Paradise Pup is to the burbs what a place like Kuma's or Hot Doug's is to Chicago. OK, I knew about it for a while now, but I never came here before till this weekend. We arrived about a few minutes before noon, and just enough minutes before the line was out the door. Paradise Pup is a crowded little place where there's hardly room to sit down for dine-ins when the line keeps getting bigger. Lucky for us, it was a warm day and there were plenty of tables outside. I had the bacon cheddar burger and my wife had a cheddar burger, while both kids went for the plain hot dog. We split a basket of fries and a side of onion rings. Regardless of the menu item, it was a can't miss choice. The burgers are astoundingly juicy, plump and satisfying. So good you can skip dinner later. Their 1/3-pound burger can outmuscle a 1/2-pounder at other joints. Onion rings have a certain snap and freshness to them like no place else. I watched as the production line worked on orders after I had placed mine. It's amazing how they get the burgers and hot dogs made, one after another, executed to perfection in one fluid motion by the cook and the guy loading up the buns. A jet of flame shoots off the grill and another masterpiece is ready to be served. While their burgers are certainly among the best I've had, I really want to try their Polish sausage next time. I got a look at those sausages and let's just say they're porn star-sized big! Or you can use one of those Polish for self-defense to fight off a carjacker. Y'know, I have to say I was pretty turned off to be hounded via message from an employee (or owner?) from Paradise Pup, nagging me about my original review and usage of the words "real cheese" and my comparison to "EZ Cheese" from a can. The Char Grill aromas emanating from Paradise Pup are incredible. If the line is long, and it often is, at least, savor the beautiful smoke floating nearby. Roll the windows down as you drive past- Yum! When I've eaten here, it's always been excellent. The Char Cheddar Burger is great! Have them prepare it Medium Rare. It's fantastic; a savory, smokey, salty, sweet, juicy burger with gooey cheddar to top it off. The Char Polish is among the best I've had. It contains all the smokey, spicy, juicy flavor a Polish should have. The shakes and malts are always great. I've had chocolate/banana, and the Oreo cookie malt several times; they're always delicious. The French fries are simple, but the fry maker has some technique that makes these simple fries great. They're always crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Grilled Onions. Always get grilled onions at Paradise Pup. They're a perfect addition to perfectly prepared food. The guys running the place are very nice, and like to talk with customers. Bring small bills! They especially like singles; fives are good too. They've got a small parking lot, and it is possible to park around the block in the neighborhood. First of all, Portillo's Cheese Fries is hans down better than the cheese fries here. Second, cheese dog was just a boiled hot dog with a slab of cheese and whatever else you want in it Lastly, I will say the char dog was pretty good. Although as a plain eater I guess it is difficult to appreciate the taste of their food. If you like Chicago-style hotdogs then maybe but I just expected something more than boiled hotdogs! Was this place worth the line, drive, and crammped place? For me, no. If I worked next to it then it will do because it is cheap and easy food. Oh and this place is CASH ONLY! For a popular place, I think they should think about credit cards because most people don't carry cash anymore. The Cheddar Burger is definitely in my Top 5 burgers ever. The patty was undeniably juicy, and the Merkt's cheddar? Well, it just doesn't get any better than that. I even ordered my burger plain, no other toppings than the cheese, and it was outstanding! As for those three layer fries with sour cream, bacon, and cheese, I was feeling generous and decided to share an order with Dominic P. Truth be told, I ate most of the fries and probably should've ordered one for each of us. What was I thinking? Fries + cheese = one of the world's greatest foods. It's cheap ($20 for two), divey (just a little shack on the side of the road), and there isn't much seating (a few tables outside and a bar with some stools inside). If you decide to grab a stool, beware - it's cramped! There isn't much room between the minimal seating area and the order counter. I took the advice of some Yelpers and went around 3:00 p.m. The lunch rush was mostly over, but there was still a steady stream of customers at the counter. We are lucky we got 4 stools or we would have ended up eating in the car. I would not recommend that - it gets a little messy. If I lived nearby, Paradise Pup would be a staple in my rotation of take-out restaurants. Honestly, the drive from Plainfield was worth it. If you're hesitant to make the drive, do some shopping at the outlet mall or pair it with dessert at Oak Mill Bakery afterwards. Sky rockets in flight.....afternoon delight! That is exactly how I felt when I put the Paradise Pup Char Cheddar burger to my mouth. Mmm, oh-so-good. I've been wanting to try the Paradise Pup for a long LONG time now and today was the glorious day that it finally happened. My cohort and I were super amped up to try this place which has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Sure, that piqued my interest but what really had me aching to try this place? The fact that they use Merkt's cheese spread on their burgers. I'd like to meet the ingenius devil who thought of this idea because you sir (or madam) are a GOD! The burger was...f*cking awesome. I'm sorry. There really isn't an eloquent way to put it. It's juicy and meaty (hehe) with a generous helping of Merkt's...and topped with grilled onions. So.good. You know what else is good? The 3 Layer Fries....although our fries were 2 layer fries b/c my lunching pal doesn't like sour cream (boooo!). They were still quite tasty - cheese and bacon makes everything better, doesn't it? Best fast food burger in Chicagoland. Period. It doesn't faze me in the slightest that I have to block out an entire afternoon to drive and wait in line for a juicy, mouth-watering burger, cheddar fries, and a strawberry shake. This excursion can take up to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and how long the line is. More, if you add in the hours I am rendered useless because I have slipped into red meat coma mode. This cash only place is an easy 5. I've been searching for the perfect burger in my life and have heard a lot about this place. A lot of times when a place is crazy popular from being on one of the many Food Network or the Travel Channel shows, I worry about the overhyped-ness (yeah, I know). But this is honestly one of the best burgers I've had in my little panda life. I've had plenty of char-grilled or "simple" burgers but this takes 1st place. The owner, who I've seen several times on TV, was there, ringing people up with a huge smile on his face despite the fact that the line was out the door. He's so damn happy because his delicious food is making the world a better place. And the 3 layer fries? I didn't expect them to be anything special, especially since my friend and I drove home to eat the meal, but they were. Oh how they were. You see, friends, everything there is made with love and it shows. The fries weren't greasy or cold. The melted cheese didn't taste like the glow in the dark cheese you get from other places. My boyfriend and I were excited to visit this establishment after watching it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on Food Network. So we planned on heading out (it's about 40-60 minutes from our house) for an early dinner. First of all, they close at 5pm. Which luckily we walked in at 5 minutes to 5pm... but we thought that was a little odd. I must say first that I am a HUGE burger fanatic. I am always talking with friends, family and clients about their favorite burger place(s). When this place was featured for their cheddar burgers my mouth was watering and I had to try it out... I really wasn't in the mood for a burger. However, my colleague was so keen on Paradise Pup for lunch that I had to accommodate him. I hope I didn't groan outwardly as we pulled up to the shack and saw the line winding well into the parking lot. There's nothing worse than waiting in line for something you don't really want. As we stood amongst the other customers, some clad in ties and other sporting shorts, the smell of ground beef patties grilling wafted through the air. My appetite for burgers quickly returned. I have learned that when you visit a new restaurant with someone who frequents the place, you can rarely go wrong by ordering the same thing that he/she does. So I requested the 1/3 lb char cheddar burger with grilled onions and "everything." The "everything" includes lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. At this no frills establishment you don't get a choice in how your burger is cooked. They prepare all the patties the same way. Also, Paradise Pup only takes cash. At $4.29 a burger, I am not complaining. My char cheddar burger arrived on a challah roll. Besides the type of bun, it didn't look like anything special. Thick and juicy char grilled burgers... these guys really know how to grill. The creamy Merkts' cheddar spread is awesome smothered on top with grilled onions. Drool... that was one damn good burger and I want some more NOW! Hand cut crinkle fries were crisp, and the sour cream, Merkts' cheddar, and bacon crumble combined for flavor paradise. If you don't feel like waiting in line, you should go in late afternoon around 2-3, which is what I did. But don't be too late, since they close at 5 pm. Basically the Paradise Pup burger is the only burger I ever really want when I really want a burger and when I can't make it to their hours hungry for one I'm like Jake Gyllanhal again getting his kicks in Mexico. Their burger is simple; A fresh third pound patty cooked so juicy it dribbles down your mouth with an incredible char flavor. I figured in order to max this burger flavor out I came up with an order which I've used since around 2002 mastered by 2003: double swiss burger, everything( lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard ), with grilled onions on dark bread( bavarian rye ) toasted and an order of ( merkts cheddar ) cheese fries... If you say your order like this the brothers appreciate it. It's clear the brothers enjoy their work and are great at what they do because of it. In the twelve years or so I've been going they have never gotten an order wrong and their burger always temporarily inducing in me a "Hey, this is the happiest moment of my life." thought, every time. On the rare occasion I stray from my order, which isn't many, it's never been a mistake. I've had their chicken sandwich, the classic char pup, their italian beef ,which is very good, and I highly recommend their shakes. Do not however use the shake to swallow down your burger because I've tried that and it doesn't work. The shakes are simply too thick and delicious to do so. Overrated Cheddar Burger. Ok, Ok, I know the beef is fresh, never frozen, and the Merkt's cheddar is supposed to be to die for, but all the hype on yelp gave this burger a little too much credit. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I can't say it knocked my socks off! The overall taste of the burger reminded me of something I could re-create on my own backyard grill. The three layer fries were tasty but portion size was dinky. However, the chocolate banana shake was perfect and made with real bananas (not flavored syrup like other joints), hand blended. Because I drove 35 min, stood in a long line cramped up inside the establishment, and the yelp rating didn't match my experience... 3 stars. p.s. I ordered 2 cheeseburgers with American, on point super juicy, good char, good bun, fries were hit and crispy, lots of attention to details, these guys have been here way before these trendy burger joints, chains. Hot dogs are classic as good as anyone's, fresh, quality ingredients. Service is fast and efficient. Italian sausage was excellent also with a nice char. I suppose it's best that PP isn't a chain, and prevents all other burger joints from going belly up. It makes a great first meal of the day at 11 AM (don't eat anything before this). A simple bacon cheddar burger on steroids, lives up to the hype and beyond. The guys are so friendly, and I told one that I'm from MN, where Guy Fieri's boss is. The pup is in fact paradise.The Merkts cheese, the lovely ground beef, the egg roll, and the magical combination of ketchup, mustard, and mayo make this burger the best in the Chicagoland area. Driving down River Rd. in Des Plaines, you can't help but smell the aroma that is Paradise Pup. This is by far THE best burger you will find in Chicago. With an endorsement from "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives", I decided to check out Paradise Pup for the first time about two years ago. You absolutely have to try to Char Cheddar Burger. Juicy, charred, cheesy, and tasty. Perfection. Fries are average, but I come here for the burger, not the fries. My only complaint is that the lines can get very long and parking can be limited, but it is definitely worth the wait. Words cannot describe how amazing this dive is! The short hours that its open really creates a demand for the joint. There was about 5-7 people in line ahead of me but the line goes by really quickly and even if the line is longer, it is definitely worth the wait. All of the employees are extremely nice, kind, and fun. I ordered a 1/3 lb Char Cheddar burger and a strawberry shake. The burger was cooked to absolute perfection. From the looks of it, all of the burgers also seem to be extremely consistent in quality and cook. The patty was thick, juicy, and delicious. Can taste the great meat quality! I prefer getting grilled onions on the burger. They must get fresh bread daily because the bread was also exceptional. I look forward to going back and trying more things on the menu. From hearing other customers talk, there were suggestions on the sausages, mozarella sticks, and the fries! The shake used REAL strawberries. It wasn't too heavy or too sweet. It was perfectly balanced and refreshing on a hot summer day. The shake is the perfect side for the burger. Only downside is that it leaves you craving more.... This is, dollar for dollar, the better burger in the city. And I hate to use the "B" word. Wiener Circle, eat your burger out. Your buns aren't good enough to hold the patties from PP. This is hands down one of the top 3 burgers I've had and I've had the almighty big mac and whopper! Just kidding but seriously I've been in search for a great burger and have found it! This burger can definitely top the burgers from blackies, Fudruckers, red robins, Brandt's-the Little Cafe, Culvers, any angus from fast food. You think burgers cannot be separated much from the rest but man these are cooked just right (medium rare) and are sooo stankin juicy. It is a mess but a beautiful mess so make sure you grab 20 napkins. I got the char cheddar burger with grilled onions and "everything". The grilled onions with the soft cheddar with the perfectly cooked meat just made this burger angelic. Not only that I got their triple layered fries and wow those were the heaviest thing but the sour cream, with the soft cheddar, and bacon was a satisfactory meal in itself. And their oreo shake was great as well, so thick and delicious as a shake should be. I will drive the 20 minutes and wait the 30 minutes just to get this burger anytime! So be prepared to wait but at least the smells and the wait will make it worth all the more. *note, only outdoor seating though they have a handful of individual seats inside. I already reviewed this place... nto sure what happened to my review. Anyways I went recently there to have another burger and was very happy with the lack of a crowd during the colder times. The double char with cheddar is as good as it gets. There is nothing crazy on the burger, just a damn tasty piece of meat that is perfectly juicy. Great burger. Not sure what my opinion on the cheese is just yet. Got the triple layer fries which were all right. A large soda goes for about 2 bucks and the banana shake that my girlfriend got was pretty good. Place is small with a small parking lot but we went on a very sunny day in the beginning of summer which made eating outside perfect. The lines are long, and they do not move quickly. Expect to wait 2-3 minutes per person in front of you. So 10 people in front of you, 20-30 minute wait. It is really inefficient how they run this place. The person will take your order. Then the same person takes your money. Same person throws your beef on the grill, makes your cheeseburger, gets your drink, then hands you your meal. They don't have stations, or people doing one task. It's quite odd, and thus, the slow lines. The grilled items are made to order, so it takes extra long. They do have the BEST fast-food type char-grilled burgers and hot dogs. I feel so wrong writing this review but with much hesitation and mixed feelings I continue. I drove nearly 40min out of the way to try a burger at Paradise Pup. I stood In line while it was 7 degrees outside and paid $12 cash for a cheddar burger and 3-layer fries. I'll start with the burger.......bread was awesome, bun soaked in all the juices and was soft with excellent flavor. The toppings were ok, they forgot the grilled onions and the lettuce just got in the way. Now the burger.....its big, it's meaty.....but the flavor.....its just ok. The cook was a perfect medium, but I felt like it needed some salt or maybe some seasoning... Or something. Just wasn't blown away like I anticipated. The 3-layer fries are freaking good. The layers of sour cream, cheese, bacon bits, and touch of salt.....make you want to eat more and more. It is literally a arterial plaque on a plate, felt like I was going to have an MI shortly after my meal. Overall, I left somewhat disappointed. However, the patty was cooked perfectly. Few, if any, burger shack style places actually cook a burger to medium. My friends and I shared the 3 layer fries. It only feels right to make this spot my first review. Came here with high expectations and was not disappointed. I got the cheddar charburger and a char dog and I honestly wanted more after. The burger was cooked perfectly and didn't leave me feeling bloated or drowsy like other burgers do. The hot dog was perfectly charred and the taste perfectly exemplified a typical Chicago style dog. The line was out the door but the line moved quickly. The best part was that once I got my food I took it home, and even after a 15 minute car ride it was still super fresh and didn't get soggy. Parking is extremely tight and limited, and there isn't much seating inside either. Overall this place is worth the hype. Not too pricey and its reputation is well-deserved. This place rocks it solid and after having made more than a couple dozen treks here, this place is consistent and you can taste the love in the food. Its a grill in a box type of joint with fresh simple ingredients and owners who take pride in their daily endeavors. On the same par with Muskies in LP., ...
