Parthenon Gyros is the best place to get gyros in Madison, hands down. The restaurant itself is quite large, sitting between State Street and N Henry. There is usually parking to be found on the Henry side, though you have to enter at the State Street side. The interior is nothing special, but that's not what you go to Parthenon's for. You go for the food, and the food never disappoints. (However, when the weather is nice, the rooftop seating area is pretty darn awesome!) Obviously the gyros are the best item on the menu. That's their jam. It's what they do. And they do it perfectly. But, don't get me wrong, everything else they do is great, too. The french fries are always perfectly battered and crisp and salty - so good. The baklava is pretty tasty as well. I have never had anything that I wasn't happy with. And, can we talk about service while we're at it? The gentlemen I have seen behind the counter are always, ALWAYS in a good mood, friendly, upbeat, and most importantly, efficient. This is one of those places you only think about after maybe a few too many drinks, but you're actually doing it a huge disservice. The food is darn good, and the thyme they put in the meat is standout amazing! This is a great place to go when you want solid food for a good price and don't really care too much about atmosphere. Quick, easy, simple, great! Parthenon had one of the best gyros that I have ever had! I got the gyros combo which was served with some perfectly crunchy fries. The gyros here are so fresh tasting! Their Greek yogurt which they make themselves is amazing! I'm also a huge fan of the fries. The customer service is great too and the couple who owns the restaurant has put a lot of pride of ownership into the ambiance of the building. I love their OPA! wall and the Wisconsin Badger pride. Went in with pretty tempered expectations considering the Yelp reviews. I just really wanted a gyro, and I haven't really been pleased by any of the ones I've tried thus far in Madison. This was easily the best gyro I've had, in Wisconsin or otherwise; the meat was fantastic, and for me, that more or less defines the quality of a gyro. The fries were decent and the baklava was wonderful, but the meat on the gyro alone will get me back here (probably frequently, despite the drive from Middleton). The service was also really great. We explained that we hadn't been to Parthenon before and the cashier walked us through their gyros and recommended a few things. The perfectly seaoned gyro meat is accented so nicely with the rings of onions and tomato slices... and the tzaziki sauce on top..... perfect! A gyro is probably one of my favorite sandwiches as it stands. That was until yesterday. I ordered lunch from here through a third party and was super disappointed with the gyro. It was gamey and tasted like straight up hair. On top of that, instead of being succulent and tender, it was SO chewy. I'm glad I didn't get the larger size only to throw most of it in the trash. I didn't go hungry however, as the chicken skewer was the saving grace of my order, along with the house made hummus and grilled pita. I would not recommend nor will I be returning for another go. Parthenon sets the bar for the gyro experience. They are the "Mona Lisa" of Madison gyros. They are the ones that all other gyros will be measured against - and likely fall short of. The standard gyro/fry/soda order is more than enough for a meal. The meat is plentiful as are the toppings. The fries are done well and are handy for mopping up what's left behind form the gyro itself. Parthenon offers a delicious and consistent experience. If you want more, you can get the gyro plate, but you'll want to tack on an extra pita or two. Go to the rooftop on a nice day to enjoy your meal or park yourself somewhere along the street to people-watch while you dine (Springtime is a great time downtown...) For those of us on the perifery, it's not hella-convenient to head downtown for lunch. But, if you can get yourself down there, it's worth the trip. read more

The best thing about this place in a college town over the summer is that it's open when it's late. I ordered the Chicken Caesar Sandwich meal. I wasn't very impressed with it. The chicken came on two skewers and was overdone and dry. The romaine lettuce sat on the pita and it was over saturated with Caesar dressing and parmesan cheese. The fries that came with it were not very fresh - some were crispy, many were mushy. Price-wise, I don't think it's fair to charge another $2-3 on top of the sandwich for a negligible amount of fries and a fountain drink. I'll start off with the great things-- We had takeaway food. Service was excellent and efficient. We loved the fries and the gyro meat was delicious. My salad was only ok. Iceberg lettuce and big pieces of tomato and cucumber made for a rather plain salad. The kalamata olives were put-in which I know is traditional but ultimately not ideal in a salad. The tzatziki was a bit different than we were used to- didn't have mint or cilantro but was nice and garlicky. When I crave gyros, Parthenon Gyros is my homeboy. This place is affordable and fast and also has plenty of seating. I almost always go here for gyros, which is large and satisfying. I've also had the Hercules plate (which is a Greek meat fest) and the spinach pie, which is pretty good as well. My only complaint is that they seriously need to change the channels on the TVs. While the setting leaves something to desired, it's always been worth waiting through the lines, under flourescent lights, listening to loud students carrying on. Counter service, not particularly clean, but strictly about food. Large multi-story restaurant. I've only ordered gyros and gyro platters, but many of them; maybe a soda every few years. Must get extra tzatziki to compliment the perfectly overfilled pitas. I typically go at late hours, either after a long night of bar hopping, a bachelorette party, birthday party, or for some reason after trips to the ER. It's a good tradition to consider.
