Literally the best breakfast place in LA! All their food is organic from local farms and the dishes are way more than just standard breakfast food. I loved their buckwheat waffle and the fact that they serve duck and turkey eggs is incredible. The staff is super nice and helpful which made the whole experience just beyond amazing. Oh and I have to mention their delicious artisan coffee! You have to try their lavender latte! The service is quite fast which is extra remarkable for a new place like that. So I rarely write reviews and honestly don't think I've ever written a negative review but the circumstances I encountered on two occasions at Papille Gustative, unfortunately, inspired this review. I'm an LA native and local who just moved their permanent home into the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica. I had walked past this restaurant a couple of times and was very excited to try it as it looked really good, was only four blocks from my new place and I always love having a go-to local spot. The first time I went was on a Saturday night in late May. I made a reservation for 7:45 though when I arrived I was surprised to see that there were plenty of open tables even though it was a nice evening. We were promptly seated by a friendly host and then sat for literally 20 minutes (again, maybe 3 of the six or eight outdoor tables were occupied) before I flagged down a waiter who came over and simply said, "Yes?" I asked him if we could get water and order since we had been sitting quite some time. He actually just walked away without saying anything. My guest and I looked at each other perplexed. The waiter returned in a couple of minutes, poured us water and said curtly, "Are you ready?" We ordered and that was the last we saw of him (another server who was warm and friendly brought the food). We had to flag the waiter down again after we were done to request a dessert menu and then again for the check. Each time he arrived, he was rude and acted like we were inconveniencing him. It was seriously the worst service I'd ever received at what seemed to be a decent restaurant. I personally despise entitled people and so am myself hesitant to ever complain but I did tell the host and another member of the wait-staff on our way out that our waiter was appalling. They apologized profusely and assured me if I came back it would be much better. Fortunately, the food was very good and I know every place has an off night so, in spite of terrible service, I was willing to try again. Two weeks later I made another Saturday night reservation for 7:00 (which again, turned out to be unnecessary). We were promptly seated in the same waiter's section as my previous visit. This time, we ordered within 5 minutes, our salad arrived shortly thereafter (which was delicious) and then.....nothing; no food, no water refill, nothing. At 8:10, we got up and walked out. What a joke! I honestly don't know how they stay in business and understand why on Main St. on a Saturday night, the place isn't that busy. Such a shame. I really wanted to love (or even just like) this place. I had told my foodie friend about my first experience there but still encouraged him to go for the fettucine and scallops. After my second experience, I told him not to bother. When I walk by this place in the future and see it shuttered, I will sadly shake my head with understanding. read more

What an awesome spot. I tried it for the first time today by getting some the brunch plate and banana bread to go. Both were delicious. The brunch plate was healthy, fresh, and filling. It had a nice assortment of items and was actually a bit larger than I was expecting, which was a nice surprise. I had no issues with service and my order was ready when I arrived. I'd also like to call attention to the to go containers, which are vastly better than typical ones. I won't try to describe them in here but they seal and, more impressively re-seal, really well. As a French native I really wanted to like Papille Gustative especially because upon checking their menu online I saw that for once a restaurant in Santa Monica offered a glass of Bordeaux wine (where I'm from) and that French charcuterie platter seemed so promising. We were appalled when we went there for our Sunday's lunch and realized that basically this place runs on no service. There's hostesses to greet you but that's it. No service. You have to place your order by yourself on an app. Pardon ? Sacrilège! That's very much not French. I was super disappointed. Hospitality and conviviality are a paramount part of the French dining experience. Even setting aside the whole French thing; why would I spend over $100 for 2 people with no service anywhere ? For a no service place I would rather go to a place like Tocaya and certainly not for a Sunday lunch. Hopefully they'll fix that issue and we would be delighted to come back. read more

We went specifically to hear Natalie Jacobs and her jazz instrumentalists and were thrilled by their talent. If you're looking for an intimate setting to hear easy jazz, this is the place. But check the schedule because they aren't there every night. Our server, the hostess and manager made the evening relaxing & enjoyable without rushing us through our meal. It's expensive (not $$; more like $$$) but the food is fresh (although a bit bland) and the menu is very creative. Also a good place for the those who are still Covid careful. read more

Even after leaving them multiple messages and posting these reviews we never heard back from this restaurant about refunding us for the relatively expensive bottle of wine they charged us for but never brought us. We had to go to our bank to stop the payment. What a waste of time and effort -- all to not eat or drink anything because of this restaurant's spectacular and borderline malevolent incompetence. I'm a long time Santa Monica resident who strongly believes in supporting local shops, but it's a two way street. Walked past this restaurant and was intrigued by their menu...everything sounded amazing! They also had a nice seating area outside. The server promptly seated me and my friend and we ordered off the QR code on the placard on the table. I was a little surprised she didn't hand us menus when she seated us, but didn't mind it too much with it still being Covid times. So we ordered off my phone and waited patiently. The table next to us seemed to have been sitting for a while before their food got brought out, so I was expecting a longer wait time. 10 minutes passed and we were brought some water. 15 minutes later, the server outside asked if we had ordered yet, and I told her yes. I waited a little more before flagging down another server to ask him to check up on my order. He came back later to tell me they were busy with take-out orders (despite the fact that another table seated later than us had their food served first).... I waited another 5-10 minutes after that and walked inside the restaurant to check with the server at the cashier. It was beyond ridiculous that the servers walking in and out barely bothered to check in with our table. I told her I wanted my order canceled while she was checking and apologizing about how the ticket never printed or wasn't received. During the end of all that, my friend said the food got brought out. But by that point I was way too fed up to even want to eat their food and left. Shame, but never again. read more

Papille Gustative (I had to look it up a French dictionary) opened a few months ago. It has become the new temple of hyper-farm-to-table cooking in Santa Monica: super fresh local ingredients and a chef that knows what we will love from those ingredients. The gazpacho has all the traditional favours with an intensity you don't see in Los Angeles (probably the fresh ingredients). All the toasts come on a thick Danish Rye bread that allows the flavors of the toppings to indulge you. I am currently ordering take out once a week and it has become a moment of indulgence in these Covid times. read more

The place is lacking identity, advertising as "LA farm to table" but then showing Eastern European influence and using many cheap Trader Joe steals such as the Hungarian cider at $9 per glass, charcuterie boards that were missing the advertised bread and looked to have Trader Joe's origin and TJ cheeses and meat ingredients as well. Pasta with scallops had caviar on top which is not California farm to table style. The place needs to find and advertise their uniqueness because right now it comes across as a hodgepodge. read more

Oh, and don't ask for butter or jam with your croissants, because you won't get them without an UP CHARGE. One more thing...there UNISEX RESTROOM has a urinal, which is loaded with rocks....instead of a clean white sanitary place to relieve your self...you get rocks which cannot be scrubbed or cleaned. No wonder they have HEAVY SCENTED CANDLES in that room! Because obviously they're not clean! If I could subtract stars and give this vile pool of bad service I would give it a minus 10 STARS! I ordered the Farmers Charcuterie Board. The only 'charcuterie' on the Board (which was initially forgotten) was the Duck Prosciutto. Maybe, they don't know that "Charcuterie" includes some meats like salami, paté. The cheeses were more than just average - not very tasty. Very disappointing. But the bread was delicious. I ordered a glass of wine that had barely any wine in it. After pointing this out to the waiter, he immediately filled it up a little more. And the prices are far from mediocre.
