Rose is genuinely amazing. I'd spent years cutting my own hair after traumatizing experiences with stylists who didn't know what to do with my curls--and then I found Rose. She's been cutting hair for around 40 years and has worked solely with curls for the past 12. She took one look at my hair and knew exactly what it needed (layers!), but she struck a perfect balance between offering input and listening to what I wanted. I was looking for a summer curly cut and highlights, but was disappointed. I found this salon with great reviews and was excited for my appointment with Jenn. I'll start by saying Jenn was super nice and answered my questions about color damage and made me feel comfortable. Color- we opted to do highlights and to prevent against damage, we decided to go light/ medium brown. The last time I got brown highlights, they looked beautiful and were apparent. This time, the color was darker than I thought it would be, but I was happy walking out with it because she said it would lighten up. It's been a couple weeks, and my color has not lightened- it still looks black (my natural hair color). So it feels like I don't even have highlights. Haircut- this is where the majority of my disappointment came from. We discussed cutting off a bit of damage but still keeping the length, but adding a bit of layering. What I didn't expect is to have an extremely short top layer, and a long bottom layer, making my hair look super disjointed and choppy. I'm devastated about my haircut, and I was hoping for a cute summer cut, and instead I'll be wearing my hair up all summer. Even half up half down hairstyles look horrible right now because of the very short top layer. It looks like I have weird clumps of hair on the bottom layer. I expressed my concerns to Jenn and she was super sweet and understanding about it, and offered to try and fix it. However, I probably won't be returning. I felt like my service ($350 including tip) was a waste of money, and I'm now very upset about my hair. I'd advise against going here for a curly cut. read more

I was tired of getting bad haircuts (my curls always looking heavy and dragged down). Initially my hair was long and heavy. I've always had a lot of hair so having it long just made it heavier for me. Jenn has changed my life! I had Maria cut my hair a week ago. I came in with pictures having had deva cuts before. I had expectations. My first clue that everything was not alright came during the shower. Normally stylists will ask if the temperature is ok. When your hair is obviously dyed like mine is they ask if you want the water cold. Maria just put me under hot water. We had already discussed my dyed hair. After I came out of the dryer I noticed the hair framing my face was uneven. She fixed that and took off the cloche. It was the opposite of what I asked for. I wanted my hair layered near my face and not by my neck. My hair was lying limply around my face and proofing out at my neck. She recut it so it was better which is why I'm giving her 3 stars. Update: I had bought an arc angel gel when I got my hair cut. The bottle was of an old design. When I wrote this I had not yet yes it. When I opened it up I noticed it was a lot more watery than what I'm used to. It was so expensive I suffered through and just used it though half of it ended up sloshing out of my hand. I just needed to buy my conditioner again so I ordered the gel as well. The color of the new one is 3-4 shades darker. I have never added water to it. I'm lowering my score now that I see what a scam this place really is. read more

I went for a "diva inspired" cut and style with Jenn. The salon is tiny but clean, cute & friendly and got me an appointment on fairly short notice. I have coarse, dry, wavy hair so on the plus side, I came out with the most sleek hair (zero frizz) I've ever had and learned the difference primer can make on my hair. On the other hand, the stylist gave me a quick cut, added product to my hair while finger coiling and just left me under the chair dryer until dry. When I emerged, my hair was much straighter than my normal (say a 2a) but she just shrugged and told me it needed to grow it out. On my very next wash day, however, I got a noticeably wavier/curlier result using my diffuser. She also didn't cut the hair at my nape, saying there was no point because I was growing it out but it quickly became bulky and stuck out randomly from under the upper layers. Despite my experience, I would recommend this salon if you have hair with tighter curls and you'd like to elongate them (the gal before me came out with lovely, silky, defined curls) but not if you've wavy hair that needs to be coaxed to its waviest/curliest self. read more

I just moved to the SJ area about 2 months ago and was in desperate need of a new deva stylist. Before I moved to SJ, I had gotten some color work done by my stylist back home. My roots had since grown out and the shape of my curls needed some TLC. I scheduled an appointment with Rose for a root touch up and deva cut. After looking at the health of my hair/curls, she recommended some color options that would prevent me having to come in every month for root touch ups. We also went over the shape of my curls and how to layer the cut. By the end of the appointment, Rose had worked a miracle on my hair! Hands down, the best deva cut I've ever gotten!! She layered my hair so well and we still preserved length. I love the color changes she made, it compliments me so much better than the prior color I had. I've had many Deva cuts in the past and loved the results. Since moving to San Jose, I'd been hesitant to get my hair cut. I was nervous to try a new stylist and knew the price would be much higher in this area. However...a year and a half later, it was time! I spent hours selecting a salon - started at the DevaCurl site, then poured through reviews for all of the certified stylists. I felt confident when I narrowed it down to Paizleys and one other salon. I'll start by saying Paizleys got my business because they actually picked up the phone. Crazy that I even have to say that, but the other salon took a full week to get back to me (and was booking a month out). Maria answered the phone when I called and squeezed me in that same weekend. +1 for Paizleys. Maria was super easy to talk to and made me feel at ease when I arrived. I showed her pictures (of my past cuts and other images from Pinterest) to give her a sense for what I wanted. I felt confident that I was in good hands. +1 again for rapport. Then the cutting started and my heart sank. It was shorter than I wanted. I knew my hair would spring up to be much shorter after it was styled. She asked if everything was okay, but there was no going back at that point, so I mentioned my concern but also told her I trusted her. I've had short hair cuts in the past that I loved, so I figured if I was going to drop a huge chunk of cash, I may as well walk out with a big change. Fast forward to the styling post cut/color. Every Deva cut I've had prior emphasizes the "hair flop". Post conditioner, you flip your head over, smooth gel over drenched hair and scrunch. When this didn't happen, I asked and she said the salon was too small because the chair is close to the door. So she used her fingers to twirl/create my curls, which results in a very different look than I would normally get. In the end, my hair looked like the dreaded triangle. It is a blunt cut at my shoulders with very few layers on the side/back. With tip I was out almost $350 for cut and color, and this is one of my least favorite hair cuts ever. I've given it a full month to see if I could learn to love it, but I'm still disappointed every time I look in the mirror. Maria was very professional and expressed concern when she saw I wasn't gushing over the results, so I give her credit for that. However, I won't be returning. This is the type of cut I would expect from someone who doesn't handle curly hair daily. read more

Its been about 10 days since i got my hair cut from Maria. I will say that Maria is really nice and welcoming and the studio is comfortable and clean. I came to see Maria because I wanted to shape/ layer my hair as its been over 2 years since my last hair cut (deva cut). most importantly, I specifically explained how important it is for me to keep the length of the hair (it does take a long time to grow curls!!) and she repeatedly said how she "is just taking a little bit off" . I asked to just give it a refresher (cut off the dead ends). unfortunately, Maria cut over 6 inches off my hair and left me with a short (chin length) haircut. Its absolutely NOT what i was wanting. when I left the studio my hair was still wet so i didn't see the extent of it, but when i got home and looked in the mirror i was honestly shocked. I am extremely disappointed as i was specifically seeking a curl specialist. I drove pretty far to see her and paid a lot of money for the specialty Deva Cut. since the haircut I've been putting my hair up, covering it with a hat or a scarf or braiding it. Well...I just got my hair cut by Jenn. I am so disappointed with the cut and the service. She took her time to recommend that I get it cut shorter and also suggested that layers will make my fine hair look fuller, which was nice. I gave her the OK but for whatever reason she just basically trimmed the ends a little....no layers. She took less than 5 mins to do that, shampoo, wash, dry a little styling product and I was out the door in less than 30 minutes. I don't feel she gave me her time or attention....maybe she just was busy with her other client or wanted to go home early. Classic What I Asked for VS. What I got While I do like this salon I was upset with my results because it was just a disregard for what I asked for. I think that my stylist, Maria, did not want to tell me she did not know how to do pintura highlights. For curly girls there is a certain painting method, called pintura, which stylists use for coloring curls. This method reduces damage of bleach and makes it so the hair doesn't look as frizzy and dry. Curly girls if you ask for pintura I would advise you see a picture of the colorist's work. I know this should be common knowledge by now but still I did not expect a Deva curl certified stylist to go this rogue! When I asked Maria to do the lightening I told her I wanted to keep a darker top look but just add some dimension and partial lightening. I did not say I wanted a fully head of highlights. I showed her the pictures below as my inspiration and in the end I became a blonde. I freaked out when she showed me. Maria was nice enough to tone it down but once your blonde there is really no going back. While I do think is looks good, when styled, I am afraid of the future damage and most of all it was not what I asked for!! read more

I had my first DivaCut with Maria. Omg my curls popped. Even the 2nd day. I loved that she involved my daughter while doing my hair. We both learned so much. After the $110 hair cut. Yes $110. I went and spent $130 on the products at Ulta. Which I was bummed she didn't offer to sell me products. But glad she didn't pressure me to buy anything. I'm originally from NYC and moved to the Bay Area. I wore my hair in box braids for about 2 years before deciding that was too long to spend in the chair and wanted to get my hair healthy again. I knew that involved a hair cut! It had been so long since I'd had it cut that I was sure wherever I went would insist I cut off huge amounts. I found Paizley's through the Deva website and chose it because they had two 'Art of Texture' stylists and my hair is mixed 4B and 4C. Maria happened to have availability at a time that worked for me, so I booked with her. As soon as I met her I knew I was in good hands! I was especially nervous getting my hair cut by someone who had straight hair, but she did several things exceptionally: 1. Talked to me about my hair history completely non-judgmentally 2. Let me know about the health of my hair as-is 3. Didn't cut a lot AT ALL (literally almost all of my length was retained because she let me know it was healthy, but needed shape) 4. Taught me about every step that she did along the way and made sure it was simple enough for me to recreate at home I left with moisturized, defined, well-shaped (but not boxy) hair that still feels and looks great the next day. Jenn is the best and I've been all around the valley w/ hair stylists I ought to know! First of all, I've been going to silicon valley hair stylists since 1988 from Sunnyvale to San Martin (I live in Morgan Hill). I work in high tech and by now, I'm not so young, so professional, age appropriate, attractive style (and now color is a MUST) are essential. I'm not a natural artist, and I need a style that also looks good when I do it. I have been going to Paisleys' for nearly 10 years and until Jenn completed her training always went to Rose. I began going to Rose because a dear friend of mine, also in her 40's raved about her and it showed in her gorgeous hair. No question, Rose is a gifted artist and offers her opinion based on your requirements and goals for your hair. However, I always have enjoyed Jenn's outlook on life back from when she was in school and the salon scheduler/support person. She is 20 years younger than me but so wise, kind and funny- I never felt uncomfortable speaking to her. She also is very stylish and well appointed physically and I really appreciate that because as I age and wear some non-standard sizes, I admire and have often asked her advice on makeup and clothing. I began going to Jenn because it was sometimes easier than fitting into Rose's schedule and Rose always encourages her newer stylists to develop their clientele accordingly I notice. I couldn't be happier. She's been doing my hair for 2 straight years and the color is so natural and beautiful and perfect for my age and lifestyle. I always get compliments on the cut- I barely need to ask her what to do and if I have a special request (more of this, less of that, tired of fill in the blank) she advises as expertly and confidently as Rose (with considerably more experience) does. I know everyone has a bad day, and I am not saying someone couldn't have had a bad experience, even with someone as even tempered and pleasant as Jenn, but i just don't understand how that can be. I literally look forward to my appointments not only for the tender loving care and expert guidance I receive but because I genuinely have come to think of Jenn as I do a close friend or family member. To say that she is rough is unthinkable. I can't even think of a time when Jenn failed to offer me something to eat or drink, and do everything in her power to make me comfortable while I sat there waiting for the color to set appropriately. All I ever worry about is that Jenn will move away- I can't believe my good fortune to have her as a stylist. She understands color and all its complexities and subtleties as well as hair products and makeup.
