and pork. For one plate, they offered tossed salad or mac, then gave all rice. It's all good, I'll still be back. I appreciated the added touch of the kikkoman, bbq sauce, and banana ketchup inside the plates. I kinda hoped to see the Hawaiian red hot dog in my plate like I saw in some photos, but maybe next time.

Customer service 5/5 Local family & veteran owned, they were very kind & took the time to explain what's what. Ambiance 5/5 Located outside the NEX, grab a plate and head to the food court sitting area. AC indoors or the lanai area for a view of the parking lot lol Food 5/5 To me, this is comfort food. A taste of true island style bbq served with a smile! No feathers in the turkey tail (if you know, YOU KNOW!) & meats cooked to tender deliciousness. I believe I paid $25 for this plate & will not hesitate to buy it again if I'm in the area!

For the Huli Huli Chicken Lover's out there, there is a place located right outside of the Pearl Harbor called Pagaikiki's Kitchen and thanks to Braddah Manu for turning me on to this place. I ordered the Whole Huli Huli Chicken Chopped Up for $15 and I have to say this Huli Huli Chicken was probably one of the most Juicy and Tasty Huli Huli Chicken's I've ever had. But to me this Chicken was more like a Rotisserie Chicken Smoked with some Grill Marks so I was a bit confused. But all that aside, this Chicken was fabulous and for the $15 price tag well worth it. And big kudos to Uncle who cut up my Huli Huli Chicken. I swear this Uncle must have been a Surgeon in his early day because I have never seen anyone cut a Whole Chicken with such precision. Normally when Huli Huli Chicken is cut up they cut the Whole Chicken into bits kind of like how they cut up Roast Duck which makes it kind of hard to eat with all the bones But Uncle here cuts it to the point where he actually carves around the Back Bone where the pieces are rather easy to eat especially the Thigh Portion. You will be quite impressed how it's cut up. And I couldn't believe how much juice was just swimming in the plate which shows you how Juicy this Chicken was and not Dried Out. You can tell he takes great care when preparing this Huli Huli Chicken and I left very impressed. Uncle even gives you a little more of the Juice in a small plastic container as well. But in all honesty I never even used it because of how juicy the Chicken was. Now that I've tried their Chicken, my next mission is to try his Smoked Turkey Tails and Ribs as well and he even does Lechon but I heard it's more of the Samoan Version of Version and not the Filipino Style. This place is run by a very nice Samoan Family so I'm sure this is a Samoan Bbq Establishment and I can't be any happier because I'm definitely coming back for more. I might have to do the Combo Plate which has a little of everything for $25 but I heard it's pretty hefty. So if you guys are in the mood for some Killer Samoan Bbq and you are in the Pearl Harbor Area, coke give this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised how delicious it was. Ok so this was my second time stopping by. Both times were game changers. If your @ the NEX, this place is located outside near the main entrance. (Center entrance / NEX main customer service) I got the combo that has a little of everything price is great, food tasty, and staff so nice. We will be back

Combo has a little of everything, along with 2 sides (rice, tossed salad or mac salad). More than enough food for 2 hungry people.

Saw the food pics on YELP and had to see and try for myself. They're open from 11am-4pm, and are located right outside the NEX. Just follow your nose! The mouth-watering smell of bbq gives you the first hint of how good the food is. Got there around 2:15pm, no line, went straight up to the 2 lovely ladies and asked if they had a sampler plate with all of their offerings. The Combo Plate has everything plus 2 sides...I got rice and tossed salad. There was a rib, a huli huli chicken drumstick, steak, brisket...and there was more than enough food for 2 hungry people! I also ordered a huli huli chicken plate for my oldest daughter. Both massive plates plus a drink totaled less than $40. Happy Dance! The ladies were friendly and gracious, the food came quickly. I didn't have a chance to try their sauces because I wanted to taste the bbq for itself. Next time (tomorrow) I will be sure to try the sauce. Couldn't wait to get home and chow down! For those that prefer, there are ample tables should you wish to eat there. OK...food was so good! Meat had really nice flavor, meat falling off the bone on the ribs, steak was soft but still had a chew...did I already say how tasty it all was?! And they packed the plate. Fully intend to go back tomorrow to try each dish as a stand alone...starting with the ribs. If you're in the area be sure to stop by, I can guarantee you won't regret it!

Picked up lunch today and the food is so yummy, the BBQ ribs are so juicy and tender. The staff here is so friendly and welcoming. Keep up the great work. We will definitely be back!! :). Thank you.

Turkey tail plate and pork ribs/lechon plate
    Leila F.

Just tried a new bbq place located just outside at the NEX. They offer turkey tail, beef ribs, pork ribs, Huli Huli chicken, and lechon plates. We ordered Turkey tail, pork ribs, and lechon. The best item on the menu is the Turkey tail! Each plate comes with rice and choice of salad, Mac salad, or Kim Chee. Other items were also good but don't miss the Turkey tail!! Being Filipino, if you call something lechon it needs to have that crispy skin and usually served with a vinegar dipping sauce. However it was still tender. Try it out!!!

All I seen was the HuliHuli sign and it was over lol the chicken had great flavor. I like how they poured a little of the drippings on the rice. Service was quick. Definitely a great option when shopping at the N.E.X

Food was delicious!!! Owners are so kind and generous. My favorite was the beef ribs and smoked pork with that special sauce. Oh and the Mac salad was yummy too. Really enjoyed it.

The food was great until I got to the center of my chicken thigh.

The first thing I have to say is that the workers are super nice and friendly, especially the man cashiering in the front. He kept asking us if we needed anything. He offered more bbq sauce and gave us wet wipes. I have to give 5 stars for the service. The food was ok. I got the single item bbq plate $20. I got the ribs with baked beans and corn. My husband got the smokehouse salad $16. He got the smoked turkey with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, corn, onions, shredded cheese, topped with bbq and ranch dressing. My ribs were dry and were far from falling off the bone. We got both the original and sweet bbq sauces. I liked the sweet better. It had a hint of spiciness to it. The baked beans had a nice flavor, but my two corn on the cobs were the best. They were super buttery and sweet. We also got a sweet tea $3.50 that came with free refills. It was super sweet. Just dilute it with water and it was good.

Comes with brisket, mozzarella, onions and cilantro. I don't care for cilantro so I got my sandwich without it. It also comes with the birria consume. I thought the sandwich was really good. You can eat it without the birria consume and you wouldn't be disappointed at all. The thing is I don't think the birria consume pairs well with the sandwich. I think having it with the barbecue sauce would have been better for me. Everybody has different tastes so maybe get barbecue sauce on the side and you make your own decision. I love corn so I got the corn on the cob. You can choose the normal sides that most barbecue places offer like Mac and cheese, beans and slaw. Lots of parking which I like. John John was a really nice guy who welcomed us in and called me by name. The service is and great and friendly. Really has a nice diner feel where everyone knows each other. Good place to gather with your friends to have lunch and talk stories. They also have beer to go with your barbecue. That's a winning combination.

One can't miss this vendor because you can just smell the BBQ aromas from the parking lot - just follow that smell. There is a huge parking lot, which on weekends can get quite full. This business is also open to the public. We ate here years ago because that BBQ aroma was what lured us. But when we ordered then, although it smelled ono, the taste of the BBQ did not meet up to the expectation of good BBQ. The flavors just weren't there - just tasted so-so. We added this to the list of not worth a repeat places to eat. Flash forward several years later, decided to try them again. Got there late afternoon before 4:30PM. They closed at 5pm. I was greeted by a friendly man - maybe the owner?!? He informed me of the items that were out of stock - BBQ beef & the mix plate would be no beef but just chicken & pork. I wanted to get a BBQ pork stick but it was also not available. I ordered a chicken plate & a pork plate. The plates came with white rice & a choice of mac or green salad, & a drink - either bottled water or can soda. hubby got the chicken plate with double mac & I had the pork plate with white rice & salad. I thought the plates were very reasonably priced which includes a drink. Not too many places do that. Only $11 for the pork plate & $12.25 for the chicken plate. Pork plate - toss salad was good - crisp lettuce with shredded carrots, no brown lettuce. Rice was your typical white, sticky kind. Pork was thinly sliced. a good portion about 8 oz. I wanted to like the pork but it was burnt, dry, & tough. The flavor of the BBQ was good but lacked flavor, like it needed more salt. The pork tasted like it sat in the bottom of the warming pan for hrs & because it was close to pau hana time, I probably got just that. Chicken plate - mac salad - wasn't too bad but his chicken was also burnt. dry, & tough. He ended up only eating half of it & had to toss the rest out. Sad to say, no improvement from the last visit. They still got a 2-star rating because I still got friendly & quick service & the price point was good to include a drink with your plate. It will probably be awhile before I return & maybe next time go earlier in the day for fresher food, to see if it makes a difference vs before closing & getting the scraps.

Ordered by phone the day prior, and just gave them my phone number as usual (it's how they identify you when you pick up, with no worries about duplicate or misspelled names.). Every time I've ordered in advance, our order has always been packed neatly and ready in a box for takeout. (My brother had brought a box just in case, and smoothly offered it to their staff for someone else's future order.) The restaurant has several tables for dining in, and markings on the floor for those waiting in line. It's brightly lit and clean as well. I appreciate their staff, food, service, and generous servings. They make us look so good with our potluck contributions! So what did we order? Half chicken katsu, half chicken wings, a small platter ($45 for the small pan, but picture a much loaded tray) - it's a great value deal! It was the same order our cousins loved when we brought it on Christmas Day (they especially love the wings, but we love the katsu-so this year we asked for half-half instead of all katsu, and they were so happy, ha ha!) Oh, and they give you a nice big container of yummy katsu sauce;)! I like their panko and cooking method, as whatever they do, the chicken is nice and crisp, and tasty - with, or without the sauce, actually. First time that I actually tried the wings, as I'm not a wing person. (I didn't even try it at Christmas, lol.). But, it was nice and crisp, lightly seasoned, and the wings had lots of meat on them. Easy finger food, and they were not dripping in oil, either, which I appreciated! Also ordered (for the first time) a small platter of chicken chow mein (a little over $30?). It was based on a good recommendation by an admittedly biased family member of the owners, and we were pleasantly surprised! The small pan was covered in wrap and then foil, because the mound of noodles was seriously kinda big! My brother was like, quick, go tell mom to come look before we open it (as she's picky, so it's hard to impress her). It was filled with lots of veggies (sliced carrots, cabbage, onions, etc) and bbq chicken pieces, tossed with great flavor (I want to say it was a nice sauce, but this wasn't a wet noodle dish.). My dad added Chinese mustard soy sauce, but my mom and I thought it was perfect the way it was. Oh, don't laugh, we're only a family of four, so yes, we ate two meals - lunch and dinner - and still packed a ton of leftovers! As we watched the game, we commented to each other what great choices we had made. (We also had sushi trays and other treats, and of course, chips, and my brother's dip. My brother said we may not have had a favorite team to cheer on today, but it was a great excuse for a party, ha ha!) I know we're doing a repeat for our next occasion, for sure! We'll gradually try some of their other foods, and it's farther away than we'd like to drive (I know, it's not that far, but we live on the other side, ok?). My brother agrees it's worth the drive - it's across Aloha Stadium and literally in the same spot as Ice Palace; and we saw quite the line at the Taco Bell drive through when we were looking for parking;). He also compared it to the cost and serving size of what we ordered on New Year's, from a restaurant much closer to where we live. Hands down, it was not even a close comparison, his emphasis added. So go here, it's perfect for family dinners and potlucks and I hope you agree with my assessment;)! Oops, I didn't take any pictures, aiya!!!

My parents would stop pick up Soon's on the way to UH games at the stadium, a Saturday splurge (they were never cheap) when my mom didn't have time to make musubi and hotdogs. Maybe i'm suffering from "da good ole days" syndrome, but my first trip back to Soon's in about ten years left me Broken Hearted... VALUE: the portions were OK, Soon's always gave a satisfying portions but never "masu's massive" satisfying. I thought they used to drop a rubbery fried mandoo as a bonus side with your plate but i could be wrong and i got none today. AMBIANCE: it seemed cleaned up, definitely. but like when you see an old plantation house with a thick coat of bright glossy latex it just felt a little off in a less charming, trying-too-hard kind of way. For reference, I absolutely love the "Honesty" of Bob's BBQ on Waikamilo, and BBQ Kai in Waianae. FOOD: I ordered a couple BBQ Chicken and Meat Jun plates for some contractors working on my parents' house nearby, thought that was a safe bet but NOPE. I felt bad i gave the contractors the terrible meat jun i wanted to apologize was so embarrassing. MEAT JUN - (2/10, +one point cuz it didnt give me food poisoning). Soon's version always was thin, but today was Next Level chintzy. I dunno if the meat was over-pounded flat to stretch it out but even WITH the coating it was the SIZE AND TEXTURE OF BITING INTO A STICK OF STALE WRIGLEY'S JUICY FRUIT THAT WAS FORGOTTEN IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BACKPACK FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS DURING A HUMID SUMMER VACATION, but without the burst of fruity goodness. So maybe a more apt analogy would be texture and flavor LIKE BITING INTO A STICK OF CLAY. MEAT JUN SAUCE - (nostalgic 8/10). sweet and tasty, but Why do they give only that MINI thimble portion cup of sauce?!? THE CLAY-LIKE MEAT JUN DOESN'T EVEN FIT THE OPENING OF THE TINY %#@$ CUP!! BBQ CHICKEN - (solid 6/10). Always over-marinated, the classic soon's tasty but heavy handed preparation. Clearly benefits from nostalgia. OTHERS - the BBQ meat / bulgogi is also over marinated, with small/medium shreds of slightly dry and too-hard meat. meh. - the "banchan" tsukemono kimchee foil pocket of veggies was always a treat, but so small. plus the kimchee is super weak more orange and sour than truly tasty. The TREAT - SECRET IS TO POUR A PRECIOUS FEW DROPS OF YOUR TINY CUP OF MEAT JUN SAUCE OVER THE VEGGIES TO GIVE IT A TASTY KICK. VERDICT: I grew up with Soon's, but I want to remember them fondly so I'm Never going back. My parents still live in Salt Lake so I'm sad. Guess I'm just going to file Soon's away with the fuzzy old memories of Aloha Stadium, the Islanders, and the 'Bows v. BYU. Next time i need Korean bento I'm going to Gina's.
