I recently went to Koma with a friend and had a lovely Sunday brunch. Koma is in a small strip of…read morestores adjacent to Washington Adventist University. When we arrived, there were a few spaces available in their small parking lot, so we had no trouble parking. The shop is charming. They sell a few select beers and wines so it was fun to peruse them as we waited on line to order. Their menu is on boards behind the counter and they also have paper menus, which is helpful to those of us who need glasses! The staff was super friendly and helpful since I hadn't been there before. A+ to them for offering their coffee/espresso drinks in decaf! I had a vanilla latte and it had a deep, rich flavor. One of the best I've had in the area. For food, my friend had the bagel and lox and it was huge! She had to take half home. I had the garlic Boursin eggs. It was a nice pile of delicately cooked eggs, but I wished there was more garlic Boursin flavor. Still really good. It came with salad greens in a light vinaigrette, sauteed mushrooms, and avocado. Very nice dish. They have a serve-yourself water station and, though they bring out your order to your table, you must go get your cutlery and napkins. They have a nice number of tables for a small place and we were lucky to snag one. Overall, a really nice experience and I plan to go back with my husband next time.

I also had the Green Machine smoothie, which surprised me with little bits of crystallized ginger, each one delivering a lovely pop of flavor. We sat outside at the picnic tables on a beautiful spring morning, and even though I rarely emerge for breakfast, I can't deny that it was worth the early excursion.

This past Saturday the shop was buzzing as it tends to be, filled with students back on campus. The parking lot was a bit chaotic, but I got lucky with scoring a spot. I ordered a honey cinnamon iced latte and although I was dreading a long wait (the place was packed) I was able to be in and out within about 10 mins. The latte hit and I was able to return to the beltway hustle with a little peace and caffeine. Thank you, Vigilante for always getting it right!

The skateboardy vibes definitely reminded me of some of our more eclectic coffee shops up here in the PNW, and I fit right in with the crowd of remote workers and Macbookers. The coffee itself (I had an oat milk vanilla latte) was tasty and hot, and I always appreciate some nice #latteart to start my day. I did order their GOAT Toast on sourdough, and wasn't the biggest fan but it was ok. Sadly, I had to order it twice as my first order was "borrowed" by (apparently) another customer and I hadn't hear the food beeper go off. They were very gracious about making me another, though! Parking here was challenging - I had to park up the street, a couple of blocks away. Not a big deal, but worth noting.

Everyone raved about the cake -- the icing was not overly sweet, the sponge was baked well and the strawberry filling in the middle was amazing. After giving up the morning of his birthday, I called Flowers to get their strawberry shortcake, which is very similar to the cake I make. I was able to pick it up at the Hyattsville location after calling several times. The issue was, this is a whipped cream cake, but apparently they too were short on whipping cream because the icing was BUTTERCREAM, which defeated the purpose of calling the bakery. I could have done buttercream at home!!! Also, the workers did not spell his name (Michael- a regular DEGULAR name with normal Western spelling) correctly. I spelled it for her three times in English AND Spanish, and she STILL wrote it Michel. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. She "fixed" it but left the cake smudged. I am madder about the buttercream than the name though because they didn't sweeten it, so it tasted like cold hard butter instead of buttercream lol. You can't make a lightly sweetened whipped cream frosting with butter. You just can't. They don't do the same things. Flowers is a great bakery for a lot of things but they need to make better decisions in their cake baking and their staff definitely needs to take some basic spelling tests because that was awful.
