What is a runner's greatest reward? Why of course, it's Dessert! Clyde R had suggested that this was an excellent bakery so since it was nearby to my hotel I decided, "Why not?!" I came by immediately after my filling lunch at Isabella's. Clyde suggested there is a really good bread here that the bakery specializes in. While I definitely filed that information away for a future visit, my main goal on this visit was dessert. Happy as I was to look down into the pastry case to find a delicious looking assortment of cake slices and individual desserts I stood there indecisive on what I wanted to try. There was no refigerator in my hotel room so I had to settle on just one treat. The bakery café has abundant seating across from the pastry cases and in a separate section just steps above. In addition to the desserts they have a wide assortment of breads, breakfast pastries, sandwiches (both pre-made and made to order), salads, clam chowder and hot or cold beverages. My cake slice was fabulous. The bottom layer was thin dark chocolate ganache topped by a thin piece of liqueur-soaked cake, cappacino flavored buttercream, a butter cake that actually tasted like butter, dark chocolate ganache, more liqueur-soaked cake, more buttercream and finally a thicker layer of dark chocolate ganache on top. The slight saltiness in the butter cake offset the sweetness of the ganache and the buttercream very nicely. The cake slice was rich and fabulous at the same time and the perfect reward to my accomplishment that morning. read more

Paris Bakery's Almond Croissant!! My mom and I came in to enjoy a few desserts and coffee. We both ordered the luscious Almond Croissants and a mini Vegetarian Pizza ($2.00). This is the first time my mom ordered this croissant and she was blown away. It's moist and magical with profound flavors! The sweet silky almond filling makes me swoon everytime. Reading David P.'s review reminded me that I should do mine as well, before I forget. Every time I visit Monterey, I always pass by this place. A lot of foot traffic in and out of this place. There are large display cases in this place: 2 for the danishes, croissants, scones, etc., and 2 others for desserts. Very good assortment. Breads are proudly displayed on the back wall behind the counter staff. Soups and sandwiches are also served. I ordered a raisin scone an croissant with a coffee one morning from a very nice counter person. Both tasted pretty good, fresh, not dry, as I expected. So this review is more about the staff than the food itself. Last month (Nov 15th) I decided to meet up with a friend from out of state at Paris. While I was finding parking, she was asking if I could hurry up because a creepy guy (possibly mentally ill) inside kept harassing her (he was sitting across the counter), by saying things like "oh if I could put a baby in you" and so on. When I arrived, he continued to say things and the staff just continued to ignore him. We decided to order and sit on the other side away from him (wasn't going to let him ruin our coffee date) and later saw one of the staff ladies chatting/smiling with him, like he's a regular. Unfortunate/upsetting to see a staff be okay with such behavior in their establishment. This is a five star bakery! Wait till you see the photos I am going to post (don't have itunes on my laptop...will do it when I get home). Flakey, yummy croissants filled with sweet gooey stuff... like cream cheese, cherries, or chocolate. I am sure they have other flavors but choices are a bit limited in the late afternoon, an hour before closing time. Even then, they did not disappoint! I had two chocolate and two cream cheese croissants and two cups of coffee.... better than Starbucks! You can taste the quality ingredients that goes into their products...and can tell that they are made with tender loving care! :) mushy, I know... but damn good! The cappuccino was good but the latte came out hot and when we asked for it to be iced like we ordered they just poured out the hot latte with steamed milk into a plastic cup. Paris! My favorite spot to grab a yummy tuna sandwich or salmon caper sandwich, or a quiche. I need to try out their iced teas. One of my favorites is the lemon meringue. I truly love their tiramisu. Their cheese danish is just right as far as sweetness it certainly doesn't taste like excessively-it-will-hurt-your-gums packaged cheese danish. Honestly--I prefer my pastries here than from Starbucks anyway I said it. It's because they're fresh. I wanted to try out the coffee cake today because someone complained about it yesterday but I couldn't help to notice it was all gone before I arrived which obviously that means is a popular item there. This is one of those places that I will keep dreaming about until the day I get to come back here, but then I will start dreaming all over again. Not only is Paris Cafe one of the most charming bakeries I've ever been to, but it really has some of the best food/coffee I've ever tried. I was in Monterey for a few days, but it's with huge regret that I only got to eat here once. We came here for breakfast on our first day, and honestly, I wish it was on our last because nothing else we tried came anywhere near as good as what Paris had to offer. For the food, all three of us ordered Croque Monsieur with turkey instead of ham. It's white bread with Bechamel sauce, turkey, and swiss cheese, served hot. We also had Cafe au lair which was EXCELLENT and it came in the biggest cup ever! As for the desserts, we kinda all pigged out and had different things. My sister went for their almond croissant which is what they are mostly known for. After a very thought through decision, I had the chocolate banana croissant and I def do not regret my choice. There are so many goodies to pick from, it's impossible to describe in words. The people working there are incredibly nice and you can tell this is a very popular place because it was packed, and for a good reason! I stumbled upon this place before a graduation ceremony because it was the only place open at 7 am and I am not great with direction. Serendipity was in play and lead me to what is probably the greatest almond/chocolate croissant in Monterey. It's not very close to Cannery Row or any of the hotels but I think that's what's great about it. It's not really affected by tourism traffic so it stays pretty quiet at what should be peak breakfast and lunchtimes. The seating isn't that comfortable-especially their high tops but what it lacks in creature comforts, it more than makes up in delighting the taste buds. Their lattes were good, strong, and smooth throughout. Even though the business behind the counter is constantly hustling, the kind faces behind the espresso machine and bakery counter are always smiling and politely explaining the differences between one pastry and the other. We couldn't even finish our respective bread bowls (I had a feeling we should have just shared one bread bowl and a sandwich to begin with). I ordered the apple pecan coffee cake. It had a croissant-like base, and the apples were delicious. It wasn't as sweet as it looked, which turned out to be a plus. I tried the chocolate croissant, which was nice and buttery (always a plus), but a little on the softer side. I like a little more crisp to my croissant, but that's probably because I'm used to the way they are made in America. Still tasty, though. The blueberry and cinnamon scones were bready and light - different from what I'm used to in a scone, but I've seen scones made in so many different ways, it's hard to really know what a true scone is supposed to taste like (in my opinion, at least). Went in for a few mini-pastries since Bechler's was closed and while they looked like eatable art, for $2.50 each, these lacked any flavor or freshness, tasting like Corn-starch sculpture. Both croissants came to about $5 and change, I believe. We shared the ham and cheese croissant first. It was a soft, very buttery, sort of mushy texture, though it was decent. The chocolate almond croissant had a much more dense texture. It was filled with an almond filling, and had plenty of chocolate. This was more filling, between the two croissants. The service was helpful, and pretty average. The girl was nice enough to offer to heat up the ham and cheese croissant. The almond croissant was wonderful as well--no almond paste (which I was a tad disappointed in) but the creamy moist texture inside was nice...not too sweet, just right. The carrot cake on the other hand was odd...a bit dry, carrot cake is typically very moist, and the frosting wasn't the traditional cream cheese frosting, rather it was an odd thick buttercream-like frosting (difficult to describe, but definitely not cream cheesey at all, which was a bummer). I have an obsession with well made croissants. This place has the most unique fillings such as strawberry almond, chocolate banana and other traditional types. I had the strawberry almond and it was heaven. the edges were crisp, flaky, you can taste the layers. The croissant is baked in the shape of a circle and cut in half. It is topped with a light marzipan, fresh strawberries and powdered sugar. It was a delight to enjoy with a latte. I will definitely be back here next time I take a staycation in Monterey. They also serve coffee and the other cafe type drinks. The kids wanted the chocolate croissants and I wanted to try a regular croissant. Wifey got a custard brioche and a cinnamon twist. Oh and at the last second I added a slice of quiche. Best decision ever. The chocolate croissant and the regular croissant wasn't as good compared to the one we got from Crepes of Brittany but this one held there own. Flaky and buttery. The only thing I don't get is it isn't warm. Maybe that's the way it is supposed to be. The brioche was very scrumptious with a soft crust and a subtle sweetness that creeps up. The cinnamon twist was more of a cookie and lacked that cinnamon bang but I think that was a good thing. Sometimes places drown it with the cinnamon and sugar but this one was just right. Now the quiche...holy moly. Best ever. I am not sure what was in it but it was goooood!!! Crust was delicate and filling moist and fluffy. I've been here a few times now and I always get the almond croissant and the strawberry tart. I've never had an almond croissant before coming here. After I tried it, I was amazed! I tried some almond croissants from Trader Joe's at an event for work and it just wasn't the same. Paris Barkey's almond croissants are "messy" (but still beautiful), flaky, and flavorful. If you come to Paris Bakery and try one pastry, make sure that it's the almond croissant. It's filled with some sort of almond filling and it really makes the almond croissant delicious. The Paris Bakery is a Monterey institution. I remember when they first started and were nothing more than a hole in the wall. Needless to say, I've been patronizing this place for a long time. I really like their chocolate-almond croissants, though some people might find them a tad too moist and not crisp enough. The flavor is exceptional, though. My sister used to buy a box of these to take home to LA whenever she visited. I know some people will also find these to be too sweet for their taste, but, hey, what do you expect from the words almond and chocolate? They also have really fine desserts at probably the best price in the area. For a party I will buy a large pear tart, which never fails to satisfy. All the other desserts I have tried have been very tasty. I'll sometimes stop for lunch and get a ham and cheese croissant or their version of the BLT, which is quite good. It can get quite busy and chaotic at lunchtime, though. The bread is decent, but generally American-style French bread, despite the name. read more
