It's true that Party Cake Bakery changed ownership a year or so ago. The new owners are doing their best to keep this landmark business operating. I know they, like many other small businesses have had staffing problems. At one point the head baker left and the replacement left a lot to be desired. Rather than increase prices the owners reduced the size of the servings .. this was a mistake that they have since corrected. I have been stopping often to buy breads, donuts, cookies and danish pastries and they were back to the size and taste I grew up with. I suggest giving them another chance. Staffing is still an issue so call ahead to make sure they are open when you wish to come by. read more

My daughter was celebrating her birthday, so it was my job to take care of the cake. Party Cake Shop has been our go to for cakes since our kids have been little. The shop was busy when I stopped in, (Wednesday around 9am) with customers picking up paczki and ordering other goodies. Everyone behind the counter was busy, but helpful answering questions and filling orders. The 7-inch round half and half (layer of white and layer of chocolate cake) was plenty for our group of 4. There's an information board about the different cake sizes and flavors of what's available if you aren't sure what you want or need. The cake was nice and tasty, and nicely decorated with the light, tasty buttercream frosting. We've never had an issue with Party Cake Shop and have enjoyed their donuts and paczki too. read more

The almond cake torte is so good. It is very moist and the icing is not heavy at all. The only thing I would recommend is almond flavoring in the cake, oh yea that would take it up another level. Visiting the Party Cake Shop is like reading the sweetest romance, such as If The Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy. From the storefront to the interior with glistening display cases filled with sweets (and savory options), the focus is clearly on the deliciousness. For me, doughnut shops (and bakeries alike) are judged by their Boston Creme doughnut. I look for one-of-a-kind doughnuts (so they're not perfect) that are plump with custard with a great chocolate frosting. Party Cake Shop did not disappoint; in fact, I'd say that have reorganized my hierarchy of doughnut deliciousness, claiming the #2 spot! Pricing is reasonable and quite good for this level of drooling goodness. My boyfriend prefers apple fritters, and he was impressed with the flavor and sweetness in ratio with size, saying usually it's one of the other -- but Party Cake Shop managed both taste and size! Just like any other doughnut consumer, I truly believe that I'm the connoisseur when it comes to Pittsburgh doughnuts so if you haven't stopped by the Party Cake Shop, you're truly missing out. I love this bakery. I have been to my fair share of bakeries in the area, and this one definitely makes the best paczki's. A paczki is a Polish donut filled with either cream or fruit filling, then coved in sugar. We arrived here around 8:45/9:00am to get only paczki's and unfortunately they only had a couple left. This was not to much of a surprise to us considering they opened at 6:00am. Once it was our turn to order, we asked if there were any more, but that was all they had at the moment. A man from the back of the bakery came out and told us they were making more and they would be ready in about an hour. I am not sure if he is the owner, but he was extremely kind and thanks to him, we placed an order and came back to pick them up. *Be sure to call and place an order a day or two in advance to be guaranteed what you want. Also, the peanut butter filling is only available if you place an order! The dough of the paczki's is very airy and soft. The cream fillings are smooth and flavorful, while the fruit fillings are just perfect. I will need to try some of their other pastries and baked goods. We will be back next year for more! read more

I ordered a cake for my daughter for her 21st birthday and I ordered it two weeks weeks early and it was confirmed because it was a special cake and it was paid for. Then they left me a message the morning of ,saying that the cake couldn't be prepared because believe it or not they didn't have the ingredients and I do have text messages to prove all this. there is so much BS in between the time I ordered it and the time I got it but I can't even put it all on here but my dad went to pick it up after they moved the time from the day before said it would be ready till the next day he went to pick it up and it wasn't ready. He had to stand there for 25 minutes waiting for it and I only agreed to it because I couldn't get a refund because I tried but the owner lost the slip. And then we finally got the cake and we went to eat it and it was horrible. Not just one person said it but four people said it. It was really really bad. I been getting cakes for my family since 2015. My husband got my birthday cake with Betty Boop on it this year and I I absolutely loved my cake it was a cupcake cake 24 cupcakes 12 yellow and 12 chocolate and they can pretty much make anything that you want them to make as long as you have a picture of what you want the cake to look like and they have examples also in the store. When I was inside she waited on me and a conversation about her pay seemed to be continuing. She was very upset and wouldn't accept their attempts to give her money. I love Paczki and all there different fillings, more importantly I love the difference in dough between the Pittsburgh bakeries. But if your looking for that more traditional dough and less donut resemblance then Patty Cake Shop is the bakery for your Paczki needs. PCS offers a variety of flavors lemon, apricot, raspberry, custard, peanut butter cream, strawberry cream, buttercream, and chocolate buttercream just to name a few that was available today. Personally the texture and taste of the dough is what I craze. Their fine sugar dusting is better than the glaze most other places use and again it's more traditional like the ones made at The Good Samaritan Church in Ambridge Pa for Fat Tuesdays. read more

When my husband and I bought a house in Overbrook, moving away from Regent Square, I was worried we were losing our close access to tasty bakeries- boy, was I wrong! I really like PCS; what this bakery does is unpretentious, a little on the sweeter side, but totally solid and more than fairly priced. My family and I come here every Friday, on Shabbat, to have morning donuts and pick up our special ordered challah and we don't have plans to stop any time soon! We're slowly working our way through the various sections of the bakery cases, but we've tried donuts, paczki, muffins, and a couple cookies and they've all been really good. The only reason I'm not giving PCS five stars is because I feel like their specialty cake decorating is a little basic and unrefined. The cake itself can be totally delicious but people "eat" with their eyes first and I find myself wishing their specialty decorated cakes looked as good as they taste- in my opinion! This won't stop me from ordering their basic cakes but I would probably look elsewhere for a cake to really wow at a birthday party with a theme, etc. read more

This use to be one of the best bakeries around. Not so much now, they went from being one of the best,to meh. Not sure if there is new owner's,all new staff,but the quality has just plummeted. I placed an order for a important function,ten days in advance,the male that took my order was not working that morning,but my order was not there! The only thing we were asked to bring was the double Danish, they had none,my order wasn't there and the baker's were gone for the day. The girls working that day were sympathetic to our situation,but their hands were tied,so the one thing that we were asked to bring,we couldn't,all because of someone's incompetency. We have a rather large family and order Party Cake quite often,since they have become mediocre, I can find another better bakery. One item I've been buying for year's,a crawler with jimmies, which is now totally different,looks like they are trying to cut corners. They also don't answer their phone and ask not to leave a message,so I called another bakery, they answered their phone,so I placed an order for a 50.00 cake, elsewhere. I ordered my son's Graduation cake 2+ weeks in advance. I paid for it in FULL. The day of graduation they called & said they "ran out of icing". This was 1 hr before I was supposed to pick it up. They had nothing to substitute for it. I got a cookie tray & 2 dozen cupcakes also. Most of the cookies were broken & the cupcakes must've been old because when you removed the paper the cake crumbled. Blown away by how deliciously tantalizing these sweets are! Everything I looked at, I wanted. But who can blame me? Fudge cookies, burnt almond torte, cupcakes, fresh donuts... You name it, I craved it! I ended up choosing an assortment of cookies to bring to a friends party. The most unassuming but standout in my mind was the chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookies. I can't speak to the selection, but I can tell you that these baked goods are delicious! They are best known for their cakes, it seems. My dad always wants this cake for his birthday, and we have never been disappointed! I've also enjoyed the massive pepperoni rolls, swirl cookies, and red velvet cupcakes. I can't speak to the actual store or service because I've never been there, but my office often gets donuts from here and I have to say, they are probably the most delicious donuts I've ever had. I probably should NOT eat them every time they are brought in, but luckily for my taste buds (unfortunately for my diet and health) I do. I always pick the chocolate iced boston creme. I'm not even a hug fan of the boston creme donuts normally, but there's something about this that's just so good!
