It was my husbands birthday and he hates cake. Unless it is Tres Leches cake. For some reason I didn't do any research on yelp about finding an authentic Tres Leches, but I knew they made it at Porto's in Burbank. On the day of the celebration, I was supposed to wake up at the crack and head out to Burbank (20 minutes) for the cake. I woke up two hours past my scheduled time and with a 15 minute wait after you drive to Burbank. It would have taken more than an hour to get it done. Honestly, it was a BLESSING IN DISGUISE!!! If I had not been late, I would have never run across this little gem. I yelped. I called and asked if they had a cake big enough for 18-20 on hand. I was a little panicky that they wouldn't have one but they assured me they did. I gave my husband a reasonable cover up story and got out the door. I called again on the way to make sure they took credit and they do! It is in this little strip mall across from a 7/11. When I walked in the door, I was hit with the smell of fresh baked pastries of various varieties. This place immediately trumped Porto's because 1) No wait 2) I would rather go to a family run place over a chain any day. Anyway. The man behind the counter looked at me, head tilted, and said, "Tres Leches, right?" "Yes!" He asked how many people and led me over to a refrigerated case. They had more than one cake ready to go. There were two really girly decorated cakes, one with Transformers (which I was totally tempted to get), and one beautifully decorated with peaches and strawberries. That was the one for me. In a flash he put it in a box and rang me up. I couldn't believe the price for the size of the cake! $30.00 for a delicious cake for 20 people!! It really fed more than 20 people because there was a good amount left over (which I gave to the grateful staff at Lucky Strike Bowling). He then said, "Do you like pastries?" "Who doesn't?" I say. "Chocolate or Vanilla?" he asked. "Vanilla!" "Good choice." said the man and he handed me this yummy sweet bun. SO, not only did this place avert my crisis and immanent panic attack but they gave me breakfast for free!! Needless to say, I will be coming back here again. And not just for cake. read more

I've been coming to this Mexican bakery for my entire childhood and adulthood. It has the absolutely best Mexican sweet bread you can ask for and if you're a fan of sweet hot drinks I'd recommended trying their atole de elote. The best that they sell out almost every morning. My famiky and I have been coming here for over 20 years and it has never changed, their bread is always freah and delicious. Aside from just bread they also sell food, Tortas De Jamon (Mexican Sandwich With Ham), Tamales, Breakfast Burritos and an assortment of Mexican Breakfasts. They have Atole, Avena and also Licuados (Mexican Smoothies) that are to die for. The owners are great, polite, talkative and funny all in one. They take pride in their business and it is great to see that, I will continue coming here for as long as I can to enjoy the great food, sweet breads and all the other items they have for us Yelper's to gaim weight. I just stopped here on my way home from work, on graveyard shift (LADWP officer). I had never been here but the reviews made it sound so good. I'll tell you what, they were spot on!!! Found this place through Yelp. Dieters and diabetics beware!!!! Ordered a 1/4 sheet tres leches chocolate cake with banana filling as a birthday surprise for my mom. Am only rating the actual cake we ordered, but am willing to bet that everything from this place is just as mouth-watering delish and fresh as it smells as you walk through the door. The cake was super moist and just the perfect amount of sweet and chocolate. Loved that the cake was frosted with a very light whipped cream topping. The taste of the cake was out of this world, it just melted in everyones mouth!! The price was super reasonable for the quality of the cake. I haven't been here yet, but the boy got me a birthday cake from this joint and it was yummy! HUGE, too! Layers on layers and it feeds 20! And, although he wouldn't disclose the price to me, the boy says it was a decent price. From what he told me, it's Tres Leches and the thing was covered with strawberries and peaches! Yum. When I was little my parents went to a dry cleaners that used to be in a strip mall on Vanowen and Woodman. I don't think they liked taking me with them because every time we went I would stand outside the bakery next door and beg for those pretty cakes with the girls on top with the other girls on stairs around her. "Honey, those or quinceañera cake. Those of for girls that have a different heritage than you. You'll get a cake at your Bat Mitzvah." I didn't believe her answer, or maybe I just didn't want to accept it, either way, I continued to ask. Flash forward a a month ago. I met a new Yelper, Oscar A. at the Swinghouse Elite event. We started talking and I mentioned I lived in Van Nuys. He mentioned that he had a bakery in Van Nuys. When he told me it was on the corner of Vanowen and Woodman I nearly passed out. I told her about my pining for one of his cakes and he told me I should come in some time for a cake. Flash forward to last weekend. Shauna D. through me a wonderful surprise party. After I gave my hugs and shook off a little the shock, Oscar presented me with the amazing cake (picture in the business photos). Joaquin (the man in the Speedos adorning the top of the cake) and I are now very happy. The cake itself was worth the seventeen year wait. Moist and delicious, this place is far and away better than any other bakery I think I've ever been to. The strawberries in the middle were so fresh and even though they were sitting in (delicious) frosting, they still had a snap to them. I usually take cakes home so my mom can have some. I love that you are able to self serve your champurrado, they also have atoles and avena (oatmeal) mmmmm!! Mainly their tamales for Christmas, but in the last couple of years, I've been disappointed with how little meat there is to how much masa there is! The taste of the meat is good and still my favorite, but I have been looking for a better tamale place that will actually put some meat in their tamales. This is my new favorite place! I found it on Google, and read the reviews here on Yelp, so I decided to go over and check it out. I love the tamales, they are good size, great quality and authentic! I also adore the pupusas (Salvadoran stuffed masa flatbread). I also ordered my birthday cake the other day for my upcoming party. Juan, the owner was so friendly and helpful. I don't eat sweets, but the baked goods all look amazing. The only thing missing are little tables to eat there. I have been going three days in a row already to get tamales to take home. read more

Sorry to say, that on my visit on September 2, 2016, I was told that they no longer sell cake there. I had loved their white cake with a white buttercream frosting. The cake I ordered was half vanilla bread and half chocolate. The cake was alright. I had better. They told me my cake would be ready by 5 pm and I had to wait until 6:30. Ever since I moved to the Valley, I have been on the search for the best pan dulce in town. While the pan dulce here is above average, it was definitely not what I was expecting considering the very good reviews. The service was great and the ladies there were very nice. this place has been here longer than I have lived in this neighborhood ( 19 years) which is saying a lot, because most of the independently owned shops and cafes etc have a high turnover rate. The tres leches cake is their speciality and yes they do it right ..Also they have AWESOME bachelorette cakes..they used to have bachelor cakes ala 1973 complete with a little doll in an actual nylon negligee and fake beer cans, but I think they are special request. The pandulce rocks and they are probably the only panaderia who carries pan del muerto and the tres reyes cake not made in a factory. And its owned by a super nice family too read more

I've been going to this place since I was a little girl. It's been at the same location for ages. They've got the best mexican sweet bread I've ever had, and I've been to several locations in the valley. The cakes are also the best. I don't live near the area anymore, but I always make a drive out to get my sweet bread fix from here. Only minor problem is the parking, but other then that, the bread is amazing. read more
