ABSTRACT: What follows is a purely scientific (ok, maybe not), peer-reviewed (actually true) analysis of the two best cinnamon rolls on Maui. ;-). Both options were consumed at peak freshness. Inter-rater reliability was high. Results indicated a clear preference, but recognition that intra-familial results would likely vary. Definitely our favorite research project on the island. BACKGROUND: Papi's lays claim to the best cinnamon rolls, and one of the longest wait times on the island for anything not run by an airline. Zero point three miles north lies an oft-mentioned "also-good" that some even say is "just-as-good." METHOD: Tried both. Three days apart. Both warm out of the oven max fresh. North option was a 3-min wait, Papi's was a 45-min wait and barely got 2 of the last 4 available for the day. RESULTS: Both places executed their approach to absolute perfection. Very clear differences between the two mean that there can be no objective winner. It's down to personal (or in our case, family) preference. Papi's PROs Buttery and super sweet (more American style?) Maybe a slight edge on frosting. Amazing textures, from the soft roll up to just the right amount of hard caramelized crunchy bits. Papi's CONS The wait (duh) Couldn't get enough to test longevity The potential for social aggression should you be one of the last chosen few or one of the first castaways (we sent our New Yorker, so we were fine.) Northern PROs (our favorite) Soft and doughy More yeasty than crunchy Less crazy sweet (more Asian style?) Good for days (so round up!) Other stuff was also available and good Northern CONs No social superiority for scoring some If you only try this one, you'll never know DISCUSSION Don't believe anyone who tells you definitively that one is objectively better than the other. We would choose our favorite even if both were sitting in front of us with no wait. But we can't recommend enough that you "do your own research." :) CONCLUSION Can't go wrong, brah! read more

This is the best cinnamon roll I've ever had in my entire life. We got into Kaanapali on Wednesday night and unfortunately had only one day of Papi's ohana! Had it been up to us, we would have gone there for breakfast every day. Because they are the best, gear up and expect a long line. You're going to wait either way, whether you get there before they open, or come after. We arrived at 7:45 and probably walked out with our goods at 9:15. It was WORTH THE WAIT. But do come early as sometimes they sell out. We walked away with two cinnamon rolls, a ham and cheese, and a sausage croissant. All very very good. We anticipated to save the second cinnamon roll for breakfast the next day, but it didn't make it through the first day before we were drooling over it and heated it up for dessert the same night. The lady working the register was SO nice and treated us like we were the only customers in her world. You will have to wait a while in line if you plan on getting a cinnamon roll in the morning. Once you are at the counter, you will be greeted with aloha and the opportunity to purchase perhaps the best cinnamon roll I've ever had. At night, they also serve pizza which is very good in its own right. Lastly, if they still have any of the breakfast croissants, when you get to the front of the line, I would highly recommend buying one or two. read more

I had an amazing experience today that truly lives up to its glowing reputation. Linda and her husband David, who wake up together before dawn to mix their secret-recipe dough, along with their wonderful staff, bring such authentic warmth and joy to the Lahaina community. Their dedication is extraordinary. Linda is up at 2 a.m. to begin the baking, and David is right there with her, hand-making everything with a focus you can taste. When I asked why they don't use machines, the answer was heartfelt: "It just wouldn't taste the same." And you truly can taste the difference--the "uniqueness"--in every bite of their sweet, tender rolls with the perfect amount of frosting. But it's more than incredible food. It's the whole experience--the people, the atmosphere, the care. I'm usually not one to wait in long lines, but I'd gladly wait for one of their cinnamon rolls, and to spend another moment in that uplifting energy. I consider myself a cinnamon roll connoisseur and I was completely blown away by how different and amazing this was. I would advise that the cinnamon roll should be split as it was a lot but man this was incredible. My sister ordered the blueberry scone and that was amazing as well. WORTH THE HYPE!! Best cinnamon roll I have EVER had. It was just absolutely perfect and this is a must try on Maui. The line was a little long but trust me it's worth the wait. We might just have to come back tomorrow! We also got the chocolate croissant and it was amazing. Everything is freshly made and out of this world. It certainly pays dividends to be in multiple Facebook groups about Maui. This is how I heard about Papi's Ohana. I'm in about 3 or 4 groups and Papi's Ohana was recommended several times. We went to Maui in April and Papi's was on the list of "must do's'. We heard about the long lines and suggestions to get there early because they can easily run out of their famous cinnamon buns. Well, the first day we got there at 4:30 in the afternoon and walked right up to the counter and bought 4. No problem. They were fresh and warm with plenty of icing oozing down the sides. Each cinnamon bun comes in their own box and they are HUGE. I opted for extra icing at .75 cents each. (Worth every penny!) I kid you not, these cinnamon buns were one of the highlights of our trip in terms of food. They were so good! I have a bit of a sweet tooth and that's why we ordered a couple extra. Papi's Ohana is not open every day, so be sure to check their website so you don't miss out. I made sure to plan a second trip so I could take some home. The day before we left, I Ubered from Westin Kaanapali. Again, I walked right up to the counter but the cinnamon buns had another 8 minutes left in the oven. My Uber driver was uber cool and had no problem waiting for me. I mentioned this to the owner of Papi's and they gave my driver a free cinnamon bun! They were incredibly generous and so incredibly kind. I brought them back home and had something to look forward to after a long flight back! Don't miss out on this wonderful family owned business. Come on! Truly the best cinnamon rolls we have had here. Now, to be fair, we haven't tried others. There's not a lot of bakeries that I'm aware of in Ka'anapali so it is refreshing to find Papi's. A shout out to the Yelpers. Next time we will try the pizza and cookies because they sure look good too. The cinnamon roll is very tender and flakey, almost croissant like layers of buttery goodness. The real cream cheese topping is evenly spread and not too sweet. I also tried the Blueberry Scone with lemon glaze, the Tropical Scone with Coconut Glaze and the Da Local Kine: Spam, Swiss Cheese & Jalapeño Croissant. The Scones were flavorful. This pizza was so good. Ordered the Westside Chicken pizza and it was ridiculously delicious. My critiques and the reason I can't give 5 stars have to do with the service and ambiance of the restaurant itself. The pizza was not ready at its promised time and I had to wait about 15 extra minutes for it to be ready. Also there was a pop up religious sermon happening right in front of the restaurant that was very loud and obnoxious while I was waiting. I was also asked to join multiple times which I felt was invasive, especially if I was not practicing their religion they were. I think these cinnamon rolls have about a 10-12 inch diameter lol it's so big. I'm not sure what these use for their dough but it's flaky goodness. It was noon on a Thursday in the fall and I had no issues with a line or anything ... after reading the reviews I did call before going to make sure there were rolls left. It's a small shop with really nice people. Everything listed on the breakfast board had a sold out sign beside it so I only tried the cinnamon rolls which did not disappoint. First we ate here for pizza, then the next morning we showed up for cinnamon rolls. Both are amazing! That many five star reviews can't be wrong! There are two small tables inside and three outside. This pizza is made to order. We didn't know we should have called ahead (orders start being taken at 2:00). The rolls were good but not worth the wait. You can taste the sugar grains in the frosting and the dough is flaky like a croissant. I'll give the food a 4 star and the process of waiting 1 stars. They only have 1 person working the register inside and 1 taking Coffee and drink orders walking the long lines. You're paying for the nostalgia and they add to it by letting the line wrap around the business down the street when they could easily make the process quicker by having more people work the register.
