After getting a fresh haircut a few doors down, I was hungry for breakfast, and in the mood to try something new. Not a chain either. I have lived in New Braunfels for about 10 years now and I have driven by this place about 1000 times. My neighbors had told me this place was their go to, so, breakfast it is. I strolled right in. I walked past the "Please Seat Yourself" sign and proceeded to pick my piece of real estate to prepare for my feast. Shortly thereafter, a friendly young lady brought me chips and salsa and a menu. I am generally not much for chips and salsa at breakfast, but that still did not deter me from partaking. Chips and salsa usually set the tempo for me with a Mexican restaurant, so I wanted to gauge how this trip would go. Usually if the chips and salsa suck, the meal will too. The opposite if the chips and salsa are the bomb diggity. I ordered a sweet tea and perused the menu while trying the chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were good, so this is shaping up to be great. They were not the bomb diggity, however, still good. In short time my tea arrived, and I had decided on the #5, Papas con huevo. Translated for the gringos, this means potatoes with egg. Included were bacon, sausage, beans, and two tortillas. I had requested the bacon crispy, as I hate chewy bacon. Chewy bacon is as useful as a football bat. After reading the news on my phone and catching up on some emails, I glanced around and looked at other plates. Some folks were eating lunch, and the enchiladas next to me looked delicious. My food arrived shortly thereafter. The plate looked delicious, so I jumped right into my plate. Not one single complaint. I even spiced it up a little and put the salsa on my eggs. How's that for a gringo? Every bit was delicious, and the homemade tortillas paired nicely with the dish. After eating, my waitress was scarce. I was ready to pay my check and leave, so I ended up staying a little longer than I wanted. After a longer than usual wait, my waitress arrived with my check. I paid, then took off. This did not take anything away from the trip. I tipped my waitress generously, but I will pick another one next time. I highly recommend this spot. Especially for breakfast. We ordered 5 tacos bacon egg and cheese, bacon, and egg, and a sausage, egg and cheese Tacos were slimy like the steam on the tortillas or water got on them by mistake and the cheese was like rubber, talk to the manager she kept arguing about they don't taste like that even though we have been to this location many times and have never experienced this. We had a most wonderful breakfast there today. We went in thinking a couple of breakfast tacos but no way, the breakfast menu choices looked too good. I had the two eggs (over easy), potatoes, 2 (nice and fluffy) pancakes and sausage plate for $7.99 and it was all delish! Particularly the pancakes because they were nice and fluffy and didn't have that greasy taste that some places have. The only complaint was that the breakfast sausage patty was a bit small for what I thought it should be but that didn't diminish from my breakfast delight. The restaurant was well spaced out for Covid CDC guidelines and their lunch and dinner menu looked good enough for another visit when we come back to NB (and we will). read more

Wife and I love Sunday mornings at the Palm Cafe, but get here before 10 to avoid Sunday after church rush. I have never been a pancake fan until I ate them here. The are light fluffy and so damn tasty that I crave them and my Sunday morning staple is the Palm breakfast. It is eggs, pappas, beans and barbacoa. And pancakes. Love the barbacoa and the pancakes. I was ready for more after reading fellow members' reviews of this place, and I must note that most are reviewing their breakfast. That said, this place now serves lunch and dinner. Upon arrival the waitress brought chips and salsa; the chips were thin and homemade, and the salsa was that thin red to orange type, the kind made with chile pequin peppers (think choulula hot sauce), and it was very good. Next came our appetizer, homemade nachos with bean and melted cheddar cheese topped with jalapenos. Pretty tasty. The cheese enchiladas suck according to my wife. The cheese inside the enchiladas was that canned nachos cheese. The red enchilada sauce also tasted canned. I got a combo plate with a chicken-stuffed chile relleno and a beef enchilada. The chill relleno was outstanding, which contained a deep fried poblano pepper covered with a white cheese and stuffed with their house shredded chicken. ALL THEIR CHICKEN IS SHREDDED WHITE MEAT. One note about their chicken tonight, it was watery and unseasoned, however, a little salt and a douse of their house salsa will fix it right up. The ground beef in the enchiladas was terrible, bland, unsalted, and not 100% beef (had bread crumb fillers). The service was slow and inattentive, as the young girls at night seem to just want to gossip at the register. Try the soapapilla, but mine was almost burnt tonight, and the honey was preapplied for me. That was fine for me, as I enjoy the honey, but my wife couldn't try one since she likes savory soapapillas dipped in salsa. So ask for your soapapillas without the honey already on it. They bring the honey container to the table anyway. They have lengua, barbacoa, and carne guisada. I will come for breakfast when everything is fresh and those giggling girls aren't there. One more thing: They have a weird payment system. Your server leaves your ticket at the register, then you pay. You don't get a detailed breakdown of your items till your transaction is complete. Loved it. I could pretty much live on their chips and queso it's so good. The two of us shared the crispy taco plate which came with beans and rice. And it was just enough. Oh the rice is just like home to me! And the beans were what they should be: tender and forkworthy. They weren't the spoonworthy soupy slop served in other places. They tacos here are great. We had one chicken and one asada beef taco. Both were excellent. The meat was flavorful and tender. The crispy taco shells were shamelessly grease-ridden. Yum. read more

This is a great inexpensive authentic Tex Mex cafe. Only open 7am- 2pm, but offer a full menu, not just breakfast. I had barbacoa. Yummy!

I don't like writing negative ratings, but when a meal falls this short, it's something that I feel I have to do to warn off others. This business came highly rated, so we stopped in. I ordered the larger burrito platter, my daughter the chicken taco platter, and my wife a bean and cheese burrito. What we got socked us. The Burrito was covered in some sort of thick, yellow goop that might have dreamed of being American cheese, but in reality was some sort of processed cheese whiz. The type you'd expect to get pumped out of a machine. While the tortilla was in fact big, 2 inches of it were empty! Yes, the 'chef' wrapped the contents in a tortilla, and did not tuck in the ends, just leaving them flapping in the breeze. Nice. What was inside seemed to be boiled shredded chicken, without any spices or any flavor. Not much else. The tortilla itself was bland and tasteless, like the beans and rice on the plate. My daughter and wife's meals were the same. Literally 'white persons "mexican" food', None of us could eat much of it, and we in fact stopped at Bucee's up the road get better food. That's right, we had better food at the local truck stop. On the way out, we saw a sign saying 'cook wanted'. It should be changed to say 'Chef desperately needed'. The food was good. No complaints about that, and the salsa was especially great. HOWEVER, the smell of poop was the first thing We noticed upon sitting down. We thought it could be a smell coming from another customer, but the stink stayed and even got worse throughout the meal. Backed up sewage system maybe? Have no character or concept on decoration, mixing Italian paints, sports bar, Mexican and more. It does need a lift up! They sell you EVERYTHING! If you ask for a glass of water, they serve it on a foam cup and charge you for that. If you order barbacoa tacos, ! You can buy five bunches of cilantro for a dollar and they charge you $1 for cilantro! Coffee was old and tasted burned. I asked her to please bring back sweet tea instead of unsweetened. She brought back more unsweetened tea. We left it alone and ordered water. The food took quite some time to get. There were maybe 3-4 families total in the restaurant. The food was overpriced for dinner. The waitress was not helpful and billed us incorrectly. We didn't even argue. I was looking for a lunch fish plate for Lenten season and decided to try the catfish plate at this local restaurant the service was fast and friendly but too fast the server brought me my plate and the presentation look good and the fries were hot and the salad was fresh but the catfish was undercooked and raw in the middle so I immediately let the server know and she offered to bring me something else but I declined and did not pay for anything. I have to tell you my 85 year old grandfather LOVES this place. Um, he doesn't love anything. He's an old Mexican man who pretty much hates everything...except Palm. The tortillas are the best you will have anywhere in the area. The boyfriend only orders the pork chop with easy over eggs - I always get the migas and the 'diabetic' tea (as the boyfriend calls it). Very good hole in the wall place (in a good way). Came here for lunch with some friends. Actually I was late and called them to tell them to just order me some tacos. They said within 2 minutes of ordering, it was there. The tacos were awesome. They make their own tortillas. Meat was just as good. The beans were actually mashed/refried which is the way I prefer them. The rice was solid. I really enjoyed the sides/salsa that came with the chips. The chips themselves were mainly fragments, but that could have been because I was late and my work buddies hosed them down. The guac that came with the chips were absolutely awesome. Service was a bit sketchy. Not bad, just very social with each other and not very attentive. It's like they had half their focus on us and the rest on their friends the entire time. It's one of my favorite restaurants in town. When we are in the mood for enchiladas we go no where else. Always order the same thing( I'm a very generic eater) which is the enchilada plate. One chicken, one beef topped with chili con carne. Double rice as I'm not a fan of beans. Always perfect. Always delicious. Salsa is spicy(I'm a wimp) but delicious. I love that they have generic child meals as my kiddos are picky and only eat chicken fingers. Price is great. Staff is always polite. Unsweet ice tea is perfect. 1st visit to this mexican food place since it was within walking distance of the hotel that I was staying at. The business is located in a small strip / retail plaza with a pawn shop and convenience store along with a laundromat in close proximity. I was not too hungry so, I played it safe and ordered a shrimp quesadilla to go. I sat and waited for my food and it took awhile so, I figured it would be fresh and tasty. When I finally got my order, I went back to the hotel and ate while watching some tube. It came with a little lettuce, sour cream and guacamole on the side along with 2 small containers of their salsa. For what I paid...almost $8, it only had about 5 small pink shrimp, the cheese tasted like Velveeta and the tortillas were small....how dissapointed I was. Final conclusion: 1. Try something different on the menu 2. Eat in rather than carry out so you can address any quality challenges. 3. My opinion is that if you can't get a quality quasadilla at a Mexican food restaurant, why even bother going back to try something else. read more
