Still about a three star experience although it has a potential to be a 4.5/5. The hostess situation is completely disheveled, as it was the last two times I came here, so they haven't worked that out yet. The sign says "wait to be seated", but there's no one attending the hostess station. This is a common, recurring problem here. After a solid five minutes of standing there with no greeting from anyone, a waiter sees us and comes over to ask how many. We tell him we have a reservation for three people, give him our name, and say he says OK I'll be right back. Let me see what I have set up. Off he goes, and we never see him again. So we stand there another 4 to 5 minutes, and a second waiter comes by to tend to us. We give our name and reservation details. He goes off, also never to be seen again. We wait another 3 to 4 minutes and a woman who looks like the hostess comes around and so for the third time we give our name reservation time and tell her that we requested a booth. She takes a long time, stacking menus and putting the paper part back into the menu sleeves, and then finally gets three menus together and takes us to a table. So then we have to say (again), no we requested a booth, and so then we have to stand by a dirty booth and wait for them to clean it. So the whole beginning of the dinner process is already a mess and that sets a terrible and frustrating tone for the evening. First experiences inside a restaurant are so important and they just don't recognize that here On to dinner. Our waitress comes over and she's lovely,friendly, and seems on top of things at the beginning . We order a couple of drinks and the meatball appetizer while we peruse the menu. A long time goes by and we get our drinks. And then another long time goes by with no appetizer appearing at the table and she comes to take our dinner order. (She had not yet read us the specials so we had to ask for what they were because we heard the waiter behind us giving the specials, but couldn't hear well enough to catch them-I'm pretty sure our waitress was gonna skip over reciting the specials-) . After again, another long amount of time our salads come out, but still no appetizer. So I mention..." we have a meatball appetizer coming right?". She says yes and heads off. (The appetizer should come before the salad, especially when it was ordered way before). So halfway through the salads, the meatballs come. Now I love a meatball and all varieties of a meatballs. These were super firm (like... it took a hard push with a knife to cut into them ), they were barely lukewarm, with a barely melted slab of mozzarella on top. Had they been hot, with the cheese nice and bubbly, they would have been pretty good despite being overly firm and super salty (and I love salt) Entrees came piping hot and were very good (mezze rigatoni and lobster ravioli, and a kids spaghetti) Garlic knots were delicious. Wine pour was great. I think the kitchen, not the waitress, was super slow which impacted our experience. And for a place that stays this busy, they need to hire a hostess to attend the front desk, so that guests are promptly welcomed and seating is managed efficiently. This is coming from a few visits, visit one: Christmas Eve last year, we made reservations for 7pm. When we got there we had to wait 15 mins, and could not find the hostess. It was super busy, it took 3 hours for us to get drinks, our food and finish the dining experience. Staff was short and it was clear they weren't prepared. Food came out finally and it was just okay. The pasta was kind of bland, but my salmon was good, just a smaller portion for the price. Second visit for drinks: I will say, the espresso martini is one of the best I've had. Bar tender was super friendly, we ordered apps, which were great. Food nice again took a while. Third visit: my mom and I went here for dinner on a Wednesday, the waiter ended up charging us 50$ more than we ordered, it was a mistake, we thought it was fixed but it was not and we noticed later. They weren't much of a help when I tried to call. Overall, it is not near worth the price. If you are stopping by for a drink at the bar that is fine, but don't waste your time or money. I hate giving bad reviews, but if this helped anyone that's all that matters. read more

Pretty nice atmosphere! Diego was our server and he was very knowledgeable about the menu and nightly specials. I had a wine question that he answered and helped me decide on a wine. I ordered the veal Marsala, hubby got the chicken Sinatra. Let me rave about the garlic rolls! Soft, buttery, garlicky and warm. So delicious! Next came our fresh and crispy house salads. Our entrees were outstanding! Beautifully presented and so flavorful. I ate most of mine but the Hubby couldn't finish his chicken Sinatra. The chicken marsala was rich and well-balanced, and the lobster ravioli was genuinely impressive -- flavorful, well-executed, and clearly the highlight of the meal. The surprising part? Ive had this restaurant on my list for a while and finally had a chance to go. I loved it - from the cozy atmosphere to the truly excellent service to the delicious food. We had cocktails and entrees and everything was fresh, and well prepared and seasoned. The portions were a good size (I especially loved the big salad that came with my meal) and the garlic knots were amazing. I had the pasta with a white wine clam sauce - so fresh and light. My husband had the lobster ravioli and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to going back! read more

It's been awhile (5-6 years ago) since I've been to Palermo that I thought I would try it again. Not disappointed. The interior still looks the same and the food is still wonderful. I tried my usual Gin Bloody Mary and it was just okay. Nothing to rave about. I just can't find that perfect mix. The bruschetta was good, nice balance of balsamic, basil and tomato. Only wished the tomatoes were a little smaller. Hard to keep them on the baguette. Most of them fell off when I took a bite. Followed by a standard house salad of iceberg lettuce but the dressing was to die for. My entree was the Veal saltimbocca with a nice marsala and mushroom finishing sauce. Overall it was a very nice meal. Dillon our waiter was very attentive but not too pushy. He answered all our questions and was very polite and helpful. Mariana and staff hosted our family to celebrate my mom and dad's 70th wedding anniversary. We came with a party of 30, and Diego led a wait staff that exceeded expectations. Our dining room was beautifully done. Shrimp and antipasto misto for apps and salmon, chicken sinatra and truffle ravioli for entree. The food and level of service was impeccable. I was drawn to Palermo for the family vibes I experienced on prior visits, and this event had all of the family flavor that we were seeking. The food was delicious. We got the roasted or sautéed vegetables and we asked for marinara on the side and it was so good. We also added a piece of salmon with that. If you like fresh homemade biscuits with olive oil this is the place. Our friends got lasagna and I think spaghetti with bourbon sauce, but they loved it. It's one of their favorite places. Also they gave the birthday boy, a free cannoli. The waitress was extremely pleasant, kind and patient and the manager was the owner very involved. This is very difficult for me to write this review. I have been a consistent patron of Palermo's for at least a couple of years. I am in there 1 to 2 times a week. I almost always sit at the bar since I am one person, and I enjoy the other patrons as well as the bar tenders. Honestly, every time I place an order for food, I have to wait at least an hour and sometimes longer to be served. This past Friday, I waited over an hour to get my bruschetta. Well, I didn't even receive the bruschetta, which was a happy hour special. I was given the burrata. The bar tender did offer to bring me the bruschetta, but I said it was fine. My point is, I was willing to eat the burrata because it is good and I didn't want to create a problem. The bar tender never approached me again. I had been there 2 hours at this point. The gentleman behind the bar asked if I wanted anything else, and I said I had planned on getting the muscles but since it had taken over an hour to get my one and only dish, I was not going to order anything else. Also, when I arrived, there were only 10 patrons at the 2 bars so they were not busy. It never got any busier. I am not sure if the orders are not being put in or if they are constantly short in the kitchen It is quite upsetting. Overall, the food is very good. The service is lacking. This is my mom's go to restaurant and I found the wine to be absolutely amazing. The Montepulchiano was excellent! Let it breathe,,, we finished every drop. I like northern Italian and by the look and taste of the crushed tomato Marinara sauce (very bland) this is Southern Italian cooking. I went for the Cheese Ravioli and like many of the reviews the pasta was watery and the sauce bland. I would not order it again. I didn't try the bread, and it came with a house salad. The house Italian dressing is creamy. Our server said it contained mayonnaise. Nope not for me. I went with oil and vinegar. Another person had the steak, which he asked to be butterflied and cooked well. That usually means dry, but not here. His steak was cooked to perfection, tender, juicy and flavorful. So 50/50 here. We sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance. Had amazing service with an Italian accent, and the wine was the best Montepulciano I have had in a very long time. This place is now a favorite!! I was recommended to try this place. Apparently, it's their favorite restaurant to go to. It looked a but fancy from the outside but U thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did! Contrary to the exterior, this is a very homely neighborhood kind of like restaurant. It seems most everyone who works there are either family or have worked there so long that they're family. The camaraderie was apparent and everyone did their part. Even the owners would come out and seat people and clean up tables! I have a soft spot for places in which there isn't a hierarchy of staff vs owner/manager. The food is DELICIOUS. It's freshly cooked and served, and seasoned just right. The servers are knowledgeable and offer suggestions. I love this place and it's going to be at least monthly but hopefully weekly haunt! 10/10 recommend! read more

First up are the rolls! Always need to balance out your pasta with some bread , and all entrees here come with amazingly warm crescent knot rolls, basted in 【B】【u】【t】【t】【e】【r】 and olive oil and dusted with Parmesan and herbs. Also included was a salad, of which I chose the house with blue cheese dressing. If you're a blue cheese dressing ȧḟiċiȯṅȧḋȯ, you'll appreciate the large chunks of blue cheese in this one! Super creamy and tangy. Next up, I went for the mezzo maniche bolognese. This dish had halved rigatoni pasta (half-sleeve) with a blend of ground veal, pork, beef, and pancetta in tomato sauce with a touch of cream. The flavors in this dish are incredible and the pasta has a perfect al dente texture. The food is a warm hug to the stomach- will definitely be back soon! Tip: the outdoor patio area has a lot of charm complete with string lights, trellises covered in wisteria, and a wooden pergola and is a super cute spot to enjoy dinner (weather permitting). read more

I had my birthday dinner here! Made reservations a week ahead and when we showed around our reservation time we were informed that they're very busy and running late. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. There were 5 of us. Owner walked by few times while we waited informing us that people who were sitting at the table we were supposed to be seated are not leaving yet and they overstayed lol. After waiting for at least 30min she came and got us and took us to our table. I do have to say they were busy and a lot of people were waiting for tables. We were seated in bigger booth just enough space for 3 adults to sit on one side. At times it got pretty warm in our area I guess AC was having hard time cooling the space and they had ceiling fans on too but not much help. Definitely no need for a sweater or jacket! We ordered some apps - mozzarella sticks - you get 4 big ones with some side marinara to dip in they tasted pretty good and def can be cut in half and shared among few people! We also tried grilled calamari - nice and smoky very tasty mixed with artichokes, tomatoes and arugula, a bit too salty for me though! They give you a complimentary warm rolls that were delish except all the garlic butter that was poured over them and then sat on the bottom on the basket. I wish they put the sauce on the side so we could dip bread in it! I also tried their Italian wedding soup - not impressed with it, broth had very little flavor as well as meatballs! After we finished with our appetizers then wait for our entrees started. We waited at least 45min to 1h so we figured that's probably what also kept people seated before us sitting at our table after our reservation time. I guess kitchen was running late! Our waitress came few times to give us an update and refill waters too. When we finally got our meals 3 were lukewarm and two were steaming hot! I had pappardelle carbonara and while taste was nice and pasta had good bite it was barely warm and very dry. My husband got Stromboli pizza - it was nicely stuffed but inside was almost cold, cheese wasn't melted and green peppers were almost completely raw and they overpowered everything else in it, also pizza dough was really thin not crispy at all almost underbaked! We also had cheese manicotti - tasted good but on the edge of being burnt! Sea scallops entree was pretty good but barely warm! Last dish we had at the table was Shrimp Fra Diavolo - huge portion and piping hot and I'm assuming tasting pretty good since I didn't hear any complaints from person who had it! Since it was my bday I got complimentary cannoli that I did enjoy and it was very tasty with crispy shell and nice cannoli cream filling! read more

Mother's Day Mystery. Why was the restaurant functioning with only three waitstaff on the known busiest day of the year? Why did we place reservations for a part of eight and still have to wait 30 minutes beyond the reservation time to be seated? Why did we have to wait 15 minutes between drink, appetizer and meal orders? Why were alternatives served without notice? Why were stewed tomatoes instead of marina served on undercooked pasta that had not been drained? Our waiter, God bless him, was doing his best, but he was stretched thin. He was waiting tables everywhere. Served and bussed my share of tables in the day to recognize wait staff stress. The redeeming grace was our three mothers at the table were recognized. Beyond that, nothing to write home about. Probably last visit. My recommendation, look elsewhere. Overpriced and in the weeds. read more

Worst $90 take out meal ever. Didn't get everything ordered/paid for. Asked for a particular salad dressing, but received house Italian. Chicken parm and fettuccini Alfredo were bland and tasteless. When I drove back to Palermo to discuss with the owner, her response was "don't come back." No apology or question how to remedy. Very stubborn. $35 for chick parm and a side of fettuccini is a joke! This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Richmond area. I grew up with a Sicilian grandmother who cooked authentically, Palermo delivers those fond food memories every single time. I have never had a bad dish. The owner walks around and checks in with people, I don't go into any place anymore where I'm regularly greeted and checked in on by the owner. Palermo is one of our favorite restaurants. We order takeout from them regularly and go in person every now and then. We had reservations for Christmas Eve and were really pleased with our food that night! The only complaint was that the booth we sat in was squished so we had to share a bench side. I couldn't fit on one side bc there wasn't enough room, and no I am not a large person. Our servers have always been friendly and available, checking in at a good interval. As for food, it's all good!! The portions seem extremely large in person and a little smaller for takeout, but still a solid amount. Some favorites: White pizza - DELICIOUS!!!!! Great amount of ricotta and oh so good.....that reminds me I still have 2 pieces in the fridge from the other night- sounds like lunch to me! Chicken parmesan! Note it does not come with spaghetti, so we order a side of spaghetti, which is large enough to be someone's dinner. Salad! I know it sounds weird, but the homemade house creamy Italian dressing is my absolute favorite salad dressing of all time. Chicken francese. Very yummy when I want a simple takeout I get this with a salad. Also not served with spaghetti. Gnocchi Palermo. Seriously yummy and a comfort dish. The garlic knots are not my favorite, but hubby likes them a lot. They are covered in garlic butter. Too much for me. Make sure to give this place a try. My limoncello martini was divine, and was definitely worth the price. Our server was Brian. He was a professional by all means. Excellent service and friendly with us. We really wanted to like this place, but it was a frustrating experience. The waiter was nice but struggled to serve with all of his tables. We were never offered bread, I was served the wrong cocktail, and my son was served spoiled milk (I tasted it. It had gone rancid.) To be fair, the waiter apologized for the milk, but we didn't see much of him after that. He did pop by an hour in because the computer had a glitch and he needed to retake our order. It took almost two hours to get our lackluster iceburg lettuce salad course, and we finally asked for bread seeing it on other tables. When the food was served, it was solid, but by that point, we were all starving. We will not be back, but I could see without the many mistakes and extended wait, others might have a different experience. read more

Diner's beware! the owner/manager is Rude! Went for dinner, my food came out without the pasta so I asked for it. 10 minutes after I got my chicken, it came. That's forgivable but the chicken, it was hard(overcooked) and burnt. Normally I wouldn't complain but it was inedible. the server was very understanding until the older woman came over and as I explained the issue, she lost it! The worst customer service I have ever received. I think I was in shock the way she reacted to me explaining the issue as she insinuated I didn't immediately tell them it was over cooked which I find funny once by time my food came, the rest of my party had eaten their dinner. I understand things happen, I worked in the food industry for years. But to be spoken to with such disrespect was disgusting. And from other reviews I've read, I'm not the only one. there are better places who appreciate the business. read more
