I have been to this establishment more than once, however this review is specifically for my last visit here with Thing Two on June 24, 2021 for a Mommy and Me date. We ordered a few menu items and sat outside on our visit here. Quiche Lorraine- The dish was partially cold (warm on the top and cold in the middle). I am not adverse to eating cold quiche. However, my issue is that if the quiche is not freshly made and it is intended to be served a day after making it, then it should re heated through out. Croissant Choco- Thing Two ordered this and loved this item. It was filled with warm chocolate and the croissant was light and fluffy. Lavender Lemonade- This item was light and refreshing. There are only a few locations in the RR and ATX that serve this beverage, so it's always a treat to have this. We really liked Papi's Pies, so I hate to say anything negative about it (but I will a little further down). First the good...the food was delicious, and very artfully prepared. I had the smoked salmon sandwich, pretty much what you'd find on a bagel at most places. Here it was served open-faced on a tasty roll. For a simple sandwich, it was very pretty, with sweet, pickled onion and capers topping it. It was picture-worthy (although I didn't take one). The sandwich itself was yummy. My SH had the side salad and a croissant. The salad was a very nice mixture of greens, and deliciously dressed. The croissant was flaky, buttery, and very good. Lunch was finished off with a slice of cherry pie, which was house-baked and very tasty. Portions on everything (except may be pie) weren't particularly generous, and price/value ratio could have been higher, but there was enough food to satisfy. The ambiance was what I'd call "shabby chic", very cute, and something that looks family-owned. Lots of vegetation outside with a large patio area. As others have noted, inside dining is very limited, with around 8 smallish tables. When full, it's pretty noisy inside too. As far as the "not so good"... when we arrived, there was a sign on the door noting that they were short-staffed that day, and it was certainly true. Our server was friendly, but clearly overwhelmed by having to serve the whole restaurant (about 8 tables), and apparently inexperienced. Service was a bit slow, but definitely confused at times, with questions about orders being directed to the wrong tables, no silverware and no napkins. One other example was that I ordered wine (which she was too young to serve herself), and asked for it several times during the meal process, and it never came (although it was still on the tab when we went to pay, even though we'd finally asked it to be removed). Would we go back? Absolutely! Papi's was fun, and the food was good. I'd expect the hiccups to be a "one off". read more

Incredible, almost a secret! I was invited by a friend and I'm already planning my next visit. The service is fantastic, the food is gourmet and just the right amount. The Quiche Florentine was light and dense, smooth and crunchy, how can that be? The salad is delicious with a dressing that gives the veggies room to be themselves, vibrant. Stopped by this place while in around Rock after seeing the positive reviews. I enjoyed my time here - the owner and his grandchildren were very friendly and it was nice to support a local business. I got the Prosciutto quiche ($12.75) which I would rate 3/5. While I enjoyed the initial bites, it got very salty towards the later half. I think it could have benefitted from more tomato or less prosciutto to cut the saltiness. (I was very impressed with the amount of prosciutto though!). I was definitely full from this portion. My friends got the quiche poblano ($11.75) which they enjoyed a lot! They weren't completely full after this though. Both entrees came with a side of salad (arugula, tomato, other greens). We also ordered a chicken saltena ($6) because they ran out of beef. This was very understated and delicious! We also got the Spanish cheesecake and Key Lime pie. I'd rate the cheesecake 4/5 - I think I'm not a fan of that style of cheesecake because it was a bit too crumbly and eggy for me but that's just the style. The Key Lime pie was also 4/5 - tasty and not too sweet but the cream wasn't the best. While prices were a little high, it's understandable for this small shop in the Austin area. Also just to note, they were running out of a lot of pies while we were there, and didn't have salmon for quiche or beef for the saltena. Come here with time to spare. Service is slow which I tend to enjoy. Quiches are good. Creamy with nice crust and served with salad, perfect little portion if you're after a light lunch. The teas are high quality though not loose leaf and served on a tray, the Earl Gray being my #1. Crepe with fruit is disappointing (batter is dry and watery, not chewy like I hoped for) but Nutella makes most things edible. The Bolivian owners are wonderful, and have included tasty salteñas to the menu - Get those if you'd like a savoury pastry. All of there food I've tasted here is so delicious. Although, I do have an affinity for their Quiche Lorraine. The crust is so flaky and you can tell right away that they make all their food from scratch! They offer an arrange of breakfast/brunch items, including croissant sandwiches, the tasty liege waffle and more. Oh! We went to papis pie two weeks back on Saturday late morning. It's a family owned place, everyone are welcoming and place feels like home, loved the setting outside, like a relaxed Sitting in front porch. Ordered chicken empanadas, croissant and coffee, it took a while to get the food but they have mentioned it on menu, it's 20mins to bake empanadas. My son totally loved empanadas but I didn't like much because of the filling as soon you take a bite so much water comes out of it, and filling tastes bland, sort of like veggies and chicken in clear soup which I dint like. It took a while for us to get serviced and for the food to come out, but the staff and signs help us acknowledge that so I'm fine with it. The dishes are so tasty, so much better than they look! They look simple but has a magic to it. One of the staff even shared a little history and the way to eat of the Bolivian empanada, making us feel very welcomed. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Papi's yet!! We live this place. It's our go to brunch spot. I always get the frittata lorraine and fruit crepe with Nutella to share with my two year old. We also love their hibiscus tea. We visited most recently for mothers day and Papi had roses for all the moms who came in. So sweet! It has indoor and outdoor seating. It's not a big place but we've never had to wait very long. It's a local family run place so just have some grace when you visit. read more

I'm a pie fan. My favorite dessert! Wife and I heard about Papi's Pies from a friend and decided to give it a try. This is a very small little place with three tables. I ordered the croque Monsieur Croissant made with ham, swiss and havartii cheeses, and bechamel sauce and mustard. It is one of my favorite sandwhiches and this was the best I've ever had! Wife had Quiche Lorraine which was also delicious. For dessert I tried the Spanish Cheesecake. It is similar to a NY style cheese cake but better! My husband and I split a Reuben with salad and a strawberry rhubarb pie. The Reuben was an open faced sandwich (that was a first for me, less bread so a definite plus). It was good. We loved our experience here! This local café has an adorable garden entrance and cottage-core aesthetic. Everything from decor to tableware is eclectically "homey" in the best way. They are usually understaffed, so expect a wait when you first sit down, but sitting outside surrounded by the decorated birdhouses, hanging curtains and doors, and a slight breeze through the windchime, the wait was so pleasant that we didn't mind at all. Food came out extremely quickly once our order was taken. You can tell every staff member truly cares, especially the older man who we assume is Papi himself - he was so excited to tell us all about the delicious secret of their liège waffles! My boyfriend ordered the waffles and I ordered the croque madame croissant. The food was tasty and the entire experience was lovely. Though there was a constant flow of customers, it was not loud or overly-crowded like some other brunch places in Austin. Been coming here ever since they opened and the food is amazing EVERY TIME. Everything they have is good. Best pies we have ever had. Guava and Passionfruit pies are always a favorite, and we just discovered a new favorite pie - lemon meringue. Mile high, perfect meringue just like my Grandma used to make. I can't say better because well, it's my Grandma. Saltena's are a truly unique experience and another favorite. Just today we tried some new menu items, ham and cheese crepes and caramel sauce crepes. Again, super, super good. We also love that everything is served on nice china plates. My GF insisted we eat here yesterday for a late lunch. Neither one of us had been here before. Gotta say, it was a very enjoyable experience. We were served by one of the two owners who is from Mexico. His partner is from Bolivia. Much of the food they serve is French. The restaurant is 100 feet back from the street and you walk through their charming garden into a small intimate cafe. Their menu is oriented around baked items for breakfast and lunch. They also have a very extensive pie list. As they run out of pies for the day, they cross them off their list. At my GF suggestion, I had their Croque Monsieur Croissant. It is a croissant based "super sandwich" with Ham, Swiss and Havarti cheeses, rich bechamel sauce, and dijon mustard. It was fresh and just the right blend of flavors. Extremely good. My GF had one of their quiches, but I am not sure which one. She was as impressed as I was. She also ordered their lavender tee which I will say was quite good. Not too sweet, just the right flavor of lavender. For dessert we shared a slice of very tasty and fresh Tres Leches cake. It was very good too. Papi's Pies is a hidden gem! I feel like you would never know about this place unless you looked it up or heard about it. The restaurant is tucked away off I-35, hidden between office buildings. The nice thing about that is you can usually get seated right away and the food comes out pretty quick! As the name depicts, the pies are top notch. The strawberry rhubarb is so flavorful and the texture is just what you'd expect from the pie. My husband has ordered the waffle a few times and it is amazing... it is definitely one of the most memorable waffles he's ever had. You can taste the sweetness and sugar from the inside. During our last visit, I also tried a saltena for the first time. It reminds me of beef stew inside of a fried, breaded, and enclosed pastry turnover! We love visiting Papi's Pies. Our service was INCREDIBLE and both the servers were knowledgeable about the menu and even gave us a demonstration on how to eat the saltenas most efficiently. It was more than a meal, it was an experience. We ordered the: Waffles- INCREDIBLE! So thick and cake-like and no syrup needed, they were the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Beef saltena: hot and flaky and so savory. The raisins gave it the perfect amount of sweetness. We were even shown how to take a bite and then pour the juice out of it onto the spoon and eat it in a way that maximizes the flavor. The Mexican truffle crepe- this was a light and delicious plate garnished with beautiful tomato slices. The mushroom filling was heavenly for any fellow shroom lovers like myself. Mmmmm, I'm already craving another. Lavender lemonade- I don't drink lemonade and this one was so thirst quenching and packed with delicate flavor. Hibiscus water- delicious and refreshing Cherry pie- we got our desserts to go and I have only taken one bite of it since I've gotten back home and immediately shut the to go container because I can't bare the thought of it being gone. I should have brought the entire pie home. Mexican cheesecake- looks delicious and I haven't yet tried it, but I know with 100% confidence that it is going to be amazing. Highly recommend this place! DISAPPOINTED. Got there shortly after noon. Out of Cherry pie (what they are known for). I could understand if it was a week day near closing, but mid day on a Saturday? Ordered the pecan pie and beef Salteña. Neither was that outstanding. Went inside to order and after waiting for two people to be helped, was instructed to go sit outside and wait to have order taken and it would be after 2 other tables orders were completed. Salteñas take 20 minutes to prepare, but wouldn't take my order while I was there. Went outside and sit as instructed. Had to go back in and remind them that I was there after waiting 15 minutes for my order to be taken. If we hadn't driven 2 hours to try it out, we would have left, like MANY others that came up after us. With mediocre food, service should be better, not worse. Been there 3 years, I'm amazed they have lasted this long. read more
