This store is a San Jose icon, and continues to hold the top spot in my heart for anything glass or accessory related. To be completely honest I don't go to many other places because those I've tried never come close to this place. They have great customer service, and although they carry some fancy more expensive stuff, I always find great pieces that are less than what I expected to spend. They have a ton of other cool stuff but it's been a long time since I've had time to do a full exploration. My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that there is SO much to look at and I never have time to see it all. Paramount Imports is a Marijuana-Connoisseur's Babylon. You walk in and immediately feel at home. Low lighting and dim, the store is cozy. Scattered about are psychedelic items of the paranormal kind. Large selection of posters, candles, incense, and apparel. Not to mention the vast colorful array of glass "tobacco" pipes and water bongs. As Keanu Reeves would put it, " WHOA!" I'm not a reefer fanatic, although I did go through a stage in college. Who in California hasn't? The fact that marijuana is illegal while alcohol and tobacco contribute to millions of deaths per year is ridiculous and makes no sense. The only reason that it is illegal is because society says so. There is no scientific reasoning to support its harmful effects; and what little there is pales in comparison to the long-term effects of alcohol, tobacco, and what the hell, let's throw over-the-counter-drugs in for poops and giggles. Marijuana, simply, makes people happy, hungry, and sleepy. I believe that it falls in line with the old adage that anything in excess, is excessive. Moderation in life, as it is in death, is key and if you bust your back being productive in your life, then you owe it to yourself to relax in a way that you deem relaxing. Highly irresponsible business. They do not place any limits on the amount of nitrous oxide you can buy which led to my husband inhaling upwards of 500 canisters per day. He is now in a wheelchair in the hospital and will be there for at least 6 weeks. I'm not blaming the store and I know it's 100% my husband's fault. However, I do find it extremely irresponsible of them to sell such large amounts of toxic drugs to somebody. I would hate for what happened to my husband to happen to someone else since he may never walk again (after less than 2 weeks of using nitrous from this store). I found receipts in the car that show he went into this store every single hour ALL DAY LONG on multiple days to buy large amounts of nitrous oxide and not one employee refused to sell to him even though they knew what was going on. In my opinion, this is an unethical business practice and I'm really disappointed that nobody showed any kind of concern. read more

Only reason I gave it four stars as opposed to five is that the parking really does suck pretty hard. You have to make sure not to park between cars or else you have to back out of the joint, which on Meridian this is no easy task!! Otherwise? Fantastic. Great selection of gifts and kitchy costumery. Their "novelty" selection leaves a lot to be desired and is quite pricey so you're better off going to a cheap seedy porn shop. Their pipe selection is expansive and lately they have Simpsons themed pipes in their cases. The staff is all really friendly and you can rest assured they know about their detox products when you ask advice :-P There's also a great incense selection along with other smelly delights for all your hippie needs. There is no shortage of soft core 1980s girl posters, generic butt-rock t-shirts, weird Cheech & Chong themed incense holders, bead curtains or Bob Marley schwag. I almost shed a tear as I walked in the newish digs. Took me back to the days of junior high. We used to take the 23 Bus from the rough streets of Cupertino down to West San Jose to do the "young stoner" tour. Stops at Guitar Center, The Music Warehouse, Streetlight Records, Tower, Taco Bravo and/or Arby's, and then, invariably to this place. Paramount Imports is like a landmark for San Jose, really. I remember their cute radio ads got my interest and so I checked the place out when I was about 14. I begged my mom to take me there. I could have stayed there ALL day. I wanted to see every piece of jewelry, every poster, every sticker. and so on! I couldn't let on that I wanted to take a look at the tobacco products so I had to check that out later when I wasn't with mom! So, now, 25 years later, I still love this store. I found some really cool Marilyn Monroe gifts for my friend and still all these years later, I could have hung out in there for a while, checking out all the cool hippy stuff! Last year, for Christmas, my hubby bought me a plush Jerry Garcia doll and it smelled just like Paramount Imports. I couldn't decide whether to give them 4 or 5 stars.. so it's sort of in the middle. Great place, there is a ultra chill vibe here. The workers are cool and the prices are super reasonable. You get a throwback vibe when you walk in. Most game retailers are usually filled with gape (not necessarily a bad thing) but it's cool in that you can go and buy juice, equipment and other recreational items. What I find that is unique to this place is you will NOT find pizzos (glass pipes for meth) keeps the store classy. Not judging, but it is classy. We came in to the store to get our first bong. The staff was very helpful when we needed to look at every bong trying to find a good one within our price range. Stopped in the other day to get some shisha (hookah tobacco). The selection was limited to only three or four brands so I decided to go with the Hookah-Hookah "Summer Breeze Garlic & Mint". I figured that in addition to being a tasty smoke, my 1978 custom Winnebago would smell wonderful and remain aromatic for the people who grace my life, such as: mom, dad, grandma, AND my entire Wishnik collection. Parking wasn't an issue since I rarely leave my tenement on wheels and can make do with a little parking hassle when I do go out. Needless to say, my Winnebago reaches a length of 42 ft. (depending on the weather, of course), which did result in some angry - yet peaceful, very peaceful - hippies not being able to park their Prii (that's plural for Prius - basically double-hybrid, but not really). I stopped here to buy a dugout and bat for a friend as a gift. The staff were super-nice, even with how busy they were, which in itself was a little shocking! The place seemed lively rather than lurid, and every person, customer and employee, had a smile. A nice treat these days! The clerk informed me that we could do the dugout that I wanted to get and just swap the aluminum bat it came with with a glass one, and they'd just sell the aluminum one separately, charging me the difference in price. While this is what you might expect to be 'fair,' I generally expect this sort of thing to be viewed as a hassle, ergo I was ready to pay for both and just have an extra bat. I had a really great experience today when going in to buy a new water pipe. The downstem on my pipe broke and I figured I could pop in to get a replacement. Instead of a replacement I found a whole new piece... a massive upgrade. I figured that not replacing the downstem was like getting 10% or more off and the new piece is so much thicker and durable that I bet it'd outlast 2-3 of the cheaper ones. The service was really good. Paramount has a lot of cool stuff and it's a fun place to browse, though I didn't really do much of that today. I like to be shown what I ask to see without salesman-upselling or pressure. If I'm unclear about something I will ask. I've had previous positive experiences with the person who helped me (I believe his name is Greg: dark curly hair, a bit of grey in the beard, thin/tall, has worked there a long time) and today was about as good as it gets. "Hey, can I help you?" "Can I see that and that please?" "Sure." (hands them over) "I like this one... it's nice and thick; probably hard to break." (nods) "Let's take this one, please." "Cash or credit?" AS EASY AS IT GETS! :) I was also very impressed with the care taken to wrap the glassware in protective material; he did a fantastic job of it. He even wrapped the stem and the piece separately, which was awesome. I've had the "unwrap a new piece and the stem goes flying... (tinkle, tinkle)... OMG DID IT BREAK???" experience and it sucks. Fortunately I got lucky last time but this time luck wasn't a factor. My purchase was extremely well wrapped/prepared for transit. I have been a fan of this place for roughly 20 years or so. Way back when they had Saddle Rack up the street. It was great then, and is still great now. I revisited this place today as it is nearing x-mas and I was bored and I know I can always find something special to buy for myself or others as a gift. They even had (2) huge dogs behind the counter. I asked if they were their mascotts and they said Yes. haha... The clerk that helped me went out of his way to update me on some of his products and showed me samples of many items. With the huge selection and the fact that I am Libra I could never make decisions very easily myself. The clerk plopped down the exact item in my budget and it was sold. This place is one stop shopping for all my friends, even the non smokers like myself. I pretty much stick to the left side of the store which has all the clothing, and cool stuff. Came here one night with a couple of girl pals after a night of drinking and came out with an assortment of wonderful stuff! The friend got a green knitted lumberjack hat that was too funny and I got a AC/DC Zippo for the boy for XMAS and some totally cute Bebe sunglass for $5 for myself, and a jewelry/change plate with bugs on it for my friend's XMAS present. There selction of odds and ends is pretty cool too. My cousin who is now in her 40s use to skip HS and come here, so for old time sake I got her a KISS apron for XMAS from here (she is also a big KISS fan). They also have lunchboxes, rubber duckies, magnets, etc. I love the homemade incense here and the selection of posters. Got an oldschool Dawn of the Dead poster here and matching Dawn of the Dead playing cards. The workers are sometimes a little rude or weird but the guy who helped me with the apron was super nice but their parking sucks. Park across the street at University Art and walk across. Also don't talking about the pipes being for drugs here. We heard some kids come in and say something about using something for weed and the worker was like "No, this is for Hash....Browns. They have a huge glass and paper selection, so you won't have a problem of finding something you need. They have it all! Staff here is always helpful and friendly. They are always patient and very knowledgeable if you have any questions or are looking for something and are picky like me. I gave Paramount 5 stars because of their items, friendliness, service, and the overall atmosphere. But if there is one downside that would dent the full rating, it's parking. If its the weekend before a 4th of July or some type of three day weekend or "special holiday," parking can be an issue getting in and out while other cars are getting in and out. LOL.
