Long overdue review. I've been coming to Palermo's since childhood. I honestly believed it was the standard for pizza and could not imagine anything different. All pizza would be THIS good, right?! Omg I was very wrong. Now, at least 30 years later and after living in multiple locations from East to West and even overseas. I can now say it IS the best thin crust pizza, back then and still today! Crisp cracker thin crust on-top of cornmeal (this small detail does make a difference), sweet and thick red sauce, with loads of mushrooms, olives and giardinera, some cheese plus oregano on top. This is my pizza expectation, found right here at Palermo's on 95th. **I noticed a slight slight difference between carry-out pizza vs eating-in the restaurant? (Yes I had the same toppings too). Big difference between pizza at the carry out and in the restaurant. I ordered medium sausage & onion thin crust on Friday dining in. It was the same wonderful pizza I have had since a toddler (52 yrs ago). At 3 years old I learned that pizza came in a paper tent and it was the most amazing thing ever! Today (Sunday) I ordered the same pizza from the carry out service. Who are you and what did you do with my pizza?! The carryout pizza had a completely different crust. The sauce was the same but I would swear the cheese was a slightly different mix or consistency The take-out crust actually detracts from the pizza. I live in Virgina now and make a point to drive to Palermo's whenever I am within 2 hr of the 95th & Cicero. That carryout version of sausage & onion thin crust is definitely not going to bring me back... the sit-down-version with the cyst that is nearly like a saltine cracker ... definitely worth the drive. 1961 to 2018 is a dynasty... a dynasty built on the foundation of a unique pizza crust... the crust is just as important as the sauce and the sausage. 4 stars overall? Huh. I am doing two stars and methinks I am leaning on the generous side. Came here in the afternoon on a weekday. Tons of staff, very few diners. And everything took forever! To begin, we had no problem with parking. Most likely because it was a weekday afternoon. We were seated quickly and given water and bread. We ordered drinks, we ordered appetizers. It seemed the waitress should have taken our food order sometime with, after, in between the drinks and appetizers, but she didn't. So, we had our appetizers and after the plates were cleared, she came back for our orders. But wait - while we were eating, the busser took the appetizer platters and scraped whatever sauce was left on the platter onto our individual plates that we were eating from. I am not kidding. So, we ordered food. It took forever and was really disappointing. What I got, what most everyone at the table got was a gigantor portion of anger hair pasta in oil. Mine came with a small sliced potato and about 3 oz of chicken. No flavor, no sauce, nothing better than what I could do at home myself. The cost for my entree? $18.00. Ouch. Not worth it. Came to visit here since it was a spot we wanted to try for a year . They seated us right away which is surprising for a Saturday. The food we ordered was amazing along with the drinks. You cant go wrong with the food and drinks. It was very interesting to see management allowing people to walk around with no mask . There was a party going on with about 10-15 people. We sat next to the venue or the hall where the party was being held. We were completely uncomfortable with the customers just running in and out with no mask on. There prices.went up big time to get a ok pizza from them . and at one time you would be able to get coupons in the mail to save a buck or two on your order. I will say the girls that take your order and at the counter for pickup are very nice and friendly to deal with . So Palermo go back to your old self rating of 5 Stars and think about the people who have been there for you to make Palermo's a great old neighborhood restaurant. read more

I just have to say thank you to Palermo's for being so kind and accommodating to my family and friends. There was a mix up for our reservations for a funeral luncheon, and reservations were never made. Fifty people showed up and Palermo's and without hesitation took us in and provided us with a wonder luncheon on short notice. Everyone was so gracious to us. My cousins and I love the food at Palermo's and have always been able to split the checks between four of us. Last night we told the waitress we needed to split the check when we sat down but when we got our bill everything changed. It seems they have a new policy to only split checks for 2. Beware of this terrible practice that they clearly didn't tell the wait staff. The manager we talked to was very disagreeable and surly. We ordered the extra thin and crispy sounds yummy we first had drinks a chianti for Jim and I had a moretti la Rossa dark beer Love this beer great flavor Food wise 2 salads with Italian and a medium thin sausage onion mushroom and black olive The salads were good as usual nice crisp greens and a great dressing tangy The pizza comes and Jim's eyes are like saucers! The toppings all look great! First bite and it's a very very thin and crispy crust quite different in a good way . The sauce is a bit on the sweet side but very good , add a little crushed red pepper and it balances out nicely. I must say this is a very good pie . No wonder there so busy . Depends what you're going for- the thin crust is great, one of the best in the city, the crust is soft which i like, and the sauce has a little sweetness to it that i really enjoy, however i do not like the deep dish, it's way too much crust and too filling in terms of other food, the swordfish was solid, and the sausage filled peppers were great as an app, if you want to dine in go to the location on 95th, it's way nicer and bigger than the other one read more

July, 2018.. I've always had pizza or pasta here and it's always been great. Wasn't super hungry this time, so I had pasta fagoli soup, which was rich and delicious. I also ordered an Baked Italian Submarine sandwich. It sounded like great ingredients, and it might be, but the way it's served is almost impossible to eat as a sandwich. It comes open faced with the meats and cheese spread across the French bread. The tomatoes and cucumbers are also spread across the bread. Here's the problem..... In order to pick this up and eat it like a sub, you have to remove the ingredients and cut them to fit on the bread so you can close it with the other side of the French bread. Is this meant to be cut in pieces and eaten with a fork? I don't know. I was disappointed. It looks pretty, so kudos on presentation, but I'd rather have something come to the table ready to eat. Maybe the back of house or management should consider this. I don't know if they've ever actually tried eating one as is. read more

Monday December 4 @6:30 Ordered a delivery large pie and Italian beef. Gotta give them the hour delivery time due to COVID. Delivery destination less than 1.5 miles away. At 7:30 the delivery arrived. The beef and fries were cold I could tell by the temperature of the bag. I Pull a dollar from the tip. The pizza was not hot , warm at best. The cheese slid two inches too one side . Cheese was to cold to move back into place. So the delivery guy got a $1 Something a tip . Should have been a three dollar tip. Beef has a very strong rosemary. Lean beef good. No auju or pepper . Fries taste like the oil is a year old. Maybe they used the fish fryer by mistake. . I get the hour wait . With the ever growing expense of eating out . I deserve better quality of food and service. You still have the responsibility to get people healthy hot food. I read more

Made arrangements with Dorothy for a funeral luncheon. My wife spoke to Dorothy for about a half hour to set up the luncheon. Once there had to ask where to go. The room was in back of building. Women's restroom toilet did not flush and no paper towels at first to wipe hands. Once food was delivered no further interaction with staff to see if everything was alright. A tip jar was at the beverage station, which $$$ was put in. With the passing of a love one didn't notice until later a $109.99 room charge was added to the bill of which I paid a tip on. Since The beverages were not separated on the bill paid another tip besides the jar. During our half hour discussion to set up luncheon room charge was NOT mentioned. Dorothy said we should have asked. Why would we ask? It should have been stated . Having complained Dorothy hung up on me. read more

I went to dinner tonight as one of the three of us wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before and that also had a bar. The parking lot was packed, so it definitely had me thinking that the place was really good, as people were in there. There's only a limited amount of space you can park your car in, as the spots on the left side of the street are designated as belonging to someone else, and the cars that park there will be towed. We found a space, and walked inside the restaurant, which was adorned with a lot of italian themed murals, paintings and pictures of the food. One of which who'd come into play later. We sat at the bar while waiting the 10-15 minutes for our table and the third member of our party. While at the bar, which is small but had a television playing the Bulls game (yay), we decided to indulge in a drink (Grey Goose on the rocks with a lemon twist for my companion, a martini for me). The drinks were great. And with the two being 7.50 and $9, respectively, I will be back, if for anything but the drinks. Our third companion showed up not too long after our table was ready, and ordered a pomegranate martini as we all caught up on events of the day. While we kept seeing people carry out pizzas, I opted to get the linguini with mussels tossed in garlic and oil, one companion got veal milanese with linguini and tomato sauce and the other got linguini with grilled chicken tossed in garlic and oil. As we waited for our entrees, we were offered plenty of bread and butter, and while the butter was in those terrible gold mini bucket like packets (I am not a fan), the bread was warm. As the conversation continued, salads that came with our entrees arrived. They were not anything special, garden salads with carrots, lettuce, grape tomatoes and a big ol' hunk of cucumber, dressing on the side. The amount of dressing in the cup was great, as I usually can't get enough and end up with a dry salad and having to ask the server for more. Today, this was not the case. Our dinners arrived after an appropriate amount of time, and we noticed that the restaurant probably was no longer taking tables, so we probably were one of the last to come in. My veal ordering companion was disappointed that the veal came with no sauce, but the skin on it was crispy. To me, it seemed to be breaded too much, as in the ratio of meat to breading, but my exposure to veal has been limited. My other companion seemed to pick at her plate, but she's always doing that. She didn't complain, so I take that as her being ok. Not good or bad, but OK. Me, however...I loved the mussels dish. I was satisfied with the amount of mussels to pasta, and I was glad to see that the garlic and oil sauce wasn't gloopy or thick, but instead more like a white wine sauce. Honestly, after two martinis, there may have been white wine in there, who knows...I was a little tipsy, as I said "Eep chequipment" instead of "cheap equipment" in conversation. We did not stay for dessert, but that'll be something we get on the next go round. Speaking for self, I will be back. read more

This is our favorite take out pizza. Decided to dine in for our anniversary. So, the pre meal bread was absolutely delicious. The Italian dressing that came with the salad had no flavor, but my wife's blue cheese dressing was delicious. All meal portions were extremely generous. So many people like to take shots at Olive Garden for not being an "authentic" Italian restaurant but what they have over Palermo's is freshly grated cheese at the table. We had a glass jar with a shaker lid and a mostly solid ball of cheese inside. Overall a nice place to eat, the men's room had absolutely no water coming from the faucet. read more

After a number of times ordering delivery, I finally got to eat in the restaurant. Pros -For the pizza, you have to get it crispy style. Both are good, but this was my first time ordering crispy and it honestly might be the best thin crust pizza I have ever had. We ordered a cheese and buffalo chicken, both were outstanding. Be sure to try a pizza with their signature sweet red sauce, its amazing. -Variety of other menu items if pizza is not your thing. -Pizza reheated well the next day which is huge plus. -Good sized restaurant with lots of seating -Bar inside with a handful of TVs -Parking lot in the back with an area for pickups -Offer delivery Cons -A bit pricey, especially for pizzas but pretty on par for what you would expect to pay across Chicago. I got a grilled veggie panini with pesto, zucchini, eggplant and tomato - it was pretty good and the fries were seasoned and crispy. We ordered calamari and cheese sticks - man, it was really bad, like old, reheated and tasteless bad. I had never been to Palermo's bu t heard it was a Chicago classic. Luckily, they opened one in Revival Food Hall as part of the pizza city rotation. I ordered a full pizza and waited for about 20 minutes. I got the Palermo Special and it was delicious! They put a ton of toppings on and it's a very filling pizza. Thin vs Xtra Thin - The xtra thin is more of the true tavern style. The thin is more of the famed route 80 country thin pizza. I personally love the route 80 county thin and this crust held up to some of the finest. While lacking flavor, it was done perfectly. - The xtra thin draws out the sweetness factor even more. - The thin is layered on thick with cheese and sauce Toppings If you go with toppings, the Sausage is the best topping at Palermos and helps cut the Willy Wonka Sauce.
