We've invested heavily in our kitchen over the years and cook most of our own meals. Panera Bread company has inspired us to explore new approaches to our food creations. Recently, we noticed that Panera has stepped up their game even more than before. The food is always light but hearty, striking the right balance in creativity and fulfillment. The staff are always helpful if engaged for their input, mostly college age, and interesting people when you take the time to notice. I think the chink in Panera's model is the absence of personal involvement once you've reached the seating area. In some ways it's like seating in a nicer cafeteria, which is okay by us because we tend toward introversion while eating. Some might see that as a lack of attention, but it's really some private space in a fast serving operation. Overall, Panera gets most of what we consider right in a place to eat. We rarely go to any other chain or fast food place. This was the only soup/sandwich/bakery shop we took our entire extended family to during a family reunion, no complaints, and everyone had lots to engage each other about over the wonderful food they had ordered. read more

Consistently good. I love it here during off hours when it's not packed, you can enjoy unrushed coffee shop ambiance, good food, and fast wifi. Some things here are always great, I can enthusiastically recommend the following: 1) Cinnamon Crunch Bagel with Hazelnut Cream Cheese. Pick up a dozen before work and make a bunch of friends...these are sugary perfection. 2) Hazelnut Coffee. It's cute that they put the brewed time up on each refill pot and just about any kind of coffee accoutrements you desire including nutmeg. If you haven't had nutmeg in your hazelnut coffee, its' the best thing you can add besides whiskey which, sadly, isn't an option at Panera but it's about the only thing that isn't. 3) Everything Bagel with Veggie Cream Cheese. In the mood for savory goodness instead of sweetness, try this pair and don't be afraid to slather on that onion-y good cream cheese. 4) The Chicken Cobb with Avacado...almost the perfect salad. I say almost because they could really add a little more dressing most of the time, but it's hard to complain about this bowlful of yummy low-carb sustenance. I mean, come on! 5) Baguettes. Just good traditional slightly crusty bread. Put some butter out to soften at home, pick up a baguette on your trip to Panera, and enjoy them together when you get back. That's the list of recommendations, but there are a few other things you might need to know. If it's during a rush, you won't find a booth and it can get pretty loud. It's always very clean and a good spot to take a book or a laptop and chill. Unless a pack of unruly kids (or even 1 or 2 especially loud little buggers) or a gaggle of identically t-shirted family reunioners shows up you should enjoy a nice visit. They also usually have some good cookies, muffins, etc. All of the soups are full of carbs so if you're off the carbs stick to salads and coffee. I mean you're just going to have to show up and figure the rest out for yourself. Parking at the Johnson City Panera is pretty tight. The Kingsport store has better parking. They have a little rewards program, my wife and I share an account and occasionally get a free coffee. read more

Love Panera. I live in Louisiana and am from Pennsylvania so as I was traveling through Tennessee I knew I would get a healthy meal and it would be what I expected. We came after the dinner rush and the tables were all very dirty. I ordered the barbecue chopped chicken salad which is normally a favorite of mine, however, it was skimping on the dressing and all the other ingredients, so it was mostly just salad. This experience could have been much better. And it was my boyfriends first time At a panera. I had really talked them Up so I think he was a little disappointed. -Horrible experience with Togo and delivery separate occasions. Soup had chunks of plastic. Emailed them they agreed, yes from where they cut the bag and pour it in the heating pot. That's all they responded. Gag really -We tried tried the delivery option to our workplace, they are out of bread??? So they sent chips. Didn't ask us what we wanted instead of notified us upon delivery. -attempted Togo soup and sandwich. I ordered a panini which is still on the menu board. Got home it was a baked sandwich that looked uncooked. It was nasty. My bagel had been thrown in a bag on top of a chocolate brownie so it ruined both. I got my husband mac and cheese almost $7 and it was half empty when we got home. I sent another email. They respond with yeah we have a new oven. Nothing as to hey sorry for your experience nothing. This place is over rated and over priced and does not care about customer service. I went down the street to McCallisters got same thing and it was better and cheaper. My son and I went due to the hype. He had the Cuban and I had ham. I only took one bite, that's all my jaw could take trying to bite through the bread. I don't get why anybody would pay that much for a tiny bun-like bread that's hard as a rock. Haven't been back. read more

I have never given a review on yelp but after my last visit to Panera bread I must. I ordered the you pick two. I ordered the Fuji apple chicken salad and the turkey cranberry flatbread sandwich. I was very disappointed. The sandwich had maybe four cranberries and that is stretching the imagination. But worse than that, the two pieces of turkey were covered in grease. They were so greasy that when I bit into the sandwich it squirted out and ran down my arm. The fat from the turkey solidified on my plate. I could not eat anymore of it after tasting all that fat. One does not expect fat to squirt out of a turkey sandwich.The Fuji apple chicken salad filled not even one fourth of the bowl. It was not near the serving that I had received in the past. I went to lunch today with my mother because we like their turkey/avocado sandwich. We both got half a sandwich and I got a bowl of soup. The food is good. A little pricey, but I knew that going in. I understand with COVID they are preparing all their food to go, even if you are choosing to eat in. The problem is that since they aren't serving anything, NO ONE attends to the dining room. Both times lately I have been, we have had to clean our own table even though it was not that busy and there were plenty to choose from. All of them were dirty. The floors are filthy with food and trash everywhere. No napkins in the dispensers and the drink station was messy. I understand you want to protect your employees from exposure to customers, but what about our exposure to others. A little wiping and disinfecting of tables between uses would be appreciated. Even though I love the food and staff, I'm not sure I can take the condition of the dining room and stations anymore. read more

This restaurant's food is consistent; however, the overall look and cleanliness of the place is atrocious. The bathroom was nasty and smelled like urine. The tables and counters had not been wiped down. The carpet had not been vacuumed, and there was trash laying around on the tables and floor. They were not short staffed, and the place was not that busy. It's called: Open your eyes people. If you see trash, pick it up. If you see a table that needs to be cleaned and wiped, do it! Male employees, if the bathroom stinks when you walk in, take steps to clean it up. This is a popular restaurant that was completely renovated a few years back. Now it looks worn out and dirty. This cafe is my favorite place to go to on my days off. I love to order a chai tea latte (theirs are absolutely delicious) with a book and read for as long as I wish. The ambience is wonderful and so is the staff. I swear, they literally perfect a chai tea latte. You can taste the cinnamon and spices, but it's not over-powering at all. I've been to Panera Bread four times in the last two weeks. It was convenient because my mother just moved to a nearby assisted living facility. Each time the place was incredibly filthy! I returned only because I knew that it used to be clean and I hoped there was just a fluke or shortage of staff. I ate there again today simply because my companion wanted to go. It was filthier than ever. Each time I went it was late afternoon and it was not crowded. Yet EVERY table had food and debris on it. Smeared food. Dirty seats. The floor, every time, looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in days.  If the front of the house is this filthy, what does the back look like? Is my food being prepared in filthy conditions? I really love Panera Bread food. But the experience is no longer pleasant. read more

Wow! On a long drive and spent the night in Johnson City, TN. Stopped in this Panera for breakfast and met the nicest people! The place was very clean and organized! Tried the chicken tortellini alfredo, which is easily the most disgusting meal I've ever received out anywhere. Undercooked, pink chicken picked off the bone and piled on top of overcooked pasta with mediocre alfredo sauce. Also way overpriced to have to go home and eat something else because the serving size was so small (not to mention had to leave the nasty chicken on the plate). Before settling on this dish every other item I asked about was either no longer available, they were out, or would be an additional charge. Do not go after 3 o'clock!!! I eat here every day and breakfast and lunch time is always excellent. But night time is a disaster. After my fourth horrible experience I cannot hold back writing a crappy yelp review. They never have any product and the service is crap. They need a new night manager big time! This is possibly the worst Panera in the United States. It's so disappointing because I love Panera. Every time I order rapid pickup it's 10 to 20 mins later then the expected ready time. The order is rarely where it's supposed to be, and is made wrong literally every time. I ordered an Asiago bagel egg and cheese and they gave me a whole grain bagel. I don't see how that's a mistake when the name of the bagel I want is quite literally in the title. When I order coffee it never comes with the whip cream and drizzle that's suppose to be standard on iced and frozen drinks. You literally have to customize it if you don't want it. All my salads and sandwiches never have the appropriate ingredients. The big thing too, is my family doesn't customize that often. But even the standard recipes are rarely met. Let alone when we do customize something. I keep trying over and over to give this place a chance because I truly love Panera. But it's clear the employees don't care or don't know what's standard. Pretty disappointed with lunch today. Elected to do a pick two with a steak and cheddar panini. Granted it's been a while since I've had lunch here, but the sandwich was about half the size as I had in the past. Definitely not a $6.25 sandwich. They also burned it. Not impressed. My wife had a bacon turkey bravo which has always been a good choice. The turkey looked like they went to Sam's Club and picked up cheap deli lunch meat. I ordered my food and found a seat. Took a a phone call and talked for 23 minutes. My light up thing for food ready never went off. I finally went up to the counter to find out why in Gods name is this taking so long. My order wasnt in the computer system and nobody knew what to do worrying about the computer. I had to bring my receipt up to show them my order so they could make it. At the very least I should have gotten the order comped out, instead I got excuses and the run around. I always loved Panera in Asheville, but this store just plain sucks. read more

I haven't been to Panera in a few years. Last night we decided to go and get some bagels. It was after 8pm so the place was not very busy. So I mistakenly thought we would be in and out. Not the case. There were 2 people in line ahead of us. The 2 girls that were ordering when we came in ordered 2 hot coffee drinks, the guy that took the order then went to make the drinks, while 5 other employees were "hanging out" behind the counter. It took him almost 15 minutes to make the drinks, mean while now there is another customer waiting behind us. After he finally got their drinks made another employee comes to help take orders. We ordered a 6 back of bagels and 2 tubs of cream cheese. As we were finally walking out, I checked the bag only to find only 1 cream cheese tub. The girl did give it to us without charging us. But it was not worth the time wasted and frustration. I will not be back. Also, there were piled up dishes on tables and return bens. With all the employees standing around, there should have been a spotless restaurant and no wait to order. read more

Is it a requirement to work at this Panera that you never smile? The staff always looks miserable and act like they are doing you a favor by waiting on you. Food is never consistent. Sometimes salads are swimming in dressing, other times you have to walk to the counter to ask for more, and "bother" the employees. Service and food need help. read more

Food appears to going in the correct direction without additives & dyes. However previous six visit show cleanliness is not there strong point. Multiple tables remain uncleaned, crumbs under six to seven tables, the station where you return your plates is disgustingly filthy! Female manger did nothing about reported condition! My order was incorrect. A simple cheddar or American cheese, lettuce and tomato sandwich was rung up by Hollie the cashier as a turkey Havrati cheese sandwich. Luckily, I saw it on the receipt and questioned it. The Hollie said the turkey would be removed and so would the Havrati. By the time she spoke with the sandwich maker, the cheese was in there ... had no idea about the turkey because it was wrapped up. Trying to be nice, I said I would just take the Havrati cheese off when I got home. Sure enough ... got home, went to remove the Havrati cheese and there was turkey!!! Called immediately and spoke with Cassie, who I was told was a manager, and asked for a refund as a could not eat the sandwich as I do not eat meat. First of all she never apologized for any of it and told me that I would have to return to the store with my credit card to receive a refund. I explained I lived 15 minutes away and asked to speak with THE manager. She said his name was Bob and he would call me first thing in the morning. Three days later nothing!! Rapid Pick-up at this location was questionable today. As most people in the Johnson City area know, this Panera is absolutely PACKED around lunch time. It's difficult to even park. All this being said, the concept of rapid pick-up is awesome. But, today, for example, my large green tea was not waiting on the shelf. So, I had to wait in line for several minutes (packed) to get an employee to get it for me.The manager was right next to me talking to family members, out in the waiting/line area. After getting into my car, I realize that the pastry isn't in the bag with my lunch. (You know, the one they offer you for $1 when you order a meal).. so.. back inside to wait in line, again. The same lady that got me my green tea looked through my bag before she retrieved the pastry. And she had this bewildered look on her face like, "why is this chick back in here?" The manager was standing directly next to her and said nothing. Not even an "I'm sorry" from the employee or manager. I know what good customer service is, and theirs was a zero-star rating today. Stopped at Panera today for lunch. Very disappointed with the food. The hoagie was about the size of a hotdog roll, the 1/2 sandwiches were really tiny and the chicken caeser salad had very little chicken and just bread pieces for the croutons.
