I have one main truth - regardless of whether I've already had dinner, if slices of pizzas available nearby, my pizza stomach will accommodate them. And this is how it was one night after eating dinner at another restaurant nearby...the enticing-looking slices at Gjelina Take Away beckoned, and I answered the call. Considering Gjelina proper is one of the more difficult restaurants to get into if you don't plan in advance, being able to get a taste of their deliciousness at the adjacent take-away version is a gift to us all. Their Pomodoro pie (think perfectly thin and crispy crust, generous size, and tomatoes galore on top) looked out of control, so we got a slice. Add burrata cheese? Oh, yes, please do that. And they did, and we ended up with this glorious Naples / NYC slice fusion that delighted my post-dinner pizza joie de vivre. Nothing infuriates me more than when I order a sandwich and it immediately falls apart because the bread is too thin or the liquids inside are too wet. I ordered the turkey sandwich and within 3 minutes of receiving it, the bread got soggy from the inside and half the ingredients spilled out, making a sloppy mess on my plate. It basically became a turkey salad with soggy bread mixed in. The quality was good and fresh, but I will not tolerate poor sandwich bread integrity, especially when it's $18. The more expensive the sandwich, the more irritated I get when it instantly turns into soup upon holding it for a bite. I like Gjelina for other items on the menu. Service is good. Location is nice for Venice. But I'll never order a sandwich here again until they toast the bread or use thicker slices to maintain sandwich firmness. read more

Gjelina and me go back a lot of years; when Abbot Kinney Blvd. was just catching fire in the Venice Beach, CA area. The food being served there was so elevated for this district it took time and patience to get its footing. It's quite obvious at this point by what I saw today of a line so long at lunch, mind you, they are definitely established. I put my name down on the wait list, but as I was walking out I saw their satellite "Take Away" kitchen next door and that's where I ended up having lunch. I got two slices of what I would say was some of the best pizza I've ever had in SoCal. I had: Their veggie pizza so choked full of every vegetable you could possibly put on a slice. There is a nice vibe here. Located right on Washington Blvd, not far from the Venice pier, it's dog friendly, chill and friendly. Everyone here was nice and accommodating. Everything was timely, from seating, to ordering to drink and meal delivery. The Peachie Spritz is delicious and not too sweet. The Barbacoa Hash short rib may be my favorite on the menu. The meat is tender and juicy with the bowl topped with an egg. I also had the Churro Waffle that I had planned to save at least half for later. Salads often don't have enough dressing for me, but this one was dressed well and had a lemony hint to it. I really enjoyed it. Overall a 5 star for outstanding food but definitely more on the expensive side for a to go meal which knocks it to a 4 for me. Service was friendly and quick. GTA is the restaurant connected to Gjelina where you don't have to wait for a seat since it's only takeaway. Theres some standing tables for you to eat real quickly if you're in a pinch, but like almost everything on Abbot Kinney you are going to be paying a premium just due to the location. I got the tuna melt sandwich and it was okay. Good thing they take InKind so it was not as pricey. Also they have the larger menu in paper form which may be better. I recall visiting here several years ago, but obviously don't remember as I never left a review. Shops and restaurants have changed on Abbot Kinney (for the better or worse is not up to me) but I was having a tough time trying to find something 'reasonably priced' to eat. Completely unaware that lemonade at the far end no longer exists (that is how long it's been), I did see Gjelina acorss the way, remembering they had a take-away shop next door. I did stop in the actual Gjelina just to check it out, and the nice hostess let me take a look at the menu. She did say the menu was very similar to next door, with a few additional extras. I wander over, and went up to the four pizzas on display. There was no reference card to know which was which, so the nice guy explained everything to me. The Margherita is the one I went with, and he rang me up while heating the slice. They do accept cash, and there is a 15% surcharge on your bill (as opposed to the 20% in the actual restaurant) and I didn't question it this once since he let me 'short change' them with my lack of coins so I let it be. Parmesan cheese was offered (always a yes) and I was on my way. Wallking down California Ave, this was a really good slice! I don't recall what I had the first time either, and contrast to that visit which was really busy, I was the only one in shop this time. Guy who had helped me was great! Super-friendly and 'on'. Waited over an hour after paying for our food. After getting frustrated, I kindly asked how much longer it would be, only to find out they never called my name and the food had been sitting on the counter getting cold. There was no apology. They did remake the pizza, but the spaghetti was hard and tasteless, the meatballs were burned, the salad was soggy, and the new pizza was just fair at best. I always order the same tuna melt every time I come. It's a mayo-based tuna salad with capers on house baked bread with fontina and arugula. I finally found myself in Venice yesterday and needed to grab a quick bite. This could be in the top 1% of grab and go slice places. The cheese flavor alone--perfection. The sauce--a slight hint of sweetness and I'm pretty sure they must make their own sauce because I'd never tasted one quite like it! The crust--slightly chewy and with a little sponginess--amazing! Just ordered delivery from Gjelina through Postmates and we're so happy we did. We ordered 2 Margherita Pizzas, 2 Spicy Pepperoni Pizzas and 2 Market side Caesar Salads. The lettuce was crisp and the toasted bread in the salad too. Gjelina's 15 miles away so we reheated the pizzas. The crust was sourdough like, crunchy and chewy. The sauce had the perfect amount of tanginess that complements the crust well. My mom is pretty picky about her pizza, but she said that this is the best pizza she's had in a long time. And for 4 people, the food was plenty. We have an entire box of pizza for a snack later. Parking is tricky here, especially if you're not from the area but the pizza is worth the drive! Small space for takeout of upscale Italian. We started a food tour here. There's limited seating inside. We got to try a small variety of items. Sampled the gruyere pizza with carmelized onions as well as the escarole pizza. Both pizzas were tasty. I was expecting more flavor on the gruyere to be honest - it was satisfying, but I didn't feel like the flavors stood out. The escarole was my favorite. The greens were really bright with a bit of crunch, and really delicious and well-cooked mushrooms and other veggies. We got a butternut squash dish with a creme topping and that was really lovely. Brussel sprouts were also well-roasted. The restaurant has a swanky sit-down side, but the takeaway is great for getting a bite to go. Be aware... while their food can be tasty for the most part (and expensive) I came in on Friday Sept 6 at 2:39p..The review is due to their policy for not being able to remove pickled cucumbers due to an allergy to pickled things. I was told I could choose something else on the menu since they can't 'not' put pickled cucumbers on tbs tuna sandwich (I'm pescatarian so slim pickings that I like and what's worth the money they charge - fresh or not). I've heard of additions not being allowed (understandable) but saving them money by not having an item is ridiculous. I then said just give me the sandwich and I'll peel what they just put on. Separate from the sit-down full service restaurant, Gjelina has a take-away store where you can get pizza, sandwiches, and salads to-go. It's a bit pricey for a take away shop but it's the same kitchen and quality as the restaurant. Overall it's a good option if the wait at the restaurant is long or you want to take some pizza to the beach to enjoy. Seating is very limited so it's best as a pick-up and take away option. I tried their classic margherita pizza, which was very delicious and a great classic Neapolitan pizza. The sauce and cheese was high quality and well-blended with fresh basil and dried oregano on top. The crust was bubbly from the pizza oven and it was a nice size for a larger single serving (4 large slices). I think I would rather go to the Gjelina restaurant itself but the food is just as good! read more

A quick bite is exactly what I needed on a busy Saturday afternoon (when the wait time at the main Gjelina restaurant was 45 mins!), so I figured a slice of the veggie pie and a meatball sandwich would have to do. The pizza was delicious. Much better than I expected. The charred veggies really packed in so much flavor. The flat white coffee was also really good. I would skip the meatball sandwich though. Snagging a reservation at Gjelina's main restaurant can be difficult, but the GTA location right beside the restaurant is a great spot to get a slice of pizza while you're shopping on Abbot Kinney. I love grabbing a slice of a veggie pizza while I'm here, knowing that they load up on toppings. This one had a fantastic mix of crispy kale and pea shoots, topped with cheese. Even when reheated, this dough is a great mix of crispy with doughy textures from a brick oven to satisfy your craving for a solid thin slice pizza. Service is friendly and attentive. I have had the guanciale pizza several times at Gjelina, but it wasn't until May 10, 2022 that I tried it from GTA. I ordered the regular- personal size - 11" which at the time it was $22+15% service charge +tax +tip. It worked out to be around $30. Seems steep but it's sooo good! In any case, I saved a slice to take on my flight and forgot it, :(((((( so my mom ate it and asked where I got it because she was equally as obsessed. Flash forward to tonight- August 29 2022- I was deliberating between getting each of us a regular 11" or ordering the large 22". I'm on a high carb diet before having specific labs done and needed as much dough as I could get. I know some pizza places will make any size pizza with the same amount of dough, it just gets thinner the larger you get, so I called and asked. The guy who answered said it's double the dough, then sounding like he was trying to explain math to me said the regular is 11 and the large is 22. In his mind, double the diameter means double the surface area..... I decided not to try and explain how surface area works but I will post it on here just in case any one is curious ... A = r^2. R is the radius, which is half the diameter. A = 5.5^2 = 30.25 Vs A = 11^2 = 121 Ergo a 22" diameter pizza is actually 4 x the area of the 11". So, for future reference any time you double the diameter you increase the area by 4. (One 16" is four 8"...etc) I decided to go with my gut and get the large because I figured he must have been mistaken, and I suspect the large is actually made with 4 x the dough. I'm glad I did. This thing is huge and amazing!! Carb heaven! (FYI- I know I'm saying carb heaven, but really the crust on all of their pizzas is thin; it seems to be equally as thin whether you get the regular or the large. GTA is not one of those places that makes super thick dough pizzas. It's creates the perfect ratio of dough to toppings.) The 11" currently is $25 while the 22" is $55. That's before the 15% service charge, ~10% tax, and any additional gratuity. Did I spend $73 on a pizza? yes! Was it worth it? Why don't you get it and tell me. I certainly think it's fantastic!! Several meals worth in fact. Or it could feed 4 people. :) it's cut into 8, larger-than-my-hand, pieces. The ingredients are fresh and extremely flavorful. The guanciale pizza and Kale Salad are probably my two favorite items every time I go to Gjelina Take Away (Unfortunately I never manage to take a photo of these items before devouring, that's how good they are!). The service is also super fast and friendly. When you arrive, you get in line (if there is one but barely ever because they are fast and efficient) to place your order. I'd overheard the couple in front of me mention the restaurant being small, but also what do you expect? It's name has "Take Away" in it for a reason. Rest assured, for those that do want to dine-in, there are couple seats facing the window, a few around the beams supporting the building and some ledges outside that you can sit on while enjoying some fresh, thin crust pizza. read more

I was highly-recommended to try Gjelina Take Away (or GTA, for short), so the opportunity came to head over to Venice to grab some good eats. I went with my partner, and I opted for their signatures: pork meatballs and mushroom-truffle-goat cheese pizza. For some reason, the cashier forgot to add pork meatballs to the order, so after asking about it, one of the workers brought them to us and apologized for the mishap, saying that they were "on the house." Sweet! The verdict: Pork meatballs (5/5)-- holy moly, was it saucy! And so good! You could taste that the meatballs were handmade, from the texture and chewiness of it all. Pork flavor was rich and juicy, absolutely no dryness whatsoever. The sauce itself was sweet and tomato-y, and even though I'm not much of a tomato sauce kind of person, I could've totally used that leftover sauce with some pasta! Mushroom-truffle-goat cheese pizza (5/5)-- at first, I'd hesitated to order pizza, and in retrospect, I have no idea why. Although it got a bit cold as soon as we found a place to eat, it was still incredible: thin, chewy crust, ooey-gooey mozzarella, pungent goat cheese, ample mushrooms (of different varieties), and savory truffle oil to die for. Seriously, I would brave the crowded, congested streets of Venice just to have this pizza every day. Gjelina also has a dine-in restaurant nearby, and I think that would be a great place for special occasions (or a casual lunch, if your wallet can handle it). It doesn't come cheap, but the quality is spot-on, and definitely worth coming back to the traffic-mess of Abbot Kinney to enjoy. read more

Tl;dr - delicious food, small portions, extremely pricey, didn't have items Because my daughter loves ham and cheese croissants, I ordered a ham and cheese croissant. Thirty minutes after I placed my order, the restaurant still hadn't confirmed it, so I called them to find out what was going on. Apparently they were expecting a delivery from Gjusta that would include the ham and cheese croissants but the truck was running a few minutes late. Ten minutes later, the truck still hadn't showed, and the restaurant called me back again to see if they should still keep my driver waiting. That didn't seem fair, so I accepted a Danish in lieu of the croissant. Avocado toast: Perfection, as long as you're not hungry. The bread was nice and crusty around the edges and soft on the inside, the avocado was piled high with delicious seasoning, and the radish and cilantro added a nice touch, but it was a very small piece of bread, and I am not normally one to complain about portion size. Blueberry Danish: I wish it had more filling, but the fruit was delicious and the pastry was light and flaky. Sparkling ginger limeade: The name says it all. The flavors were intense. Wood fired pizza is more popular and there is an extra outdoor oven and chef to make it on weekends.
