Stopped in at Panera for a quick lunch and tried the Chicken Roma Asiago Stack -- I was genuinely impressed. It might be my favorite sandwich they've had since the turkey artichoke (and that's saying a lot after more than a decade). It was flavorful without being too heavy. I paired it with a cup of French onion soup, which was also delicious. The downside was the service. It felt almost non-existent. We ended up ordering at the kiosk because no one was at the register. Seating was what you'd expect from a typical Panera, and parking was easy. I do on occasion order a sandwich from Panera Bread online. I like to try new things, but I have settled on a favorite that is customized to my satisfaction. So, I ordered it, added a cookie, and went to pick it up where it was waiting for me. The only problem I have is that they ask me what time I plan to pick something up before I can order it. Have to repeat everything three times, then wait while the dumas repeats everything back two times, and still end up with missing stuff in the bag. It doesn't matter which Panera Bread we go to, the orders include almost the same thing every time. A strawberry smoothie. My youngest loves the strawberry smoothie from Panera Bread. I really like using the kiosks inside for when I order because it remembers my favorites list. Every Panera looks similar, not a ton of frills. The drink stations are nice because you can refill your drink before leaving. The open kitchen is nice because you can talk to a person in the event you have a question or issue. We stopped for lunch earlier today (and I think have a few times while on this route to DC or back) and had some delicious, fresh salads. Panera Bread has great food choices and the cutest booths to eat in. I gave this location 2 stars because the staff was not really into their jobs. No smiles for any customers, constant griping about their work hours, their boss, boring routine, they were bothered by my questions about the Take 2 menu, basically they did not want to be there and they let us know. The tables and floors were not clean. We wiped down the booth we wanted and brushed the crumbs from the seats onto a few napkins. The trash area was full of dishes that needed to be taken to the back and washed. Our food was served to us as haphazardly as they could get away with and still call it soup and a 1/2 sandwich. The ingredients were slapped up on the bread without a plan or care. I realigned it so I could get an even bite. The soup was good. But don't be surprised to arrive at 8:59pm and find the door firmly locked. - Watch when ordering the clam chowder. On two occasions, I was served baked potato soup instead. It is similar in appearance, but costs less. - If you arrive late in the evening, the ciabatta bread usually runs out. Many of the substitutes don't work well either. Very sad to see that Panera is serving kale that is turning bad. I got the modern Greek with quinoa and it just a pet peeve of mine to not serve greens that are turning bad.
