After completing an EPIC hike earlier in the day, Friday Night Date Night called for one thing: pizza. Not fancy pizza. Not trendy pizza. Just a really good slice of pizza. Enter Palumbo's. I'd had their Grandma Pizza before and remembered it being fantastic, so I figured I'd make Palumbo's my dinner destination. Located in a shopping center with plenty of parking, it was an easy stop after a long day on the trail. The staff greeted me as soon as I walked through the door, and even a little after 5 p.m. on a Friday, the line moved quickly. I walked in fully intending to order a slice of Grandma Pizza. Then I saw the German Slice. Steak. Onions. Sauce. Bell peppers. Banana peppers. And it looked AMAZING! Plans immediately changed. One German Slice to go, please. For $4.25, a few minutes later I was trotting out the door with a warm pizza box in hand, headed for a waterside picnic at a nearby park. When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the slice. It was bigger than I remembered, which is never a bad thing when you're hungry after spending the day hiking. One bite confirmed that I'd made the right decision. The crust was thin and baked perfectly--crisp without being burnt, sturdy enough to hold all the toppings without turning into a floppy mess. The topping combination was fantastic. The steak, onions, peppers, and sauce worked together perfectly, creating something that felt like a cheesesteak and a pizza had gotten together and decided to make everyone's day better. The toppings were generous, the flavors were balanced, and every bite delivered exactly what I was hoping for after a long day outdoors. Sometimes all you need is a simple slice of pizza done really well, and Palumbo's absolutely delivered. Kudos to Palumbo's for serving quality pizza, generous portions, and keeping their prices reasonable. I'll definitely be back--and next time I may actually order that Grandma Pizza I originally came for...assuming another tempting slice doesn't distract me first! read more

Okay, so here's a review for Palumbo's Pizza, Hampton Township, Carlisle Pike. I want to start by saying the guy was clear to reiterate on my takeout order that this was Palumbo's Pizza, Hampton Township, Carlisle Pike. So get that straight. To start my review off, I'm one of those guys who can wax intellectual about a sub and a sub shop. I can wax intellectual about homemade rolls and spicy little peppers and pepperoncinis and the sort on a nice po' boy. And I gotta say it, I am a repeat spicy Italian offender of Palumbo's Pizzeria in Hampton Township. It is a place I periodically forget about. I'm not a frequent flyer, but I have flown many times. And whenever I remember Its always love at first bite for me. So I want to recap my experience a little bit here. Called the dude up. I was like, "Hey, can I order a super Italian? I would like a super Italian, please." I think because the pizzeria down street from my house in Harrisburg has a super Italian, he seemed a little flummoxed by my ordering. And I said, "Yes, a super Italian?" Then I corrected myself and I was thinking, what's it called? What's it called? Something... it's not an Italian, it's something else. It's like a spicy Italian. He said, "A spicy Italian." And I was like, "Yeah, that. I want that." And I always get spicy pepper relish and sweet peppers on it , you know, the whole deal with all the fixins and everything. The guy was super nice. He's like, "Yeah, the spicy Italian." Then he said the thing about the Hampton Township, and I swung by in 15 minutes, got my sub, and he remembered who I was when I got there. He said, "Oh yeah, so every pizza shop..." -- he corrected me on my super Italian thing -- "every pizza shop has a particular thing they call their special Italian. So it took me a second to realize what you were talking about." I loved that little banter. And I also wanted to add: the guy, for whatever reason, reminds me of one character from Cobra Kai. Like big bro energy super nice, down-to-earth, chill guy. I don't wanna name who it is, but if you know, and you go to Palumbo's and you see Cobra Kai, you'll know who I'm talking about. But needless to say, great experience. They've delivered time and time again. I am astounded every single time I have one of these things. I don't really have a crazy descriptor for the sandwich itself -- just know it's a homemade roll. It tastes fresh and light. It's sweet and spicy and juicy and creamy... all the things that you want on a nice SPICY Italian sub. So take my word for it: Palumbo's of Hampton Township .....ALL CAPS .....Carlisle Pike. My standard for good pizza is NYC - Manhattan - pizza, neopolitan. very thin crispy crust but still foldable - rich tomatoey sauce with noticeable basil and good olive oil - and of course quality mozzarella. One pizza franchise claims Brooklyn pizza is authentic NYC pizza, but it's not. Palumbo Pizza offers a lot of toppngs. but I think good neopolitan pizza, including theirs, need nothing more than a sprinkle of garlic powder and oregano, and stands alone, Palumbo's is the closest pie to real NYC in the area; their sauce is a little different, I think more tomato pastey but I can't really tell, the crust is fantastic. Every block in Manhattan has a pizzaria, and the pizzas are pretty much the same, probably because they use the same supplier. Once in Central PA I had a tiny sample ( postage stamp size) at a little stand in a crafts fair; I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Months later I went to that pizzeria and got a pie; it was delicious but missing the magic. Average pizzas can benefit from lots of stuff on top, but not this pizza. This was one of the places where my wife and I dated when we were 16. We are 52 now . Haven't been back for a long time. Don't really know why their subs are really good. The bread is good. Tied for my favorite pizza in Central PA. It's a close battle with Home Slice in my opinion. Both are New York style pizzas on the thinner side. Good flavor and good ingredients, decent crisp with only a bit of flop. The dining room is as traditional that a pizza shop can look. Very cool vibe to eat in and enjoy your pizza. I'd give this place a 7.8 on the one bite scale, and I've had my fair share of both New York and Connecticut pizzas to the point where I know what I'm talking about when it comes to pizza. read more

I am giving Palumbo 5 stars because we are in odd crazy times. I gave them 4 but changed it to 5 because honestly, they did everything right, I got my food timely, and I really liked it. I would only give the pizza a 4 star because there are some places who have shockingly great pie not far from here, but this is not any fault of PP. Its a rock solid Sicilian. The garlic wings might be what need to be discussed. I love wings & have had them enough to consider myself a "Wingie" in relation to a foodie. Palumbo's doesn't consider their wings a prime item, but I'm here to tell you they're maybe top 5 in the 717. OK so yesterday was my first time back here since the "old pre-Covid" days. I ordered a small pizza with extra cheese and a spicy Italian sub for pickup. I arrived and waited 2 minutes, and it was ready, though they warned me the pizza was REALLY hot. If you know from my previous review, I'm from LI and I know a good NY pizza when I have one. I also love a good Italian sub. I couldn't wait to get home. As before, Palumbo does NOT disappoint. The pizza was dripping with gooey cheese, foldable as ever. The sub was heavily loaded with spicy Italian goodness. Called back repeatedly. Zero effort at a solution. Called "slice". Also terrible customer service. Eventually managed to get a refund from slice. Pizza delivered at 110 minutes. Very very cold. Simply the best!! All the staff here make you feel like family as soon as you step in the door & are extremely accommodating. Their food is always perfect. We moved to the area 5 yrs ago & we had tried MANY local pizza shops in our 1st year here, but this one just can't be beat. They prove this to us time & time again! This place is absolutely terrible! To start off, i walked in at 8:30pm. They "close" at 9pm. I walked in and stood at the counter while 3 male employees stood and stared at me while staying silent. So i asked if they were closed, thinking i walked in after hours. One guy said they close in 30 mins but all the fryers are off and eveythings done for the night. All he had is a few slices of pizza. Having just done an 8 hour road trip, i bought it. BIG MISTAKE I ate about half the slice and didnt feel good. My buddy ate his and was vomitting 30 min later. I was shortly behind him. To the morons running this business, when you close at 9pm, that means you stop serving at 9pm, not that employees walk out the door at 9pm.. I wanted pizza for lunch today and there are so many places around here to try. So I drove until I saw this and saw it was rated good on yelp so I popped in. Its your typical pizza joint in a strip mall but it was eerily quiet. And (not that this really matters) I was the only female in the joint. There were like 6 tables of one man each sitting quietly. Must be where they go to have lunch alone. But there was no music, no tv, just the sound of maybe a refrigerator humming. I don't know why but that made me uneasy. I went up and ordered a slice of their "Grandma" which is their "signature" thin crust pan pizza with their "famous" marinara sauce. The words signature and famous sold me. I was told to have a seat and they'd bring it to me. So I sat in the eerily quiet restaurant and waited. I watched them walk around back there and do their daily thing. Finally my pizza came out and it was hot and fresh. It tasted okay. The crust and sauce was nothing to write home about. It had a decent italian herb flavor but the crust was a little flimsy. Almost soggy. Had to fork and knife it. They bus your tables for you so I finished up and headed out. I said thank you on the way out and they were like "yep!" lol Not overly excited to go back but I wouldn't give up on them completely. I stopped in here for a little bit of late night dinner last Friday (5/1) when I wasn't really sure what I wanted for dinner. I had originally traveled to this area to grab some 5-Guys; but after careful consideration decided that I wanted to continue my quest for Central PA's best pizza joint. So, I stopped into Palumbo's Food: Like so many times before, I ordered my classic one slice of cheese pizza. I was feeling extra brazen tonight though and noticed they offered a half-dozen order of wings. Very few places allow for a half dozen order, so I figured, 'what the hell'. First I will start with pizza. The pizza was great. The sauce and cheese combination was among the best that I had. The dough was a little dried-out and lacked the tender and chewy inside that I crave from my crust; but this could be attributed to time of night, and the fact that I ordered one slice instead of a whole pie. Despite the crust being a little dried-out, the flavor of the parts that were under the sauce and cheese were really pleasant, adding to the overall pizza flavor. As I first mentioned though, the real highlight of this pie is the sauce and cheese combination. First, the sauce tasted extremely well-balanced between acidity, natural sweetness, and robustness (seasoning). And, they actually put some damn sauce on the pizza! I like it when there is enough sauce to combine with the melted cheese in a coagulated mass of awesomeness. Next, the cheese was also perfect. Not only was its flavor profile on point, but it was cooked really nicely. The top of the cheese had little brown spots of gooey, caramelized heaven that elevated the overall flavor of the pie. Lastly, this slice of cheese pizza was huge. Onto the wings. Super disappointing as a whole; but there were some bright spots. The wings themselves are coated in some sort of a dusting (flour, or cornstarch, or other dry ingredient). I don't like wings like this. If you like wings that are dusted / breaded, these might really be your jam. For me, they are not. For me, it makes wings taste to much like the fryer because the coating retains precipitously more of the oil than the chicken meat or skin. A coating / breading also inhibits the natural crispiness of the skin from the frying process. Not all was lost though, as the Hot Buffalo sauce on the wings was excellent. It had heat, but didn't make me crap-my-brains-out later, or force me to have a glass of milk handy. Excellent Buffalo sauce! Bleu Cheese: Haha. If you have read my other reviews, you know I have a thing for bleu cheese on my wings. I also feel like wings and bleu cheese are like spaghetti and meatballs, or peanut butter and jelly -- they just go together. So when I am charged 50 cents for bleu cheese, (NOT EXTRA BLEU), it pisses me off. I could understand if I was ordering extra bleu. That stuff costs money -- I get it. But to charge me 50 cents on top of the already inflated price for your wings is b.s. 50 cents for 2 T of bleu is complete crap. If you are charging people for one bleu cheese, you need to let them know. It is sleazy business otherwise. Food: 3 / 5 (Pizza 4 / 5, Wings 2 / 5) Service: There was a sour, old, white man behind the counter who was a complete displeasure to be served by. He looked so disinterested in being there, and so miserable, that it almost made me leave. Even when I complimented him on an excellent slice of pizza, he made no comment. Not a 'thank you', a 'thanks', or even a nod indicating that he gave a crap. I am completely 'over' indifferent and otherwise rude service. Act like you want to be there, and if you don't, hide in the back of the house or find a new job because you should not be coming into contact with customers. Service: 1 / 5 Atmosphere: If it wasn't for the crap service, I would really have liked this atmosphere. It was super-clean, well-furnished, and extremely home-y feeling. It also had that feel of Tuscany / authentic Italian eatery -- despite being a pizza place. In addition to their pizza, stromboli, and other classic pizza fare, they also had veal parmesan, and other Italian specialties on the menu. Despite the crap service I received, I may consider coming back and trying their wide variety of traditional pizza fare, and maybe even some of their Italian classics. Atmosphere: 5 / 5 Price: For 2.25, I got a giant slice of quality pizza. For 50 cents for bleu plus about 6 bucks, I got crap wings that really were not all that enjoyable to eat. Like I said, if you like your wings with a coating / breading / dusting of sorts; you may seriously like these. For me, it complete ruins wings. Price: 3 / 5 (Pizza 5 / 5, Wings 3 / 5, Bleu 1 / 5) Final Thoughts: I think I may come back to Palumbo's, but probably only for the pizza. I would have really liked to have brought my wife and daughter here for one of our 'pizza nights'; but I don't really want to chance getting crap service again, and it ruining my evening. Let me first place a disclaimer on my comments. We searched on line for a pizza place that delivers. This one had decent reviews and seemed to meet our needs. We ordered a Caesar salad. That requires Romaine lettuce. Our salad was iceberg lettuce disguised as a Caesar salad. Booo! A small pizza is the way to go. It wasn't that much different than the medium. Pizzas were well made. Decent portion of ingredients and a nice thin crust dough. It was a good NY style pizza. We're visiting the area so not sure if our journeys will bring us back this way. Stopped by for something Italian before catching a movie and what an awesome find. Ridiculous menu. Everything you could want in one spot. Took me forever to decide on what to order. There is a few items on display that helped. I finally decided on the stromboli, and their special one with ham, salami and pepperoni. I got the personal size one and it was still a footlong and stuffed with meat. Well worth the price. Crust was nice and firm but not hard, and it all blended well with the sauce that came on the side. Very nice staff and a nice quiet place to eat. The restaurant is spotless. A+. We always get the plain pie, don't need anything fancy or extra. It is delicious! Very consistent. We've been here 20+ times, it is awesome! Staff is friendly. The boneless wings are so good! They are a bit on the hot side but we love them and with Bleu they're over the top good. They're menu has a good bit of variety. I've had the calamari, which is excellent. I'm a bit of a calamari snob and not many restaurants do it right. Lightly breaded, marinara, lemon, simple and delicious. They are doing everything right here. Gave 4 stars because I feel they are a little pricey. Although they are worth it. Specials would be nice, and maybe a waiter/waitress.
