Stopped by with a buddy for lunch as we were stuck in Albany for an extra day. Walked in the place and and looked like a decent pub/restaurant with a long bar on the left, tables upfront and toward the right and a pool table and large stage in the back. There were a few locals at the bar wearing flannel shirts and baseball caps and a more business like crowd at the tables. We bellied up to the bar and I asked the bartender if they served food at the bar and he came back with something about me "if I'm old enough"(I'm almost 60 and look it). I assured him I was twice his age. He just kinda looked and my friend made a joke about how I have no sense of humor to cut the awkwardness. We went to the bar ordered a couple of drinks(he forgot my water on the side) then ordered some food. The place has a kind of New Orleans theme to it but had no gumbo or Jambalaya which is kind of a bummer since they are staples in that kind of cooking. Since it was Lent, my friend ordered a catfish sandwich with fries and since I'm non practicing I ordered their black and blue burger(burger with blue cheese and bacon)with Cajun fries. We shared an order of fried pickles. The first thing I noticed was a bunch of people waiting around for their food. I also noticed that the bartender seems to be the only employee in the place, unless you count his very cute dog. As the time kept going it was a good 30 minutes before the fried pickles came out. They were seriously over cooked but might have been good if they were cooked correctly. I think I almost lost a tooth biting into them. My buddy who has fake teeth ripped into them with little problem, then again he had a few drinks in him. I almost forgot, I ordered a Rye and the pour was excellent, zero complaints on that end. My friends Guinness was poured correctly which is sometimes thought to find. We waited about another 1/2 hour and the food came out. The bartender apologized and we said no worries. My burger looked good but my fries were so over cooked they seemed like burnt potato sticks. One bite and they just tasted burnt and cooked hard through. Quiet possibly the worst fries I have ever had in my life. I couldn't even drown it in ketchup to get taste and dryness. My burger was cooked well past medium and the bun seemed like it was a week old. My friends fries were the same but he said he liked the sandwich. All the while as I was trying to eat my burger, the dog was brushing up against me like a hooker in the Dominican Republic. I mean he had his head on my thigh and was pushing hard. I was going to give him some but I was worried that it wasn't allowed and that he would choke on the dryness. It dawned on me that this poor bartender might also be cooking. My friend ever the sleuth, walked back and looked in the kitchen where surprise surprise no one was to be found. No wonder the bartender seemed confused and a bit surly. The poor guy was wearing 4 hats; cook, bartender, waitress and busboy (it took quite a while to clear out the tables). Anyway, as we got up to leave the guy apologized for the wait and we wished him well. Overall, we had a bad dining experience mostly because they were extremely short handed(I hope). I'm giving them two stars because the drinks were made right and with a great pour. I blame management who needs to properly staff the establishment. I may go back for drinks only. read more

Ok Yelp, we were there & I can assure you they are open on Sundays. We were staying in Albany at the Holiday Inn Express and asked if there were someplace close by where we could have a relaxing dinner. The gentleman at the desk told us about this place & off we went. Not sure what I was expecting but this was great! Their menu is Cajun. I ordered the alligator bites appetizer & the pulled pork po boy sandwich. It was loaded with pork & their special Cole slaw. My friend had a Cuban Sandwich which had a Cajun kick to it. I had iced tea, he had KCBC Superhero Sidekick IPA. Service was excellent despite every outside table being full. Great old building, too. read more

We each had the po boys with hand cut fries They even accommodated a special request for crawfish. It was so good we came back for dinner. Very random and cool find in Albany. After miles and hours of back roads, I ended up here looking for something to munch on and a bathroom to use and was really pleasantly surprised. The waitress was so friendly. She was knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. The menu is very New Orleans-esque with Cajun items. Sadly, the alligator bites were out of stock because that sounded different! I went with a local cider which was super delicious and refreshing and actually led me to my next destination - a local cider brewery. We also went with a pumpkin beer that was equally good. For food, I went with the shrimp n grits. I thought it would be cheesy grits but they were pretty bland so I traded meals and ended up eating a huge, cheesy plate of crawfish mac n cheese. Yes, crawfish! Oh and sausage. I was there for the crawfish though and it did not disappoint. The portion was so huge that even with two of eating it by the end there was more than enough to take home and have another meal. The bathroom was also interesting. The doors slid closed in a not very intuitive way and I thought they might be broken until another customer came in and we figured it out but might be a design flaw if it takes two people to figure out how to close the stall doors! Great find in Downtown Albany. I loved the atmosphere although I didn't even stay for the live music. The menu was varied and I will be back to try more! I got the shrimp po boy which was fresh and light, especially for being fried, along with the Cajun fries with just enough spice! I met a fellow who had recently moved to Albany from New Orleans. Let's call him JC. Somehow, as we were talking, the conversation swung around to food. One thing leads to another, and soon he's telling me his secret. JC had discovered that Parish Public House was importing its po boy rolls from Louisiana. He said to skip everything else except the shrimp po boy. And that, he insisted, I would need to order with double shrimp. This is the kind of precise recommendation one needs to navigate the landmines of large menus pervasive in the Capital Region. The menus are too damn long. But that's a rant for another day. So as soon as I'm able, I head down to Parish Public House for a half shrimp po boy with extra shrimp. And you know what? It was a fine sandwich. Truth be told, I'm not a po boy expert. The last one I had was over a decade ago, and that was in California. It's been over 20 years since I've been in New Orleans. And I don't think the po boy is supposed to really be a show stopper of a sandwich. It's cheap fried seafood, shoved in a cheap roll. They were truly once the food of the poor. It was certainly unimpeachable. And with double shrimp, the shrimp were literally overflowing. The place was certainly good enough to return, although on my second visit, I was on some stupid diet. No fried foods for me. So I went with the blackened catfish sandwich with cajun slaw instead of chips, and the mayo for the sandwich on the side. And again, while the food didn't send me into ecstatic fits, it was perfectly fine. Maybe the spice rub was a bit salty, but I love salt, so I didn't mind. I'm an old man, so everything is starting to feel expensive. But for a sit down restaurant meal in downtown Albany, lunch was perfectly reasonable. There is a very real possibility that the double-shrimp po boy is a 4* or even 5* version of the form. If you're a po boy expert like my friend JC, I'm really curious to see what you think. And I'll look forward to getting back down there for another one, maybe in the company of JC himself when the diet is over. In the meantime, should someone suggest lunch at PPH, I'd be fine with that. I'd totally get that blackened catfish sandwich again, and it would give me an excuse to try some more of their sides. read more

Food is great here. Not sure why anyone would rate it less than 5 stars. Po Boys are all Slamming. One of the best Cuban sandwiches I've ever had even after living in Miami. Then Collard greens are literally the best I've ever had, I get them no matter what I get here. Definitely worth a stop. Bartenders are cool as well. So we came here because we looked online and the menu looked great and it was very close to our hotel. We got there about 2 hours before they closed. Once we got there we were told it was a limited menu and they were out of a lot of items. We had a burger, some wings and fried pickles. The burger was good. I did ask for bacon and cheese but I did not get the bacon on it. We did the Cajun wings and they were also good. Fried pickle chips were very good. Our bartender was very nice, she was busy so it took a few minutes to get our first beer and our second beers but again she was busy. I had a layover in Albany and asked the hotel staff I was staying at of a good restaurant in the area. Both members of the front desk staff recommended the Parish Public House for the food and ambience. Having been to New Orleans a little earlier in the year, I was excited to visit a restaurant that specialized in Louisiana cuisine. My wife and I shared a bowl of gumbo and their broccoli and cheddar soup and both were delicious and very filling. We enjoyed salads as our main entrees, with the Chef Salad featuring some of the biggest hunks of meat and cheese I've ever seen. This place definitely gives you your money's worth. The decor was very cool, especially the long bar and copper plate wall panels. The coolest feature of the restaurant had to be the funky music playing over the PA. It kept our toes tapping throughout the whole dining experience. Friendly staff. Great food. We look forward to our next stopover in Albany and our next opportunity to return to the Parish Public House to try the Po'Boys and other Cajun specialities the restaurant offers. read more

I'm not sure if the management changed a few months back but I've been left very disappointed with the beer selection and the quality of food. We recently move to downtown and decided to try some of the local establishments. There was quite a few of us, so we tried a good breadth of the menu. We found the service to be a bit slow and felt forgotten about at times, but both servers were very good and extremely pleasant when they stopped by. The food itself was quite disappointing. The catfish came on a plate with white rice and steamed broccoli. No other spice/garnish/etc.... Looked like hospital food was how I would describe it. The rice wasn't the nice buttery, fluffy rice either. The shrimp and grits were a bit too vinegary, too soupy, and the shrimp were overcooked. The turkey sandwich was good, but the chips it came with were burned to point of being bitter. The mac and cheese had a small amount of heat to it, and had a generous portion of crawfish and sausage, but was bland otherwise. The burger was good. Overall, not a bad place to get a beer or glass of wine, and something simple like a burger or sandwich, but stay away from the entrees section, and expect to wait. read more

I was happily surprised when I came here. A bunch of friends wanted to go, but they don't have too many things I liked eating (aka most things are fried and have gluten). Thankfully, they labeled the gluten-friendly menu options and there were plenty to choose from. I got the blackened catfish. It was sooo good. The catfish was perfectly moist and tender on the inside with a nice seasoned crisp on the outside. The broccoli was the most perfectly cooked broccoli I have ever tasted. I've visited the Parish Public House twice during travel to Albany, and I really enjoy the food. I enjoyed the Hummus & Veggie Po Boy on my first visit, and the Veggie Burger on my second. Both are absolutely delicious, and generous portions. I think the prices are very fair as well. The restaurant itself is pub style. While clean, the tables can be quite wobbly. I also took a star off my rating because I called the restaurant and no one ever answered the phone. Later, while eating at the restaurant, I thought it was interesting that the hostess let the phone ring continuously while she chatted with people at the bar. In that respect, the customer service could be better. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend the Parish Public House. It has something for everyone on the menu, and I would definitely stop by again if I'm ever in the area. read more

We were in Albany three days ago for the Twenty One Pilots concert and I was standing outside the Times Union Center looking for a place to get takeout food. I saw the Parish Public House on the Yelp app. I saw Cajun/Creole and we darted immediately for the Public House. Let me say that the atmosphere was amazing for a Wednesday night at 6 pm. This place looks like it should be in Manhattan. Very decorative and Cajun music blasting in here was a nice touch. For the food, my mom & I split a Shrimp Po Boy sandwich. It's been a long time since I had one and this was phenomenal. Perfectly seasoned plump, juicy and large fried Shrimp. On a toasted roll with mayo, lettuce & tomato. So good and it was a huge sandwich. My brother had Chicken & Sausage Gumbo with a side order of Alligator Bites. I didn't taste the bites but they looked awesome. I would strongly recommend you stop here if you're in Downtown Albany. The vibe of the Parish Public House is infectious. They have live music here often and they host Cajun and Zydeco dance lessons here too. I give it five stars because for getting food in a hurry, all my expectations were met and then some. I have been going to Parish for over 3 years now for lunch and sometimes after hours. There are 2 reasons I am giving Parish 4 stars. 1st reason- Most of my experiences at Parish have been positive--both food and service good, live music in the evenings (check website for performers), pool tables and decent prices on bourbon. I have always enjoyed the crawfish quesadilla, BLTs (the chips are addicting) and the shrimp and grits. 2nd reason- Today however, I ordered one of their specials, potato pancakes (latkes) with corn beef and cheddar. OMFrigginG! I missed out on the large latkes during St Patrick's Day. As of today they are served as an appetizer--sadly smaller in size. So I ordered a second order. If anything needs to be on a permanent menu it's these beautiful fattening latkes. read more

Not being from Albany, I was looking for an eatery which offered more than just food and drink. I was looking for a little "southern hospitality." I found that and more at Parish! Not only was their Cajun cuisine delectable, the service was 5-star. Can you believe that they smoke their own bacon AND hand-process their andouille sausage?! Plus they support local farmers, growers, and brewers. I can't say enough about the caliber of the owners and the way Parish is managed. Try the gator! With Cajun mayonnaise! And a craft beer. Where should I start? From when we got sat till the end of our meal was horrendous. The guy that not only handed us the menus and made us seat ourselves was rude, but told us we can't sit at a four top by the window because there were only two of us. Waitress was nice but took 15 minutes to get us drinks. Drinks came another 15 minutes later. I ordered an appetizer and my gf ordered a salad. Before I had time to order drinks and choose an entree she snatched the menus and ran back behind the bar. My appetizer came out with our meals not before which was frustrating. The fried pickles were so sour I could barely eat them. My turkey club was so dry I didn't touch it. My gfs salad was the only decent thing for the whole visit besides my beer that came from a tap.
